Association of Future Healthcare Administrators

A Message from the president Greetings! My name is Danielle Moore, and I am the President of the Association for Future Healthcare Administrators (AFHA) for the 2019-2020 school year. On behalf of the AFHA, I would like to welcome the new students to our MHA program, and welcome back our returning students. We are all here to lean on and push one another towards our goals; both personal and professional. The mission of AFHA is to create an environment that empowers future healthcare leaders by fostering relationships within the educational and healthcare communities that promote

opportunities for professional development, networking capabilities, public service, and the continued growth and enhancement of the MHA program at UIC. The Executive Board has worked hard all summer planning a number of events for the fall semester, and we cannot wait to show you what we have in store. Getting involved is the best way to build your lifelong network of fellow administrators, and we would like to thank you in advance for your involvement. Best of luck this semester, and please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us on the e-board if you need anything at all!

We Are Excited to Start a New Year Together! Keep Reading for the Inside Scoop!

5 Tips for Success By Tim McPhillips 1. UIC’s School of Public Health offers a wide array of resources, USE THEM! The Peer support Team is just one of the many resources available to us. Team members are advanced MPH students who are dedicated to helping their fellow students succeed academically. Not sure how to connect? Let us know and we will be sure to connect you. 2. Time management is important. The two-year MHA program can fly by. Plan ahead and be proactive when it comes to group projects to make the most of your experience. Work with your team members to find time - the closer you are to the end of a semester, the more difficult it becomes to find time to convene. Block out time early and often. 3. Get involved by joining one (or more!) of the student body organizations or case competitions.

These are excellent opportunities to sharpen your leadership and public speaking skills. For more details see Professor Frank Borgers (fborgers@uic.edu) or Lalli Akurati (sakura2@uic.edu) 4. Network. Network. Network. One of, if not THE most important thing to do is network. Depending on your track, you will be entering the job market between 2 -4 years from now. We strongly encourage you to build your professional network throughout the MHA program. Did I say network? 5. Have Fun. The MHA program isn’t just about academics. Well, mostly it is. But everyone needs time to relax and unwind sometime, right? Lucky for you AFHA coordinates community and social events throughout the year to help everyone unwind. Keep your eyes peeled for a list of events. Hope to see you at one of our outings!

Best Places for Activities and Food By Ose Ituah ACTIVITIES:

FOOD TO TRY ON TAYLOR STREET & CAMPUS:

Escape Room (Downtown Chicago) - Is a really fun group activity that is right off the red line downtown Chicago located next to Trader Joes. A few members of our cohort got together and had a really fun time. The escape room takes about an hour and a half in total and costs around $35 dollars to participate.

Chilango Mexican Food - A very popular nontraditional Mexican food spot with very tasty food. The empanadas and nachos are some of my favorites.

AceBounce (Ping Pong Bar) - is a really fun bar located downtown Chicago inside the loop that has ping pong tables and is a great spot to grab drinks and have fun with a group. I highly recommend it as well. Rock Climbing, Sauna, and Pool at East Campus Gym are really good ways to unwind and relax during downtime.

Al’s Italian Beef - A really good Italian Beef spot with some of the best Italian Beef in the city. Its cash only but the food is amazing! Volcano Sushi - Order the all you can eat sushi buffet lunch option for $16 until 3:00 pm. After 3 pm the price increases to $20 dollars for dinner Siri Indian Food Restaurant - Siri has a very good lunch buffet (all you can eat) for just $15. I recommend the Special Chicken Biryani (Boneless), super delicious. Joy Yee - Located on East Campus but has really good Boba Tea and Chinese food. Starbucks - Located just a few blocks away from school is the best place for studying.

Get Involved By Lalli Akurati 1. Become a First Year Representative. Two first year students will be elected to join the AFHA Board in their activities. 2. Join Student Organizations. There are many student organizations such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) or the Public Health Association among many more! 3. Case Competitions. While they are very competitive, they look great on your resume!

4. Attend Panels and Workshops. Notifications are usually relayed via email or posters around the building. 5. The world is your oyster! You can do as little or as much as you would like! I strongly encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities here at UIC to immerse yourself in your MHA journey!

FUN FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW! By SHIVANI SHAH Did you know that as an SPH student, you can request after-hours building access in case you want to use the computer lab, the lounge or study tables on the 1st floor of SPH, study in the MHA lounge, do group work, etc. after 5 pm or on weekends? Just ask the main desk to give you access! SPH has a Farmer’s Fridge vending machine on the first floor along with multiple other vending machines and a coffee machine by the 1st floor restrooms for your everyday snack and drink needs. The newly renovated Health Sciences Library is located just a few blocks away from SPH, across from the Pink Line Station on Polk with a small café located inside of it. Student Center West is home to a large cafeteria with many different cuisines. They also have a Subway, Starbucks, lounges, the UIC bookstore and many more. It is located right next to the West Campus Recreation Center.

RESOURCES FOR PART TIME STUDENTS BY LUKE BRCIC Part-time MHA students are able to be on either a 3-year track or a 4-year track. The determination of which track a student will take will be determined by their ability to complete the course load. As with full-time students, part-time students are required to have a preceptorship experience and complete a capstone project. Unlike full-time students, UIC’s MHA program does not match part-time students with potential preceptors. Instead, it is assumed the part-time student is currently working in a healthcare environment. The student will be responsible for determining their own preceptorship experience usually in their place of employment in a department other than their own. Once a preceptorship experience is determined by the student and potential preceptor, both the professor responsible for the preceptorship class and capstone class must approve this decision. Once approved, you may begin your preceptorship. Part-time students do not have a required of the amount of time spent at the precepting organization since it assumed they work there, however, it is required that the student be present as frequently as deemed necessary to work on the capstone and other projects. Part-time students are required to complete 60 credit hours as full-time students. However, since there is not a required amount of time that the student will be at their preceptorship organization, the preceptorship classes are worth less credits than they are for full-time students. Therefore, part-time students are required to make up the remaining credit hours through elective courses. It is important to meet with your advisor frequently to ensure you are on track with your advising document. Although it is difficult to be active as a part-time student, I encourage you all to attend as many events as possible. Not only will it help you get to know your fellow classmates, but also help you network outside to professionals and alumni. As a part-time student, I advise you to consider joining AFHA. It is helpful to have a part-time student in AFHA to represent their fellow part-timers. As a part-time student, if you do not live near campus and need a quiet place to study, the MHA Lounge on the 7th floor is a hidden gem. There you will have access to a quiet study room or a group study room with your fellow classmates.
