Hummus layer
A city is not just buildings, roads and landmarks. It is a living organism, a crucible of stories, people and energies. With the newspaper still at its heart, Eindless is a magazine that wants to look under the surface. That digs deeper and exposes the undercurrent, a layer that is rich in tradition, culture and the invisible that truly nourishes us.
In a time when voices scream to be heard and success is measured by image and performance, Eindless wants to focus on what lies beneath. Not the city or region that is praised for its ‘heroes’ and ‘hubs’, but that lives through people who speak their hearts every day and build from a deeper, more fertile layer - a layer that I describe as hummus. This hummus stands for everything that can be found there, for who you find there and for ‘with each other’. For daring to give, without having to be in the foreground. These are the people you will find in Eindless. Their stories show that the true wealth of the city does not lie in power or ego, but in everyday life and the efforts to make it a little better.
If you are inspired by the cultural programme, the stories and projects in this edition, you will discover the unseen wealth of our hummus layer and we can build a city that lives from its deepest roots.

redesign.life Expe rience the new life
Peter-Paul Laumans
We are all facing a few major challenges: the climate crisis, nature conservation, the energy transition. Even though there is a growing urge for change, this is often too slow. One person cannot make a difference. But by working together, joining forces and learning from each other, we can achieve change faster. Peter-Paul is the founder of the redesign. life Foundation, in the middle of the innovative Brainport Eindhoven region. This is where the future is shaped!
Our redesign.mobility programme in the past year was a great success. We set up a national roadshow around sustainable mobility. At major public events in the country, we let people experience the themes of driving, charging and shared mobility. Redesign.life also supports the Green Karting Schools Programme for secondary schools. By having students design and build their own electric kart, we inspire them and their parents to think about sustainable mobility. The choice of technical study programmes and further education is also encouraged, which contributes to tackling the shortage of technical personnel in the labour market.
‘Our non-profit foundation initiates educational and social projects that contribute to awareness of social changes and carries them out. But, instead of focusing on fear or activism, we do this by positively inspiring people and involving them in the transitions. You can encounter the themes of our projects every day. Sustainable mobility, for example, an inclusive labour market and sustainable construction. Together with partners, both public and private, we organize events and activities that introduce people to these topics in an accessible and fun way. We challenge even the most skeptical people to broaden their horizons and be open to the ‘new life’.
The Eindhoven region is booming and that also brings with it additional social challenges. This makes Eindhoven the perfect place for social experiments that we can later roll out throughout the Netherlands. For example, we work together with Burst Your Bubble, an initiative in which local and international residents come together to create sustainable connections. You can read about this on page 22. We will soon organize the first Burst Your Bubble Rally together. In electric cars, participants explore the region, aiming to create sustainable connections that promote social cohesion, understanding and happiness. With 0% emissions and 100% connection, this is an event you don’t want to miss!
And there’s more: Are you also going to Dutch Design Week? We’ll be there as well. At redesign.life, you can experience what ‘new life’ could look like through fun, interactive games. Want to join us and support us in our mission for a better, sustainable future? You’re more than welcome!’

