Welcome

TO THE FESTIVAL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO!

W

elcome to a hallmark of Vandal excellence – our acclaimed Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. These two days and nights of music education and concerts exemplify the University of Idaho’s long commitment to transformative experiences for students and for deep engagement with arts and culture. I’m proud to welcome students, families, educators and community members to the “Heart of the Arts” in Moscow and to our university. The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival has for more than half a century brought notable musicians to Idaho. We’re excited to build on that tradition this year as we are joined by acts like the Grammy-Award winning Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Dawn Clement and Paul McKee. We are proud to present the New Lionel Hampton Big Band featuring Joseph Doubleday with special guest Antonia Bennett. The student performances and workshops, clinics and special events at the festival create a rich learning and creative environment. We bring that to the community outside Moscow, too, through the Jazz in Schools program that reaches thousands of students every year in regional K-12 schools. Jazz is a multifaceted, ever-changing art form that respects tradition while always seeking new directions. The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival has captured that dynamic spirit again for 2019. Thank you for joining us – let’s enjoy the music and see where it takes us. Sincerely,

Chuck Staben President

JAZZ in the SCHOOLS

azz in the Schools, the festival’s community outreach program, takes master musicians and educators to regional K-12 schools throughout the year. There is no cost to participating schools. The program provides teachers and students with jazz education materials, activities and an interactive presentation with educators and artists. Jazz in the Schools meets a very real need in the community, particularly in areas that don’t have access to high quality arts programming. It helps to foster an appreciation of music and the arts, and of how music can be an important and even transformative part of our lives. The Jazz in the Schools program reaches students in K-12 schools in Northern Idaho and Eastern Washington during the week of festival. Artists and music educators travel to the various schools to share and educate students in the art of jazz. Now in its 27th year, the program was designed to share the beauty and grace of this truly American art form. This vision continues to guide the program. Under the direction of Vanessa Sielert and Josh Skinner, this program continues to grow and improve its presentations to regional schools.

Vanguard Jazz Orchestra The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra is the current title for a band that began its life as Thad Jones/Mel Lewis and The Jazz Orchestra in 1966 and has performed continuously over 50 years.

continued the innovation and influence that Thad and Mel had begun. Bob moved on to other projects and ultimately also settled in Europe, the new material coming from within the band now.

In 1966 cornetist, composer, arranger, Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis founded a band in New York. Having settled in New York after leaving their respective touring jobs with Basie and Kenton, Thad and Mel along with many of their colleagues needed an outlet for their creative energies and relief from the tedium of the studio work.

In 1990 the band would endure a terrible blow when Mel Lewis died after a 5-year battle with cancer. For the members, all of whom had been there 5 years and several over 10, losing Mel was a deep family tragedy, for great bands invariably become families. The decision was made to move forward as a cooperative endeavor with the music as its front man.

With a handful of arrangements, they approached legendary club owner Max Gordon and were booked at the Village Vanguard for 3 Mondays in February. Critical acclaim, awards and international success followed but in 1979, tired of frequent traveling and the economic uncertainty that even great jazz musicians endure in America, Thad left the band to accept leadership of the Danish Radio Orchestra in Copenhagen. Mel decided to continue the band, now billed as Mel Lewis and the Jazz Orchestra, and enlisted the talents of his old friend and former band member Bob Brookmeyer who miraculously was just returning to active playing and composing in New York. The band not only survived, but with Brookmeyer’s writing

So three weeks have become a permanent gig spanning over five decades and another name change: The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Several of the current key members played for Thad, so the original precepts of sound and swing are proudly held and displayed while the other original precepts of creativity and experimentation are nurtured and encouraged. The Village Vanguard is still a great place to be on a Monday night no matter which side of the bandstand you’re on.

Joseph Doubleday, Vibes Antonia Bennett, Voice

All of the members of The New Lionel Hampton Big Band played with Lionel Hampton himself. The Lionel Hampton Estate, eager that people experience Hamp’s music in 2015, authorized the launch of the New Lionel Hampton Big Band featuring Jason Marsalis, with Christian Fabian, Cleave Guyton, Jr. and Lance Bryant as co-leaders. All the band leaders played with Lionel Hampton; Lance was the Lionel Hampton Orchestra musical director and principal arranger, Cleave was the last musical director of the band, and Christian remains the bass chair of the last Big Band led by Lionel Hampton. In this incarnation of the Band, musicians trained at the start of their careers by Hamp himself, and Antonia, whose parents played with Hamp, brings Lionel Hampton’s music into the next generation. The Band has been playing sold-out shows with many encores from coast to coast. Their enthusiastic audiences transcend age and gender, ranging from 21-year-old exchange students to 94-year-old jazz aficionados.

