Smart culture for high yield
November. In an environment that breathes innovation and where we get high on tech, but where cultural organisations and individuals also struggle with a different reality. Because politics forces us to make compromises, culture comes to a standstill or work is denied. As if the value of culture can be measured in returns.
This month’s agenda proves loud and clear that culture is alive and indispensable. From the powerful stories on the stages and in rooms, to the nominations for the Eindhoven Culture Prize with which Hildegard Hick, Tarek Bestha, Bart van Dongen, Basta, Kelderman and Van Noort, Frino, Oortwolk, Queer040 and the visual mastery of Studio Giftig make the power of creative expression felt. So, What’s Next and TROMP provide international allure and at the TU/e Havelok uses percussion to show how music and technology can reinforce each other. We celebrate cultural diversity with Merhaba Eindhoven, where Turkish culture is central, and enjoy when Dimitri Verhulst discusses his novel Bechamel Mucho.
De Jong Cultuur Weekends are bursting at the seams with new experiments and give generation Z the space to shine, while students from DAE and SintLucas study design and innovation openly in The Classroom in de Heuvel.
November. The central heating boilers are switched on and culture flows through the streets, even in the middle of the shopping throughfares. Let’s join Helmond Alderman, Martijn de Kort, and take steps towards a future in which housing, food, education and personal growth are in order for everyone in the region. Culture is not a luxury, but the “smart meter” that nourishes and connects. Tell, create, and express yourself, especially when it’s difficult. Because it’s the stories, the art, and the voices of our time that shape the future, and for a much higher return than politics would ever think conceivable.

The abrasive conversation
Loubna Bakra
Making connections, finding a niche, bringing things together and lighting the fire: for Loubna Bakra, policy starts in the middle of practice. As a community builder in Woensel West and Community Librarian in Woensel Zuid, Loubna works with Tante Netty, Stichting Ik wil, Stichting 18 September and Bibliotoop Woensel Zuid - and the community can be so happy about that!
‘I must share something with you. In recent years, I have noticed more and more often that we have become more afraid of a real conversation. In reality, I mean a conversation with people who have a completely different perspective, with people who have a different outlook on life. A conversation in which we are open to a possible change of perspective. We noticed that, for example, during the corona pandemic, but I won’t elaborate too much on that, as I am happy that the time of a curfew and the arguments about whether or not to vaccinate is fortunately behind us. There are still plenty of other topics left. From (systemic) racism to climate crisis, housing shortage, refugees. All difficult topics where opinions differ, and emotions run high. Last year, the war in the Middle East was added.
The Israel/Palestine conflict, as it is also called. Conflicts between students and university boards, insecurity in the workplace and, above all, a lot of caution among many people about making these topics a point of discussion.
From my work as a community builder, I know that for a close-knit community, you also have to be able to have painful conversations with each other every now and then. To really be there for each other, you need to understand the perspective of others. I am so happy that I can play a small, meaningful role in this through my work, a link that tries to bring the different worlds together and can see how you can craft a translation between those worlds. And yes, this is quite a challenge. But it is allowed. In fact, it is necessary. When it starts to get uncomfortable, you know you have touched something essential.”
Theatre can also be a great way to start a conversation and show a different perspective. On 25 and 26 November I will be playing in Hotel de Wereld in Pand P together with Jacques Offenbach. The subject: Israel/Palestine. Is this difficult? Absolutely! Painful? You bet! Is this necessary? 100%! As afraid as I was of losing our friendship, it has, in all caution, brought us closer together. It was worth it. How wonderful it would be if we had the abrasive conversations with each other more often, to bring us as Eindhoven residents closer together. Without friction, no shine!

Van Gogh painting to Noord Brabants Museum
The Noordbrabants Museum has successfully purchased the painting Head of a Woman by Vincent van Gogh for €8.6 million.
This work of art, painted in 1885, was part of private collections for a long time and was auctioned in 2023. Thanks to a fundraising campaign with contributions from around 3,000 donors and support from other funds and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the museum collected sufficient to purchase the work. The woman in the painting, farmer’s daughter Gordina de Groot from Nuenen, is jokingly called the ‘Mona Lisa of Brabant’. The museum wants the painting to tour other Brabant museums.

