PRECEPTORSHIP Each student in the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) preceptor program is placed in a healthcare organization based upon their career interests, professional goals and preceptor sites. Potential placement sites will reflect the range of the diverse environments in the healthcare sector and will include inpatient healthcare, medical group management, post-acute care, community-based health services, and public policy formulation. The UIC MHA preceptorship program begins in the spring semester of a student's first year with professional development seminars. These seminars follow a sequence of topics that prepare students to The CAPSTONE function as effective administrative interns. Topics include: resume development, effective interviewing The PRECEPTORSHIP techniques, introduction to medical terminology and networking skills.
The CURRICULUM
In tandem with the professional seminars, students begin the UIC MHA preceptorship placement process, which includes interviews with Preceptors and on-boarding at the health care organization. Students first meet with the UIC MHA program preceptorship director to determine preferences and opportunities within available sites. After this pairing, students will submit their resumes to targeted organizations, participate in competitive interviews, and accept a site dependent upon mutual selection of preceptor and student. Students submit resumes in February, have interviews in March and are placed by April. Preceptorship site participation occurs in May of the summer semester and continues for 12 months through the end of April of the following spring semester.
The UIC MHA Preceptorship Program’s intent is to provide the student with the opportunity to apply the didactic knowledge gained in the classroom within the context of a health care delivery organization under the guidance and direction of successful healthcare executives.
The Preceptorship is a critical component of the practitioner-educator model and an essential element in establishing the student’s management skill set.
