Hi! I’m Josh! I’m a sophomore at an American high school.

Every morning my alarm clock rings at 6.30 am. Then I get up, have breakfast, have a shower and brush my teeth. The school bus picks me up at 7.15 am.

My school day starts at 8.00 am. We have six to eight lessons every day.

At noon we have a lunch break that lasts an hour.

In between the lessons we have short breaks of five minutes. That is because we have to change classrooms every hour. Every teacher has his or her own classroom. This means that we have to walk around a lot because most schools in my area only have one floor. It’s cheaper that way, plus there’s enough land to build on anyway.

Every day, we have the same lessons in the same order. There are some classes that everyone has to take, like English or maths, but there are a lot of different levels. You can choose from about a hundred different classes, depending on what you want to learn.

GLOSSARY sophomore: a student in the second year of an American high school

Classes end at 3 pm. But we don’t go home straight away. Most students are in clubs, like the chess club, photography club or the drama club.

Schools in America focus a lot on sports as well. Every high school has its own football, basketball and baseball team. And it’s a big honor if you can get in one of those teams.

And the honor of the school is also at stake, so the teams have a lot of supporters whenever they play.

I’d really love to hear about the kind of school you go to!