13 locations GGZ Eindhoven and De Kempen officially ‘Te Gek Groen’
Nature as an integral part of care, putting well-being and recovery for clients and care workers central.
On International Mental Health Day, thirteen mental health institutions in the Brainport region were named ‘Te Gek Groen’ Icon Locations and awarded the Green GGZ logo. IVN Nature Education and Nature For Health aim to boost clients’ mental health by adding greenery to care spaces, as studies show green areas reduce stress and enhance focus. A nearly €2 million grant from the National Postcode Lottery will fund the ‘Te Gek Groen’ program, benefiting clients, employees, and local residents with bio-diverse, inspiring environments.
Shortlist 2024
And the nominees
The Eindhoven Culture Prize Jury consists of five people with different backgrounds: Chair Yasin Torunoglu (former Alderman Eindhoven), Iris Penning (Musician & Poet), Tom Loois (Curator & Concept Designer), Leontine Heuvelmans (owner Vielgut) and Mark van Rijt (Director Private
Banking ING Bank). Here they present the nominees for the Eindhoven Culture Prize 2024.
Incentive Award
For the nominations for the Incentive Award, initiatives have been selected that are not yet prominent in the Eindhoven cultural field but are promising and have growth potential. Which initiatives are a great promise for the city?
Frino
Frino consists of two theatre creators/musicians who do not deny their roots but embrace them. Known for their innovative and groundbreaking approach to hip hop and spoken word, Frino knows how to connect youth culture in the city with the broader cultural sector in a unique way. With their Brabant lyrics, they reflect on what it means to be from Brabant. And they don’t only do that in Brabant. They craft theatre nationally and are therefore ambassadors for the Eindhoven region. They show that they are proud to be from Eindhoven. What sets Frino apart is their ability to make art and culture accessible to everyone, regardless of background or experience. They are unique - there is no other act like them.
Oortwolk
Oortwolk is a relatively new initiative but has quickly grown into an indispensable player in the Eindhoven theatre landscape. Last year, the jury was impressed by the milestones that this company has managed to achieve in such a short time. This year, they have not been idle and have created wonderful performances and, in addition to many children, they have also reached adults. The jury appreciates the organization’s efforts and dedication and the subjects that they bring to young people’s attention. In this way, they teach young children to deal with emotions. What makes Oortwolk special is their ability to make art accessible to a wide audience, without sacrificing artistic depth.
Queer040
Queer040 is an influential organisation that plays a pivotal role in promoting inclusivity and visibility within the Eindhoven LGBTQIA+ community. Through their diverse activities and events, Queer040 offers a safe and supportive space where people of different sexual orientations and gender identities can come together, be themselves, and share their stories. They convey their clear social vision through their cultural activities. Queer040 is not only a social network, but also a powerful platform for cultural expression and activism. Their events, including parties, film screenings, and discussion evenings, are crucial for creating awareness and promoting acceptance within and beyond the LGBTQIA+ community. They are also committed to educating children, in which self-acceptance plays a major role.

EINDHOVEN CULTURAL AWARDS
The Incentive Award focuses on initiatives that do not yet play a major role but show a lot of potential, such as their innovative approach, connection with local culture and social relevance. The Organization Appreciation Award recognises established organisations that make culture accessible to a wide audience and act as a connecting factor within the city.
The Individual Appreciation Award honours individuals who make a major artistic and social contribution to the city with their unique artistic vision and long-term commitment. These nominations have been selected for their distinctive qualities and impact. Each initiative, organisation or individual has been shortlisted for their innovative strength, social contribution and ability to boost and further develop the cultural identity of Eindhoven.
Organization Appreciation Award
The nominations for the Organization Appreciation Award are parties that we can be proud of in Eindhoven. As a connecting factor, they ensure that art and culture can be experienced with ease and make them more accessible to all residents.