HIP & HAPPENING
Katja Lumme
The first International Climate Mayor of Eindhoven, co-founder of Eindje Groen.
The Green Generation is a new global community of individuals distinguished by their concern, commitment, and passion for environmental sustainability. They care deeply about climate change, pollution, and the conservation of natural resources. And they act accordingly as individuals and citizens of an increasingly global community. Finnish Katja Lumme best represents these values. Her environmental commitments are tangible and very important for the local community.
FILE-ALT AILÉN GAMBERONI IMAGE MAARTEN VAN RIJN
She moved to Eindhoven in 2011 for love, but her connection with The Netherlands started during her design studies internship. Katja has always stood out for its environmental activism; since 2020, she has volunteered at Zero Waste Netherlands. Together with Natascha Holwedel she is cofounder of Eindje Groen, a platform that organizes waste clean-ups in parks and visits to sustainable places in Eindhoven. Here, she shares her wealth of knowledge on sustainability, provides practical advice on how to consume less, and offers broader tips on living a sustainable lifestyle.
How much has your Finnish culture influenced your environmental activities?
‘As a child, I spent my summers in the countryside. The cottage where we stayed was near one of the many lakes in the country, in the middle of nature. From an early age, I experienced what it meant to live without running water and with a compost toilet, eating mainly from the garden. I learned to pick berries and wild mushrooms from my grandmother and my parents. Then, it was customary to learn practical household chores like sewing or cooking at school.’
Out of curiosity, are you in contact with other Finns living there?
‘Actually, no. I know they exist, but we are very, very reserved. I have friends from all cultures and nationalities. A very good one is Finnish and lives in the Netherlands, but there is a community in Eindhoven and throughout the country.’
Returning to the environment, is our city making an effort on the environmental front?
‘There are several initiatives, but only some are known. Since last year, I have become the first international climate major of Eindhoven, a government initiative that encourages people to take action on climate change. As climate mayor, I want to inspire everyone to do their best for the planet. Being sustainable does not cost much and can sometimes even save you money. We also need system change; not all pressure should be on individual actions. I want to inspire people to make a difference and to become a link between climate policy and the international community. Initiatives like going for a walk and cleaning up the parks together are a way to connect with more people and inform them.’
What can a single citizen do for the planet?
‘Many people think that recycling is enough. However, a regular trash audit is vital to going zero waste. After all, how can you minimize waste if you don’t know what you’re throwing away? You may change your habits if you look at your trash and evaluate it. You should consider the total impact; the packaging is just 5% of the problem.
During a sustainability tour in 2022, I created a Sustainability Bingo for students of the Vegan Student Association Eindhove (vsaeindhoven.nl). I explained 25 ways to be more sustainable with simple steps such as avoiding fast fashion, using what you already have, and using as long as you can buy secondhand.
For this reason, I started organizing a Mending Cafe, where I taught how to mend some holes nicely and creatively. It is also lovely to discover environmentally friendly spaces like the Jungle Café. I would love more people to join and learn how to mend their clothes. Please keep an eye on my social network to discover new appointments.’
Are there any other practical ideas that can make a difference?
‘Always look second hand first, if you need to buy something. You can borrow some things from a friend, family, and neighbor. For example, you can rent tools you don’t use that often. Eat seasonally, check ingredients and materials, and avoid plastic. Turn water off while washing or shampooing, use solid soap, eat more plant-based and more vegetables, and buy unpackaged fruit and vegetables as much as possible. Plan meals to prevent food waste because we always buy more than we need: food has a huge impact. It is a choice we all make at least three times a day. Inform yourself and others, vote, write to the government and brands, and sign petitions. Think about the size of your house; could you live in a smaller one? Think about how you travel, if you can, by bike or public transport. Little gestures make a difference.’
How can you be contacted and get your activities calendar?
All our initiatives are on the Instagram page (instagram.com/eindjegroen) and the website (eindjegroen.nl). National Climate Week will take place from November 11th to 17th. Follow us to stay updated about our initiatives.
Is there a Finnish word you would like to teach us?
‘I thought of the word Sisu, which is untranslatable, but that doesn’t stop people from trying: determination, guts, hardiness, courage, and willpower are some terms people use in English.’
‘If you take a look at and evaluate your waste, you can adjust your habits. Think about the total impact: the packaging is only 5% of the problem!’
BOX FINLAND
Finland, a country of a thousand lakes and pristine forests, has a rich vocabulary that reflects people’s love and respect for their environment. For those who love the Finnish language and nature, here are some of the most fascinating terms to know and use.
Metsä means forest, a vital part of the landscape and understood as a place of tranquility and adventure. The term Koski refers to river rapids. Finnish river rapids are famous for kayaking. Järvi describes ‘a lake’ as central to a country with over 180,000 lakes. Last, Luonto means nature, denoting the importance of an integral part of Finnish identity.
‘Everyone can explore and enjoy the beautiful nature. Finns call this freedom Jokaisenoikeudet, or ‘Everman’s “eryman’s Right.” But, as always, rights come with responsibilities. Here, nature is both wild and free. The law allows anyone who visits or lives in the country the freedom to roam the countryside, forage for food and use natural areas for recreational purposes—with respect for nature, of course.
COLUMN MATHILDE
Just do it!
I felt a bit stressed, and it was getting worse. I had just struggled through the theory, of course I had put it off until the last moment. As long as I didn’t get too many questions. I didn’t think I would be able to do much, I expected. In the last class, our coaches Klaas and Jan had spent some extra time on practical matters: making a round, applying strokes, sitting firmly and hands together, not scooping water and setting the pace. Getting in and out had also been practiced; not an easy task when you get a bit older. “What am I doing now”, flashed through my mind. At that moment I heard my name being called. “Mathilde, you can start.” I carefully grabbed the oars. I put my foot on the board and landed on the seat with a thud. Close the rowlocks, push off and go. The oars splashed into the water and my stress was gone. Wonderful, just the rippling sound brought peace! The sun was shining, there was a bit of wind, grebes and ducks made way for me and my boat. I almost forgot that I was taking an exam on this Saturday morning.
The reason I started rowing was a reaction to someone who asked me: “How long has it been since you learned something really new?” It was just after the pandemic, and I put my money where my mouth was to do something I had never done before. Preferably outside. Running and tennis were out of the question – been there, done that. And finishing almost last in a half marathon kept me from ever doing anything with running again. But boats on the canal, I saw them going back and forth every now and then. Suddenly I knew … rowing! I went to the Rowing Club Beatrix website and signed up for the beginner’s course. “Just do it!”, I thought. I wasn’t the only one. About twenty people had registered. The first few times I thought it was impressive that my fellow rowers and I got moving and didn’t tip over when we accelerated on the water. The coaches had the patience of a saint. They cycled enthusiastically along the canal, shouting commands at the wobbly boats. Their enormous dedication and that of other volunteers made me enjoy my new activity more and more. And there was a serious evaluation after the course. I doubted whether I would ever master the technique. But a worry shared is a worry halved, the others also sometimes found it difficult. Learning something new turned out to be a lot of fun. I could concentrate on something completely different and do something outside my comfort zone. That’s called challenging yourself. Sometimes continuing until you can’t go on but creating a great team as a result. Two years ago, we didn’t know each other. Seven women with completely different lives, now friends who share the good and the bad. Quite special.
You learn mainly by doing something frequently and doing it together. Motivational coaches also help of course. You need others to achieve results. And there is a parallel with our language school: we also say to our students who practice their new language: “Just do it!” Persevere and don’t forget to have fun.’ Suddenly the exam was over. I tried to get out of the boat smoothly, but I couldn’t. I made it! That’s what’s so nice about learning something new; you take a step further, are rewarded and celebrate together.

