Each year, you will have access to hundreds of internship and job announcements, some of which are sent exclusively to the College of Natural Resources by employers that value our students. University of Idaho Career Services will help you write a resume, compose a cover letter, practice valuable interviewing skills and even show you how to complete a job application. FINANCIAL AID and SCHOLARSHIPS There are several ways to pay for your college education. Financial Aid: A range of financial support is available, including grants, scholarships and loans. Scholarships: College of Natural Resources students have access to more than 80 natural resource scholarships worth over $350,000 thanks to the generous support of alumni, parents of alumni, private and public organizations, and other benefactors. Work: Most College of Natural Resources students earn some portion of their tuition, and we have many work-study and student employment opportunities right here at the college, including jobs at the Pitkin Forest Nursery and the U of I Experimental Forests. ACADEMICS

ECOLOGY and CONSERVATION BIOLOGY uidaho.edu/cnr/goecb

A degree in this challenging, yet flexible major will prepare you to sustainably manage ecosystems, conserve biological diversity and protect rare, threatened or endangered animals and plants through the use of science. Your classes will include laboratory and interdisciplinary coursework from natural resource sciences as well as social sciences. You will lead your own research project and work one-on-one with faculty through completion of your senior thesis capstone project.

Ty Styhl, a graduate in ecology and conservation biology, recently received a highly competitive National Science Foundation fellowship. He had the chance to continue his education at any graduate school, but he chose to continue his studies at University of Idaho, under the mentorship of leading professors in the College of Natural Resources. 5

Study the human impact on the natural world. Explore a wide range of concepts in this interdisciplinary program that includes faculty from a variety of disciplines— including law, agriculture, engineering, art, architecture and natural resources. Environmental science students build a foundation in both science and policy while analyzing complex issues such as air quality, water rights, forest use, and oil and gas development. Your first course will cover a range of environmental topics to help you decide where you want to take your studies.

FIRE ECOLOGY and MANAGEMENT

Study with leading fire experts in one of the first fire science degree programs in the nation. You will learn to address natural resource management problems and other important environmental, political, economic and social issues related to wildland fires. Examine why and how wildfires burn in many different types of ecosystems and explore the effects of wildfire on the plants and animals that live in these impacted environments.

Research at the University of Idaho’s 10,000+ acres of Experimental Forests and in the iFire lab, the only university-housed wildfire combustion lab in the United States Experience using spatial analysis software and remote sensing tools to observe and predict fire movements in the Reveley Geospatial Laboratory

Our Fire Ecology and Management degree is certified through the Association for Fire Ecology, which recognizes programs that serve as models for fire education and research.

FISHERY RESOURCES

Restoring fish species, caring for aquatic ecosystems and informing policy decisions are all part of this researchintensive major. In our program, you will build a strong foundation in fish biology, fish ecology, aquaculture and fishery management. You will have the opportunity to engage in undergraduate research in one of our three oncampus fish labs where you will work alongside faculty at the forefront of their fields.

Hands-on labs and classes taught by world-renowned experts in fish disease, genetics and population management Field trips to some of the most unique learning environments in the country, including the Frank Church/ River of No Return Wilderness in central Idaho

Associate Professor Chris Caudill oversees the Pacific Lamprey Migration Project which aims to help the long, snake-like fish make it to their upriver spawning grounds. While they may look strange, lamprey are an important food source and provide marine nutrients to streams for others species such as salmon.

As a student in this nationally recognized program, you will investigate forest ecosystems, sustainable forestry practices, and forest and watershed management. You will learn the knowledge and skills needed to create sustainable management plans that balance the many demands placed on our nation’s forests. Students gain critical skills through experiences on our Experimental Forests and in our laboratories.

NATURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION

You will learn about environmental policies, how to conserve and restore landscapes, and how to communicate and teach about conservation. You will have the opportunity to work with diverse stakeholders across disciplines in both public and private sectors.

