go beyond the classroom Have you ever used Google Earth or Google Maps? Then you have used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies. “GIS offers a visual way to use maps to analyze and understand data to reveal relationships, patterns, and trends,” said GIS instructor Sarah McLane Bryan. For the first time, UHMC will offer a GIS Summer Institute featuring a range of classes using handson learning for beginners curious to learn more about GIS, as well as experienced GIS users ready to advance their skills. “Taking classes in GIS has enabled me to apply the skills I learned in the classroom to my current job, and inspired my senior capstone project,” said Dwight Baldwin, a student in the Sustainable Science Management bachelor degree program. GIS skills are also widely used in natural resources and other STEM career paths. The GIS Summer Institute welcomes high school and college students to earn a non-credit certificate, as well as community members interested in professional development. “GIS training at UHMC helped me to support Maui Nui communities in spatial planning, mauka to makai,” said Roxie Sylva, the Maui Marine Program Coordinator for The Nature Conservancy. Complete three courses to earn a Certificate from the GIS Summer Institute. For more information, contact Nicolette van der Lee, nhv@hawaii.edu, 808-984-3300.
