1 Learning about physical appearance

1 Listen to the conversation between Sam, Dario and their friends.

a What is the topic of the conversation? b Read the conversation. Sam Ugh. I really don’t like this new PE teacher. What is her name again? Dario Miss Ryder. She seems nice to me. Sam She seems nice? Hmmm. Do you think she’s pretty? Dario Don’t be silly. I don’t like blondes. Sam Is that the only reason? Or is she too curvy? Dario Not really. I like curvy girls, not that there’s anything wrong with being thin. Lee Ching Yeah, we know he thinks Sam is cute. So he must fancy redheads with curls and green eyes. Layla Such a pity that I’m a brunette. I think Dario is quite handsome. I really like his dark skin. Lee Ching I like tanned skin, but I like fair skin as well. And I am a softy for freckles. Layla Hmmm ... if you like red hair and freckles, Nathan is your perfect match. I’m sure he is a fan of your black hair and hazel eyes. You look exotic. Ms Ryder Okay everyone. We need two teams. Let’s see ... Dario and Lee Ching are team captains. You can choose who you want on your teams. Nathan I hate it when we have to play in teams like this. I’m so short. I am always the last one to be picked. Grace Oh, come on, you’re okay! The best gifts always come in small packages. Wilson Well, that’s horrible news for me then. I'm a really big package. And I don’t mean my height. Morgan I think you look amazing Wilson. Great gifts come in all sizes if you ask me. Wilson That’s easy for you to say, Morgan. You’re tall, blond and beautiful. Proefhoofdstuk©VANIN Ali Look around, mate. We’re all different sizes and colours. Sure, I look like a god with my long black hair and brown eyes. But everyone is different. As long as you feel comfortable in your own skin there is nothing to worry about. Wilson I guess you’re right. I know I’m a bit chubby, but my brother says I look like a whale. I usually ignore him, but it isn’t always easy. It hurts my feelings, you know.

Morgan That’s called body shaming and it is not okay. It doesn’t matter what you look like. It’s what is on the inside that counts. What gives your brother the right to say such mean things? He isn’t skinny, is he? Wilson Not really. Maybe he is uncomfortable in his skin? Ali Yeah, he’s probably jealous of your good looks. I find you very attractive. Wilson Alright, alright, that’s a little much. Ms Ryder Is there a problem, guys? All No, Ms Ryder. Ms Ryder Then stop talking so we can make the teams up. All Yes, Ms Ryder. c Who’s who? How to cheer someone up: 10 ways to make a friend smile Here's exactly how to make someone feel better by McKenzie Terry MARCH 25, 2020

1 10 15

When your bestie is down in the dumps, all you want to do is cheer them up. We've got tons of ideas for how to cheer someone up, no matter the situation! Some of the ideas here might be cheesy or feel silly, but didn't you say you'd do anything to lift your pal up? There is sure to be something on this list that can turn any frown upside down. 1 First off, find out if the person you’re trying to cheer up actually wants your help! It's important to get someone's permission to cheer them up. Otherwise it might feel to them like you're uncomfortable with how they feel and just want to make it go away. 2 Notes are always a great way to let that friend, who maybe gets a little uncomfortable when it comes to the emotional stuff, know you still care. It makes people feel thought of. You can give them words or mantras to cheer them up and to replace their negative thoughts. Write something cute, fold it up, and slip it somewhere for them to find later. 5 Proefhoofdstuk©VANIN 3

20 Come up with a clever nickname. The funnier it is, the better. It’s not only a great way to get them laughing right now, but it will be your secret weapon to get them to laugh in the future too.

Taking out at least an hour or two every week for an activity you enjoy can help you relax. Help your friend feel better by taking the time to do something they like to do, even if it’s playing video games.

30 35 40 45 50 55 5 Baking has a therapeutic effect, because the act of measuring, mixing and paying attention to a recipe often takes your whole attention. You actually create peace in your mind, which pushes away many negative thoughts and emotions. The delicious smells also produce happy feelings. If it gives them a smile, it'll be worth it. Find all the silly videos of babies dancing, clumsy moments, and dogs being dogs. Tag them in any and every thing that might give them a laugh. 7 Talking is one of the most effective ways to cheer someone up. Encourage your friend to share their feelings! Teenagers (especially girls) often say that when they are stressed they want someone to talk to about things. Be there for them. Listen to them. If they aren’t interested in talking, invite them to do an activity with you and the chances are, they will start talking. 8 Grab some noodles and have at it. Try to avoid getting hit by any means necessary. Remember: the more endorphins you release, the happier you BOTH will be. (This is one of our favourite things for cheering someone up!) 9 Another idea for how to cheer someone up? Watch movies together! This is an especially good idea if your friend doesn't feel like talking just yet. Grab some popcorn and watch one of the best feel-good movies on Netflix. 10 If a friend goes through a dark period that lasts longer than a few weeks without having at least some good days or if they want to hurt themselves, this is the time to call a parent, a teacher or another adult they trust. If the friend is really depressed, you might not be able to help, no matter how much you try. They will be lucky to have a friend like you to tell their parents or another adult about their problems so that they can begin their treatment and recovery.
