Spring changes everything. The city opens up, moves and buzzes. Terraces fill up, the first festival beats sound through the streets and new plans speak. King’s Day, Easter, a walk in the sun, or just a refreshing dive into everything the day has to offer; this Eindless takes you to places where it’s vibrant. To young creators who colour the city, to new exhibitions, concert halls or theatres. Or to nature. Captured in watercolours, or in real life. There are nice or in-depth workshops, there is art that asks questions, and there is an schedule that sends you out all month long. In all that lightness, there is also the reality of all those places in the world where freedom is not a given. Art is under pressure; voices are being silenced. While Eindhoven grows and blossoms, there is no escape. That is precisely why we celebrate where you can go. Go out of your own free will, let yourself be surprised, and speak and live fully. Stay on track, go out. This is Eindless.

- the gateway to the Brainport region. With direct connections to and from London, Alicante, Budapest and other destinations, the airport brings people closer together for holidays, work or family visits. What will stay with you is that very first impression; he airport is Brabant hospitable and welcomes passengers with an organised service and good connections. This is where your journey begins. Are you coming?
‘We really love it here’
Arrival from London
Christina Atanasova
Age 25 • Nationality Bulgarian
‘I have arranged to meet my friends; one of them lives and works in Eindhoven. I am waiting for a friend from Bulgaria and then we will go to our other friend together.’ They all come from Bulgaria, they know each other from high school or through friends. They see each other a few times a year, often with Eindhoven as their meeting place. ‘I really think this is a student city. There may not be as much to do as in London, but the range of things to do is growing. Walking together, bowling or going to an escape room, where we have a lot of fun. We eat at home, or we go out for dinner or drinks in a nice pub. There is so much space in the city, and we like to walk through the city centre or in the park. I heard that the estate will soon become a park. We definitely want to go there!’
Christina Atanasova, Software Engineer, lives in London, near the Arsenal Football Stadium..

‘It’s small, clean and friendly here’