Basta Toneel
Basta Toneel is an enthusiastic group of volunteers who like to create theatre together as an amateur association. They produce theatre within this company from every age category and have been a household name in Eindhoven for more than thirty years. The company distinguishes itself by connecting different target groups with each other: young or old, everyone is welcome. The organisation makes acting so accessible that everyone wants to go on stage and develop themselves. It is an extremely sympathetic initiative, with a unique function in the cultural landscape where everyone has a place on stage. In this way they distinguish themselves from other theatre companies in Eindhoven.
Studio Giftig
Studio Giftig is a groundbreaking artist duo that have enriched the urban art scene in Eindhoven and other cities. Known for their beautiful murals and visually challenging artworks, they leave an unmistakable mark on the public space in this city. Their murals are not just decorative additions to the cityscape, but powerful works of art that tell stories and invite people to reflect on the world around them. By making art accessible in public spaces, they know how to reach and inspire art lovers and passers-by. The buildings that display their works are used as ideal locations for a good conversation. Studio Giftig enriches Eindhoven’s visual landscape, brings art into the daily lives of residents and strengthens the cultural identity of the city.
Kelderman en Van Noort
Kelderman en Van Noort is a meeting point with a café/restaurant, studios and exhibition space. The space that is given to (young) creators and organisations and the attention to street culture makes KEVN a valuable addition to the artistic infrastructure of the city. The jury was impressed by this organisation last year and the initiative has not stood still since. An ever-expanding cultural programme is being worked on in which different things are constantly happening. Every club is welcome. With this, KEVN has been given a connecting role and they are diverse, inclusive and function as an important connecting factor in the neighbourhood. In this way, they also ensure that people encounter art and culture in an accessible way.

Individual Appreciation Award
In this category, the jury paid attention to the artistic value of the individual’s work. In what ways do these creators enrich the city and contribute to cultural development?
Hildegard Hick
Hildegard Hick is a special photographer. Her work is very recognisable and she has her own unique style. She produces beautiful works and can take the viewer along in everyday images that appeal to the imagination. Her book about Eindhoven during the pandemic is impressive and takes us back to this bizarre time with silent images. In addition to her own work, she wants to share her special view of the environment with others, and she organises workshops for young and old. In these workshops she inspires others to look in a different way. She also emphasises that everyone can take pictures - you don’t need good equipment, you can also take beautiful pictures with your phone. Through her stories and dedication, she creates various new, refreshing views of the world. As an audience we are grateful that we get a glimpse into this world. She uses Eindhoven as a source of inspiration and her images are time documents that teach us more about who we are.
Tarek Beshta
Tarek Beshta is a modest artist from Eindhoven who creates beautiful works. His unique work makes him very special. The jury was deeply impressed by the work and the emotions that can be felt, and instantly indicated that this visual artist really should be on the shortlist. What is striking is that he creates incredibly diverse works, but that the hand of the artist always remains recognisable. And that is incredibly clever and special. He has been working hard for years and is currently fully committed to his work. Something that the jury can only encourage. Tarek Beshta creates work that you cannot ignore and that we in Eindhoven can be proud of. It is time that this artist got more attention, because he deserves it.
Bart van Dongen
Bart van Dongen Bart van Dongen is a remarkable musician in the Dutch music and art scene and the driving force behind Paviljoen Ongehoorde Muziek in Eindhoven. With his inexhaustible passion for experimental music and sound art, he has transformed the pavilion into a breeding ground for innovative musical creations and groundbreaking art forms. Bart’s sharp artistic vision and ability to create unique musical experiences have put POM on the map as a centre for cultural innovation. He knows how to bring artists and audiences together in a special way, providing a platform where new sounds and ideas can flourish. Without his tireless years of dedication, we would not be able to enjoy these unique sounds.
AGENDA
This fall, there’s so much to experience in the city - from music, theater, and dance to exhibitions and events.
SAT 9 & SUN 10 NOVEMBER
PARKTHEATER EINDHOVEN | SAT 21:20 & SUN 14:30 | VISUAL THEATER Horror
Prepare for a breathtaking evening full of suspense, mystery, and dark magic! Jakop Ahlbom creates a magical world in Horror, which is a rare experience in theater. Ten years ago, he decided to translate the cinematic effects of horror to the stage, and since then, the show has touched over 200,000 viewers worldwide. Now, this audience favorite is coming back to Eindhoven!
