Applied Practice Experience (IPHS 650)- The applied practice experiences allow each student to demonstrate attainment of at least five competencies, of which at least three must be foundational competencies. Students must also select at least one competency from their concentration(s) (ex. Generalist, Global Health, MCH). The applied experiences may also address additional foundational or concentration-specific competencies, if appropriate.
Overall Applied Practice Experience Objective: Students will acquire experience and develop skills in the application of basic public health informatics concepts and specialty knowledge to the solution of public health/healthcare problems.
Applied Practice Experience Learning Objectives: Through the Applied Practice Experience, PHI students will be able to: • • •
Apply public health informatics concepts and knowledge in a practice setting. Complete a defined project and demonstrate public health informatics competence in an area of public health practice or healthcare setting. Demonstrate public health informatics skills and knowledge in an area of interest not covered in depth elsewhere in their educational plan.
Students are encouraged to choose a topic and a preceptor from a setting close to their workplaces or home.

Integrative Learning Experience (IPHS 698) All MPH PHI students are required to complete an Integrative Learning Experience project. The Integrative Learning Experience (ILE) may be based on a variety of activities (e.g., a written product with potential practice relevance). Integrative Learning Experience requirements differ by division. For the Integrative Learning Experience product requirements by Division, please consult your Academic Advisor.
Registering for the MPH Integrative Learning Experience (IPHS 698) PHI students must register for 1 SH of IPHS 698 in the semester immediately prior to graduation. Students must complete the IPHS Registration Form found at: http://publichealth.uic.edu/current-students/student-forms.
Evaluation / Grading Procedures: The Integrative Learning Experience paper will be reviewed, evaluated and graded by a Program Director/ Advisor.