Jing Xuan Yang
Age 36 • Nationality Chinese
‘For my work as a sales manager in China, I recently moved to Austria to be closer to our customers. Many customers are in Europe and the Netherlands; in the Brainport Region, Eindhoven, Deventer and Den Bosch. I have visited customers from Eindhoven in the past few days. I slept and ate here. If I had time left, I went to explore the city. I am now on my way to Barcelona where I will also visit customers. This base, via Eindhoven Airport, is nice because it is organised and there are good public transport connections to other cities’
Jing comes from China, lives in Austria, works for Aceons as a sales manager for various customers throughout Europe.
Eindhoven Airport has 7 million passengers annually, which is an average of more than 18,000 arriving and departing people every day. 53% of them travel for a holiday or city trip, 33% for family and/or friends and 14% make a business trip. However short their visit, the airport strengthens the growth of the region for settling, for living and working, and in economic terms.
Practical, efficient and often described as unremarkable, Eindhoven may not immediately appeal to the imagination. But for Ilka van Steen, Programme Coordinator at the Design Academy, and her husband
‘“A city is not measured by its length and breadth, but by the breadth of its vision and the height of its dreams’
Herb Caen
Sietse van den Berg, owner of Bagels & Beans in the city centre, the city has become much more than just a place to live. It is their home, their workplace and an environment full of unexpected connections. On a lazy Sunday afternoon, sitting under the winter sun in their Meerhoven front garden, we talked about life, design and the changing character of the city.
Thanks to motherhood, the many green spaces and the feeling of safety in her surroundings, Ilka’s perspective changed. Her work at the Eindhoven Design Academy is also an important factor, as she contributes to the collective effort of shaping the future of the city: ‘We represent the human aspect of progress by tackling climate change and reinventing power structures. In essence, this means that we shape society through design.’ Sietse’s journey has been different. Born in Veldhoven, he spent years working in demanding, stressful professional kitchens. ‘Like on a Gordon Ramsay show,’ he says. The turning point came when he discovered his passion for coffee and eventually opened several Bagels & Beans locations. Inspired by the storytelling of comics and literature, he sees parallels between the geopolitical themes in stories like Tintin and today’s Eindhoven. Although Sietse is aware of the problematic portrayal of the Congolese in Hergé’s early work, he admires the Clear Line style, the ability of Hergé – Tintin’s creator and illustrator - to capture the zeitgeist and the subtle way in which he challenged racial prejudice. In Eindhoven too, he sees how ‘all histories, truths and realities shape the city.’ Sietse believes that listening to each other and transforming our worldviews as Hergé did will change the way we see and interact with each other.
It is their children’s friendships and the familiar faces that return to Bagels & Beans day in, day out; Ilka and Sietse greatly appreciate everyday life in Eindhoven. Eindhoven may not have the grandeur of cities like Amsterdam, Utrecht, London or New York, but its openness, its unpretentiousness and the fact that the future is still being written here make it a city to keep an eye on - and to stay with.
Working with watercolour is often seen as a meditative art form. If you practice this with calm and attention, it helps people to develop a sense of autonomy and self-confidence. There is no judgment or goal, only the pleasure of painting. In the English illustrator Laura Carter’s workshops in the Apparatenfabriek on Strijp-S in Eindhoven, beginners are introduced to this art form. Shall we explore her special, illustrated world?
Laura Carter has lived in the Eindhoven Irisbuurt since 2009. She combines her work as an illustrator and artist with her life here, together with her Dutch partner and son. Laura’s work is strongly inspired by nature. ‘I spent my youth in the English and Scottish countryside. I still feel drawn to nature. In Eindhoven I look for every green spot I can find - and there are surprisingly many! Even the smallest piece has layers and beauty.’ Favorite places? ‘At the weekend we sometimes cycle to the Stratumse Heide for a picnic and to watch birds. I have fibromyalgia and am therefore chronically ill. Cycling far is not possible, but if you look closely, you will find greenery in every corner of Eindhoven.’
The theme Environmental sustainability is important to you. How do you apply this in your daily work?
‘I cannot imagine not capturing nature in my illustrations. It is always unique, there is always something beautiful to encapsulate. I feel a natural flow and a deeper connection when I am working on a new piece. I grew up in the countryside and miss it, and I would also hate it if my son did not experience that magic. For me it is therefore essential that I incorporate nature into my illustrations and that I produce my creations sustainably. Making art may seem like a small contribution, but I hope that in this way I leave something valuable for future generations. Sharing and spreading the love for nature is so important.’
“Many diseases of our time are related to incorrect breathing. Just like our feelings and thoughts, our inhalation and exhalation are often not in harmony. Our inner and outer worlds flow in a disturbed rhythm.
Rhythmic painting with transparent layers has an exceptionally healthy effect on our middle area, because it has a harmonizing effect on our heart rate and breathing through our emotional life. In painting, especially with watercolour, the language and atmosphere of colour are particularly soothing and liberating..”
Eva Mes-Christeller, Artistic therapies
You have started organising watercolor workshops. I find this to be one of the most relaxing activities. What feedback have you had from participants?
‘An increasingly important part of my work is connecting with the community. Every opportunity to give a workshop, whether it’s drawing, printing or watercolour, is a fantastic opportunity to let people slow down and take a creative breather.’
They either go home completely relaxed or with a new obsession! Some come back again and again because they love it so much. Over the past few years, I’ve had participants from all walks of life, from international students to people who have lived in Eindhoven their whole lives. The great thing is that we find each other in our shared love of nature, a theme that always comes back in the workshops.’
What’s on the programme?
For those who want to be creative this spring, Laura is organising botanical watercolour sessions. In addition, she is launching her new three-part mini course ‘Sketching Animals’ on 29 March.
‘A footballer who came out in 2021 still receives death threats every day,’ I read online on Wednesday morning. Australian professional footballer Joshua Cavallo says he still receives death threats every day. Despite this, he still considers it his best decision to be open about who he is. In fact, he would have liked to have done it much sooner.
Living a lie and not being able to be yourself was hard for him. Although Cavallo himself is very open, he does not advise every homosexual player to follow his example because of the major effect it has on their private life. You have to be able to cope with being bombarded with negativity every day or being insulted for entire matches. There are now several footballers who have ‘come out’, but the football world remains a toxic place to be open about homosexuality and is still far from acceptance.
As Dutch – raised and educated in a free country – I continue to be deeply surprised by the opinions of the haters. Over the years, our language school has had quite a few students who are lesbian or homosexual and from countries where their orientation is not accepted at all. In fact, they were in serious danger and therefore decided to flee their country. Once in the Netherlands, they may be safe, but some of them still have to be on their guard. Their stories still make a deep impression on me. About their youth, which was often lonely and full of rejection, violence and pain. Despite their difficult existence, some of our students chose to stay in their home country as long as possible, until it finally became too much, and they fled to the Netherlands. Most of them are doing well now, but after a long struggle and with great loss of their family and home country. I really hope that they have found their place in our society and that we have been able to support them at least a little during the time that they learned Dutch with us.
Unfortunately, it is still far from the case that homosexuality is always accepted in the Netherlands. Walking down the street hand in hand, is that possible? Being open and being yourself? If you look at the exuberant gay pride, it seems as if the whole of the Netherlands embraces homosexuality. But with so many different cultures and religions, there is still a mountain of work to be done to achieve that. Even in our school there was a student who told me that he was being followed and felt unsafe in the group. He strongly requested me not to do anything about it. Telling me was enough for him. For me it was very unnatural and frustrating to remain silent, but I promised him that I would listen, and I did. It did bother me for a long time; both students were refugees. One fled because he could never be himself in his own country because of his sexual orientation, the other because he could not stay because of his political views. Then you are together in a free country, together in a group to learn the Dutch language and then you still do not have the tolerance to accept the other’s sexual orientation. With our new slogan, ‘Embrace new cultures, learn the language’ we mean that in addition to learning language, truly embracing each other is just as important. ‘Embrace new cultures, truly embrace each other’

