Welcome to Eindhoven Airport
The gateway to the Brainport region. With direct connections to the Brainport region. With direct connections to and from destinations such as London, Alicante and Budapest, the airport brings people closer together for holidays, work, family visits. What remains is that very first impression: the airport welcomes passengers with an organised service, good connections and Brabant hospitality. This is where your journey begins. Are you coming?
‘Meeting locals and chatting about football’
Arrival from London
Aaron Bagley
Age 42
• Nationality British
A true Liverpool fan arrives with his son Awen. They are visibly enthusiastic and are really looking forward to it. ‘Tonight, we are going to the Champions League match between Liverpool and PSV, we have tickets. Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo are my favourite players, and the fact that Gakpo is from Eindhoven makes this trip extra special.’ ‘I have found out what we can discover’, says Aaron. ‘We left England early to visit the Catharinakerk in Eindhoven and walk through the city.’ Aaron is really looking forward to this. Awen, on the other hand, has a different wish. He wants to meet locals, have a beer at the Markt and talk about football. They can’t wait to start their adventure!
Aaron (42) and Awen (19) are father and son and come from Dorset, England. They work as road worker and driver.
Direct connections, close to home
‘Lots of creativity and technology during DDW’
Departure to Milan
Isabella Lucchese
Age 24 • Nationality Italian
‘I have just finished my studies and internship. I come here regularly to visit the city, visit friends and of course for the Dutch Design Week (DDW). Most people I meet here are technical. The city is new and therefore a bit cold. That is different during DDW, then the city shines. There is a lot of creativity and technology to admire during this week. I really appreciate that. I also lived in Milan for a few years and often visited the Design Week there. The biggest difference I experience is that in Eindhoven designs are often practical and in Milan they are more aesthetic. Both are inspiring; Eindhoven really has a unique mix of innovation and functionality.’
Isabella has just graduated from Delft University and is now starting her new job as an Engineer in Switzerland.
Eindhoven Airport has 7 million passengers per year, which is an average of more than 18,000 arriving and departing people every day. 53% of them travel on a holiday or city trip, 33% visit family and/or friends and 14% make a business trip. No matter how short their visit, the airport strengthens the growth of the region to settling, for living and working, and in economic terms.

