Like a Slice of Christmas Stollen

The winter months are a time of coming together, traditions and reflection. In this edition of Eindless we want to offer a place where all these elements come together. While the cold air outside surrounds us, we bring you stories and insights that radiate warmth and connection.

You will meet designer Boey Wang, who is committed to inclusion by developing kitchen tools especially for the visually impaired; a reminder of how small, well-thought-out innovations can have a big impact. The winners of the Eindhoven Culture Prize share their joy and indicate how they will use their prizes. We also delve deeper into the work of Stichting Anders, an inspiring force within the Brainport region that removes obstacles to people’s self-reliance and thus pushes boundaries in a very concrete way.

There is also a brand-new Burst your Bubble, with the story of Ajay, that broadens your horizons with a simple do-it-yourself. We bring you the inspiring activities from the Fontys School of Life, where personal growth and social involvement are their focus points. In our World Dishes & Traditions section, we celebrate the Dutch Christmas Stollen; a dish that symbolizes warmth and sharing traditions.

Overview

Podia&Expo December’24 / January ‘25

Closer than you think

Luka van den Herik

‘Closer than you think. I hear myself say that statement more and more to explain that poverty can happen to you. That sometimes you don’t have it all under control and are surprised by an unexpected situation such as illness, domestic violence or bankruptcy and that this can make you feel deeply depressed. People in these vulnerable situations often get stuck because of this.’

These are the words of Luka van den Herik, Stichting Anders Coordinator. Together with Bart and Diana, she is part of the core team.

‘With Stichting Anders, we want to get a stalled situation moving again. Not only is poverty closer than you think, but the same applies to the solution. That is why we also visit people at home to discuss the practical help they need; we think along with them, and we also encourage them to get started themselves first or with help through their own network.

Only when that doesn’t work, we bring these stories to energetic entrepreneurs and ask them to help with what they’re good at, for free. They are impressed by such a story and, for example, donate a floor covering, make a removal van available or connect a stove.

With Stichting Anders, we make the connection, we make a match between the person seeking help and the entrepreneur, and I think it is important to mention that we work ‘demand-driven’ from the person seeking help. As the icing on the cake, we challenge the person seeking help to become a helper. So, to pass on a good deed to someone else, a Pay it Forward. What is striking here is that many people are already doing this, they do volunteer work or, for example, bring a leftover meal to the neighbours. And by being of significance to someone else in this way, the circle is complete for us.

If you recognise yourself or someone who is in such a situation and is stuck, you can always contact us. The same call to entrepreneurs: do you want to be part of this wonderful network with your company and make a difference for people in the region? Do not hesitate to get in touch. Together we will find a way.’

‘Let’s follow the D Boey Wang

When I was still living in Milan, attending design week was a special experience. The city changed completely: eccentric people in bright colours brought the streets to life. My friends and I were curious about the Dutch exhibitions which stood out for their practical approach to spatial planning and high-quality innovative design proposals. Among us, the saying went: ‘Let’s follow the Dutch’. Almost magical. Every year it happens during DDW, the event where all sorts of things are created and developed in a unique, energetic atmosphere.

Designers have a unique gift for making the unthinkable thinkable. One of the most distinctive design projects was the inclusive work of Chinese designer, Boey Wang.

How did you end up in Eindhoven? Do you like living here?

‘Eindhoven has become a comfortable place for me, where I feel connected to the design community and where I can base my work on the inclusive values that I cherish. This environment challenges my perspective and encourages me to approach design experimentally, especially to explore how to make experiences tangible and intuitive. The Academy gave me essential design skills and a transformative vision of design. The perspective on design ‘as a powerful, human-centered tool for social change,’ differs greatly from my experience in China, where design is often seen primarily as decorative.

I discovered the power of hands-on experimentation to shape human behaviour, perception, ethics and culture. Functional innovation, which closely aligns with my dream to realise tangible, lasting social change. The Academy and the design community have provided me with irreplaceable support and challenged me to question norms and think independently. That has become the basis of my development and has deepened my connection to this city. It is a great pleasure to live and work here.’

How would you describe inclusive design?

‘Inclusive design is about creating meaningful experiences that everyone can relate to, regardless of physical or social differences. It should not only be accessible, but also foster a natural and intuitive connection that enriches the experience for everyone. For my collection Haptics of Cooking, I developed tools that seamlessly integrate into daily life.

What was your inspiration for this collection?

‘I noticed a clear void in the market for inclusive kitchenware. By focusing on the tactile aspect, I wanted to create something that makes the sensory experience equal for everyone. This collection embodies that vision: functionality and inclusive accessibility are combined with a refined aesthetic. I launched the brand Sensory Cooking and was able to work with Homeij in Den Bosch to bring the concept to the market. Inclusive design often struggles to attract investment. This is because the focus is socially innovative rather than purely commercial. Yet this step is important, both for me and for the advancement of the inclusive design field. It shows that socially impactful products can reach a wider audience.’

