About the bond we forge

In February, big names beckon in our city: The London Philharmonic Orchestra in the Muziekgebouw, International Theater Group Amsterdam that stages Prima Facie; a piece that explores the power of vulnerability. But while these moments enchant us, I also want to reflect on the story that lies in the shadow of big events. That is a story that does not scream for attention but rather demands to be seen in its silent impact. A story of dedication, determination, and the people who, not even on stage or in the spotlight, build the culture that makes the Brainport Region of Eindhoven so unique.

The figures about our visibility underline this. In 2024, online visitors to our schedule grew by 10%, an organic increase to 87,000 unique visitors, while we completely rebuilt uitineindhoven.nl in 2022. Eindless also reached 60,000 unique readers via ISSUU, while our physical circulation of 40,000 copies per year generated an impressive reach of 187,000 per edition without advertisements or artificial stimulation. This is pure, authentic engagement, achieved through the bond we forge between the city and its residents. The stories we tell find their way to diverse communities, from internationals to locals, and form a network of connections.

saw Eindhoven change

Uit India in Eindhoven Chaitali Sengupta

Chaitali Sengupta is a published author based in Eindhoven and running a small online language institute where she teaches basic Dutch to highly educated internationals, mainly from India. She has been a volunteer journalist for Eindhoven Nieuws and is the first Indian woman to be involved in local politics.

Chaitali is the perfect person to help us get to know better the vast Indian community present in our region.

You arrived in Eindhoven, very young, almost 24 years ago. Has it changed for the better? What is still missing and needs improvement?

‘Moving to Eindhoven was a significant change for me. didn’t speak the language, missed my comfort food, and found the weather chilly and grey. had to adjust to a new way of life, learning not only the language but also the social customs and daily rhythms of Dutch life. Eindhoven was a different place back then. In the past 24 years, the city’s skyline has transformed beyond recognition. Where there were once empty spaces, there are modern buildings and bustling streets. The city has grown, and with it, the energy and vibrancy of the place. Though the weather still has its chilly moments, I’ve come to appreciate the beauty in the seasons here, and I’ve made the Netherlands feel like home. In many ways, think that Eindhoven has undoubtedly changed for the better. The city has modernised, and the skyline now features sleek, innovative architecture. New developments have brought in more international companies, making it a hub for tech and design. The cultural scene has grown, with new restaurants, events, and a more vibrant city centre, making it livelier and more diverse. However, there are still areas that need improvement. While the city has grown and become more cosmopolitan, there is still room for deeper integration of international communities. And, as the city grows, there’s a need to maintain a balance between modernization and preserving its historical charm. Housing affordability remains a concern for many residents. They also face challenges in finding school places for children, with many families dealing with waiting lists.’

In your political activity, what do you do the most?

‘I am an active member of the CDA political party, assisting our councilor, Miriam Frosi, with her internationalisation efforts. We initiated a dialogue platform called Connecting Cultures to organise events that foster discussions on integration, learning Dutch, and social cohesion for both internationals and locals. also raise awareness about the challenges faced by the international community, particularly the Indian community, and promote integration and support. Additionally, I’m a member of the Indian Diaspora Council (IDC), where connect individuals and organisations to advocate for the interests of the Indian and Hindustani Suriname diaspora in the Netherlands.’

You are also very active in the Meerhoven neighbourhood.

‘Our vibrant, multicultural neighbourhood has many residents with a migration background. To foster social connections and promote a love of reading, I organised a children’s reading session with Dutch and English books. Unfortunately, we lack a library and community centre, so we’ve submitted a petition to Mayor Dijsselbloem to advocate for this cause. Once a year, host a charity event, with my students, to collect non-perishable food for the Eindhoven Food Bank. It’s my way of giving back, and the community supports this initiative.’

Tell us about the Indian community.

‘The Indian community in Eindhoven is growing rapidly; it is one of the largest.