Rosa van den
den Nieuwenhof
Rosa van den Nieuwenhof, an Eindhoven city councilor for the Labour Party, has deep roots in the city. Her family history goes back to the 16th century. On a rare sunny winter morning, upstairs in Eindhoven City Hall, Rosa shares her thoughts on the challenges and opportunities of the growing city, her path to politics, and her efforts to create a more inclusive and transparent system.
‘The true test of our character is not what we do when things are easy, but how we act when times are tough. By creating opportunities for others, we show the world who we really are.’
Barack Obama
Rosa lives by a principle that has shaped her political path since the beginning: the true measure of character is creating opportunities for others. Born and raised in Eindhoven, she sees the city as a village and an international hub; a place that is constantly in motion and where conviviality and the pressure of growth go hand in hand. ‘The key is to find balance,’ says Rosa. ‘Maintaining the sense of community, namely that people know each other and care for each other, and at the same time embracing the opportunities and diversity that growth brings.’ Rosa aspires to make the success of the Brainport region accessible to everyone, and for every resident to feel a full participant in the development of the city. ‘The success of Brainport must be shared. Especially with those who are still on the sidelines,’ she says. Rosa managed to get the social Pakt Woensel Zuid to focus on youth and now invest in the future of children, especially those from vulnerable backgrounds. An achievement she is proud of. ‘Investing in children early is the key to lasting change,’ she emphasizes. ‘It is precisely by investing ‘unequally’ that you create equality and can guarantee equal opportunities for everyone.’
Rosa learned how to navigate the complex political system without compromising her values. ‘Politics is a two-way street. By wanting to change it, I gained a broader perspective,’ she says. ‘I now have more insight into procedures and bureaucracy and know how long it takes to implement change. But I continue to resist traditional systems of exclusion and inequality.’ Rosa’s political path is not about following conventional norms, but about challenging existing structures. She wants to create space for authentic leadership and wants to strengthen connections. So, no sowing division. Idealistically and pragmatically, she shows how politics can really be different: one conversation, one connection, one decision at a time.
A SLICE OF LIFE
Ambitious programme for all
Since 2024, Eindhoven has a new cultural programme for and by young people aged 14 to 27, and those just outside that age group: Young Culture Eindhoven. Six weekends full of cultural activities and an ongoing programme with workshops and meetings. The young people are participants and have an active role in devising and implementing initiatives. Young Culture is a programme by the Cultuur Eindhoven Foundation. Director-manager Tanja Mlaker asked project leader Mariëtte Vetter to bring everything together, coordinate the programme and organise communication. With the last weekend approaching at the end of March, Tanja and Mariëtte take a moment to reflect on their experiences.
No fewer than nineteen partners participate in Jong Cultuur Eindhoven. This includes cultural organisations such as Muziekgebouw Eindhoven and Van Abbemuseum, individual makers such as Denvis and Hildegard Hick, and partners from the social sphere such as Switch Jeugdzorg, Pitstop Jongerencentrum and Eindhoven Maatjes. Such a broad composition immediately provides a rich basis and breeding ground for exchanging ideas and experiences, and the parties play an important role in reaching target groups. How do you create an atmosphere that is inclusive, and where everyone feels welcome and safe? Where can you come and have a look around, for free? Because all activities are representatively divided across many disciplines and are free, experienced culture lovers and newcomers are encouraged to participate and discover their creative talents or find cultural depth.
What was the impetus and what did you hope to achieve with it?
Tanja Mlaker: ‘Actually, even during the pandemic, before additional resources became available nationwide, there was a general feeling of discomfort and unease among young people. That got us thinking. We wanted to do more than just offer support packages. How could we put those who are in a crucial phase of their development in the lead and help them get moving again?’
Mariëtte Vetter: ‘Encouraging young people to develop their own initiatives and at the same time offering them a safe and inclusive space became the starting point of our programme. We not only wanted to stimulate creativity and culture, but also to enable spontaneous encounters and connections between young people.’
Tanja: ‘The clear dividing line between 18- and 18+ when going out made it difficult to organise activities that appeal to everyone. Still, we wanted everyone to feel welcome, regardless of age, background or situation. The input from a Youth Council and a student advisory group gave us valuable insights.’
Young people aged 14 to 27, that covers a broad target group. Some activities mainly attract 20-somethings, others younger participants. Is it too ambitious to want to appeal to all young people?
Mariëtte: ‘We called on organisations and young people: ‘What do you have to offer?’ We wanted to set up a flexible and structured programme, with room for spontaneous ideas and opportunities to promote cross-pollination and collaboration. The partners each worked on their own activities, we supported them through overarching communication and marketing, such as a website, toolkits and joint social media efforts. With nineteen participants, including Denvis, but also Foundation We Are and Tante Netty, a wonderfully diverse collective emerged.’
Tanja: ‘That collective is really the strength of the programme. The organizations were able to mobilize their supporters well and stimulated young people to explore their creativity with workshops and activities. This put them in charge and provided many learning experiences. They determined the content; we helped with coordination.’
Mariëtte: ‘We also had challenges. Reaching young people is a challenge, because they are in their own social media bubbles and often do not read the newspaper. In addition, you cannot include young people under the age of 18 in social media advertisements and TikTok, for example, may
For the new youth culture platform Jong Cultuur Eindhoven, Eindless Magzine interviewed young talents in recent months who are in some way connected to the program: from left to right Nicolas Diaz, Nori Xhofleer, Lena Claessen, Luuk Vegter and Lioba Benold. See also cover and page 14.