An old house is haunted by a tragic family history. The youngest sister has escaped, but what happened to the eldest sister? Years later, she returns to her childhood home and is confronted with a hidden past. The only way to survive is to face the horrifying truth.
Let’s talk about US & us
From November 1 to 15, Parktheater is organizing the theater festival Let’s talk about US & us. On the eve of the American elections, this festival reflects on the influence of America on our daily lives.
In 2024, the Netherlands celebrates 80 years of freedom, a fitting time to reflect on the meaning of freedom and security, as well as the impact of the U.S. elections. During this outspoken theater festival, Parktheater delves deeper into the land of limitless possibilities.
With an interactive program, Parktheater aims to break down stereotypes and combat fake news, while attempting to bridge the gap between our continents. The festival kicks off with Koning Krump by Het NUT and comedian Greg Shapiro (Boom Chicago, Comedy Central). After the opening, there will be a wide variety of performances, dialogue tables, workshops, and an exhibition by visual storyteller Rogier Klomp (Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, VPRO Tegenlicht). Before the lecture by Boekestijn and de Wijk and Maarten van Rossem, a (Fast-) Food for Thought will be organized. Get ready and enjoy (h)onest fast food while host Steye van Dam presents the Witte-wel-witte-nie-USA quiz PARKTHEATER
Jakop Ahlbom’s Horror allows the audience to enjoy absurd fantasies, black humor, and surreal images that are both fascinating and terrifying. The show received four-star reviews from NRC, Trouw, De Volkskrant, and Het Parool. PARKTHEATER EINDHOVEN | 20:00 | CABARET
THINX premières
Eindhoven-based theater maker Salman Dirir is affiliated with THINX, an initiative through which Parktheater supports theater talent on their journey to becoming independent creators. Salman’s work combines film, dance, and music, and draws on his Somali roots. His project RUUN, meaning “truth” in Somali, continuously explores his personal truths. This ongoing artistic and personal investigation focuses on redefining, questioning, and examining what truth means to each of us individually.
Eindhoven-based creators Carmen Verduyn and Terence ‘Machete’ van Lange are also part of THINX. Both are spoken word artists and are actively involved in the urban scene in Eindhoven. They create the performance Verworpen Onderwerpen
On June 20, 2024, Freek de Jonge presented his new book De Zeeuwse Jaren at the Haarlemse Schouwburg, exactly 55 years after the premiere of Neerlands Hoop at the same location. What began as a book presentation turned into a spontaneous performance where the cabaret artist, with his sharp humor and topical references, surprised the audience.
Some attendees remarked that it felt like “the old Freek” was back. That evening gave the 80-year-old Freek the confidence to continue with a previously canceled tour in an adapted form. His show Peace on Earth is now coming to Eindhoven! Freek reflects on life and the year that has passed, of course, sprinkled with his characteristic humor and razor-sharp observations. Don’t miss it, as this is a unique opportunity to see the master storyteller live.

A love for funk, disco, and afrobeat brought the men of Cavolo Nero together. The psychedelic groove band is known for its energetic music and performances. In 2022, they released their debut EP and toured across the Netherlands with Popronde – a solid kickstart to national recognition. Their thunderous performance at Eurosonic was the real breakthrough, after which their schedule quickly filled up with festival shows. Tonight, they swap the big festivals for the intimate club setting of M during Kaleidoscope. You’re guaranteed a danceable evening with this six-piece band!

In 2021, she broke through with her debut album ‘Black Acid Soul’, where her powerful, smoky voice truly shines. In September, she released her followup, ‘Slang Spirituals’, her most personal work to date, which she will perform tonight at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven! SAT 30 NOVEMBER

Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest
Vijf sterren – meer is niet mogelijk – was what de Volkskrant awarded to Lahav Shani’s Mahler 2 with his Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Last season, the orchestra was also unforgettable at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. ‘…you then notice how effective Shani’s dynamics are and how sublimely the enormous RPhO responds to him,’ wrote the reviewer, deeply impressed by this experience. At the tail end of this Bruckner Year 2024 (Bruckner was born two hundred years ago), Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, together with Shani and his Rotterdam players, celebrates this ‘composer of monumental structures’.

