Honoring

To honor all who have taught me this art and in the same spirit and dedication to impart a knowledge of medicine to others. I will continue with diligence to keep abreast of advances in medicine, and respect those who broaden our knowledge by research. I will treat without exception all who seek my ministrations and discriminate against no one, so long as the treatment of others is not compromised thereby, and I will seek the counsel of particularly skilled physicians where indicated for the benefit of my patient.

I will remember that caring for the patient will be my primary concern and while doing so I will honor the autonomy of the sick. I will recognize that such caring requires my being available, giving my time generously, communicating honestly, and comforting as well as treating. Such care also involves offering my support to my patients’ loved ones.

My fiduciary role will require protecting patients from all forms of malpractice, malfeasance, and unnecessary expenses, and I will try to prevent, as well as cure, disease.

While I continue to keep this Oath inviolate, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art and science of medicine; respected by my peers and society. May my faith strengthen my resolve to attain the above.

Keynote Speaker:

Neal Palafox, MD, MPH

Neal A. Palafox, M.D., M.P.H. is currently Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), and Professor of Cancer Prevention and Control in the Pacific at the University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center.

i, he is the grandson of Emeterio Palafox who was recruited from the Philippines to work on the Honokaʻa sugar plantation in 1925, and the son of Anastacio Palafox who immigrated in 1931 . Dr. Palafox is a graduate of the 3 rd ʻImi Hoʻōla class in 1976, completed JABSOM in 1980, followed by a Family Medicine residency at UCLA Hospital and Clinics. With the US Public Health Service (’83-’92) , he served in the Marshall Islands as a hospital physician , the medical director of public health, and director of a healthcare program for Marshallese affected by the US nuclear weapons testing program.

Receiving an MPH at Johns Hopkins University in 1993, he returned to Hawaiʻi to assist with developing JABSOM’s Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (DFMCH) , serving as the Chair for 13 years. He has worked on reducing health disparities in Hawaiʻi and the US Affiliated

Pacific Islands (USAPI) for the last 30 years through utilizing seven different grant mechanisms from the US National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Private Foundations. He now oversees nine million dollars of research and programmatic grant funding annually.

He has academic expertise in ciguatera treatment, vitamin A deficiency, cancer heath care disparities in the US Affiliated Pacific, health effects of nuclear testing, and implementing new cervical cancer screening technologies in low-resource countries. He was a founder of the DFMCH, the CDC-funded Pacific Regional Central Cancer Registry, the Cancer Council of the Pacific Islands, a Pacific Regional Cancer Prevention and Control Network, and the lead editor of a handbook developed as a medical student on Cross-Cultural Caring in Hawaiʻi (’80).

He has been an invited speaker on cancer and nuclear health concerns to the US President’s Cancer Panel, CDC, the Union for International Cancer Control, the International Comprehensive Cancer Control Partnership, and the US Institute of Medicine. He was honored to be inducted as a Marshallese Citizen by their Government in 2011, and sailed home on the closing leg to the Malama Honua voyage from Tahiti to Hawaiʻi with the Hokulea and Hikianalia in 2017.

His greatest assets and blessing—are his seven children and his wife, Dr. Momi Kaʻanoi.

Windsor and Mary Cutting Excellence in The Basic Medical Sciences Award: Dr. Windsor Cutting was an internationally renowned academician, a basic medicine scientist, and a clinician. He held many positions in academia during his distinguished career, including Dean of the Stanford School of Medicine and Founding Dean of the John A. Burns School of Medicine. Mary Cutting founded and served as President of the Friends of the Medical School. This award honors a member of the graduating class for scholarly excellence in the basic biomedical sciences.

A land acknowledgment is a step towards the conscious recognition of the place we are in and its indigenous roots. Land acknowledgments are often shared at the beginning of conferences, events, and meetings, and can be included in program descriptions, course syllabi, and email signatures.

I (We) offer this Land Acknowledgement, acknowledging Hawaiʻi as an indigenous place whose original people are today identified as Kanaka ʻŌiwi - Native Hawaiians. The ʻāina of Puahia in Mānoa Valley on which we gather is located in the ahupuaʻa of Mānoa, in the moku of Kona, on the mokupuni of Oʻahu, in the paeʻāina of Hawaiʻi. I (We) recognize that her majesty Queen Liliʻuokalani yielded the Hawaiian Kingdom and these territories under duress and protest to the United States to avoid the bloodshed of her people. I (We) further recognize that generations of indigenous Hawaiians and their knowledge systems shaped Hawaiʻi in a sustainable way that allows me and us to enjoy her gifts today. For this, I am grateful. We are grateful. The John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa recognizes our kuleana to care for this ‘āina for the many generations yet to come.

JABSOM’S MISSION & DISTINCTIVE FEATURES

The School’s basic mission is to teach and train high-quality physicians, biomedical scientists, and allied health workers for Hawaiʻi and the Pacific. Its major purpose is to provide an opportunity for a medical education previously unavailable to residents of Hawaiʻi and other Pacific nations. Our vision is ALOHA: to Attain Lasting Optimal Health for All.

Some unique features of the School’s M.D. program include its ProblemBased Learning curriculum (PBL; see Medical Education), and community-based medicine program. In addition, clinical instruction is accomplished in affiliated community hospitals and clinics. The benefits of this approach are several: it is more economical; students from the start are thrust into the real world of day-to-day clinical activity; and working directly within the community involves extensive participation of community physicians and other health professionals in the training of future physicians.

Our mid-Pacific location, ties the Pacific island nations and Southeast Asia, and the State’s multi-ethnic, multi-cultural population all combine to give the School its distinctive flavor and opportunities. JABSOM is among the most culturally and ethnically diverse medical schools in the country, and its student body mirrors the rich diversity of the State’s population. The School has always and will continue to play a historical role in expanding opportunities for women, minorities, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders, and the socio-economically disadvantaged. Programs such as ʻImi Hoʻōla (“Those who seek to heal”, see Programs-ʻImi Hoʻōla) and the Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence have dramatically increased the number of under-represented minorities and disadvantaged physicians in the community.

Advanced medical and biomedical research at JABSOM has received international recognition for pioneering work in human fertility, human heredity, comparative genetics, evolution theory, infectious disease, pharmacology, and cross cultural psychiatry, among other fields. Its work on the better understanding of Hansen’s Disease is part of Hawaiʻi’s legacy to the world. The School’s primary investigative focus over the decades has been in those areas for which it is ideally qualified by its diverse population: to improve the health of ethnic groups, many of whom are otherwise underrepresented in health research, and to conduct research with those groups in a culturally relevant manner.