Prins S. en De Geit
Once upon a time... Prins S. en De Geit! This Hague trio combines pop, hip-hop, and upbeat dance beats into infectious and absurdist dance floor fillers like ‘Kinderboerderij’ and ‘Nacht’. Singer Scott Beekhuizen not only delights with their dance moves but also delivers one lyrical highlight after the other. Complete with guitar and 80s synths, which make the whole thing sound like Spinvis on speed. After Rood Staan Hard Gaan (2022), there’s now Partijtje (2024), a dark concept album about partying as a remedy and the world as a celebration.
Chibi Ichigo (Japanese for ‘little strawberry’) already proved during Hit The City that she is someone to keep an eye on. On October 26th, the Limburg-Tatar singer brings her energetic pop with honest lyrics to Effenaar’s Kleine Zaal. Refreshing beats and synths wrapped in a clear message: self-love.
Collignon
We know him from Nobody Beats the Drum, SKIP&DIE, and C-mon & Kypski: keyboardist and producer Jori Collignon. COLLIGNON is his new solo project, which quickly evolved into a full-fledged band with Gino Bombrini (Komodo) on drums and percussion and Yves Lennertz (YĪN YĪN) on guitar. The result? Energetic, uptempo music. A perfect combination of Yves’ wild, exotic melodies and Jori’s distinctive soundscapes. In the summer of 2023, the band made a big impression with their explosive and energetic shows. Tonight, they will take you on a musical road trip at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven.