young people
not be used by every organization. And of a different nature: how do you reach young people who can tolerate less stimuli or have a different background? We tried to include everyone. Small-scale initiatives such as workshops with language & poetry are not yet for the general public, but they do give young people a platform.’
Tanja: ‘And communication was important. Many young people are difficult to reach through regular channels. WhatsApp groups, for example via Pitstop, and a personal approach work better. There must be a balance between impulsiveness and commitment. You have to be able to participate spontaneously, but you have to commit to something.
So, you let young people be the programmer?
Tanja: ‘We discovered how important it is to really let programmes be determined by and for young people. Everyone brought something personal, and that’s how the workshops making Tik Tok videos, live jazz try-out in Muziekgebouw, Bacchanalia party in the Van Abbemuseum and language and spoken word sessions came about. Very diverse and very special.” Mariëtte: ‘The co-production ‘Work it!’ by RaRaRadio, Muziekgebouw, Denvis, Switch Jeugdzorg and Pitstop and creative projects by Keukericonfessies and Foundation We Are inspired young people, and we reached a wide audience with it. Young At Night, Schrijverskamp and expo at DEMO Eindhoven also turned out to be highlights. Young people were given a stage and the chance to learn and grow. That sticks.
Tanja: ‘Because it is common for young people to choose what they already know, being able to participate without obligation and discovering new things are prerequisites. That requires a broad and accessible programme. Don’t just put DJs or graffiti on the menu, but also jazz or classical music. Thanks to that variation, young people are challenged to step outside their comfort zone.
How do you see the future? Can we conclude that Jong Cultuur is a success?
Mariette: ‘The results have clearly been defined. The partners have gained experience and made connections that will continue. Collaborations have been created that may continue and new programmes are being developed. The success was in breadth and depth. From spoken word sessions to live performances, from workshops to large events.’
Tanja: ‘We will officially conclude the programme in March and then it is of course important to evaluate. What have we achieved? What foundation has been laid? And what is the next step? We can already see that there is a need for culture and creativity among young people. Thanks to the mutual exchange, there was a great learning effect. It requires an equal approach, and if you offer that, wonderful initiatives will emerge.’
Mariëtte: ‘The collaboration between organizations and young people was great. Jong Cultuur Eindhoven has shown how powerful a collective can be. The balance between creativity, flexibility and inclusivity is successful and there are many opportunities for a follow-up. Letting young people hear their voices more in the future. That is something we can build on.’
‘Creativity and culture flourish when you find a form and structure that leaves room for spontaneity’
JONG CULTUUR EINDHOVEN offers a dynamic platform where young people can experiment, learn and collaborate. Thanks to the synergy between cultural and social organisations, an inspiring programme is created that matches their needs and interests. This not only strengthens the cultural sector, but also social cohesion in Eindhoven. This creates a solid foundation for an inclusive future in which young people and culture continue to inspire each other.

COLUMN MATHILDE
Thirty years
Our language school has been around for thirty years this year, and for me that means a trip back in time. I can still see myself sitting there during my job interview. ‘Study Centre for Languages is looking for an experienced English language trainer’. I knew this was my chance. How happy I was when I was hired! I was eager to get started, even though the salary left much to be desired. How coincidental it was that my first assignment turned out to be at Philips Nederland on Bosdijk. Our language school was founded by Philips and, like many other organisations in Brainport, we are a branch on the Philips tree. The building seemed like an almost impregnable fortress with so many corridors and doors that I was already late for my first lesson. It became the beginning of thousands of encounters with students. While in the first years as an English teacher I encountered many Dutch people who wanted to improve their English and, as my career progressed, I met more and more people who were going to learn Dutch. They came from all over the world. Looking back, I can still see many students in my mind, each with their own story. From so many things I have retained something or learned something.
I think of the director who wanted to perfect his English, despite his busy schedule. He was the only student of mine who completed all the e-learning modules ‘just setting the alarm on Saturday morning’. His perseverance has always inspired me. And then Luis from Venezuela who I recently met again by chance. Such a warm greeting. It was during his lesson that my mother called me completely unexpectedly to tell me that she was terminally ill. I have never forgotten his sympathetic reaction. I also think back to the student who almost did not dare to speak and cancelled her intake twice, but who eventually took the step to practice speaking English. I felt just as proud as she did when she received her certificate. Or the well-known architect with whom I had inspiring conversations while I prepared him for a tough exam. And of course, Ahmad from Syria. In 2015 he was one of the very first refugees from that region to come to us. ‘Where there’s a will, there’s a way’ could have been his middle name. I have rarely met someone who remained so positive, despite all the obstacles in his path. Doors closed, but Ahmad kept knocking - literally and figuratively, often armed with a red rose. I did explain to him that a red rose has a different meaning here than in Syria. Together with Brazilian José, who offered for Ahmad to join him in his private lessons, the three of us enjoyed the Saturday mornings with deep conversations, with laughter and tears. The lessons never felt like work, but like a special time together. What also made me very happy were ‘our’ Ukrainian students who are learning Dutch through the municipality. The gratitude sometimes felt almost uncomfortable. One of the students cleaned offices before lessons and came running into our building, neatly dressed, just in time for her lessons. At Christmas she spoiled me with flowers and chocolate. And then Pouriya, the Paralympian from Iran. He left everything behind, started from scratch and continued with admirable determination. He recently came by again to Aalsterweg. ‘I have a surprise for you’, he said laughing. I carefully took his homemade gift; a beautiful, framed wood carving appeared and to my great joy my favourite animal, a cat, was depicted on it! So many students have walked into my life. Some stayed, others continued their path. But each one of them has given me something: warmth, openness, trust. Thirty years of the language school is much more than an anniversary for me. It is a reminder of all the students who have enriched my world. And that is perhaps the best gift of all.

