FREE Healthcare Trainings Today, Princess is well on her way – she’s a pre-med student at UH Mānoa working on her BS in Biochemistry. Being able to stay on Maui as she works and continues her education is important to Princess. In fact, as president of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America)Future Health Professionals and a project specialist on Maui with the Hawaiʻi/Pacific Basin Area Health Education Center out of the University of Hawaiʻi JABSOM (John A. Burns School of Medicine), she facilitates access and support for students across Maui County and the state. She notes how her own education “cultivated a passion in me to guide and mentor other students pursuing careers in the healthcare industry.” As one of her most recent projects, Princess organized a COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Maui College specifically for local high school students and partnered with the UHMC nursing program faculty and students to administer immunizations. Meet Luz Digney, the Maui Memorial Medical Center’s Hospital Operations Supervisor. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from Maui College’s Associate of Science in Nursing program more than two decades ago! Luz credits experienced instructors and access to clinical labs as pivotal preparation for her career as an ER nurse and now as a supervisor. “Any student who successfully completes Allied Health programs at UH Maui College can achieve success. I continually encourage potential students to consider entering the healthcare industry. Caring for our community is a very fulfilling career,” she says. Millions of people visit the State
of Hawaiʻi annually, and arrivals are expected to grow as the COVID-19 pandemic recedes into the background. Hospitality and Tourism is Hawaiʻi’s biggest industry employing 21% of the state’s workforce and generating more than $16 billion in annual revenue. It long ago replaced agriculture as the state’s economic driver. And it affects every aspect of economic, social, and political life in Hawai‘i.
Hospitality UH Maui College is part of the reimagining of hospitality and tourism.
Meet Akasha Kauhola who is currently pursuing her AAS in the UH Maui College Hospitality and Tourism (HOST) program. The program has provided her with hands-on opportunities including an internship at a resort in West Maui. The faculty provided her with the background knowledge that helped her integrate industry standards into her job. “When I am at the front desk or speaking with members of other departments, I’m familiar with industry

language and my organizational skills have been strengthened by HOST class competencies and expectations,” says Kauhola. Although transportation is recognized as
one of the primary sources of revenue in Hawaiʻi’s visitor sector, it also accounts for about a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions and is a large contributor to our reliance on imported fuel. According to Governor David Ige, “Coupled with our sustainable energy goals, hybrid-electric vehicles support a real transition away from dependence on fossil fuels to a cleaner, more renewable energy.” To that end, the Governor has signed into law several bills to adopt clean transportation goals including adopting preferences to rent electric or hybrid vehicles for state employees and transitioning 100% of state agencies’ light-duty vehicles to zeroemission ones by the end of 2035.
Automotive UH Maui College is keeping pace with the essential shift to electric and hybrid vehicles.
Meet Professor Lawrence Martinson who graduated from the UH Maui College AMT program in 2010 and is now an Assistant Professor in the program. As a result of State government action, Martinson anticipates a decisive shift in Hawaiʻi’s automotive industry workforce needs. He leads UHMC students to prepare, diagnose, service, and repair hybrid and electric vehicles (HEVs). His “Introduction to HEV” class that will be offered Spring/Summer 2023 explores the use of hybrid and electric power for vehicle transportation. The certification course explains the cause of different 18
types of internal combustion engine emissions and why hybrid and electric vehicle technology is critically important at this time. “The program also covers safety when using high voltage, maintenance, drivability, inverter power transfer, battery technologies, hydrogen-electric power, and fuel cell technology. And it details the physics of battery storage, hybrid generation systems, and electric vehicle application. All this is designed to prepare our students for successful careers in the contemporary automotive field,” says Martinson.