How did the Creative Industries Fund NL help you?

‘Their support started at a crucial moment, just after I graduated. Due to the COVID19 pandemic, exhibitions and work opportunities were severely limited. I was fortunate enough to be part of their Talent Development Programme, which allowed me to explore, experiment and learn from my successes and failures during this challenging period, while also transforming my student project into a viable business. The Stimuleringsfonds allowed me to take root in the Netherlands as a young, international, graduate. Thanks to their support and resources, I was able to refine every element of the design and make the products meet functional and inclusive standards. In addition to the funding, they were instrumental in helping me shape my design vision and methodology and supported my presentations at DDW and exhibitions abroad.’

How was your experience at Dutch Design Week?

‘This was my third year in a row exhibiting in the Klokgebouw, and I am truly grateful for the trust and support. I want to bring accessible, tangible design to the market - a mission that aligns with their vision; they want to create tangible social effect through design. DDW provided a great platform to connect directly with the public, where both sighted and visually impaired visitors could experience the tangible features of Sensory Cooking first-hand. It validated my work and gave me the insights I need to build my ‘responsive, value-driven business with lasting effect’. At the end of the exhibition, a particularly moving moment occurred. An elderly gentleman came specially to my presentation, despite his age and visual impairment. He carefully examined each piece and shared his thoughts with me. Navigating such a noisy and bright space was not easy for him, but he made the effort to be there and asked me how to say ‘thank you’ in Chinese. This touched me deeply and gave me a lot of affirmation.’

What is your opinion of the Brainport region?

‘The Brainport region has had a great influence on my development as a designer and entrepreneur. It is a thriving ecosystem with a deeply open and optimistic mindset, respecting diverse perspectives and encouraging innovative, forward-looking ideas. I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to study and start my business here. This inclusive environment has allowed me to realise my dreams. As someone from a minority background, I strive to unite people through functional, thoughtful design that respects life and emphasises shared human values. My work in tactile and sensory design is rooted in this vision, and Brainport has given me the support and freedom to explore and bring these ideas to the market. I see myself as a bridge connecting Eastern and Western approaches to inclusive design. I am extremely grateful to be able to contribute to the long-term vision of this region, which fosters individual growth and collective progress, making it one of the world’s leading hubs for design and innovation.’

utch’

‘Coming to Eindhoven from Luoyang to study design, and especially learning to ‘think with your hands’ at the Design Academy Eindhoven, has been transformative for me. The Design Academy is truly where my heart lies. Here I have progressed not only as a designer, but also as a person.’
‘Functional innovation, which closely aligns with my dream to realise tangible, lasting social change’

ABOUT CHINA & BRAINPORT

The Chinese community in the Brainport region is growing, especially among students and professionals in technology and engineering.

zAbout 25.6% of international students in Eindhoven come from outside Europe, including many Chinese. They contribute to the region’s innovation system. Some stay for short periods of time to study or work, while others want to settle permanently, which is supported by family-friendly facilities, international schools and integration programmes in Eindhoven.

COLUMN MATHILDE

Kinship

While digging through the bookcase I come across it: a large, black but thin book with the title ‘The school - to Bartel Lageman’ in gold, elegant letters. I vaguely remember that I had already let this book pass through my hands, but I have no idea what it contains. Curiously I open it. Immediately a letter falls out in beautiful handwriting, written with a fountain pen. It is a thank-you letter from the Education Inspector to my grandfather who, in 1930, was about to leave for Indonesia to work there as a teacher. ‘If you need me, I will be happy to help you,’ the Inspector said to my grandfather. This beautiful book in my hands turns out to be a collection of stories from the time my grandfather spent as a teacher in Indonesia. Leafing through the book I come across my grandfather. Dressed in a white suit and tie - that is apparently what a teacher looked like in the tropics. In front of him, a huge group of children watching breathlessly at Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet, who apparently also visited Indonesia. It could hardly have been more colonial, I think. Reading further in the book, I get a different picture. My grandfather turned out to be an advocate of public education for everyone.

‘Society can only be served by school education where respect for the other person’s philosophy of life is a pre-requisite. A community in which all kinds of beliefs, races and nationalities share and live together.’ I read these two solemn sentences a few times and try to remember my grandfather. My grandfather died when I was very young, and I never really got to know him because of that. What immediately comes to mind is that my twin sister and I always received joint presents from him on our birthdays. I still feel the disappointment that we had to share the tea set. The fact that it was an expensive and large present did not count. I must laugh about it now, that is how a child’s brain works: you want something for yourself, you will learn to share later. Maybe my grandfather wanted to teach us this early on.

My grandfather wasn’t talked about much at home. My father had no contact with him for a long time. The family my father grew up in fell apart due to the Japanese occupation of Indonesia. My father disappeared into the boys’ camp for three years because he was already ten years old, all alone. My grandmother and aunt went to the women’s camp. My father never told me where my grandfather stayed. In any case, he was not with his family. I do not know whether he was imprisoned in a camp or escaped. In any case, he did not return to the Netherlands with his family when the war ended. How painful must it have been to have to make the crossing to the Netherlands without him after all the hardships?