For her concert at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, she is in good hands: Sir Mark Elder has conducted in all the great opera houses and knows better than anyone how to make great singers shine. Since 2022, he has been the Principal Guest Conductor of the renowned Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the oldest orchestras in the world.

Ideas – an unmasked ball
How do you make mental health a topic of discussion and how does art play a role in care and daily life? This question is central to this event. During the unmasked ball, artists, healthcare professionals and experts by experience will take off their masks and engage in open conversation.
The program consists of various lectures and live music. There is also room for meeting and conversation. You can register via cke.nl/denkbeelden.
The unmasked ball is part of the exhibition DENKBEELDEN –portretten van de geest.
The art project is a collaboration between GGzE and CKE.
Studio Beun
Studio Beun (Jelle, Moos, Roel and Seth), a collective of friendly makers, will be exhibiting at CKE. Within Beun, everyone has their own creative approach. Their common thought process is: ‘Just do it’. Together they look for solutions with everything around them and what is already there.
The work varies from experimental installations to innovative designs. All by using everyday materials in surprising ways. The exhibition is a glimpse into their joint and individual projects and a nice mix between traditional art forms and experimental challenges.
On Saturday 28 February there will be a free workshop from 19:00 to 21:30.
Effervescent weekend
This is a weekend full of (amateur) art and creativity. Friday is band night in Café C. Saturday and Sunday you will go on a creative discovery tour through CKE. You will enjoy performances in the concert hall or participate in creative workshops. Check cke.nl for the program.
This is also the last weekend of the exhibition DENKBEELDEN - In this exhibition, more than 250 people provide a visual answer to the question: ‘What does your inner world look like?’. It is an impressive collection of very personal work that makes everything that is normally invisible visible.
Everyone is welcome!

Homeless people, invisible in our society
The representation of a homeless person, an unkempt man sleeping on a bench in a park, has long since ceased to be true. Causes are not always addiction or psychological problems. Housing shortage, youth care that stops at the age of eighteen, illegal stay, losing your job, debts, being thrown out of your home are the causes of today. It can happen to anyone.
In collaboration with Het Beelddepot, Het Bouwdepot and Springplank - Stop the silence.
Sensing Otherness / Navigating the more-than-human world
It explores how we can understand and communicate with more-than-human worlds. Our senses, augmented by technology such as sensors and AI, help unlock the hidden languages of animals, plants, and ecosystems. While humans long believed that language made them unique, science and art are now revealing complex communication systems in nature. At MU, artists and scientists explore these interactions together, bringing together ancient mythological knowledge and advanced technology. From deep oceans to vast landscapes, we are increasingly listening to the life around us. At the same time, we are becoming more aware of the impact that humans have on Earth.
Fast Life
The Fast Life exhibition is about the speed and hectic pace of modern life. The artists show how this fast-paced world affects us. With a fresh and energetic style, they invite you to pause and think about this hustle and bustle.
In March, the makers will work together in a short, intensive period to create art that fits the theme perfectly: dynamic, direct and full of energy. Fast Life promises to be an exhibition that perfectly captures the speed of our time!
With work by Stijn van Leest, Jimmy Bloksma, Joep van Linder, Jan Tegelaers, Sem B., Bryan Stoel, Rick O., Rutger Broekman, Jasper Briks, Luca Claessens and Sebastian. Opening: fr 21 March 17:00 t/m 00:00. Open: 22 & 23 March: 12:00 – 17:00

Sander Mulder U-tube candle holder
Out of necessity or for the sake of coziness: having candles in the house is always a good idea. A used wine bottle is really no longer acceptable, but they have to go somewhere. This ‘U-tube candle holder’ is a real eye-catcher in the house. Tough, strong, timeless. The hard material is a beautiful contrast with the soft candlelight. Where do you put it? Preferably on the table, if necessary, on the windowsill. Due to the shape; the wide space between the candles, this candle holder never gets in the way of a good conversation.
Sander Mulder started his own business after the Design Academy Eindhoven. With his international design studio, he specializes in furniture, lighting and interior design. His products can be seen in houses, galleries and museums all over the world.

