University of Illinois @Chicago MHA Newsletter 2019 A LOOK BACK / A LOOK AHEAD
#ACCOMPLISHMENTS MHA student and 2018 graduate Elizabeth Brann received the UIC MHA Community Service Award, Elizabeth completed the MHA program as a part-time student and served as the VP of Part-Time Students for the student-led organization, UIC Association of Future Healthcare Administrators. As VP, she met with, guided and supported incoming students in planning coursework. She worked full time as a Vascular Sonographer at the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System, where she taught ultrasound students and helped patients manage acute and chronic peripheral vascular diseases alongside the Vascular Surgery team. “I believe I received this award because I am passionate about giving back to the UIC/UI Health community,” Liz said. “I work hard every day to give back to the patients that we serve, and the MHA program increased my awareness for all of the great things that our organization does. I believe we can truly make an impact on a community by addressing the social determinants of health through innovative initiatives such as this.” Since graduating, Liz has been in South America, where she hopes to find a job that will allow her to improve her Spanish and have an impact. She did a short volunteer restoration project of the Lost City (Ciudad Perdida) in Colombia in October, and now she is backpacking/traveling in Peru with plans to hike Machu Picchu and Patagonia
in the next few months.
MHA students place second at the oldest case competition in the country, the NAHSE Annual Everett V. Fox Student Case Competition. Thirty-one schools competed this year and the UIC MHA team made it to the finals with Ohio State University, University of Michigan, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Iowa. We were named runner-up to Ohio State University and placed ahead of the rest of our esteemed colleagues. Students Ketki Parmar, Srilalitha (Lalli) Akurati, Oseghale Ituah, and Lauren Marei analyzed the issues facing the health care organization featured in the case and recommended ideas for how a health care system could deliver care to chronically ill older patients more efficiently and effectively.

Assistant Professor Nick
Tilipman co-authored a report titled Options To Improve Affordability In California’s Individual Health Insurance. The report’s policy options presented to Governor Gavin Newsom and members of the California State Legislature are based on a model developed by Tilipman and his co-author economist Wes Yin, associate professor of public policy at UCLA Luskin. Their findings show the potential effects that various policy proposals would have on health care enrollment, consumer health spending and public spending.