He apparently chose a life there. It was only much later that he returned to the Netherlands, and we cautiously made contact. Because of his death, this was short-lived.

Yet I now look at my grandfather differently. Not as my father looked at him, but through my own eyes. Thanks to the book I got to know him a little: this man was not afraid of change, was idealistic and had a big heart for education. So that’s in the genes.

I recognise myself in him. To get to know yourself better, it helps to know something about your family history. I would have liked to get to know him even better.

‘This man was not afraid of change, was idealistic and had a great heart for education’

La Cetra Barockorchester & Vokalensemble Basel

‘Scusa!! Excuses’, wrote Claudio Monteverdi on December 29, 1616, to a friend. He had not been in touch for a while. ‘There was so much work to be done for Christmas’. As maestro di cappella of the famous San Marco in Venice, he was always incredibly busy in December composing for the evening service. So busy, in fact, that music by others was also performed. La Cetra reproduces a Christmas Eve in Venice with music by Monteverdi and his contemporaries. For these Venetian Vespers, Andrea Marcon has selected the finest parts from Monteverdi’s *Selva Morale e Spirituale*, complemented by works by Gabrieli, Grandi, and others. ‘Utterly irresistible and uplifting’, according to The Times. The concert opens with the jazzy “Sing, sing, sing” by Louis Prima/Benny Goodman, in a stirring arrangement by conductor Quentin Clare.

The talented 15-year-old soloist David Kooi plays the piano concerto by George Gershwin, a colorful collection of moods, feelings and atmosphere and typically American from beginning to end. The name of Dvořák’s 9th symphony “From the New World” is derived from the name ‘New World’ that is given in Europe to the continent of America. He composed the symphony during his stay in the US and is part of the iron repertoire of the most performed and beloved works in classical music.

Dutch Silent Film Festival

NSFF in Eindhoven is the largest film festival in the Netherlands in the field of silent films and takes place annually in January.

In this primal form of film, a story is told without words, but with emotion, facial expressions and music. That is what makes it so unique. From 16 to 19 January, it is already time for the eighth edition, with a varied programme of silent films, accompanied by top international musicians. The creativity and innovation of this earliest form of film deserve to be shown.

The programming mainly focuses on current developments in the world of silent film, such as recent rediscoveries, restorations and new research results. During the festival, both crowd pleasers and hidden gems can therefore be seen. The highlight of the festival, Slapstick Saturday, will be bigger than ever this year, with musical accompaniment by the Netherlands Film Orchestra and the addition of a matinee performance. My Cloak My Beloved

In the darkest period of the year, we are looking for warmth, affection and love. If we miss that, a thick warm cloak can be an alternative. However, if we miss a loved one, who has been left behind on an anonymous battlefield or lies under the rubble of a bombed house, then the cloak remains like an empty shell without value and without purpose, from which the soul has departed. During the period around Christmas, this installation by Luk Sponselee will be in the window of the T56 gallery as an ode and tribute to all mothers everywhere in the world, who have lost their child, partner, loved one to the horrors of war and violence. “...what use is a comfortable warm piece of clothing to a person, if a part of your soul and a loved one has been lost, without you having chosen it yourself? All those empty hanging cloaks represent to me a loss of what was dear to you. And then I always think first of our mothers, who have lost their fruit...”.

THU 23 JANUARY - SAT 2 FEBRUARY

On Gravity

Exhibition of paintings and installations by Jolanda Kooijmans. The work was created during the writing process of her new poetry collection Addertje, which will be published next spring. The book Addertje is a poetry collection with narrative poems about the devil. “The word ‘devil’ comes from the Greek ‘diabolo’ and means ‘doordewarschopper’, ‘confusion sower’.

This time with its fake news, its false prophets and its increasing hatred is a truly devilish time. At the same time, devils and demons also have the function of creating order in the chaos, a figure to direct our fears and misery. The snake or the man with the goat legs are no longer credible to me personally. How can we reimagine evil, or: how do we make the heaviness light?”

T56 GALERIE I EXPO

The Mountain Speaks to the Sea

The first solo exhibition in the Netherlands by Georgian filmmaker and artist Tekla Aslanishvili. It brings together her interdisciplinary and collaborative work and explores the complex mechanisms of infrastructure management, looking at the role of ports, railways and smart city projects as technologies of citizenship and sovereignty.

With a Bird,

This exhibition, curated by Marjolein van der Loo explores birds as boundary-crossers that inspire both our scientific and spiritual understanding of life. Birds are admired by humans for their ability to fly, navigate and sing. They have been intensively observed, studied and feature prominently in folk tales.

