Exclusive Lecture Series Hosted by Asian Studies Major in Fall 2023

War and War Politics in Korea & East Asia

On September 27, 2023, the Department of Asian Studies (AS) hosted a special lecture titled "War and War Politics in Korea & East Asia,” offering profound insights into the region’s delicate geopolitics. The lecture featured two leading academics From Tokyo, Professor of Politics and International Affairs Jae-Jung Suh of International Christian University, who examined recent developments in the region-wide arms race toward first-strike capability, and Professor Dong-Choon Kim of Sungkonghoe University, who discussed "war politics" in South Korea, and how the specter of external and internal enemies has been sustained. The lecture proved remarkably timely, given the looming possibility of another heated conflict in and around the Korean peninsula. It was a captivating call to reassess our viewpoints—a subtle nod to the Latin 're-specere'—urging a renewed scrutiny of the forces shaping peace and conflict dynamics in East Asia.