TUE 15 APRIL
PARKTHEATER EINDHOVEN | 20:00 | THEATER
Jan Kooijman, Edwin Jonker e.a. Nieuwe Buren
After the overwhelming success of The Banana Generation, director Char Li Chung takes a new step in Asian representation in Dutch theatre. With Madame Butterfly, he brings a radical and contemporary response to Puccini’s world-famous opera. In this adaptation, the orientalist male perspective is no longer central, but CioCio-San, played by Cystine Carreon, is given a say in her own story and it was high time!
An absurdist satire and a search for hope in dark times. Origin presents two world premieres by award-winning avant-garde dance makers. In GOATS, Sarah Baltzinger & Isaiah Wilson create an imaginative satire on social systems and power structures, while Olivia Court Mesa explores how trauma shapes our humanity in the breakable us. Two powerful and innovative dance pieces that make you think and change your view of the world.
Jan Kooijman can be seen in the stage adaptation of one of Saskia Noort’s most popular books: Nieuwe Buren. The story about love, jealousy, friendship and adultery is exciting and full of temptation. Eva and Peter, a young couple who have just lost their daughter, move to a luxurious new-build neighbourhood. There they become entangled in the lives of their seemingly perfect neighbors, Rebecca and Steef. What starts as a friendship leads to explosive secrets and underlying tensions that put everything on edge.
Jeroen Spitzenberger plays Cyrano, his dream role. The iconic love story of Cyrano de Bergerac is a tragicomic classic, now in a brand new adaptation with sparkling poetry and live music. Who will run off with the beautiful Roxanne? Cyrano with his boundless love and charismatic personality or Christian with his big heart and beauty? This timeless story about love and self-image and the pressure of society is a classic that you must have seen.
Wherever women live, Nina de la Parra wants to play. Oh, and wherever men live too. Because although we really do our best to understand each other better, there is still so much to learn, to bring together, to shout out, to discuss, to desire, to feel and to laugh out loud. A theatre tornado by Nina de la Parra, child of two countries, daughter of theatre and comedy and sister to every woman.
When did you first think about whether to have children? How often have you had (unwanted) conversations about it? How often have you changed your mind? A desire for children. No desire for children. And then? In Battlefield of Dreams, Theater Utrecht brings together a collection of intimate stories and experiences. It is a documentary, opera, talk show and theater performance in one.