Primarily made up of highly skilled immigrants, who play a significant role in the growth of the Brainport economy through their hard work in multinational companies. As a result, there are many groups and associations, each offering a rich array of cultural activities showcasing the diversity of our culture through performances, cuisine, dance, and traditional clothing. Foundations like Stichting Sanskriti & Sanskar have even collaborated with local Dutch community groups to celebrate festivals like Diwali, Sinterklaas, and Christmas, fostering cross-cultural exchange. Other popular Indian events are Ganeshotsav, Diwali, Harvest Celebrations from India, and Shri Balaji Kalyanam. All the Indian groups and associations in the city work under a consortium called the Eindhoven Indian Community Consortium (EICC). They organise community events together and help and support each other during more significant appointments, but they also have their own.’

What do you think is the most complex problem to solve when coming to live here from so far away?

‘When I first arrived, I faced cultural shock. Over time, I learned the language and tried to understand Dutch customs and culture. A significant challenge for newcomers is social and cultural integration. Not knowing the language limits social interactions, job opportunities, and daily life navigation. Building connections with locals can be slow, leading to feelings of isolation. Adapting to Dutch culture, which values directness, independence, and gezelligheid takes time. The work-life balance may also differ from what you’re used to. Building a strong support network and accessing resources like language classes and community groups is crucial for easing this transition.’

You are a writer, journalist and Dutch teacher. What will you dedicate yourself to for this new year?

‘I am excited to promote my new book, Across the Luminous Realms and Other Stories from Legends, Myths, and Fantasy published in January in India and Europe. This marks my first translation of works by the renowned author Louis Couperus from Dutch to English. I will continue teaching Dutch language classes to skilled immigrants who are preparing for their integration exams and dedicate time to my next book.’

To stay up to date on Indian activities for and by the Indian community, follow EICC.

‘When I first came here, I had a culture shock. After that I learned to understand the language and Dutch customs and culture.’

INDIAN COMMUNITY

The Indian community in Eindhoven and the Brainport region is growing rapidly, with around 6,500 first-generation residents in Eindhoven. The community mainly consists of highly educated knowledge migrants, often with families, who work in technology and IT. Some stay, others settle long-term. Their contribution to the economy and culture is significant, while challenges such as integration and housing require attention.

A form of getting used to

While follow the route numbers, the smell of freshly roasted coffee comes towards me. did not expect that in this place. Luxury sandwiches, smoothies and shiny fruit are nicely displayed in the display case. Still, I have another coffee and a ‘healthy’ cookie. It is busy at the checkout. Automatically, I reach into my bag for my purse. Every day decide to put it in the compartment without a zip, without success. A slight panic sets in, I do not feel my smooth purse anywhere. My mind is not on it.

put my purchases aside and quickly walk back to the car. Fortunately, it is on the passenger seat. Back inside then, up the stairs, into the hallway, the numbers follow; my coffee and treats are still there. Quickly pay and continue. am already starting to get used to the hospital. For the past two weeks, I have been coming here every day to visit someone dear to me who is seriously ill. From one day to the next, this place has become a regular destination. I don’t really want to be here, but when stand outside after visiting hours, I feel the urge to go back inside. As if I am abandoning someone. can go wherever I want; the other person has to stay.

The first few days, this place oppressed me. Of course, because of the shock that someone close is suddenly so vulnerable. But also because of the clinical smell, the corridors, the artificial light, the lack of fresh air, the many people who come towards you, walk behind you or want to overtake you. As walk, faces flash past me; who is ill? Who is healthy? What could someone have?

A quick glance at the pale man with an IV. How do you deal with the fact that your health is failing? What do you say and what not to say to someone who is ill? Nevertheless, am slowly beginning to accept the new setting. It’s strange that, in addition to the care and stress you have, you start to see this environment as the new normal. A week ago, it seemed like a maze where I kept taking the wrong turn and kept walking in circles. That’s much better now, can find the department in one go. What helps are the shop and small restaurant employees, you see them every day. One of the ladies asked if the present I bought last week had been well received. Here too, attention and small gestures are important. And then of course the joy of the person you visit, the support you can give. White doctors and nurses’ uniforms but also visitors’ colourful clothing whiz by. The daily stream of people comes from everywhere and nowhere. Sometimes your gaze meets with someone you don’t know at all and you feel solidarity. They also have worries and, like me, hope for a good outcome for their loved one. The hospital gets used to it. It is a place of shared time. A place of vulnerability, strength, hope and fear. Hopefully I won’t come here again for a while, but will certainly think back to it.

