UIC MHA NEWSLETTER An official publication of the University of Illinois Chicago Master of Healthcare Administration program
Mid-Year Report UIC MHA Program The 2023-24 academic year has started strong. We welcomed a new cohort of MHA students and kicked off the year with a student mentoring matching event hosted by the Association of Future Healthcare Administrators (AFHA) in September. In October, our team of MHA students finished in the top ten at the National Association of Health Services Executives Case Competition in Atlanta. There were many UIC MHA alumni in attendance to support our student team. Many thanks to our faulty advisors, Larry Wrobel and Katie Carow. In November, five MHA students led the event planning for our annual ACHE CHEF Networking Event hosted at UIC. The event was a huge success with over one hundred attendees! Many UIC Alumni and Advisory Board members attended the event as representatives from Chicago-area healthcare associations, consulting, insurance, and technology companies. The five MHA student organizers will be honored at the CHEF Annual Meeting in February with the Health Studies Student/Administrative Fellow Leadership award. This January, we supported our Executive MHA students' attendance at the CHEF Career Power Event. Also, AFHA hosted our annual Preceptorship Fair to kick off the preceptorship matching process. In addition, we are planning a few MHA “field trips” and hosting a UIC MHA Alumni and Friends event during ACHE Congress week in March. You all should have received a Save the Date and be on the lookout for an official invitation in the coming weeks. I look forward to finishing the year strong and am very grateful for everyone’s support and partnership. Adam Andersen, DPT, MBA UIC MHA Program Director

COMMUNITY PARTNERS Preceptor Spotlight We are delighted to feature Rachel Paus as this issue's community partner. In addition to Rachel's role as the Senior Director of Marketing & Strategic Communications at UI Health, she has been a Preceptor to our residential students for the past five years and will be graduating with our Executive MHA cohort this Spring. Rachel has more than 15 years’ experience supporting UI Health’s mission-driven academic health enterprise, and she is passionate about creating results-oriented marketing strategies that are creative and cost-effective with a focus on collaboration with executive stakeholders to achieve the greatest outcomes. In her current role, Rachel leads the development of UI Health’s external and internal brand, marketing, digital solutions, and communications strategies. As a preceptor, Rachel "truly love(s) seeing my preceptees get an opportunity to see how their course work in the MHA program relates to the work the UI Health Marketing & Strategic Communications team does." As she reflects on her upcoming graduation from the Executive MHA program, Rachel has developed "even further appreciation for the work my preceptees have done over the years while juggling their time with our department." Additionally, she has been able to apply her learnings in real-time from the EMHA program to help further guide them.
I truly love seeing my preceptees get an opportunity to see how their course work in the MHA program relates to the work the UI Health Marketing & Strategic Communications team does.
We are so grateful to have such a bright star in all aspects of our program. Thank you, Rachel, for all you do!