Based on their book ‘Pearls in the shit’, they will discuss the shit in their lives - and how they deal with it - during this lecture. And there are surprisingly many similarities in that. Because whether you are sick or healthy: time is precious. Negative thoughts can run away with you. And you have to accept that you can’t control everything.

The Eindhoven School
Saskia De Maree, Aagje Linssen, Aaron van Erp and Jeroen Vrijsen
Is there such a thing as Eindhoven painting? The painters Saskia De Maree, Aagje Linssen, Aaron van Erp, and Jeroen Vrijsen believe there is. That’s why they established De Eindhovense School in 2022. According to the founders, the painting from this city is bourgeois, free, and sensual, and it moves in the tension between figuration and abstraction. The materiality and earthiness contrast with the image of Eindhoven as a design and technology city.
On Saturday, November 9, starting at 15:00, the opening will showcase the work of these four painters at Tarwelaan 56 in Eindhoven.

However, toy manufacturer Dominicus Duff is back and is opposed to the plans of these five creators. The creators of the films, in collaboration with BazarMedia, bring this brand-new Dutch family musical.
Jong Cultuur Eindhoven, one of the talents:
LIOBA BENOLD
‘To bring people together across mental, technological and political obstacles, we need new ways of coming together. My curiosity about social ecology, from a fleeting encounter to a large institution, knows no bounds.’ Keukenconfessies’ Maarten Lockefeer did not have to think long about his nomination for young cultural talent. According to him, Lioba Benold, social designer and fashion designer, who is committed to a safe nightlife for the FLINTA* community, absolutely deserves this stage.
Who are you and where are you from? ‘My name is Lioba Benold, born in 1996, I have German parents and grew up in Veneto, Northern Italy - on the border of both German and Italian culture. I am a social fashion designer who is mainly interested in nightlife.’
Generation Z is known as digitally skilled, socially aware, resilient. Which word suits you best? ‘I was born exactly between Gen Y and Gen Z, never really delved into these classifications and their meaning for my personal life and upbringing. ‘Socially aware’ suits me best.’
What do you do? ‘After graduating from the Design Academy, Eindhoven, I am now developing as an independent social designer with a fashion design twist. My focus is on safe nightlife experiences, such as with my event series Bacchanalia. You don’t need heavy security and consumerism to build community at night.’
Artistic motivation ‘I am impressed by simple but powerful projects, such as the Teeter-Totter Wall. It symbolizes the connection between Mexico and the US and shows how design can speak directly to a wider audience. My motivation comes from my experiences of nightlife, from the intense connection in Venice to the individual focus in Hamburg. I want to create spaces where people care for each other. In my little workshop space, I see myself casting vases and making bags – that’s my ‘guilty pleasure!’’
Lioba in the future
‘I want to promote a more inclusive design field, especially for the FLINTA community. My biggest dream is a PhD in Design, with the ambition to change the fashion industry and ensure more gender equality.’
Eindhoven’s Jong Cultuur contributors are jointly organising unique cultural activities until February 2025, from workshops and exhibitions to performing arts & performances, tours and meetings. Sweet apples & stuffed dates
World Dishes for Peace
Jewish and Palestinian dishes often share the same ingredients and symbols. In November, while Jewish families prepare for Hanukkah and the winter months approach, we can use these dishes as a symbol of warmth, community, understanding, and reconciliation between different cultures.
Apples with honey Preparing for Hanukkah (December)
Ingredients apples honey
Apples with honey are traditionally eaten during Rosh Hashanah. Also, in the lead-up to Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights in December, they offer a moment of reflection and sweetness.
Shana Tova!
Stuffed dates á la Jom Kipoer
Ingredients dates chopped nuts honey
Stuff dates with chopped nuts and drizzle with honey. After Yom Kippur in October, this symbol of reconciliation remains powerful, especially during this time of preparation for Hanukkah.