Roger Vrede has been building the comedy platform Comedy Vibe since 2015: ‘Our shows offer something for everyone, from Dutch-language performances and Surinamese comedy to international shows with comedians from America and England. We have already worked with big names, such as Taccara Williams, who recently toured with comedy legend Katt Williams, and with the iconic Godfrey, with whom we created one of our largest international comedy productions.’
Roger Vrede: ‘Godfrey is a phenomenon. This wellrespected comedian from America, with Nigerian roots and raised in Chicago, has worked with heroes in the comedy scene such as Bernie Mac and D.L. Hugley, played in films with Snoop Dogg and Kevin Hart and participated in Nick Cannon’s Wild ’N Out. Isn’t it great that he played in our beautiful Brabant at Comedy Vibe in the Parktheater?’
The Comedy Vibe stand-up comedy events are meant to bring people together for an unforgettable evening. Since Roger has lived in Eindhoven, he has been committed to a diverse and high-quality comedy scene in this area. ‘My ultimate goal is to continue using comedy as a connecting force, especially here in Eindhoven.’ With permanent locations such as the Perron-3 in Rosmalen and Parktheater Eindhoven and new locations such as the Ketelhuis on Strijp-S, Comedy Vibe continues to grow. Cities such as Arnhem, Groningen, Amsterdam and Rotterdam are already on the map, and Tilburg, Zwolle and even Belgium will soon be added.
Platform where everyone feels at home
‘I wanted to create a comedy platform where everyone feels at home, regardless of background. In many places, such as Amsterdam, the scene was already diverse and multi-lingual, but in Eindhoven I missed that. I love raw, urban humour. Then I came across Rayen Panday and Nabil and it was clear to me; I want this kind of humor in Brabant too. What makes our shows special is the unique atmosphere. The diverse audience, the varied line-up of comedians and the perfect combination of music, Comedy Vibes conquers Eindhoven. Since 2015, Roger Vrede has
been building the comedy platform Comedy Vibe: ‘Our shows offer something for everyone from Dutchlanguage performances and Surinamese comedy to international shows with comedians from America and England. We have already worked with big names, such as Taccara Williams, who recently toured with comedy legend Katt Williams, and with the iconic Godfrey, with whom we created one of our largest international comedy productions.’ And catering to ensure a complete experience. Our success is evident from the full venues and sold-out shows. We are extremely proud of our collaborations with comedy greats such as Roué Verveer, Patrick Laureij and Kor Hoebe. And soon we will welcome none other than Jandino to our stage.’
In addition to the big names, Comedy Vibe also offers a stage to emerging talent, so that they can develop and grow within the comedy world. Roger: A good example is Gerrie Smits, a comedian we have been working closely with since 2016 and who is currently selling out venues with his show Zoete Koek. And we have also been able to introduce stand-up comedy at schools. I wanted to strengthen the connection between parents and teachers by having them come together in a hall at school and laugh. This completely changes the image you have of the teachers you see at school. We tend to forget that they are also just people and have a life besides being a teacher.’
With Comedy Vibe you will experience a fun night out with colleagues, a partner or family.
Comedy fans take note. ‘Typisch Brabant’will bring two different shows in one day to the Next Nature Museum (EVOLUON) in April, with no fewer than nine comedians from Brabant, with roots in other cultures: Suriname, Eritrea, Italy, Morocco, Ireland.
Laughing, enjoying and coming together, that is Comedy Vibe. Don’t miss it!

