AQUAponics

Sustainable science in a living lab

Remy Romo-Valdez became interested in both agriculture and engineering at Maui High School. The UH Maui College Sustainable Science Management Program seemed a perfect fit. And it was. He’s scheduled to graduate this May with his BAS in Sustainable Science Management with a concentration in Marine studies.

Before enrolling, he wasn’t sure he would be able to balance classwork, assignments, and his personal time. Turns out, he could. “I found that I could manage my time more effectively as my professors were very flexible with their time with students and assignments.” And he found connections with both instructors and peers actually helped him concentrate on work related to his field of study. “I realized I could also meet others with similar interests, so there was ample social time between studying and hanging out with new friends.”

Romo-Valdez learned more than his courses’ subject matter. “The classes I attended helped me develop an open mindset and furthered my skills of critical thinking and organization. Additionally, the professors who taught these classes connected me with organizations and businesses focused in the field of Sustainability.”

SSM Program Coordinator Dr. Meagan Jones explains that many alumni transition to work in education, natural resource management, tourism, agriculture, become entrepreneurs, and pursue graduate studies. Students also

gain industry experience through their SSM internships as well as the applied experience gained through the year-long SSM capstone project.

“Remy is a natural leader among his peers and goes the extra mile in his studies and helping others,” says Dr. Jones. “While he naturally gravitates toward the natural sciences, he also excels in systems modeling and applying sustainability tools to solve complex problems.”

Remy gained practical skill sets by taking liberal arts classes. And they led to other areas of interest, one of which was working as a lab tech with WaiPono Farms on the UHMC campus.

As a working greenhouse that grows fresh produce and raises tilapia to support food security through donations to various community organizations, WaiPono Farms provides a work-based learning experience for UHMC students to gain hands-on skills in the agriculture sector. It also prepares students for future job opportunities through immersion in a highly productive facility and a collaborative, team environment.

“As an outstanding student leader at the WaiPono Farm aquaponics greenhouse for the last four years, Remy has worked continuously while he pursues his SSM degree,” says Program Manager Nicolette van der Lee. “He has contributed in immeasurable ways to the project through his dedicated

work ethic, commitment to excellence, and continuous pursuit of learning.”

Through their work at WaiPono Farms, students can easily advance into STEM pathways of agriculture, culinary, conservation and other related sectors. The industry expects college students and graduates to bring favorable traits of professionalism including being on time and prepared to work, as well as skills and applied knowledge. UHMC continues to engage with industry partners by gathering current labor market data and employer input on what skills and work-based experiences are valuable for the future of the workforce in both areas of academic credit and continuing education classes.

CE What is Bugging you? Home Garden Pest Control Overview

This course is geared to the home gardener, just starting out, with questions regarding insect pest identification. This course will cover tools/resources for quick identification of the primary insect pests that affect the various crops or ornamental plants commonly grown here in Hawai‘i. Learn to identify beneficial insects and their roles in mitigating insect pest problems. Course will include lecture, demonstrations, and walk-about to learn about the common pests in the landscape. From ABIT Grad to Mayor’s Small Business Award Winner

The entire UHMC community was thrilled and very proud when 2015 ABIT grad Michelle Heller’s Da Kine Paints retail store was recognized as a 2022 Maui County Exceptional Small Business.

She says her UHMC experience was vital to becoming the first and only Benjamin Moore Paints dealer on Maui. “If I tried to approach Benjamin Moore about opening a store without knowledge gained through UHMC, I don’t think I would have had the confidence, let alone the ability to make it happen. If I hadn’t gone to college to sharpen my skills in operating a business, it would never have led to the path of opening our store.”

When Michelle enrolled, she knew that attending her local college rather than a larger university would be a different experience. And she was pleasantly surprised by the culture at UHMC. “I expected to sit in a large classroom with a professor lecturing for an hour, not getting to know any fellow classmates coupled with a lot of homework. What I found was that I was in classrooms with 10-25 students, the instructors were personable and encouraged engagement among students. I developed real friendships with

I felt as though I could talk about anything I was going through with them with confidentiality. The professionals that UH hires are people within our fairly small Maui community with real world experience in the fields they are teaching.”

Although Michelle did help her father in his paint contracting business, she didn’t have the formal business training necessary to becoming a business owner. “In the UHMC Applied Business and Information Technology Bachelor’s degree program, I learned the most efficient way to start, run, and operate a business.”

“For my capstone project, the instructors helped guide me towards the opportunity to open a paint retail store. During school I started the conversation with Benjamin Moore to open an independent store, and just six months after graduating, I opened Da Kine Paints retail paint store in Kahului.” And just seven years after that, she won a Mayor’s Small Business Award. Way to go, Michelle!

If the accomplished young man on our cover looks familiar to you, it may be because you’re familiar with his beautiful music. Kamalei Kawa‘a and his group rose to prominence in 2019 and 2020 with Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards and a Grammy nomination. From the time he graduated from Baldwin High School in 2014 until those musical milestones, Kamalei had worked in the construction industry. He loved it. But after five years, “I realized it was taking away from my passion – hula and music.” That passion, by the way, is in Kamalei’s DNA. His mother is noted kumu hula and Hawaiian cultural practitioner Luana Kawa‘a. “I felt the Hawaiian cultural practices I grew up with were slowly slipping away,” he adds.

So, beginning in 2018, he dedicated himself to music full time while also teaching hula part time at Seabury Hall. Then came COVID. “The pandemic took music and my income away,” says Kamalei. “Lucky for me, Seabury brought me on full time to teach Hawaiian Ensemble hula and ‘ukulele as part of the school’s Hawaiian Studies program.”

College had never been on his radar. Until then. “When I got this full-time job, I wanted to elevate the knowledge I already had and to gain more knowledge,” Kamalei says. He knew he wanted to be an educator – to teach young people Hawaiian studies, culture, oli, music, hula. “I feel you should have a certificate or a degree if you want to teach. I wanted to take the classes that would make me a Hawaiian educator. I wanted to learn as much as I could.”

He wasted no time. Kamalei enrolled at UHMC in 2019. And in May, he will graduate with his Associate’s Degree in Hawaiian Studies. Besides his extremely supportive parents and wife, Kamalei credits a scholarship, our college’s resources, and flexible class schedules for his success. Mostly, though, it’s his determination and hard, tireless work.

And it’s the story of a young man whose entire educational life was adversely affected by an elementary school teacher who told him he was “stupid” and destined to fail.

“I would just like to encourage our Native Hawaiians to learn about our culture and be proud of it,” says Kamalei. “It’s never too late to start. Don’t be ashamed you didn’t start at a young age. We need you folks to do it.”