Burst your Bubble
The story is about sustainable connections - how great and disarming it is to see that people are happy with the match. That an immediate smile appears when someone invites another person to do something.
Ineke Hurkmans, founder of the Jump Movement: ‘We now know that 60% of the proposed activities take place, and that it leads to more. For example, there were Yukako and Nienke who found each other for a walk in the park, and then met up with both their families for lunch. Sustainable connections start with the first small invitation.’
Yokako: ‘I am very happy to get to know them, as I am in the Netherlands and have many opportunities to get to know other foreigners, but not so many opportunities to meet Dutch people.
It made me feel that I live in the Netherlands and am connected to the local community in Eindhoven. At the Bubble invitation draw, I took Nienke’s invitation for a walk in the park. We took this walk with her lovely daughter and her dog. Her daughter was waiting for me with a handmade welcome card! Afterwards, we had a drink together in her pleasant garden. We talked about each other’s culture, life, work, food etc. It was nice to get to know each other better’.
Yukako Tominaga
At this Burst your Bubble evening, each participant received a card upon arrival with the text: ‘I would love to ... with you’. What is written down varies from drinking a cup of coffee, to painting together, walking, walking the dog, eating or taking a ride on the motorbike. Yukako and Nienke went to the park together.
It starts with a small gesture. A card in your new neighbour’s mailbox. Because let’s be honest, how nice is it to receive a written card when you are new (or still unknown) in a neighbourhood?
Suggestions to put on your card: ‘
‘Welcome to our neighbourhood, please ring the doorbell for a cup of sugar’
‘I saw you walking and would like to welcome you to our street. We live here together and it’s great that you’re here’
‘This card is good for a cup of coffee at number #’
‘Welcome, how nice that you’re here’
‘Gezellig, is a typical Dutch word. We’d like you to experience what that means. You’re welcome to drop in to number #’
With social experiments in the Eindhoven region, Burst your Bubble connects internationals & locals. Eindless collects the stories that emerge from this. Together they let you view the city and its inhabitants in a new way, so that you see opportunities to learn more, make contacts and contribute to an inclusive city where everyone is welcome. Burst your Bubble is a Jump Movement Foundation initiative. Eindless is an Uit in Eindhoven Foundation publication.
BETWEEN CULTURES: ZUID-AFRIKA
‘You could have superfoods right on your doorstep!’ Nicole Cullinan
Nicole is an author and lifestyle coach who practices functional medicine and classical homeopathy. She completed her master’s degree in homeopathy in South Africa and built a successful private practice in Johannesburg over 15 years before moving to the Netherlands in 2016. They migrated because of job opportunities for her husband and their European roots to give their family opportunities, security, and a better life.
Nicole offers holistic consultations in Blixembosch, nature walks, and workshops. Her approach is ideally suited to those wanting to take their health into their own hands and looking for evidence-based yet alternative solutions.
How do you describe yourself?
I see myself as a bridge between alternative and conventional medicine paradigms. I help people with a range of chronic conditions, especially autoimmune diseases, gut issues, hormonal problems, and mental health challenges. When more lateral and in-depth investigations are needed, I facilitate private testing and interpretation of functional biomarkers and epigenetic test reports. This is by no means a conventional medical package but rather a parallel one, a highly personalized and truly preventative model of health creation that addresses the root causes of illness and offers practical, empathetic support and nature-based solutions.
How did your Plant Safari project come about?
I was struggling to adapt to life here. My survival instinct and intuition led me to create a daily ritual of walking my dog in the forest, and it was then that I started to notice the plants. I felt like I was on safari but spotting wild plants. This regular, mindful connection with nature and the wisdom and ingenuity in plants started a personal healing journey. That unearthed my creativity and culminated in my Wild Seasons book series. It has been so vital that I share this information with others, so I created a series of nature walks and workshops to build a like-minded, nature-loving community.