On the Sunny Side
Peaky Blinders-style vintage. That whole burlesque swing dance vibe of old skool jazzy sexyness. Or those summer tweed rides with oldfashioned bicycles and everyone taking a ride together, in style. That sounds fun! Fashion designer & artist Sunny van Zijst makes clothing in the style of the 20s, 30s and 40s. Textiles have always fascinated her. Her love for vintage and jazz started when she was very young. She played in a Big Band, studied theatre design in Tilburg, a master’s degree in Utrecht and worked as an artist for almost 20 years.
A few years ago, she started her own fashion label On The Sunny Side and studio Tweed Revolution. A creative jack-of-all-trades, she does all sorts of things, such as organising events, hosting courses, lectures and a tailor’s café.

Everyday real
I supported several ladies from the neighbourhood in organising a cooking workshop. They were already a working group in a neighbourhood where they had organised some activities. When they found out that we have a facility in the neighbourhood with a large cooking island, the link to food and connection was easily made. A Moroccan cooking workshop for neighbourhood residents, that’s what they wanted to organise. No sooner said than done!
It was a fantastic evening. Different cultural backgrounds, delicious food and great conversations. Until a woman told me that she had seen the documentary about Muslims that is on TV. I knew immediately: here we go again... That documentary influences my life, because I have to answer questions about it all the time. People make comments with the expectation that I will respond to them and confirm or refute something. Even though that is of course done out of interest, and we get to know each other better, it keeps gnawing at me somewhere. It affects me, I feel bewildered and sad. In the end, we are all people, right? Yes, I wear a headscarf and yes, I pray five times a day. But are these really things that deprive me of my humanity? Are these the things that prevent people who are not Muslim from associating with me? I asked the woman: ‘What makes you curious about that documentary, when you have me and other Muslims in your environment, with whom you interact and have conversations? Why is a documentary needed to understand something about me?
Basically, what I want to ask is: What does it take to be seen as equals, with humanity as the common denominator?
When I was asked to become a columnist for Eindless, I hesitated. I was afraid that I would end up in stories about the ‘everyday’. Now I feel the need to talk about the ‘everyday’. Like about an argument with my teenage daughter, because she didn’t do her chores. Or about finding a chocolate wrapper in my son’s left trouser pocket while sorting the laundry. When I asked him about it, he firmly denied it, while looking at me with his big brown eyes. This while it was both his trousers, and he is my only lefthanded son. There I was as a mother, with a fake serious face, while I found the situation and his reaction very funny.
The documentary maker indicated that he finally wanted to show ‘the real story’ about Muslims. That makes me think: What is my story worth? Isn’t that just as much the real story? And of all those other Muslims who are neighbours, residents, colleagues? Isn’t their story also the real story?
‘In the end, we are all human. We have hopes and dreams and moments of joy’
In the end, we are all human. We have everyday worries, with fears and sadness. We have hopes and dreams and moments of joy like everyone else. But apparently, I am not yet ‘everyday’. As long as there are debates about me and people like me, research is done on us and notions are submitted about us and as long as people think that a documentary also tells my story.
‘In the end, we are all human. We have hopes and dreams and moments of joy’