Alice is pleased to announce III = II, a solo exhibition by Jan van den Berg. During the exhibition the gallery will show a selection of works that provide a good impression of Van den Berg’s oeuvre and his successful career as an artist. His work is about space, an image of space or an illusion of space.

– 6 pm

Help! The show is about to start but there is no story yet. The writer has no idea what it should be about. Fortunately, there is a device that can help: The Robokop! The Robokop works fantastically, and the ideas roll out of the machine. But when the writer becomes curious about her own thoughts again, without the help of Robokop it seems impossible to get rid of the thing. It will not let itself be chased away so easily. Who will ultimately become the boss of the story?

Jong Cultuur Eindhoven, one of the talents:

LENA CLAESSEN

‘I’m interested in people who are up against the lack of margins in systems. In education, healthcare, politics. For Jong Cultuur Eindhoven, Erik Bukkems and Corinne Heyrman and I give a workshop series in which language and mental health are central.’ It was Erik (Eindhoven Maatjes/de creative word art workshops for Jong Cultuur), praising Lena Claessen as a talent. Lena won the Kunstbende Taal 2023 and the Jongcultuurprijs Cultuurfonds Limburg 2024. She writes, studies, connects and does a whole lot more.

Would you like to introduce yourself? ‘My name is Lena Claessen, I was born in 2004. I come from Roermond and study Nederlandse Taal en Cultuur at Radboud University in Nijmegen.’ Generation Z stands for digitally savvy, socially aware and resilient. Recognizable to you? ‘To summarize an entire generation in three keywords is quite something. For resilience to keep an eye on resilience. I regularly speak to policy makers and deal with social issues and complex social structures. To be able to keep that up and not harden, you have to be able to take a punch.’

What do you do? ‘I get involved in all kinds of things, find myself particularly on the interface between language and society. I write poetry and texts that border on that genre, won in 2023 won the Kunstbende with that. I also work with audio and image, interview many young people and collect stories of experience for the National Youth Council’

Participants of Jong Cultuur

What drives you? ‘Writing, or rather creating in in general, is for me a way to bring overview in my life. It works as an external filter. To be able to function in a society that is chafing on all sides, I have to have the idea that I can somehow can somehow contribute to improving it. Even if my contribution is minimal, and that realization is frustrating.’

What arts or creative projects do you enjoy?

‘I read a lot, love the layering in poems. Poetry is for me successful if the rhythm is exactly right or if an image lingers. The poems of Peter Verhelst and Laura Broekhuysen I could reread endlessly, and I am a big fan of Max Porter who seems to abandon the conventions of a fixed genre seems to let go. Other genres also inspire me, such as playwright Alexandra Broeder, who is a writer of combines psychiatry, religion and meaning with youth theatre and journalistic documentaries, such as Jojanneke and the Youth Care Tapes and On Hold by Prince the Fox.

What is Lena doing in the future? ‘I always have time shortage. There are so many projects I want to take up and I enjoy coordinating and executing them. I would love to combine between journalism, activism and creative work. And combining language with audio, film or theatre. I hope that the separation between my individual, creative texts and the more journalistic side becomes a little looser. I find the future quite complicated, everything is so shaky and uncertain, but I get a lot of satisfaction from creating and would very much like to hold on to that.’

Klooigeld (Money in the bank) PLAYING WITH MONEY RISK-FREE

Have you ever wished you could learn how to handle money well?

Third-year Fontys students Liz Meggelaars, Lian Willemse, Nynke

Eman and Robin van Schaik came up with a concept for this: Klooigeld. What started as a school assignment grew into an innovative project aimed at increasing the financial self-reliance of young people. Under the direction of this quartet, twelve ICT students in three groups worked on the Klooigeld app for ten weeks. Fontys School of Life helped develop the concept into a playful and risk-free learning method, in which making mistakes is encouraged as a valuable lesson.

With Klooigeld, young people are given the opportunity to become more financially responsible through an innovative app and additional activities. A unique learning experience, without the worries of financial consequences.

How does Klooigeld work?

Many young people in the Netherlands have difficulty managing their money. Research shows that one in five young people experience payment problems, which leads to uncertainty and stress. Liz, Lian, Nynke and Robin discovered that young people are given little room to make financial mistakes, although this is an essential part of the learning process. With Klooigeld they wanted to create a virtual, safe and risk-free environment to experiment with money and build financial skills. With the help of Fontys ICT students, the Klooigeld app is now being built. In this app, young people are given the opportunity to earn, spend and save money virtually, and at the same time acquire important skills such as budgeting and managing income.

Remi Rooding, School of Life Programme Coordinator explains the effect this project can have: ‘With their Klooigeld concept, Liz, Lian, Nynke and Robin aim to make young people more aware of their financial choices and to prepare them for future responsibilities. By embracing mistakes, they develop confidence and learn from experiences without the fear of possible consequences. This lays a foundation for financial well-being and a future with less debt. Skills for life!’

