UH Board & District 2 Board

Pledge & Officer Messages I pledge to uphold the Objects of Circle K International, to foster compassion and goodwill toward others through service and leadership, to develop my abilities and the abilities of all people, and to dedicate myself to the realization of mankind's potential.

Hello Mighty Members from the University of Houston Circle K! I am Dylann Lowery the 2018-2019 District Governor. I have been so honored to serve in this capacity this year and have hoped to make our district proud. My favorite things of the year has been traveling all around the district meeting the wonderful faces of our chapters. I look forward to seeing you all at District Convention this year and want to encourage you to serve on the district level such as a Committee Chair, Lt. Governor, or District Staff member. If you have any questions, please always reach out! I would love to hear from you. Thank you for such a great year as I have been honored to serve you! Yours in Service, Dylann F. Lowery 2018-2019 District Governor The Spring semester has started and I hope everyone had a great couple of weeks adjusting to your new classes! We have some important events that will be explained more in depth in this issue for The Paw Print. I also have some recaps on this past month and some upcoming events for February. Keep reading to see what our chapter has prepared! 3

MEMBER

SPOTLIGHT Vincent Tangavelou has been a constant presence at CKI events ever since he first joined. He has always offered to provide carpooling, and regularly attends our service events. He has gone above and beyond the call of duty by also providing an unexpected source of fellowship in our club: making CKI -related memes to lift everyone’s spirit. (see page 12) His memes often gain a laugh from members in our GroupMe devoted to CKI spam. Aside from his clear commitment to service, Vincent is just a swell and pleasant guy to be friends with, and for that reason, he is our Outstanding Member of the Month for January 2019.

I was introduced to CKI from my friend Alex one day when I was searching for new clubs outside my major. And honestly... I was hesitant in the beginning and wasn’t sure if I would fit in as an upperclassman that didn’t even know what Key Club was. But despite being a stranger, I was immediately welcomed by everyone in the club and instantly fell in love with the mission of CKI. While many clubs do have volunteering opportunity, I was always excited and impatient for any event we had plan. Compared to my other clubs where event revolved around my science, CKI was different. CKI offered me opportunities to help my community, gave me the chance to make a change, and it was purely through the essence of service. But while I am Member of the Month and am grateful for this recognition; however, it is only due to how much passion and positive energy comes from everyone in this club that it is no wonder so many members are active. Through CKI, I have done so many great service projects along even greater people and made so many memories. And with DCON just around the corner, I am ecstatic for the potential memories that lie ahead.”

WHITE COUGAR CAROL BY JOY CAPELLAN

Our past Editor, Joy, took the time to write a Circle K carol based on our White Cougar event! Thank you Joy for submitting this article!

Sung in Jingle Bells tune

[Verse 1]

Live to serve, Love to serve

[Chorus]

Dashing through the store

That’s what we live by

Live to serve, Love to serve

To buy some potluck food

Oh what fun it is to see

That’s what we live by

O'er the shelves we go Looking for some goods

Oh what fun it is to see My UH family!

We put backpacks aside

My UH family, HEY!

And clear out all the space

[Verse 2]

We sit down in a circle and

A day or two ago

Live to serve, Love to serve

steal someone else’s place!

I was looking for a toy

We’ll win all the rewards

To bring to the white elephant

You best believe that U of H

[Chorus]

that could bring someone joy

Will take home 10 awards!!”

Live to serve, Love to serve

We ate and we shared memes

service everyday

Then we talked about next year

leadership and fellowship

We got a lot of things in store

is what we always say, HEY!

To make DCON-ners cheer:

JANUARY RECAP UH held its Spring’s Cat’s Back the week school reopened! Cat’s Back is a big event where all the university organizations gather together in different booths to recruit members for their club. Students can learn more about each organization and hear about what they do straight from the officers.

UH CKI also participated at serveUH’s MLK day of service and volunteered in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy of service!

For the Martin Luther King Day of Service, which is basically a day designated to give back to the community in honor of Dr. King’s legacy, we were working in the archives section of the Houston Public Library where they store newspapers, censuses, and various other government documents. These physical books were being digitized, so our job was to help box them all up so they can be sent to storage. Although that might not seem like the most exciting task in the world, it was still pretty fulfilling to know that in some way we were able to help out the dedicated people who ran that department. Furthermore, I found that I learned so much about the library and how important and essential they are for the community by providing technological services, educational resources, and by overall, simply acting as a safe refuge for people who might not have anywhere else to go. At the end of the day it wasn't just about completing one service project or getting so-and-so amount of volunteer hours. But it was also about gaining a deeper understanding of greater institutional problems such as poverty, inequality, and lack of access to certain resources. It was about the various ways that libraries work to address and alleviate those problems, truly living up to the vision and legacy of MLK.”

MEETING & SOCIAL recaps Photoshoot Social Discovery Green

During the Saturday before the Spring semester started, our chapter went to Discovery Green for a photoshoot social! Afterwards, we sat down with food and played some card games. We hope everyone who went had a wonderful time!

1st General Meeting Our 1st Spring general meeting was held at the end of January. We welcomed all our new members and spoke about upcoming events including elections and DCON! Afterwards, we made bookmarks, to be combined with craft kits, that would be donated to Texas Children’s Hospital as part of an initiative to bring arts and an appreciation for reading to young children.