BETWEEN CULTURES: TURKEY
Bread memories Zeynep Turhan
Bread carries memories, symbolic values and traditions that go beyond nourishing the body. It also nourishes the spirit. That is the special thing about bread. It is both food and a sign. The new artisan bakery Sourmate is a gift that is part of the hustle and bustle of Celsiusplein. The story of owner Zeynep Turhan begins in Ankara, Türkiye, where she was born, raised and educated.
FILE-ALT AILÉN GAMBERONI
Creativity has always been central to my life, both professionally and personally. From a young age, I have enjoyed cooking and expressing my creativity in the kitchen. Since a child, I have had a deep love for bread. I would spend the whole day at my grandmother’s house watching her bake bread and enjoy the delicious results. Passionate about the culinary arts, I took the opportunity to attend the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu cooking school in London. Later, I gained experience in various restaurants and further expanded my skills. This journey of discovery took a turn when my family and I moved to Eindhoven. We have lived here for seven years now and love it.’
rom interior designer to culinary artist – how did that happen?
‘After years of working in interior design, I felt mentally exhausted and was looking for a more fulfilling path. Cooking has always been my true passion. When bread baking became a global phenomenon at the beginning of the pandemic, I couldn’t help but delve deeper into it. During a time of isolation and uncertainty, baking offered me a therapeutic escape. It allowed me to express my creativity and find relief from the stress of everyday life. What started as a soothing hobby quickly grew into a passion. My mother sparked my love for baking bread. We would compete to see who could bake the best bread, and with her constant support and encouragement, I turned it into my profession. Thanks to her, I now enjoy sharing my baking creations and inspiring others with my work. Of course, I named my sourdough starter after my mother: Peri, which means ‘Angel’. I still work with that same starter today. Over time, everything grew, mostly thanks to the support of my friends, inspiring female entrepreneurs and my loyal customers who fell in love with my bread. Their appreciation and enthusiasm have shaped my journey into what it is today.’
How do you like Edisonstraat?
‘When I first walked around here, I was blown away by the vibrant diversity of the street. It’s a melting pot of people from all walks of life, ages, professions and perspectives, and I fell in love with it right away. The support from my local customers has been amazing. They are happy to have a place in the neighbourhood where they can buy quality bread and pastries. Their enthusiasm and loyalty is incredibly encouraging. I hope my business continues to grow and that I can be a part of this wonderful community for many years to come.’
What do you think of the Celsiusplein redevelopment project?
‘I am enthusiastic, especially because several friends are opening new shops there. Similar improvements would significantly enhance the image of the neighbourhood and contribute to its renewal. Edisonstraat is close to the city centre, but unfortunately small businesses here do not always get the attention they deserve. The redevelopment will probably attract more pedestrians and increase dynamism, so that businesses can flourish. It is important that small businesses can continue to operate during construction work. Only by keeping road closures to a minimum can businesses and residents be prevented from experiencing too much inconvenience. I hope that the municipality will approach this project with the necessary care and attention, so that the balance between growth and community well-being is maintained. Ultimately, I think that the renovation will have a positive effect on the image and economic vitality of the area, while preserving the community spirit that makes Edisonstraat so unique.’
Future plans?
‘Although I’ve only been open for four months, I’m very excited about future developments. I’d like to renovate the porch soon, expand my menu and create a communal seating area where locals and passers-by can gather. I’d also like to collaborate with other entrepreneurs to get my bread onto restaurants and cafes’ tables, so that a wider audience can enjoy high-quality, healthy and artisanal bread.’
In Christian tradition, bread symbolises rebirth. After being sown, the grain remains underground for months as if dead, and then it sprouts and turns into an ear that produces many new grains. Do you agree?
‘Many customers tell me how bread brings back memories of their childhood, reminding them of their grandparents’ old bakeries or of meals they shared with their families. These stories mean a lot to me, because they connect seamlessly with the essence I want to convey in my work. I incorporated a feminine symbol into my logo to emphasise the connection between bread, the earth, motherhood and nature. Wheat, born of the earth, nourishes and sustains us and has brought people together around the same table throughout the ages. Bread is more than just food; it is a fundamental element that sustains and unites communities.’

BREAD AS SYMBOL
‘In ancient Egypt, bread was not only a daily staple but also offered to the gods in rituals. In Greece, bread was associated with Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, symbolizing harvest and abundance. In Jewish traditions, challah is central to Shabbat and festive meals, while across Europe, bread has long been a key part of seasonal festivals, from harvest loaves to Christmas stollen. In Türkiye, bread is symbolized as sharing. In India, it is used in religious ceremonies and shared as a form of unity. From Native American cornbread to the baguettes of France, bread connects people across generations and is celebrated worldwide as more than just food— it’s a unifying symbol of life and togetherness. Just like human DNA, every sourdough starter is entirely unique, with its own distinct characteristics—its colour, smell, texture, density, and acidity, making no two starters the same. This individuality reminds me of people, each one special and irreplaceable. It is not just food; it is a symbol of identity, tradition, and connection, cherished in every corner of the globe. But yes, for me personally, it was a rebirth.