An UFO makes a rough landing in an unknown universe. From the smoldering remains steps our fearless hero Captain Spaceman. Mr. Monster makes cartoonish, idiosyncratic and visual action theater and is known for hit shows such as Lucky Luuk, The Gruffalo, Over een kleine Mol… and De Waanzinnige Boomhut van 13 Verdiepingen. With their work they won a Silver Cricket and the ZAPP theater prize.
The gallery shows work that shows both the beauty and the transience of (human) nature. According to Eliot Allsop, the line between civilization and destruction is thin. Jacques van Erven’s landscape paintings show nature in a non-paradisiacal way. Hanneke Giezen’s work is about beauty and ugliness, good and bad taste.
How do you give shape to feelings that words fail to express? Inspired by Mary Wigman, a pioneer of expressionist dance, artist in residence Francine Claassen investigates how movement can be a universal language. In a time of harsh words and division, she searches for a different means of communication: one that speaks, connects and touches through the body.
Mary Wigman (1886 –1973) used her body as a medium for emotion and inner struggle: a radical gesture that is more relevant today than ever. Francine wants to connect her powerful visual work with contemporary dance styles such as hip-hop, Afro and oriental dance in a growing interactive installation, and collaborates with amateurs and professionals, young and old. The space is used as a sketchbook, in which movement transforms into a 3D collage of text, photo and drawing.
In a Photobook Talk at Pennings Foundation, three renowned photographers – Mariet Dingemans, Bas Losekoot and Erik van Cuyk – presented and discussed their latest books, published by Eindhovenbased publisher Lecturis. They gave an insight into the intensive process of making a photobook.

Iris Slappendel was a professional cyclist for twelve years. She wasa champion. And she still is, but now in stylishness. The prejudice that cycling clothing is weird and especially very boring is no longer valid. This image was once broken by the brand Rapha, whose cycling clothing was tight in style… and actually a bit for old richmen ;-). Not IRIS. Slappendel’s designs are graphic, colourful and other wise just plain cool. In her shop you can buy a whole outfit: shirts, jackets, bibs, training pants, caps, the whole shabam, even gloves and socks.
For the cyclists who read this: it’s a candy store!

Ceramicist and artist Anika is one of the driving forces behind Klei Café 040, where she lets people get started with clay. She also bakes some of it herself. Literally of course, but also for real. Her treasure chests, for example, are sweet and intimate. They are ceramic altars in which you can place small objects. People often have small items that they value or that hold important memories. It can be anything, such as holiday finds or items from a deceased loved one. By collecting them in this Treasure Chest, they get a place of honor in your home. An altar for memories. Isn’t that incredibly sweet and beautiful?

Designer Aart van Asseldonk is a craftsman who is inspired bythe industrial. His work is a beautiful mix of traditional skills with modern details and innovative craftsmanship. Educated in Arnhem, he now lives and makes here in the region. The location? A farm in Mariaheide (sounds like a dream!).
In his studio, a group of creatives work together on art, architecture and interior projects and products. Not to be captured within one genre, except for the style perhaps. The craftsmen/designers first start by making sketches and models in the workshop, and then combine various techniques.

Author Herman Kerkdijk wrote this book as a quest for what makes Eindhoven so special in terms of spatial appearance, in the past, present and future. He wonders whether all the super plans will create an urban identity with an Eindhoven character. He calls that character unconventional and open in nature. Will residents and newcomers recognize themselves in these plans? Eindhoven is a city of experiment and imagination, vibrating for young and old and made for all speeds. Will that idea remain?
An urban identity in which the mix of Eindhoven stone and the Brabant landscape coincide with special buildings such as Lichttoren, Evoluon, Blob and the like.
Eindhoven Variomatic • price € 30,-.