In October 2024, Ton Koopman turns 80! To add musical lustre to this great milestone, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir presents the oratorio Esther: Händel’s very first English oratorio with which he single-handedly created a new genre. It’s a treasure trove of energetic and passionate music, making it a wonderful choice for Ton Koopman to celebrate his jubilee. He brings along a dream cast including vocal prodigy Julia Lezhneva, making her debut in Muziekgebouw Eindhoven! Esther is a purely musical, full-length oratorio. The piece is performed as a concertante, as was common in Händel’s time.
Stuurbaard Bakkebaard
Stuurbaard Bakkebaard is back! The band from Eindhoven can rightfully be called legendary. For nearly 30 years, this group has been delivering a bizarre mix of wonder, danceability, and experimentation with their albums and live shows. It’s been about two years since the trio last performed in Eindhoven, but now they’re back, armed with new material and an album on the way. SBBB is once again showing why they are undoubtedly the coolest band Eindhoven has ever produced. Don’t miss it at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven!

The result is an organic blend of Arabic and flamenco music, infused with influences from Latin and modern jazz. Trico’s lineup is unique in the Dutch music scene, delivering an exotic sound full of melancholy and energy.
The band recorded their debut album in the summer of 2021 at Wedgeview Studios, with Udo Pannekeet as the engineer. All the tracks are composed by the different band members, yet together they form a cohesive whole thanks to their distinctive sound. This album represents their love for world music and their quest for the perfect fusion of all these influences.

Welcome 2 da Jungle • Marijn van de Beek
Starting from October 5, this exhibition by Marijn van de Beek will open in the gallery space. Together with @ mobieleeenheid, Marijn has created an indoor jungle. The space has been transformed into a realistic jungle with lush greenery and animal inhabitants that stimulate your imagination. From the Eagle to the Silverback Gorilla, from caregiver to shareholder, we are all part of a larger whole. If we don’t stand up for our place in this world, someone else will take our place.
Be tween here and here
Galerie Nasty Alice is pleased to announce Between Here and There, a duo exhibition by Susan de Boer and Bo de Jong. This exhibition features work by two painters in which a form of distance is leading. This distance can be approached on a social and cultyral level, but also in a front and back space, creating different dimensions.
The gallery is closed on: 2-6 October due to Art The Hague and 25 October.
PARKTHEATER EINDHOVEN | YOUTH | THEATER
Children’s Theater Week
From October 20 to 27, 2024, it’s Children’s Theater Week at Parktheater. During the autumn break, the theater aims to delight as many children as possible with a theater visit to show how fun theater can be! Both in front of and behind the scenes, there’s a lot to experience. It’s a packed youth theater program, and we’d love to highlight a few shows:
For the youngest theater visitors, shows like The Gnome Book and The Little Mermaid will be featured. Have you always wanted to know what a gnome’s life is like? Then join the adventure into the magical world of The Gnome Book. Or immerse yourself in the enchanting underwater world of The Little Mermaid.
For older children, the fun continues! They can enjoy Giselle, one of the most famous ballets in the world, reimagined by Toneelmakerij and Dox into a dynamic performance filled with songs, beats, and hip hop. There’s also The 8+ Show, a humorous show about virtually nothing. Even the title ran out of words, but thankfully The 8+ was just enough. Hopefully, that will be enough!
There are boxes you can see and invisible ones. Are you usually the toughest kid in class? Then it’s hard to admit that you’re sometimes scared or sad. Are you the smallest and everyone thinks you’re cute? Then you’re never in charge of the games.
In this rebellious circus theater performance, four acrobats try to break out of their boxes with flips and tricks. In the circus, the strong boys are always at the bottom, and the girls float high in the air. But what if it were the other way around? In Hokje, the acrobats aim to do more than just show their skills. The base man wants to prove he’s more than just a muscle-bound figure, and the quiet girl on top also wants to scream loudly once in a while.
Sam & Julia
Sam & Julia from Het Muizenhuis are back! These two most curious mice in the land will take you on a journey through their adventurous lives.
Julia is new to The Mouse House and soon meets Sam, who shows her the best spots in their home. On the attic of the rag-and-bone shop, they find all sorts of amazing things. They let their imagination run wild and build their own story with everything they encounter. They discover that you can feel at home anywhere when you create something together!
This performance is part of the Picture Book Festival. It offers a magical world for preschoolers and toddlers: two shows, complemented by the beautiful Picture Book City where children can play to their heart’s content.