Green

Klooigeld is made possible by Fontys ICT students who are responsible for the app’s technical development. To make the concept a real success, additional support is welcome. Do you want to contribute to this inspiring initiative that helps young people become financially stronger? Join Klooigeld and, together with Fontys School of Life, make a difference!

For realistic, appealing use, the app is interactive:

KLOOIPOST makes learning material more tangible and helps you to prepare better for future, real financial scenarios. Users periodically receive ‘Klooipost’ - letters with simulated financial situations such as a payment reminder or credit offer.

KLOOIPAS encourages you to get started with the app and offers step-by-step instructions. Each user receives a personal Klooipas with an activation code, with which they can start the app.

SOCIAL MEDIA actively involves you and keeps Klooigeld top-of-mind. Klooigeld uses TikTok videos to explain the app features and Instagram for updates and reminders.

OUT OF HOM E ADVERTISING emphasises the importance of financial awareness and encourages you to try Klooigeld. Striking visuals are displayed at locations where young people often go, such as shopping centres and stations.

PHYSICAL KL OOISHOP where you can exchange your Klooigeld for second-hand and sponsored items. A pop-up store in a central location, such as Utrecht Central Station, increases the visibility of the concept and attracts interested visitors.

Eindhoven’s cultural landscape

The Eindhoven Cultuurprijs 2024 rewarded initiatives and creators who make a special contribution to Eindhoven’s cultural identity. With this annual award, Cultuur Eindhoven emphasises the value of art and culture for the city and celebrates the vibrant cultural energy. Which creators and initiatives have influenced Eindhoven as a creative city? This year, the awards went to Kelderman & Van Noort, Tarek Beshta and Frino, who, with their unique visions and tireless efforts, add value to the versatility and power of art and culture in our region. They each received an award and a cash prize of €8,000.

The jury, consisting of Iris Penning, Tom Loois, Leontine Heuvelmans, Mark van Rijt and Chair Yasin Torunoglu, praised the winners for their ability to build bridges between disciplines, communities and generations: ‘Their work is innovative and essential for Eindhoven’s identity as a breeding ground for creativity and innovation.’ The assessment considered connection with the city, passion and energy behind the work and the inspiring character of the nominees. For the Incentive Award, the promise of future effect was also considered.

Incentive Award

FRINO

A spoken word and music performance duo (now a collective) that gives voice to stories from the neighborhood with authentic Brabohop and raw musical poetry.

‘Ooh!’ Koen Frijns’ first reaction to winning this prize. ‘You could tell that the jury took it seriously. That’s nice, and rightly so. They only mentioned us at the very last moment, I was sitting there with sweaty hands’, Ruben den Brok continues. ‘The unveiling gave me a cool feeling, great that this happened.’

‘Een‘A boost for the performing arts’

For Frino, Koen Frijns, Ruben den Brok, Director Linda Zijl and a small permanent crew, the Incentive Award came as a big surprise. ‘We have actually only just started,’ says Koen. ‘After our experiment at the Parade, we gave our first performance last summer. That was a success and gave us the confidence to continue in the performing arts.’

With the Incentive Award, they are now making plans for a new performance. ‘It feels like an invitation from the city to produce even more. ‘New work,’ says Ruben, ‘in which we combine humour with musicality. Frino also ensures accessibility to their language productions. ‘We add elements such as subtitles, song lyric booklets and visual storytelling.’

‘For us, the award is an incentive: ‘go ahead, do it’, which gives confidence, freedom and a nice financial buffer. Now something can get moving and continue to roll like a snowball. Maybe there will be new prizes and new collaborations.’ The duo is also seen as ambassadors: ‘We take our city everywhere, and people know this is from Eindhoven. They say: ‘You don’t know what they say, but you know what they mean’.

‘Frino is a promising and unique musical theatre act that, with its idiosyncratic style and authentic sound, is growing into a true ambassador for the city of Eindhoven. As young and autonomous artists, they bring a refreshing and contrary energy to the Dutch music scene with their strong connection to the Eindhoven language. Their theatre is not only fun and energetic, but also of a high artistic level, which sets them apart from other acts. The jury clearly sees that Frino has the potential to break through on a national level. With their drive, they show that they are ready for larger stages. The jury is enthusiastic about what the future holds for them and sees in them a special promise for the city and far beyond.’ Jury report Eindhoven Culture Prize 2024

WINNERS EINDHOVEN CULTUURPRIJS 2024

Organisation Appreciation Individual Appreciation

Kelderman & Van Noort

Masters in transforming industrial spaces into cultural meeting places and exhibitions; bringing art, design and community together with innovative & connecting projects.

For the Kelderman and Van Noort (KEVN) team, the Appreciation Award felt like a reward for years of work. ‘We are a small organisation,’ says Erik Slijpen, founder of KEVN together with Ying Yi Luo, ‘but it is special that our concept of exhibitions, events and catering is seen and appreciated.’