‘The
natural surroundings of the Kempen invite you to enjoy life in peace’
Gerard van Maasakkers once said; ‘The people of Brabant are not linear like the people of the North, no, the people of Brabant are like their landscape, they meander through life.’ That applies to many in these regions. And the newcomers? They can’t help but join in, they meander along nicely. Beerze Brewery embraces exactly such a typical Brabant lifestyle. The route to it through the Brabant Kempen feels like a breath of fresh air. Meandering along the country roads you feel the hustle and bustle slip away from you. On the village square of Vessem, this brewery welcomes you with open arms (since 1716). Here, beer is brewed with pure, local ingredients. The brewery has been expanded over time with an inn, terrace, hotel, meeting and party rooms and a beautiful garden where it is nice to stay when the weather is nice.

I have been catching myself worrying more and more lately. I am sitting on the terrace, apparently carefree in the sun enjoying a nice cup of coffee and good company. But deep down I am worried. A nice evening at the theatre, with a gnawing feeling in my stomach. How can I not worry when the news reports bring one threatening message after another? In recent years we have been bombarded with crises. Climate crisis, education crisis, housing crisis, energy crisis, economic crisis. Now there is also a threat from abroad. We seem to have to prepare ourselves for something very intense that may or may not come. Studio040 made a report in which young people were asked if they would fight for the safety of the Netherlands. Is this the new reality? Should we start having these conversations with our children?
While I am walking through the neighbourhood outwardly untroubled, a shopkeeper hands me a laminated note. A smiley face is drawn on it and a text written on it. ‘This smile is for you. Because a sweet smile fills everyone’s heart. You can keep it, pass it on or hang it up somewhere for a passer-by. The idea here is to make people aware that a little attention can mean a lot to someone.’
How heartwarming! Despite the misery that is being dumped on us via the news, someone has found a constructive way, no matter how small the act may seem, to mean something positive to random people in the city. It seems like a small gesture, but I think it is a heroic act. This makes me think about my own role, what I could do. Making something with my hands is not really my thing. The only thing I used to excel in with manual skills was papier mâché, and even that is not something in which I have enough talent to make works of art out of it. Ramadan has now started for me. A time of reflection and prayer. Let me do that. Pray for our safety and that of our children. May this prayer, together with each of our positive acts, hang over us like a protective blanket. Amen!

At the beginning of March, you could bring your heirlooms and curiosities to the valuation afternoon of Soroptimistclub Helmond-Peelland and Museum Klok & Peelfor an expert valuation. A sale yielded €2,025 for projects that support vulnerable women and girls in the region. Seven valuers voluntarily assessed the objects brought along and a restorer gave advice on the restoration of art on the spot.
‘Thanks to everyone’s efforts, we can really make a difference,’ sayschairman Maartje Vos-Swinkels.

This summer, Eindhoven Zoo will welcome a special new species: golden takins! It is the only zoo in the Netherlands where these powerful, ungulate mountain animals from the Himalayas can be seen. They are known for their climbing skills and striking golden fur. ‘Their robust build and unique behaviour make them a real public favourite,’ says head keeper Stephan Rijnen. ‘A fascinating addition. The new, rocky 2100 m² takin enclosure will open this summer, in addition to a new enclosure for red pandas.