Eindhoven is one big construction site in the coming years. The result will be fantastic, we are getting a real skyline! New York on the Dommel. But until then, it is quite a hassle with those pounding piles, inconvenient diversions and an excess of construction traffic. Our advice? Build along! Just create pieces of historical Eindhoven yourself with LEGO® building sets. Great fun for at home on the windowsill. This will definitely elicit reactions from your visitors.

Studio Thier & van Daalen PEBBLE necklace pendants 3x

Iris van Daalen & Ruben Thier work together (since the Design Academy - 2010). Their design starts with the apparent contradiction between rationality and intuition. Ruben is more the rational and technical half of the duo and Iris works more from intuition, color and sense of form. Their designs are a fusion between the natural behavior of a material and a path devised by them. So they put something of themselves into a natural process. Sustainability is important to this duo: “You can make something that looks very nice, but if the materials or production lines are bad or stressful, the world will not become a more beautiful place.”

PARKTHEATER EINDHOVEN | 20:00 | DANCE Scapino Ballet Rotterdam Cathedral, an evening with Arvo Pärt

Scapino Ballet Rotterdam is reprising the successful production Cathedral, an evening with Arvo Pärt by Spanish dance and theatre maker Marcos Morau. With a combination of art disciplines, special design and an inventive movement language, Morau is one of the most prominent dance artists in the European theatre world. Cathedral shows a world in which life is dominated by digital technologies and in which we are increasingly losing each other. With the mystical music of Arvo Pärt as a heartbeat, Morau and the dancers go in search of what makes us human and what our relationship is with nature. Morau and his team of Spanish artists design a retro-futuristic stage design with life-size video projections.

London Philharmonic Orchestra

‘As a pilot, don’t have everything under control. I can manage my instruments and nerves, but not the weather. As a conductor, I have control over my own knowledge and musical intuition, but not over the musicians—I have to trust them,’ said conductor (and amateur pilot) Dima Slobodeniouk in an interview. Everything is bound to go perfectly with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Regular visitors know: when this renowned English orchestra lands on the stage of Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, something special is about to happen. This fantastic group of musicians consistently delivers top-tier orchestral performance.

In Schërzo Släpstick’s idiosyncratic, swirling and hilarious view of classical music, nothing is what it seems. The five musical all-rounders take you on a crazy trip along the masterpieces of Rossini, Brahms, Saint-Saëns, Gershwin and many other illustrious composers. Experience the boundless universe of Släpstick yourself, with a dizzying amount of instruments, acclaimed theatrical discoveries and classical music at the highest level.

The French singer Barbara Pravi achieved an impressive second place at the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam with her single “Voilà.” Her music is deeply rooted in the French tradition, inspired by vocal legends such as Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf. Pravi incorporates these influences in a fresh, contemporary way, bringing her unique interpretation of chanson to life. Known for her captivating performances that go beyond a typical concert experience, she lives for her audience. Armed with new music, the French chanteuse is once again touring theaters across Europe and will return to Muziekgebouw Eindhoven!

“Imagine: you go out to eat, you know the chef, but there’s no menu,” said András Schiff With an almost shy voice and a charming Hungarian accent, he addressed his audience in London. After the pandemic, the 71-year-old master pianist decided it was time for a new approach. After all, how could he possibly determine a year and a half in advance what he would want to play on a particular evening? Since then, he has allowed himself to be entirely guided by the moment. What you will hear tonight at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven is, therefore, a truly surprising experience.

The Eagles and kindred spirits. When they were founded, The Dutch Eagles never dared to dream that their adventure would be on the road for so long. The past 20 years have flown by. For the band, a moment to reflect on the most beautiful moments and musical highlights during this tour. With an exciting excursion here and there, but of course the classics will not be missing in this theatre concert.

Chica Chica

Psychedelic cumbia, exotic film scores, and danceable grooves form the foundation of Chica Chica’s thrilling music. Bassist and frontwoman Judith Renkema (Alvaro Soler, Komodo, Judy Blank), guitarist Jeroen Kant, and drummer Ties Voskamp (Cocobolo) take you on a musical road trip at Kaleidoscope, filled with funky basslines, fiery guitars, and South American percussion. After their debut in 2022, their first album was released at the end of 2023. In early 2024, they shone at Eurosonic Noorderslag, quickly becoming a sought-after act at summer festivals. Later that year, the band toured the country during Popronde 2024. With their second album in the works, Chica Chica is a band to watch!