We walk in the Aanschotse Beemden, and I teach the participants to identify and give names to the plants they encounter. We understand the toxic and endangered species and general foraging know-how. Sadly, we are not allowed to forage because of the vulnerable state of the ecosystem. My walks encourage learning to spot plants in their natural habitat, allowing them to flourish, and planting your wild patch in your garden or balcony to harvest ethically. Nevertheless, everyone is always surprised by the wealth of edible and medicinal plants that grow like weeds along paths and in peri-urban green spaces. I always end with a seasonal herbal tea and snack inspired by nature.
What is your opinion about our ecosystem?
We are interconnected with nature and are part of it. The first thing I felt was how sterile even the most biodiverse and wild spots are compared to South Africa. When nature outside suffers, so does our inner ecosystem or microbiome and health. I want to promote awareness about living more in reverence for and connection with our environment through conscious and
mindful lifestyle and nutrition choices. We can adopt many practices to support our local ecosystem and improve its biodiversity, which environmentalists and other experts recommend. We need to focus on our local ecosystem as much as possible because the remedies for our illnesses and maladies often lie around us, such as the plants and weeds in our immediate environment. You could have superfoods growing on your doorstep!
Please tell us about your books and why seasons are essential for you. I was captivated by the changing natural environment and how the seasons were like distinct artistic entities with their palette of colors. My books outline a holistic philosophy that uses the seasons as a metaphor for healthy living and honors nature’s intelligence and life cycles. It helped me deal with change and transition by aligning my lifestyle and diet with the different rhythms and conditions outside of me. I found more acceptance and am still learning the value of going with its flow and harnessing its power instead of going against it. I think they would interest all those living in Brabant and beyond who want to get out and experience nature and need a field guide to learn about local plants, their medicinal uses, and creative food recipes. There is a time for everything in this circular economy of nature and life. The paperback edition is available to purchase at Boekhandel van Piere in Eindhoven.
How has your relationship with nature changed since you have lived in the Netherlands?
Wherever I go, I notice nature and plants, as if through a constant filter. In South Africa, I loved nature but felt unable to enjoy it freely due to safety concerns. Here, though the landscapes differ, I now have the freedom to explore, and I’m inspired by resilient “weeds” that thrive despite challenges, much like me as an expat. Walking through forests and dunes, I feel a deep connection, finding comfort and understanding in nature through life’s transitions. This bond with the Dutch landscape feels like it’s in my DNA, supporting my health and well-being.
What wild plant do you like most, and how do you use it?
I love the Beach rose (Rimpelroos in Dutch). An exotic plant from the east that is widely planted along roads and paths. The rose hips are extremely rich in Vitamin C, and I use them fresh as a puree or tea and dried and powdered in smoothies or a variation of Za ‘atar. Perfect for boosting your immune system. I use the edible petals as a garnish on desserts, tea, or a rose cordial and jam.

ABOUT SOUTH AFRICA
The South African community in Eindhoven contributes to the city’s cultural diversity through activities like culinary events, “braai” gatherings, and sports such as rugby. They maintain their language and culture with book clubs and social groups, celebrating national holidays like Freedom Day. Musical performances and cultural exchanges enrich city life and strengthen the connection to South African heritage within the local community. These activities promote integration and cultural exchange while celebrating South African identity.
Of the 10,000 to 15,000 expats, students, and individuals with South African roots in the Netherlands, around 1,000 live in Eindhoven and its surrounding areas.
Mart
ijn de Kort
Philosopher John Rawls’ concept of the veil of ignorance’, which basically challenges individuals to design a fair society without knowing their own social or economic status, has profoundly influenced Martijn de Kort, Alderman of Helmond. For Martijn, the answer is clear: everyone should have access to basic human rights such as housing, food, education, and opportunities for personal growth. As a social democrat, he believes in balancing national solidarity with the incentives of a market economy to create a fairer society..
Growing up in Brabant, Martijn pursued International Business at Tilburg University and entered the business world as an entrepreneur. However, his interest in social issues led him into politics in 2015, and by 2022, he became the Alderman of Helmond, overseeing finance, business, and the labour market. Martijn’s political views are shaped by a deep desire to make a positive impact in his community.