FONTYS SCHOOL OF LIFE
Pop-up Kitchen
Cooking, learning & connecting together
Since 2023, the Fontys School of Life has had the Pop-up Kitchen project, where students, seniors, entrepreneurs and healthcare professionals cook together, exchange knowledge and learn about healthy food and sustainability. Social challenges such as rising food prices, food waste and social isolation are central.
By using cooking and eating as a connecting tool, students create a platform where various target groups learn to cook healthy, sustainable and affordable food. The project ends in 2025.
The Pop-up Kitchen takes place at various locations, such as school campuses, healthcare institutions and companies. After Challenge Week 040 where 75 students worked together on innovative food concepts and ‘Anne & Max’: Cooking with residual products from the catering industry in 2023, the focus in 2024 was on the protein transition with Vegan Cooking. First, the foundation was laid with students, teachers and external partners under the theme ‘Campus of the Future’. Subsequently, the concept was tested through pilots and a community of involved participants was built. This contributes to physical and mental health and strengthens social cohesion.
Last month, February, was all about cooking together with healthcare institutions and food producers, under the name Cook to Connect for Society. The project ties in with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and focuses on responsible consumption and good health. By using residual flows, using energy-efficient technologies and cooking consciously, the Pop-up Kitchen stimulates circular economies and sustainable thinking. Through collaboration with companies and institutions, the Pop-up Kitchen concept is further scaled up and made more sustainable.
WOMEN COMMUNITY
The
Sleepover
Winter cycling adventure for women
A special cycling event took place at the end of January: The Sleepover. Iris Slappendel (former professional cyclist & founder of cycling clothing and outdoor label IRIS), Elske van der Putten (HeyHeydeHaas, Nonmerci) and Petra Vroomen (Off the Map), brought together thirty women for a challenging ride through the Belgian Ardennes. The Sleepover is more than a bike ride; it is a community building adventure where sports, adventure and mutual inspiration come together.
Na haar professionele wielercarrière sloeg voormalig Nederlands kampioen
Following her professional cycling career, former Dutch champion Iris Slappendel took a new path and founded her label IRIS. In 2021, she asked HeyHeydeHaas to create a design for the non-profit project ‘Super Future Females’, with intended proceeds for ‘The Cyclists Alliance’, which strives for equal pay and media attention for professional female cyclists. Iris’s activism and originality resonated with Elske van der Putten and a sustainable collaboration was born. In 2024, they organised the Cheer Squad; a non-profit community building event, aimed at focusing more attention on the Tour de France Femmes 2024 and outdoor activities for women. The Cheer Squad was widely picked up by (international) media and there will be a sequel in 2025. Their collaboration also resulted in the cycling event The Sleepover.
Elske: ‘Sometimes you just need that one push to get things going. With The Sleepover we are building a community in which women support and
‘By cooking together, the Pop-up Kitchen shows that a healthy and sustainable future starts with sharing a meal. The ambition is to expand locally and internationally and to enter partnerships with new target groups. The concept offers an innovative and practical solution for social issues in the field of nutrition and social inclusion.’
Remi Rooding, Programme Coordinator School of Life
Learning experience, impact and ambition
The Pop-up Kitchen offers a learning environment where students gain practical experience along four Learning Lines: Heart (social connection), Health (healthy food), Head (critical thinking) and Hands (learning by doing). Students also learn essential skills such as teamwork, budget management and inter-cultural cooking. Cooking is used as a learning tool, and in this way knowledge about food production & sustainability is made accessible and shared.
inspire each other in pursuing their ambitions. We are committed to fair and equal opportunities and want to show what the power of the group can bring about. It is more than just a cycling event; it is an outdoor adventure where we take the time to inspire each other. With short campfire presentations and an adventure bingo during the evening programme.’
Iris: ‘We focus on the sporting challenge and try to break through (incorrect) assumptions about women in sports and everyday challenges by extensively recording and sharing our adventures and thus strengthening the community. In addition, it is also just thirty women on fully packed racing bikes who cross the Belgian Ardennes in the winter. That is, in itself, spectacular and special!’
The Sleepover marks the start of a series of events organized from the HeyHeyde Haas/IRIS studio on the NRE site. This summer, the Cheer Squad is back on the agenda, and in the autumn, there will be a new edition of The Sleepover, at a different location and with new routes.