Talent development

Music programming

Afterparties

Distinctive

Jong Cultuur Eindhoven, one of the talents:

NORI XHOFLEER

‘Self-expression and music are the common thread.’ As a child, Nori was already very busy with ways to express and distinguish herself.

‘Visually with clothing, and when I got a bit older with music. As if I was a person from a film or series and had to find a specific soundtrack for it.’ In her work for Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, she mainly focuses on the expression of others and ensures that they get the stage they deserve. We see Nori as a fine, young talent who we definitely have to portray in this series.

Who are you and what do you do? ‘My name is Nori Xhofleer. was born in Eindhoven in 2001 but lived in Tilburg for a few years for my studies, International Event, Music & Entertainment. Now that my partner and I have moved back, I can call myself a real Eindhovenaar again. As a programmer at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, work on the various programming lines in M, programme the lunch break and children’s concerts and I am involved in talent development at various levels. For example, I organise afterparties after Grote Zaal concerts, where young and/or starting artists end the evening.’

Artistic drive or inner motivation

‘I am happiest when I feel that have room for self-expression or see this in others and can support them, someone on the street who dresses flamboyantly, an artist with a very unique branding; it immediately catches my attention and I can admire it immensely. I really want to offer people a suitable stage where they can come into their own.’

Generation Z is known as digitally skilled, socially aware, resilient. Which word suits you best? ‘Resilient. think that at the beginning of your career you have to keep both feet on the ground but also be able to withstand a knockback. also think it is a good quality if you can remain light-hearted.’

What kind of arts or creative projects do you like to watch or listen to? like to go to live events and concerts. I also love strongly conceptual photography and film. The recent work of Nona Limmen for the Roadburn Festival is an example of this. And I fall for dance and drag, love divas with a ‘larger than life’ energy. It inspires me to be a bit bold in the things want myself.’

Nori in the future ‘I will stay in the music industry no matter what, no matter the form. want to help artists, both beginners and established, in every possible way to land in the places where they really come into their own. When was still in school, I could look far ahead and see a path for myself. I found it difficult to deviate from that, that’s how it ‘had to’ go. Since I started working, have that a lot less. I celebrate the small victories more quickly now, but I am also still discovering and learning a lot. It gives me peace of mind that don’t have to know it all yet.’

Participants in Jong Cultuur are jointly organising unique cultural activities until the end of March 2025, from workshops and exhibitions to performing arts and performances, tours and meetings. Free for young people! You can choose from various activities, during special JC Weekends or throughout the year. Discover, experience and create together with other young people in Eindhoven. My good intentions

Preparing meals for the week at the weekend. We are now halfway through the month; have not started yet. Didn’t even think about it. Fail! Exercising twice a week in a gym. I succeeded, check. Walking for at least half an hour every day. Check. Meditating for half an hour every day before going to sleep. Not bad. can be proud that I even have a few minutes of peace in my brain, check. More attention for the children. What do I actually mean by this? More cuddles, more fun things to do outside the home, more schoolwork attention? More one-on-one attention? More one-on-one attention outside the home? That will be quite a challenge as a single mother with six children. Phew, never mind. see them every day, my children don’t complain, they feel good about themselves, so I think I’m doing fine. Check. More structure in the household, I am looking for a good cleaning lady, check. Better work/ life balance, no more than two evenings a week available for work. Never mind, that intention can go in the bin. ‘Journaling’ in the morning for better effectiveness. Who made me do this again?? get irritated by the word, never mind. Less judging. That could have gone in the bin the first week of January, when I saw two adults, made up as elves, hopping past hand in hand at de Efteling. Can happiness really be that simple? But the point remains: sincerely want to judge less and look at my fellow human beings with more compassion. Reformulation. Only judge when am at de Efteling. Check!

have already failed on these intentions a few times within a month. Despite that, still get along fine with myself. 2025 has already started, it will be a fantastic year!