In-depth study in all disciplines related to natural resource management, including fishery resources, wildlife resources, forestry resources, fire ecology, rangeland conservation, renewable materials, environmental policy and environmental communication Hands-on projects that involve public participation and/or a professional summer work experience in the natural resource area of your choice

Michelle Benedum, a natural resource conservation graduate, found many opportunities at the College of Natural Resources to study and work directly in her field, including serving as a research assistant for the college’s Policy Analysis Group. Her experiences, both in class and on the job, helped her find her career path, working in natural resource policy issues in the U.S. and abroad. 10 10

RANGELAND CONSERVATION uidaho.edu/cnr/gorange Learn about these open spaces that cover half of the Earth’s land surface. Study in the classroom and outdoors, examining the effects of soil composition, animal grazing and climate change on rangeland health. Rangeland conservation graduates are in high demand for an array of jobs, including careers focused on restoration ecology, wildlife habitat management, and land and livestock management.

Learn about range by going out on the range. All students in this major take a five-day overnight trip to parts of Idaho and Oregon, collecting field data, taking measurements and identifying plants.

Well-educated leaders are needed to develop sustainable new products and manufacturing processes. In our renewable materials program, you will learn the science behind the manufacture and use of biomaterials as well as the business elements associated with commercialization of products in the market. The renewable materials program is accredited by the Society of Wood Science and Technology.

Lab experiences that challenge you to make new products from organic materials Research in the growing fields of bio-based energy and bio-plastics Integrated business curriculum that teaches you how to manufacture and market the bio-based products you create

Your first class in renewable materials introduces you to the many possibilities that exist in creating products from waste and plant-based materials. You will love creating brand new functional items from discarded materials like milk jugs and organic materials like pine needles, seed cones and saw dust.

WILDLIFE RESOURCES uidaho.edu/cnr/gowild Learn how to manage wildlife sustainably, and identify and minimize threats to wildlife populations in our hands-on, science-based wildlife program. Build a strong science foundation through coursework in chemistry, biology, ecology and genetics. You will study relevant environmental, social and political issues to better understand the challenges related to wildlife policy and management.

Veronica Bridges is a first generation, nontraditional college student who realized a deep interest in wildlife conservation while working for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. She found the right fit at the College of Natural Resources wildlife resources program. She is now working toward the career of her dreams—and with the help of scholarships, plans to graduate debt-free. 13 13

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Franklin H. Pitkin Forest Nursery Taylor Wilderness Research Station Students can conduct research or spend a Semester in the Wild at this unique research station located in the heart of Frank Church/ River of No Return Wilderness, the largest wilderness area in the lower 48 states.

Undergraduate Summer Field Camp in McCall Learn outside and hear directly from professionals in the field at this fun and intensive three-week camp at the McCall Field Campus in the mountains of central Idaho.

University of Idaho Experimental Forests With access to more than 10,000 acres of forest you can apply what you learn in the classroom to the natural world immediately. 14 14

Supplement your studies through educational employment in our hands-on teaching facility. Study all aspects of nursery production and management, and learn the processes for selecting seedlings for restoration, reforestation and conservation.

Reveley Geospatial Laboratory for Environmental Dynamics Use remote sensing and geographic information system technologies in a cuttingedge laboratory to identify problems and solutions in natural resource management.

Undergraduate Research Experience Learn by conducting research alongside top faculty while developing skills highly valued by employers. One-year stipends are available for new first-year and transfer students enrolled full-time in the college.

Leadership Build leadership skills during your first semester by attending the College of Natural Resources Student Leadership Retreat. During this weekend event, students meet with career professionals, learn skills for different leadership scenarios and create friendships that last a lifetime. Second year students can also apply for the CNR Student Ambassador program. A high honor, ambassadors develop communication and leadership skills while networking with professionals and establishing working relationships across the University of Idaho.

College of Natural Resources Living Learning Community CNR has its own residence hall open to all natural resources students. Enjoy living with other students who share your field of study and passion for the outdoors. Study with your roommates in convenient on-site meeting rooms.
