Abstract:Thesearchforextraterrestrial lifealongwithourdesiretounderstandthe necessaryconditionsforthedevelopmentof lifearelargemotivatorsinthefieldofastronomy.AlthoughtheEarthremainsas oursoledatapoint,itseemsoverwhelmingly likelythateitherotherSolarSystembodiesordistantexoplanetshad,have,orwill havethecapacitytohostlifeoftheirown. Nonetheless,theassessmentofaworld’spotentialforhabitabilityisacomplexproblemthatrequiresthoroughstudyofmany contributingaspects.Onekeyaspectisthe valueandevolutionofaplanet’sobliquity, oraxialtilt,whichsetsthenatureofitsseasonsandlong-termclimatebygoverningthe distributionofsolarfluxacrossitssurface. Althoughweenjoyapleasantclimatethanks totheEarth’sstablemoderateobliquity, otherplanetarybodiesmaybeeithereven betterofforseverelychallengedincompari-
son.Inmydissertation,Ihelpbuildtoward amorecompletepictureofhabitabilityby studyingplanetaryobliquityevolutionwith theuseofnumericalsimulationsofplanetary systems.BeginningwithChapter1,Iprovideabriefbackgroundofthedynamicsthat driveobliquityevolutionanddescribepreviousworkthatestablishesourcurrentunderstandingmovingforward.InChapter2,I discussathreateningsecularspin-orbitresonancethatcandestabilizetheobliquities ofretrograderotators(planetswithobliquitiesgreaterthan90degrees).Next,in Chapter3IintroduceSMERCURY-T,a toolthatallowsforthestudyofplanetary obliquityevolutionundertheinfluenceof tidalforces.Finally,inChapter4Iapply SMERCURY-Ttostudythetidalobliquity evolutionofamoonlessEarthandapotentiallyhabitableearlyVenus.Eachofthese chaptersprovideswidercontributionspast theirindividualresultsbyurgingdirection tofuturestudies,releasingpubliclyavailable software,oridentifyingtrendsandprocess thatmaybeimportanttotheobliquityevolutionofextrasolarplanets.Thesefindings canideallybeappliedtosuchexoplanetsystemsinthefutureandfurtherourcapability todetectandcharacterizetheirspinstates.