‘Recognition for a dynamic place’

KEVN, recognised as a great place to hang out with graphic and visual art exhibitions (graffiti, ink, street art), is full of versatility. ‘During the day it is a meeting place for residents, in the evening it transforms into a lively club. That mix makes it so much fun.’ With the €8,000 prize money, plans are already in place: projects with artists Helmut Smits and Steven Emanuel, and perhaps an innovative lighting installation for club nights.

‘This prize also means more brand awareness,’ says Erik. ‘We attract new people and celebrate our place in the city.’ For KEVN, the prize feels like a shared victory. Of course, with the other winners, Tarek Beshta and Frino, but also with previous exhibitors, contributors and enthusiasts.

‘KEVN offers a unique and versatile place where art, culture and hospitality come together. With their café, terrace, studios for creators and exhibition space, they know how to create an accessible and inspiring environment for a wide audience, and they play a linking role within the city’s community. The jury praised their inclusive approach and attention to different cultural expressions. The way in which they give young talent and street culture a stage makes them a valuable addition to Eindhoven’s cultural infrastructure.’ Jury report Eindhoven Culture Prize 2024

Tarek Beshta

Creator with effect, pioneer in multi-disciplinary art forms, who unites storytelling, technology and social awareness in groundbreaking projects.

In the guise of a conversation about culture in the city, painter Tarek Beshta was lured to lunch - a surprise, because he turned out to have been nominated for the Individual Appreciation Award. ‘I didn’t see this coming at all,’ he says. ‘Winning felt like a confirmation of my work. I work hard and have chosen my own path; this is recognition from outside.’

‘An unexpected reward’

The prize money will allow Tarek to invest in his art practice, including a publication that was already planned. ‘I recently quit my job to focus entirely on painting. This support comes at the perfect time.’

Tarek understands that the prize opens doors to greater recognition and collaborations: ‘It marks the beginning of a new phase. My studio at Hemelrijken 75 is open to anyone who wants to see my work – feel free to make an appointment.’

‘Tarek Beshta is an intrinsically driven creator, who crafts his art entirely from his own passion and autonomy. The jury appreciates Tarek’s heartfelt approach to art and his focus on the creative process is admirable. Where many artists struggle to bring their work to the attention of the public, Tarek lets his art speak for itself. He shows that sometimes it is precisely that unadorned purity that knows how to touch the public. The jury also experienced this: when they first saw his work, they were deeply moved. These are strong images, with a beautiful, recognisable style, by a qualitatively very strong artist that Eindhoven can be proud of.’ Jury report Eindhoven Culture Prize 2024

Burst your Bubble

And suddenly there he was, a broadly smiling dude in a big electric wheelchair. His father dropped him off. I walked up to him and that’s where the connection with this radiant pearl began. Ajay, 27, encountered Burst your Bubble through a friend. He had been looking for more connection with other people and society for a while and this was a good opportunity for him to expand the circle around him. for the right guidance. ‘I keep chasing my dreams, and above all, keep laughing every day. Life is not a straight line, there are also curves. You just have to follow them.’

I got a lot of positive energy from these events. Because of my disability, I am in an electric wheelchair, a kind of Mercedes, which makes it difficult to meet people my age. At Burst your Bubble, there are many people from different backgrounds, it is interesting and unique to be part of that. Everyone faces different challenges in life, and it is good to exchange experiences about that’. His self-confidence also got a boost: ‘Since I only attended special education, I was not able to create a permanent circle of friends. Because of my disability, I also do not have a permanent job and no clear prospects. By meeting new people, I see again how much I like to interact with others and share my story’.

Ajay’s story is relevant to everyone. ‘I share my educational experiences from my time in special education and try to make people realise how lovely and valuable your time at school can be, and especially how important it is to be as positive as possible in life. My time as a student has certainly not always been easy. That ultimately applies to every student in certain ways. But if you have a positive outlook on life, everything you wish for will eventually come to you.’ Ajay is very ambitious, yet it feels like society is not ready yet.

‘I want to give the young generation a positive mindset’

Look Beyond the Wheelchair, Crutches, Mobility Scooter, White Cane, or Walker Look at the person who uses them. Say: “Good morning,” “Good afternoon,” “How are you?” It starts with the simplicity of making contact. Invite someone to join in. Just as Ajay experiences, there are often physical barriers that make participation impossible. Ask yourself at your next event: Can someone like Ajay actually participate? Is there space for his wheelchair? Can he enter the venue? Where can he, or they, be accommodated? How can we extend the invitation to people who navigate life with the aid of a mobility device? Are we truly accessible—physically, mentally, and emotionally?

With social experiments in the Eindhoven region, Burst your Bubble connects locals and internationals. Eindless collects the stories that materialise from this Together they let you look at the city and its inhabitants in a new way, so that you yourself see opportunities to learn more, make contacts and contribute to an inclusive city where everyone is welcome. Burst your Bubble is a method from the Jump Movement Foundation developed by Ineke Hurkmans. Eindless is a publication from the Uit in Eindhoven Foundation.

