Millions of people visit the State of Hawaiʻi annually, and arrivals are expected to grow as the COVID-19 pandemic recedes into the background. Hospitality and Tourism is Hawaiʻi’s biggest industry employing 21% of the state’s workforce and generating more than $16 billion in annual revenue. It long ago replaced agriculture as the state’s economic driver. And it affects every aspect of economic, social, and political life in Hawai‘i.

Hospitality UH Maui College is part of the reimagining of hospitality and tourism.

Meet Akasha Kauhola who is currently pursuing her AAS in the UH Maui College Hospitality and Tourism (HOST) program. The program has provided her with hands-on opportunities including an internship at a resort in West Maui. The faculty provided her with the background knowledge that helped her integrate industry standards into her job. “When I am at the front desk or speaking with members of other departments, I’m familiar with industry language and my organizational skills have been strengthened by HOST class competencies and expectations,” says Kauhola. Meet Chris Rabang, the General Manager at the Westin Nanea Ocean Villas and Co-Chair for the Hospitality & Tourism Advisory Committee at UH Maui College. practical experience to students before they formally enter our Hospitality Industry workforce. We are very fortunate to have HOST students apply for internships at our resort. Students continue to pursue careers with us and, thanks to HOST classes, they arrive professionally prepared with an understanding of the ethics and standards of the Hospitality Industry.
