editor’s note. I’m Natalie and I am the creator & editor of Grae Magazine. Grae Magazine was created to uncover underground artists who have a passion for creating. If you’re new to Grae, make sure to check out our talented artists and their take on this world. Read each word with an open mind, lose yourself in our treehouse and indulge yourself in our Rorschach Art Gallery. If you aren’t new to Grae, welcome back. 365. Three hundred and sixty five photos. A photo a day for an entire year. One of our favorite things about photography here at Grae is project 365. We wanted to take you through a few artists’ day in the life by going through their three hundred and sixty five photos. We wanted to see what challenges they come across and how it helped them grow as a person and as a photographer.

THREE SIXTY FIVE. 365 DAYS A YEAR. 365 PHOTOS. TAKING A PHOTO A DAY SOUNDS EASY BUT WHEN IT COMES TO FINDING THE TIME IN THE DAY, GETTING OUT TO PHOTOGRAPH BEFORE THE SUN GOES DOWN AND HAVING WHAT’S GOING ON IN FRONT OF YOU ACTUALLY MATCH UP WITH WHAT’S GOING ON INSIDE YOUR HEAD, IS NOT AS EASY AS IT SOUNDS. IN THIS ISSUE, WE COME TO SEE WHAT CHALLENGES AN ARTIST COMES ACROSS AND HOW THEY GROW AS A PHOTOGRAPHER AND A PERSON. A PHOTOGRAPHER’S 365 CAN TELL A LOT ABOUT THEM AND THEIR EVERYDAY LIFE. IT’S INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT THEY CHOOSE TO PHOTOGRAPH AND HOW THEY TAKE AN IDEA AND BRING IT TO LIFE. WE COME TO SEE THAT A LOT OF TIMES A PERSON FINDS THEMSELVES SIMPLY BY PHOTOGRAPHING THE WORLD AROUND THEM. 6 | Grae Magazine | Three Sixty Five

It wasn’t fear that got me up this morning, it was hope. The kind that feels like there is a thumb pushing deep into your spine leaving a sensation that radiates through your entire body. The kind of hope that wouldn’t let you turn around and walk back even if you tried. I could hear the purring sighs that came from his mouth has he breathed deep. In and out. In and out. At any moment that soft purr could abruptly awaken and my entire day will turn meaningless. There truly was no turning back and all I could do at this point was move forward or stay lying here miserable for the rest of my life. It was my choice my heart and mind kept telling me, but my feet wouldn’t move. The sun wasn’t even up yet and all I could think about was the taste of freedom. He looked so peaceful from where I was standing. There is nothing more innocent than one who is fast asleep, one who is helpless and vulnerable. Trusting their soul to come back when they awaken, nothing is more opposite than the human we claim to be. It made me want to stay, only in hopes that I will wake up from this nightmare and come to see that it was all a dream. I looked down at my arms and only the scars and the bruises could remind me of why I was leaving. I was holding my breath as if the air was toxic and took quiet but quick steps as if the ground was breaking. But the ground was breaking. Every day that I stayed, my world was breaking; into pieces I couldn’t put back together. It was out of love he would say, but I knew that love
couldn’t cause me this pain. It wasn’t the bleeding or the multiple times I woke up in the hospital that made me realize I must go. I set the palm of my hand gently on my stomach and felt her kick, she was always awake when there was fear inside of me. As if she could feel it, as if she was letting me know I wasn’t alone. It was the idea of her growing up in this home that made me realize I must go. I can’t let this baby suffer like I have suffered for so many years. He had no idea and that was the hope that was pushing so deeply on my spine. I grabbed the suitcase from under the bed that has been lying there patiently for the three weeks now and headed straight for the door that opened up to my freedom. I successfully made it downstairs, it was just the three locks that i had to quietly unlock and then I’d be finally free. I managed to open two with out a sound and as I was reaching for the third, the sun was just peeking over the hills and creeping through the windows. I felt that sensation in my spine that was now radiating through my entire body. It wasn’t hope this time. I couldn’t move, I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t believe. He let go of the knife he struck straight into my back and I turned around to see him mouthing the words ‘I win’. I could barley keep my soul in place and felt it leaving my body as I collapsed to the floor. ‘Actually, you lost.’ He had no idea what I was talking about but he didn’t deserve to know. ‘Spine’ By Natalie Zigdon Three Sixty Five | Grae Magazine |25

Photographer Karrah Kobus is filled with depth and creativity that she brings to life through her photography. She didn’t go to school for photography or get taught by a professional, she picked up a camera and started shooting her way through brilliant images. She taught herself everything she knows and you would be amazed by the inspiring ideas she comes up with. What we love most is that she truly colors outside the lines. She isn’t afraid to break free from society’s guidelines and makes her art speak loud and clear. She’s different and we love it. Make sure to check out every single one of her photos at http://karrahkobus.zenfolio.com. I promise, you’ll be inspired.
Somewhere out there someone else knows the same techniques as me, I’m sure. Even though I’m self taught I don’t feel like anything I do is that revolutionary, so there is no need to keep it to myself. even if something I was doing was that unique, Id probably want to talk about it even more! haha. The only things i don’t answer are those in which I just don’t really know what to say without actually showing someone how... which is why I started doing the skype editing sessions! For those i figured I needed to charge simply because that will be a much larger chunk of time coming out of my schedule.
Why did it become a ‘Not so 365 project’ rather than your average 365? It started out as a 365 and then a lot of things happened and now it’s just a collection of self portraits. How did your interest in photography come about? I started taking photos because i found Rosie Hardys work and as an artist, realized that a camera was the perfect medium for me. i practiced and practiced, and have literally not stopped thinking about it for the past year and a half. though i really don’t think I’m all that good (yet, lol). I did not go to school for it! i was going for anthropology before I left. :) Funny you say that. Rosie is featured in this same issue! We’re a huge fan too. I’m sure you get a lot of people asking for advice due to your fan base on flikr. Do you hand it freely or sparingly? I answer basically everything people ask me. i dont feel like i really have any secrets.

What if you were told exactly when you were going to die. Would you use it to your advantage and conquer your fears because you knew nothing else can kill you? Would you make every single dream a reality because nothing should be stopping you now? Would you actually

appreciate life and ‘seize the moment’ because you knew how much time you have left? Or would you constantly feel the complete opposite because every single day you’re a day closer to the day you die. I guess you’ll never know. -grae

rorschach. dont see with your eyes, percieve with your mind. They reflect your own desires and fantasies right back at you. They are a stolen world in which you create the streets, the faces and the sky. These pictures will be whatever you want them to be. To me, art is exactly like a rorschach. There is simplicity in what you are looking at but it is your mind that creates a beyond ordinary place. Every month this section will be filled with brilliant artists who strive to have their art lose you into an entirely different world. When appreciating art, let your mind wander. Let your mind be free.