Aha! Human effort

Do you know that feeling? You have a topic in mind, something you want to talk about. And then reality overtakes you. That reality becomes so pressing, so intense, that you feel like shouting it from the rooftops. That’s the feeling I have right now.

What I actually wanted to talk about is the “aha” moment. Those moments when you realize that civil servants or others working in the social domain are just people too. And for the most part, they genuinely mean well. But their good intentions don’t always translate into effective outcomes, often because of “the system” or other obstacles people face. That “aha” moment happens when you shift from a complaining mindset to a moment of compassion—and maybe even realize you actually like that rule-enforcer after all.

I like to give you an example. In my neighborhood, a man, a father of two young children, had attached a basketball hoop to a wooden board, which he then mounted on a lamppost. Every evening, just before bedtime, he would play basketball with his boys and other neighborhood kids. He really became a father figure for the community. The initiative was appreciated by the kids and by other parents as well.

Until one day, when it was very windy. At that exact moment, the area coordinator from the municipality happened to walk by and saw the hoop wobbling dangerously. I got a call asking if I knew who had put it up, because it needed to be removed immediately. If anything were to happen, the municipality would be held liable. Nobody wants an accident, of course. The man took down the basketball hoop, and now they had to think of something else to do with the kids.

At moments like that, it’s so easy to fall into familiar complaints. The municipality! Those civil servants! Always making life harder for us!

A few days later, I got another call from the area coordinator. There’s a fund available! She can submit a request to have a basketball hoop installed by the municipality. Aha! There it was, the “aha” moment.

Of course, she means well. Of course, she sees the positive impact it has on a street when an adult takes on a role like this, playing and engaging with neighborhood kids. That’s why she’s willing to brainstorm and find solutions. That’s the humanity you see when someone works within the rules to find where the flexibility is. And that’s when you realize, it’s all human effort in the end.

So, I’ve ended up telling the story I originally wanted to share with you. That other story—the one inspired by what happened after a football match in Amsterdam, I’ll let that settle for now. I’m not sure I can find the right words or tone at this moment to express my pain and frustration in a way that feels manageable. Perhaps by the next time, the pain will have eased. Or perhaps reality will overtake me again. We’ll see.

‘And then comes the realization that in the end, it’s all human effort’

Willem van Hoorn

Willem van Hoorn experienced this principle firsthand when he moved from Delft to Eindhoven in the early 1990s to teach at Fontys University. Initially, he felt out of place; Eindhoven’s modern, industrial landscape was a stark contrast to Delft’s medieval charm. “The cobbled streets and lovely cafés of Delft had me spoilt,” he reminisced. But over time, he and Eindhoven “met halfway,” and he began to uncover the city’s many hidden gems.

Willem, a former nuclear medicine technologist, transitioned into teaching to meet the growing need for university-trained healthcare imaging and radiation therapy professionals. Selected to co-design a diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy educational programme, he became deeply connected to the city’s transformation. Over the next three decades, Willem saw Eindhoven embrace a bold, tech- and design-driven identity rather than emulating historic university towns like Amsterdam and Utrecht.

‘Eindhoven has the courage to focus on its strengths and build for the future’, he notes.’Through the Brainport concept and architectural landmarks like the Blob, Eindhoven positioned itself as a hub of innovation.’ For Willem, it’s this spirit of collaboration and vision that defines Eindhoven’s essence and he encourages everyone to ‘release your inner designer and channel your inner engineer.’

Today, Eindhoven stands proudly self-assured with a reputation reaching far beyond its borders. ‘The message has reached the bigger cities in the West…Eindhoven is a force to be reckoned with,’ Willem reflects. Smiling, he adds, ‘Eindhoven has matured into a city that not only understands its strengths, but proudly shares them with the world.’

For Willem, Eindhoven’s journey has only just begun. With innovation and collaboration embedded in its DNA, the city and region embrace the future confidently, as “the rest of the world watches in awe,” he observes.’

Hoorn

‘You don’t change things by fighting the existing reality. If you want to change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete.’

As a tax specialist at Newtone, you’re working on your future - and that of others.

At Newtone, an advisory and accountancy firm, ESG and sustainability are central to everyday practice. As a tax specialist, your work contributes to a positive future for both people and the planet. How exactly? Jean-Paul Tremio (44), ESG Director, and Cindy van Horne-van de Mortel (28), tax advisor and payroll specialist at Newtone, share their insights.

A New Generation of Tax Specialists

‘The current and upcoming generations of tax specialists view the field differently,’ says Cindy, who studied Tax Economics at Tilburg University and has been with Newtone since 2019. ‘We see a shift in tax advisory toward wanting to be compliant while genuinely contributing to society.’

Jean-Paul, a Tilburg native, spent years as an entrepreneur helping organizations make their operations and business models more sustainable. In January 2024, he joined Newtone as ESG Director. ‘Sustainability is a standard part of your education and feels natural for students and young professionals. As an employer, it makes sense to value it as well. Personally, I want to pass on a beautiful world to my children and future generations. As an advisory and accounting firm, we play a crucial societal role and can make a positive impact.’