Manifestations, art tech and fun! ABOUT THE (MIS)MATCHES BETWEEN HUMANS AND TECHNOLOGY
During Dutch Design Week, Manifestations presents for the ninth time promising future artists. This interactive experience reflects new realities through both physical and virtual programs featuring challenging and futuristic work from over fifty artists. It promises to be a confrontational yet disorienting adventure full of future perspectives.
The theme ‘INVISIBILITIES’ explores things that often remain unseen in our society. A well-known example is victim-blaming. Artists will showcase how greed, ignorance, and indifference can lead to inequality and exclusion. The artworks invite you to reflect on issues such as economic disparity, discrimination, and the marginalization of vulnerable groups.
Consider how it seems natural for our elderly to go to a nursing home, or how countries like Ghana might be “happy” with our discarded Western textiles. Such views help us “solve” problems by pushing them out of sight. Additionally, homeless individuals are often relocated to isolated areas, and people with mental health issues are confined to institutions. This can be seen as a modern form of banishment: we isolate people under the guise of safety and order, but essentially, we just don’t want to see them.
And what about the ideas we find uncomfortable—do we banish those as well? Technology makes this easier: we increasingly live in our own bubbles, only seeing what we want to see.

Jong Cultuur Eindhoven, one of the talents:
Real music drive: writing, making & persevering LUUK VEGTER
‘Eighteen years old and good at rapping, writing lyrics and racing simulation’, is how Jeanne van Beers, Director of Switch Jeugdzorg, describes this young talent. Luuk himself is mainly interested in music: ‘As long as I keep the motivation to make music, I will always continue to do so. It is my dream to touch people with my music and share my passion with the world.’
Wie ben je en waar kom je vandaan? Who are you and where are you from? I am Luuk Vegter. Born in Almere in 2006, raised in Maarheeze and now living in Weert. Generation Z is known as digitally skilled, socially aware and resilient. Which word suits you best? Digitally skilled. I spend a lot of time on my laptop and phone, and all the texts I write are on my phone. I watch a lot of videos on YouTube and often play games on consoles. What do you do? Four days a week I go to Switch Jeugdzorg in Eindhoven. To write lyrics for my rap music, record demos or play a game. Sometimes I can be found in the creative room, or I go for coffee with a supervisor in the city center.
What drives you as an artist? When I am busy with something, it motivates me. I have a strong perseverance mentality. As a person, my biggest motivations are my girlfriend, a good friend and coach Ricardo, the happiest and nicest person I have ever met.
Where do you get your inspiration from? I like to listen to Eminem, one of the best in the rap industry. His music gives me the drive to write equally good lyrics myself. Eminem’s passion and perseverance inspire me enormously, I also try to incorporate that into my own music. Beating ‘the best ever’ is difficult, but I think you should try and have that mentality. What can we expect from you? I am working towards a life in which I can make music and perform a lot. Later I would like to tour Europe, not only for music, but also to make wonderful memories with friends or my girlfriend. If I really make it in music, I would like to do monthly shows throughout the Netherlands and Belgium.