FROM EXPAT TO DUTCH CITIZEN – A 15-YEAR JOURNEY OF CHANGE, GROWTH
‘‘Time passed and the excitement faded. The cold, gloomy weather and the food, so different from what I knew back home, were not satisfying. I felt isolated as I realised that the Dutch often organise their social lives around family, and I had a hard time finding my place. The routine of commuting from my home to the office became monotonous and the quiet, structured way of life felt oppressive. After three years I was ready to go home, I wanted to leave it all behind. But life can surprise you. I decided to persevere and found stability. We bought our own house which gave us a sense of permanence. Our two daughters were born and our little family settled into life in the Netherlands. Something changed inside me. I was no longer just an expat, I was building a life, a new identity.’
‘My marriage ended in divorce. I started afresh, but this time on my own terms. Driven by a passion to help others, I started my own business as a Professional Home Organizer, specifically for working mothers, to create more balance in their lives. I wanted to show them how to live with less stress and more harmony. I discovered how much I need to connect with others in my community, something I had been craving since those lonely early years in the Netherlands.’
‘Then I found Burst Your Bubble, an initiative that allowed me to meet like-minded people and expand my network beyond my own small circle. Attending these events became a turning point in my life. I was able to meet people who weren’t afraid to share their stories, who were open and kind, without judgement or negativity. Every event left me refreshed and inspired, armed with fresh insights and new connections.’ ‘Exactly the intention’, says Ineke Hurkmans, founder of Jump Movement and Burst your Bubble. ‘Chaiwen shows how Burst your Bubble can give you a shift and broaden your perspective.’
‘Excited and full of hope’. Fifteen years ago, Chaiwen Lee left her home in Taiwan, ready for a new adventure. Her Taiwanese employer sent her and her then husband, of Spanish descent, to the Netherlands. ‘It felt like a dream: a fresh start in a new country, surrounded by new faces, cultures and endless possibilities.’ Yet it was only with Burst your Bubble that she started to feel at home in Eindhoven. There she found like-minded people and her story grew into a life full of resilience, growth and connection.
‘Now, after 15 years of living in the Netherlands, I no longer feel like an outsider. I have learned to embrace the culture, the language and the people. The country that once felt so foreign to me has become my home. What started as an uncertain chapter in my life has grown into a story of resilience, growth and connection.’
‘Every day I help others navigate their own journey. I support those who, like me once upon a time, may not feel completely at home in the Netherlands. My business and the friendships I have built taught me that life is about finding your place. Sometimes that means stepping out of your comfort zone to connect with others and bursting your own bubble.’
With social experiments in the Eindhoven region, Burst your Bubble connects internationals & locals. Eindless collects the stories that emerge from this. Together they let you look at the city and its inhabitants in a new way, so that you see for yourself opportunities to learn more, make contacts and contribute to an inclusive city where everyone is welcome. Burst your Bubble is a method of the Jump Movement Foundation developed by Ineke Hurkmans. Eindless is a publication of the Uit in Eindhoven foundation.

Idul Fitri, or the Indonesian Sugar Festival, is one of the most important holidays in Indonesia and marks the end of Ramadan. It is celebrated with family and of course delicious food. In the Netherlands too, prayer services are held and people come together to party, during which the halal bihalal takes place: a moment to ask forgiveness and to give each other good wishes for the coming year. A popular delicacy is Lapis Legit, a layer cake with dozens of thin layers and a rich, spicy taste. This symbolizes prosperity and hospitality.
Beat 10 egg yolks with 200 grams of sugar until fluffy, add 250 grams of butter and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix 150 grams of flour and 2 teaspoons of speculaas spices and add to the batter.
Beat all the egg whites until stiff and fold in. Pour a thin layer of batter into a greased baking tin and bake for 2-3 minutes under the grill. Repeat until the batter is used up, layer by layer.
In the Netherlands, an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 people belonging to the Indonesian and Indonesian-Dutch community celebrate Idul Fitri.
Let cool, cut into slices and enjoy!
Selamat Idul Fitri, semoga manisnya berkah melimpah!*
Other dishes
Lapis Legit can also be called sweet layers of tradition. Other dishes during Idul Fitri are Ketupat (woven rice parcels in palm leaf). Rendang (slowly braised beef in coconut milk & spices). Opor Ayam (chicken in coconut milk) and Kue Nastar (pineapple cookies)
*Blessed Idul Fitri, may the sweetness bring abundant blessings!