When discussing the influx of internationals in the Brainport Region, Martijn underscores the vital role of regional collaboration in managing this growth. “Eindhoven can’t do it alone,” he notes, stressing the need for surrounding areas to help accommodate the influx of international talents moving to the region. With his background in economics, Martijn acknowledges the region’s inevitable economic growth, driven by large companies and their suppliers. ‘The question isn’t whether there will be growth—that’s a fact. The real policy question is how we manage that growth, both quantitatively and qualitatively.’
Martijn also acknowledges the resistance to international labour, especially from locals who face challenges like the housing crisis. ‘It’s understandable when people who have lived here their whole lives see their children struggling to find affordable housing,’ he says. However, he clarifies that international talent is not to blame for these issues. ‘The reason we have our current standard of economic welfare is because we have great companies that rely on international talent. It’s our responsibility as policymakers to ensure affordable housing for everyone.’
‘‘If you were born tomorrow, without knowing your place in the world, how would you design society?’
John Rawls

THE GLASSROOM IN THE HILL
Design in Eindhoven uphill
On Wednesday 2 October, the festive opening of The Glassroom took place at the Heuvel Gallery in Eindhoven. Under the motto-with-a-wink ‘Design in Eindhoven Bergopwaarts’, this opening marks the beginning of a sustainable collaboration between Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) and SintLucas. This new initiative combines the forces of MBO and HBO students with the aim of raising the profile of the Brainport region as a breeding ground for art, craft and design.
Forward-looking vision
With The Glassroom, DAE and SintLucas are creating a tangible space where experimentation, collaboration and creativity go hand in hand. Both institutions train their students to become creative change agents, who contribute to the social growth and transformation of the region. MBO and HBO students work side by side to offer new insights for tomorrow’s challenges.
The Glassroom is not only a place for students, but also for study-goers and the general public, who can learn about the creative sector and its future opportunities in an accessible way.
Located in the former Björn Borg shop, The Glassroom is a dynamic, inspiring space where creativity is central. Young designers can present their work here, but The Glassroom also functions as a classroom, workshop and showroom for the public.
While students take classes there, organise workshops and collaborate on projects, students, teachers and the public meet and future-oriented collaborations come about. You can walk right in and see prototypes, design becomes very accessible this way.
Room for growth and experimentation
The opening of The Glassroom not only symbolises a new chapter for the cooperation between DAE and SintLucas, but also a broader vision of the role of design in the Brainport region.
André Gehring, director SintLucas, emphasises the social value of creative thinking: ‘The question is: how can we make creativity in Eindhoven even more visible and address social issues?’ The Glassroom is the first step in a series of creative expeditions that will take place in the coming years, aimed at taking design to a higher level.
Anyone already visiting the Markt or Heuvel Gallery will see The Glassroom in full swing. In the coming weeks, students and designers will work towards a showcase for Dutch Design Week, as evidence of co-creation from which a glimpse into the future of design in Eindhoven will be given.
Students’ contribution
Besides showroom and workspace, The Glassroom offers students from both DAE and SintLucas a platform for
exploring and reflecting on each other’s work. Second-year DAE students present material studies and objects made of sheet materials, while students from SintLucas display works from their A6 course, in which they partly shape their own education. This interaction is at the heart of the collaboration between the two institutions.
Rita, a first-year DAE student, shared her experience about the creative process during the opening: ‘I started with paper and origami, and eventually I made a bag that you can wear in many ways.’ The material processing, the thinking about buttons and straps, the multifunctional use - Rita’s process illustrates the freedom and experimental space offered by the collaboration between DAE and SintLucas.
Design as an engine for growth Eindhoven is known for its thriving design sector, with over 7,000 designers accounting for a combined gross value added of €940 million. It wants to make even better use of this lead to contribute to the economic, environmental and social challenges of the future.
Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem spoke at the opening about the importance of design for Eindhoven, and announced that the municipality has freed up extra budget to further encourage design initiatives in the region. ‘I am a happy mayor. We have been through an intensive period, but The Glassroom shows that we are growing further with shared ambitions.’
Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) is a leading international design school with BA and MA programmes and is known for its hybrid, conceptual and contextual approach to design.
SintLucas is a vmbo and mbo vocational school for creativity, offering courses at the intersection of creativity, crafts and technology.