The National Medal of Arts, the nation’s most prestigious arts award, was presented to the festival in

UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO

November 2007 by President George W. Bush. The University of Idaho became the first public university to receive the award since it was created by Congress in 1984. The first University of Idaho Jazz Festival took place in 1967 with a dozen student groups and one guest artist. The festival continued to grow from there, erupting onto the national stage in 1981 when students and spectators packed in to hear Ella Fitzgerald. In 1984, the festival’s most important relationship took shape when Lionel Hampton joined the excitement in Moscow. Inspired by the enthusiasm of the students, Hamp pledged his support to the festival. This was the beginning of a longstanding partnership between Hampton, Emeritus Executive Director Lynn J. Skinner and the festival. In 1985, the festival took on Hampton’s name and became the first jazz festival named for an African-American jazz musician. Lionel Hampton was one of the most extraordinary musicians of the 20th century, and his artistic achievements symbolize

the impact jazz music has had on our culture. Given his first drum lessons by a Dominican nun at the Holy Rosary Academy of Wisconsin, Hampton evolved into a well-respected and welldeveloped musician. In 1930, Hampton was called to a recording session with Louie Armstrong, and during a break, Hampton walked over to a vibraphone and started to play. He ended up playing the vibes on a song during the session, and the song became a hit. Hampton had introduced a new voice to jazz, and he soon became the “King of the Vibes.” Hampton went on to create more than 200 works including the jazz standards “Flying Home,” “Evil Gal Blues” and “Midnight Sun.” He also composed the major symphonic work, “King David Suite.” Hampton began working with the University of Idaho in the early 1980s to establish his dream for the future of music education. In 1985, the university named its jazz festival after him, and in 1987, the university’s music school was named the Lionel Hampton School of Music.

Over the next 20 years, the University of Idaho developed an unprecedented relationship with Hampton to ensure his vision lived on through the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, the School of Music and the International Jazz Collections. Lionel Hampton passed away in 2002, but his legacy lives on. In 2016, the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival returned to the Lionel Hampton School of Music in the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences, where it initially got its start in 1967. Vern Sielert became the artistic advisor and Vanessa Sielert the education advisor in 2016, with Josh Skinner joining as festival manager in 2018.

LYNN “DOC” SKINNER Dr. Lynn “Doc” Skinner has been part of the Jazz Festival since he arrived in Moscow as the director of music education at the University of Idaho. In 1972, Doc offered to help Music Professor and Festival Director Rich Werner. When the Jazz Festival needed a new director in 1976, he accepted the position and served as executive director until 2007. During his tenure as executive director of the festival, he brought some of the greatest jazz artists to Moscow including Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Toots Thielemans, Ray Brown and Sarah Vaughan – and Lionel Hampton to the festival in 1984. Doc and Hamp’s friendship was a major and inspiring part of the festival, focusing on education and cultivating the next generation of jazz musicians. His efforts over the years culminated in 2008, when the University of Idaho Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival received the National Medal of Arts, the nation’s most prestigious arts award, from President George W. Bush. In 2010 Doc received the Governor’s Awards in the Arts for Support of Arts Education from Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter.

JAZZ FACULTY

Vern Sielert, Director of Jazz Studies,

Kate Skinner, Jazz Piano, Jazz Band II

Jazz Choirs

Vern Sielert is professor of trumpet and jazz studies at the University of Idaho. He holds bachelor of music degrees in jazz studies and music education, and a master’s degree in jazz studies from the University of North Texas, and a doctor of musical arts in trumpet performance from the University of Illinois. His compositions and arrangements for jazz orchestra are performed by high school, college and professional groups around the world, including the C.U.G. Big Band (Japan), U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors, and the Count Basie Orchestra. His playing can be heard on recent recordings by the Unhinged Sextet, Palouse Jazz Project, Dan Gailey Jazz Orchestra, Greg Yasinitsky’s YAZZ Band, Bob Curnow Big Band, and Phil Kelly’s Northwest Prevailing Winds.

Kate Skinner is a jazz instructor in the Lionel Hampton School of Music and is currently a doctoral candidate in jazz studies at the University of Northern Colorado, studying orchestral conducting as a secondary area. As a jazz pianist and vocalist, Skinner maintains an active performing, composing and teaching career in the western United States. A native of Ogden, Utah, Skinner pulls influences from the bluegrass and classical roots of her childhood into both her songwriting and performing as a jazz musician. In her teenage and college years, Kate delved into R&B, funk and hip hop, genres that also continually find their way into her musical explorations helping to create her own unique voice. Part of this unique voice is an obsession with alternative keyboard instruments and a study of the great keyboardists of jazz, rock and funk.

Daniel Bukvich has been a member of the faculty of the Lionel Hampton School of Music since 1978. His compositions and arrangements are performed world wide by symphonic bands, wind ensembles, orchestral winds, choirs, jazz bands, symphony orchestras and marching bands. He is a professor of music at the Lionel Hampton School of Music at the University of Idaho. He teaches percussion, freshman music theory and ear training, composition and jazz choirs. Dan Bukvich is a recipient of the 2012 U.S. Professor of the Year Award for the State of Idaho.