Sustainable Business Practices in Tax Consulting

Sustainability goes beyond environmental impact, which is why Newtone reframes it as ‘futureproof business practices.’ Jean-Paul explains: ‘We use the ESG framework to assess the impact, opportunities, and risks of a company’s initiatives on people and the planet. Internally, we focus on minimizing our carbon footprint and supporting sustainable work practices for our team. However, our biggest impact lies in our services, where we help clients achieve their ESG goals through tailored advisory solutions.’

This vision is evident in the daily work of Newtone’s tax specialists, who address both environmental and social factors. Cindy elaborates: ‘As a payroll tax advisor, I help employers design sustainable mobility plans, such as shared car programs, company bikes, or encouraging public transport use. We also advise on inclusive employment terms tailored to different life stages and promote sustainable employability by offering guidance on wellness plans. For example, tax exemptions exist for workplace fitness programs.’

Jean-Paul adds an example involving the workrelated costs scheme (WKR): ‘We’re seeing employers increasingly use their WKR budget

to help employees make their homes more sustainable. This reduces monthly expenses while having a positive environmental impact.’

Making an Impact on a Large Scale

With over 12,000 clients in the Netherlands and beyond, Newtone has a significant reach. ‘As a tax specialist, you can make a real difference,’ Cindy emphasizes. ‘We don’t just help clients stay compliant; we show them how to integrate future-proof practices into their operations. We ensure they make smart choices for both their organizations and their employees. The larger the organization, the greater the impact.’

Jean-Paul agrees: ‘Many entrepreneurs are initially financially driven. But when they see the added benefits of sustainable choices, they often find a deeper motivation. This creates a ripple effect that amplifies your impact as an advisor.’

Multidisciplinary Collaboration at Newtone ‘Unconditional collaboration’ is one of Newtone’s four core values. Close cooperation with various in-house disciplines benefits both clients and colleagues. Cindy’s day often involves teamwork: ‘I regularly work with JeanPaul and colleagues from different areas. For instance, we collaborate with accountants to optimize WKR, and we address international issues around global mobility, looking beyond tax to labor law and permits. Our strong collaboration ensures the right person handles the right task, enabling us to offer clients the best possible advice.’

The Person Behind the Professional Newtone’s other core values include solid expertise, impactful ownership, and personal engagement. According to Jean-Paul, Newtone stands out for its focus on colleagues: ‘You have various opportunities for personal development. This includes becoming the best in your field while also learning practical skills. Our Open-up platform offers additional support in all aspects of (mental) health. Plus, there’s room for fun activities, from social outings to sports events.’

‘There’s also a lot of flexibility in where and when you work,’ Cindy adds. ‘Even as a starter, you’re given responsibility and direct client contact from the start, which accelerates your

learning. You’re well-supported with a solid onboarding process, a buddy system, and open-door access to everyone.’

‘At Newtone, you get both stability and flexibility,’ Jean-Paul summarizes. ‘You’re in control of your career and can make a meaningful impact from day one. As a tax specialist, you can provide significant value to society now and in the future. It’s rewarding to contribute within a large, impactful organization—that’s what you’ll find at Newtone.’

Set the Tone at Newtone

Do you want your work to be meaningful while rapidly advancing your development? Then Newtone is the place for you. You’ll contribute to the tax compliance of organizations while directly influencing their sustainability policies. As Cindy puts it: ‘Here, you can grow, work hard, and enjoy yourself—all while contributing to a better future.’

Christmas Stollen for Christmas

December 24, Christmas Eve, December 25, Christmas Day, December 26, Boxing Day

Christmas is the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Celebrated by Christians worldwide, Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. People put up a Christmas tree, exchange gifts, and enjoy festive meals with family and friends.

Ingredients

500 g flour

7 g dried yeast (1 packet)

75 g sugar

1 tsp salt

250 ml lukewarm milk

75 g melted butter

100 g dried fruit (cranberries, cherries, candied orange peel)

100 g raisins (optionally soaked in orange juice or rum)

100 g almond paste + 50 g chopped almonds

Zest of 1 lemon and 1 orange

1 beaten egg (for glaze)

Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

Combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Add the lukewarm milk and butter. Knead for 10 minutes until a soft dough forms.

Add the raisins, dried fruit, almonds, and citrus zest. Knead until well incorporated. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, until the dough has doubled in size.

Divide the dough into two portions, roll each into an oval shape, and spread the almond paste in the center. For a fresh twist, you can mix a bit of lemon zest into the almond paste.

Fold the dough over the almond paste and press the edges firmly to seal. Shape into stollen and place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Let rise for another 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (356°F). Brush the stollen with the beaten egg and bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.

Cool on a wire rack and generously dust with powdered sugar before serving..