Burst your Bubble
MY FIRST MEETING WAS A KIND OF ACCIDENT
‘When I entered the location, I immediately felt an open, lively and welcoming place. Until that day and after two years of living in Eindhoven from Florence (Italy), I still didn’t have much contact with Dutch people outside work hours and routine. The evening was relaxing, spontaneous, energetic and full of humour about local/international habits. And that’s where the magic happens. Our daily ‘defence’ or acting masks are suddenly no longer needed, you can be yourself, you feel safe, you start to burst your bubbles. That happened to me, and I started to connect, talk and share with different ‘strangers’. Full of wonder and energy I immediately said to myself that I need more of this. I wanted to thank whoever made this possible, who organised it. So, I met Ineke and saw the energy in her eyes. That was amazing and so attractive. It was at that moment that I asked Ineke to join the team and be part of it. Here I am 16 months later, part of this magic. More than that, it is so beautiful to see that this ‘magical force’ repeats itself in every Burst your Bubble event, even during our team meetings and event preparations.
My desire is to be a connector and let everyone see through their own eyes and taste the grace of love, energy and kindness when we let go of our bubbles. In my daily life I am a husband, father and a financial professional with a passion for networking and connecting. Born and raised in Albania until I was 15, I emigrated to Italy in 1991, after the fall of the communist regime. In Bari, capital of the Puglia region, I grew up personally and professionally. I met many caring people and Sandra, my wife. After my university studies in Business Administration, we started our family in Florence: we had two beautiful daughters, Giorgia and Sara. Three and a half years ago I was promoted, and we moved to Eindhoven. Since then, this city has welcomed us and is our new home.
An inclusive city starts with encounters
Last time we let Bert van der Moer talk about his meeting with Ermal Myzequari. This time Ermal himself talks about his experiences: ‘My wife was invited and asked me to come along to this open event for locals and internationals.
Funnily enough, she couldn’t go that night, but I did. It was September 2023.’
According to Ineke Hurkmans, founder of Jump Movement and Burst your Bubble, it’s all about breaking down barriers. ‘We often live in our own world, surrounded by people who are like us. By stepping out of that bubble, space is created for understanding and connection,’ she explains.
Also want to break out of your bubble?

Next time in Eindless Magazine: Chaiwen Lee’s experiences
Burst your Bubble connects internationals & locals with social experiments in the Eindhoven region. Eindless collects the stories that emerge from this. Together they let you look at the city and its inhabitants in a new way, so that you yourself see opportunities to learn more, make contacts and contribute to an inclusive city where everyone is welcome. Burst your Bubble is a method of the Jump Movement Foundation developed by Ineke Hurkmans. Eindless is a publication of the Uit in Eindhoven Foundation.

for St. Patrick’s Day on Monday, March 17
Irish cultural and religious holiday honoring Ireland’s patron saint: St. Patrick. People of Irish descent and others interested in Irish culture celebrate this day worldwide with parades, music, dance, traditional Irish food and drinks, such as Guinness. Clothing and decorations are green, as a symbolic color for Ireland.
Irish Stew
Ingrediënts
• Lamb (or beef), cut into pieces
• Potatoes, cut into cubes
• Carrots, sliced
• Onion, finely chopped
• Garlic, finely chopped
• Beef stock
• Fresh thyme & rosemary
• Salt & pepper to taste
Preparation
Fry the lamb briefly in a large pan until browned. Remove from the pan. Fry the onion and garlic in the same pan until soft. Add the potatoes, carrots, thyme and rosemary. Stir well and add the lamb back to the pan. Pour in the beef stock until everything is just covered. Bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the meat and vegetables are cooked, about 1.5 hours. Season with salt & pepper. Serve warm with fresh bread or colcannon as a warm side dish.
Colcannon
Vegetarian main or side dish
Boil 750g potatoes in a large pan of lightly salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Add 300g finely sliced green cabbage and cook for a further 5-7 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender. Drain, add 100ml milk and butter and mash the potatoes & cabbage to a coarse puree. Season with salt and pepper and stir in 4 finely chopped spring onions.