Burst your Bubble

FROM STRANGERS TO FRIENDS

A message on Linkedin caught his attention. Bert van der Moer signed up for Burst your Bubble. ‘Meeting new people outside my familiar circle of acquaintances seemed like a valuable opportunity to me,’ he says. Through the Burst your Bubble WhatsApp, Bert was matched with Ermal Myzequari, an Italian of Albanian descent. They made contact via WhatsApp: ‘Ermal introduced himself and immediately reassured me.’

A warm welcome at the cozy location follows. That immediately breaks the ice: ‘A hospitable, cheerful reception immediately puts me at ease. In a funny, playful way I get to know other guests. The creative assignments help me to loosen up. In no time speak to people from Albania, Italy, Denmark, Lithuania, Greece, India, the US and a few other countries. Cleverly set up and very special to hear how hey are coping with living and working in the Netherlands. The English language literally bridges the cultural gap, although many internationals would also like to speak Dutch.’

Bert especially appreciated the depth of the conversations. ‘It takes some getting used to being so personal but entrusting each other with challenges and dreams is sensitive and intimate. It connects. was touched by the sincere and serious interest of the (often young) participants in my experiences - as a professional, as a person in the past and in the active present. Their respect made me almost shy, but it felt great to get to know strangers who quickly felt like friends. Friends with admirable ambitions.’

An inclusive city starts with encounters

How often do you break out of your bubble?

For Bert van der Moer, entrepreneur, design thinker & coach at Fontys, this became a valuable experience thanks to Burst your Bubble, where locals and internationals are brought together in an accessible and creative way. The personal stories that this produces make the difference and lay the foundation for an inclusive community in which everyone feels welcome and lasting connections are made.

According to Ineke Hurkmans, founder of Jump Movement and Burst your Bubble, it’s all about breaking down barriers. ‘We often live in our own world, surrounded by people who are like us. By stepping out of that bubble, space is created for understanding and connection,’ she explains. More bubbles burst

For participants like Bert, the programme provides new friendships and insights. ‘It feels good to broaden my world and help others do the same,’ he says.

Naima E Jaouhari

Project Manager for Diversity & Inclusion at Driessen in Helmond, Naima El Jaouhhari’s rich, diverse cultural background spans across Europe.

Having grown up in Germany and studied in the UK, she moved to Eindhoven three years ago. On a rainy winter afternoon, Naima reflected on her experiences, offering insights into the insideroutsider dynamic - a feeling familiar to many internationals, who, despite being integral to their adopted country, still find themselves on the margins of the cultural mainstream.

Despite being born and raised in Germany and building a successful career there, Naima never truly felt at home in the country. ‘There was always this phantom voice, a subtle sense of being different, of being the ‘other.’ Even without overt discrimination, there was an unspoken message: didn’t belong,’ she said. Her experience echoes the everyday exclusions Audre Lorde describes: ‘quiet silences, unspoken gestures, and societal cues subtly signaling to minorities that they are not fully part of the mainstream.’

‘Not difference immobilizes us, but silence. Not our differences separate us, but our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences’
Audre Lorde, Sister Outsider (1984)

Naima critiques Germany’s concept of Leitkultur (leading culture), which she sees as an over-simplification of societal diversity. ‘Nations are multi-faceted, and so are their people. Different regions have distinct traditions, making Leitkultur hard to define,’ she explained. ‘A unified culture gains importance only when someone doesn’t fit the mold - when they look, eat, or pray differently, speak another language or follow different customs.’ Leitkultur becomes a monolith, defined against the culture of the ‘foreigner.’

Growing up brown and Muslim, Naima’s experience underscores the complexities of identity: ‘Why should have to choose between being Moroccan, Muslim, German or Dutch? Identity isn’t about picking sides or fitting into neat categories but embracing many elements.’ She decribes her evolving understanding of identity ‘as a choreography’ - a dynamic movement in response to life’s circumstances. ‘I never feel tied to one version of myself; I’m always evolving and adapting.’

As more locals voice concerns about changes in their neighbourhoods, Naima reflects on the shifting concept of belonging: ‘Many Dutch people feel sidelined, sensing a loss of cultural identity. But at the core, we’re all the same. We may differ in background, but we all share the same desires—to belong, to connect, and to build community. We want to see our children playing together. That’s what home truly is.’