Burst your Bubble
The story of collateral beauty: how being seen, heard and acknowledged leads to self-confidence and a job!
Ineke Hurkmans, founder Jump Movement asks Alma to tell her story: ‘During my first Burst your Bubble session, I was surprised how expats and locals were so welcome, and could connect on a deep level. Despite our different backgrounds, our conversation topics were similar, and we shared the same feelings and concerns about the most important things in life. Later, I got the chance to join the team, which strengthened my self-confidence and competences. The experience of working together on the integration of newcomers, like me, was amazing, especially because I sometimes felt lost and isolated. Getting to know people from the Netherlands who open this space turned out to be important. Even when no one knew me, I was trusted in my capacity to connect with others, to share with others, to support others. This was the most valuable thing about being part of the Burst your Bubble team. It especially helped me feel that I can trust my future here.’

it yourself.
As Alma experienced, seeing, hearing and acknowledging are essential for a sense of safety and relaxation. One of the most important conditions for doing this is to postpone your judgement and keep looking at what happens then. Postponing your judgement is not easy, simply because everyone has an opinion about something, or sometimes ‘knows better’ (or thinks they know). So: postpone your judgement for a while towards yourself and others. Don’t think anything about it for a while. Look at yourself, give yourself space and experience what that does. And then do it to someone in your environment and keep looking again. It will surprise you! Collateral beauty can easily emerge from it.
Burst your Bubble works with a diverse team in which everyone can contribute, with a focus on self-organisation, simplicity and self-empowerment. This helped Alma Flores from Mexico to take a career step to Trade Compliance Specialist at Fluke with more self-confidence.

Learning life skills for a happy life
Have
you ever
wondered: ‘Why didn’t we learn this at school?’ Fontys fully understands that. The task of education is to prepare young people for society.
But what does that entail? Fontys School of Life believes that life skills, just like knowledge and professional skills, are essential for a happy & successful life.
The world is changing rapidly and therefore more and more skills are needed to be successful. Fontys School of Life is an innovative initiative from Fontys Pulsed, aimed at developing practical life skills that go beyond traditional books and classrooms.
‘We focus on inspiring and cool initiatives to make an impact and develop life skills in the field of the 17 sustainable development goals. Our mission? To create a positive social impact within the Fontys employee and student community and the population groups in the cities where Fontys is active. What we encourage: learning. At all ages and in all roles. This means that teachers, students and other stakeholders can participate in and contribute to our initiatives. Learning and growing together is central and taking action is also important.’

Christine Caviquiolo
In light of ongoing conversations about gender parity, invisible violence, and the underrepresentation of women, particularly in technology, it is timely to explore these issues in a diverse city like Eindhoven - a melting pot of cultures and feminist perspectives from around the world. Ankita Mukherjee discusses the social construction of gender with Christine Caviquiolo, a social designer from Brazil who lives in Eindhoven.

The belief that gender is hardwired into our bodies and minds still dominates many societies. Men are often drawn to technology and sports, while women are steered toward domestic roles and non-technical professions. Christine grew up with this mindset until her studies in gender theory challenged it, offering her a new way to see the world. This shift was unsettling at first, but it exposed the injustices and hidden forms of violence that shape our social structures.
Emotional and care-based labour is frequently seen as an inherently feminine domain.
‘Women are often pushed into nurturing roles, whether it’s nursing, working in animal shelters, or environmental care,’ Christine points out. These ingrained gender roles have influenced Christine’s own journey, especially as she relocated and navigated her career. After moving to Europe with her partner, who works in tech and became the primary income earner, Christine faced the task of redefining her own professional path. Once an academic researcher focused on the social and historical aspects of technology, she now taps into creative processes and design to build multicultural connections and foster a sense of belonging.
In Eindhoven, Christine sought out people and communities to connect with. She found groups of women trying to balance their careers while carrying the weight of caregiving responsibilities. These women, she notes, operate on the margins - far from the male-dominated tech industry. Yet, Christine sees strength in these spaces. ‘Even though they’re not part of the technological core, these spaces are adaptable and bring essential humanistic perspectives that drive progress and foster innovation,’ she says. Marginalised voices like theirs push back against the status quo, paving the way for a more inclusive and future-ready city.
‘One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman’
Simone de Beauvoir, De Tweede Sekse
‘No
biological, psychological, or economic destiny defines the figure that the human female represents in society; it is civilization as a whole that produces this intermediary product between male and eunuch which is called feminine.’
