The University of Jordan Library, UJL The University of Jordan Library, UJL, was established along with the establishment of the university in (1962). It occupies a total area of (10,500 sq m.) in addition to (4,000 sq m.) occupied by (17) sub-locations (Reading Rooms) distributed throughout the UJ campus (at the UJ faculties and scientific centers.) Access to the library including its sublocations is open to students enrolled onto different programs as well as faculty members and researchers from outside the university. The university has paid special attention to its library since its establishment by providing it with qualified technical staff and the required financial shares to enrich its holdings of print and nonprint materials1. On technical level, UJL has always been willing to adapt to technological advancements and cutting-edge issues on library and information management so as to maximize productivity and to ensure delivery of high-quality service to its clients. UJL consists of four departments comprising (12) divisions in total. The average number of library users ranges between 10,000 and 15,000 users per day. UJL opens (90 hrs) a week and offers its services to faculty members, staff members, UJ students, researches and scholars from outside the university, as well as individuals and institutions in the Arab and the foreign world at large. In (1986) UJL was accredited as a Depository Center for Theses & Dissertations2 defended at the member universities of the Arab Universities Association (AAU)3. Although long-established, UJL has paid special attention to keeping up with technological advancements and IT applications and has thus entrusted special diligence to its productivity so as to ensure optimum performance. In (2006) a new library system (Horizon, ILS) 7 was installed to replace the old one in order to operate and manage all library activities and transactions. Users can, now, access online databases in addition to the library’s union catalogue using a federated search interface namely, Horizon Information Portal, HIP. UJL has a significant archival repository that houses a valuable collection of many different items. The devices used for storage are microfilm, microfiche and other audiovisual materials 8. It has a welltrained staff that observes all processing standards, storage conditions, and handling procedures when filming. The repository provides a variety of services to the end users. Readers and printers are available on-site which allow users to read and/or print the information they need. The Archive contains an excellent range of distinct collections like: Newspapers, Periodicals, Manuscripts, Theses & Dissertations, Special Collections and Official Documents including Jordanian Legal Courts Documents). Online archiving of the library unique archive was initiated in 2010 so as to make the search process much easier, hence researchers can easily and comfortably read and get the archived material they need. 6

UJL website http://library.ju.edu.jo This website, http://library.ju.edu.jo contains all UJL services displayed in Arabic and English languages. It demonstrates full information on the library premises, branches, library’s events (workshops & seminars held at its premises), hierarchy and organizational chart, definitions, clarifications, rules & regulations in addition to detailed illustrations on library items and services. The library website http://library.ju.edu.jo links users to the library union catalogue and so users can access Horizon Information Portal, HIP, to search library holdings through one unified catalogue that integrates all Jordanian public universities’ bibliographic records to be all retrievable from one unified interface: http://ihip.jopuls.org.jo/web/ju 11. It also links users to theses & dissertations intranet webpage: http://theses.ju.edu.jo12 which allows full text/abstract access to the deposited theses and dissertations 13. However, faculty members have been given the privilege to access this database remotely (off campus access). Now, (30000)14 theses and dissertations are available online and the project will be completed in the near future. The reason why UJL has undertaken such projects, pertaining to online archiving of theses and dissertations as well as the library archive is to make it as easy, fast and efficient as possible for all users especially researchers- to retrieve the material the researcher is looking for. UJL believes that the projects’ outcomes will play a key role in knowledge dissemination which will, indeed, facilitate research process and support its progress in the country.

Library Information Management System Integrated Library System (Horizon, ILS) Based on an understanding memorandum signed by all Jordanian public universities in (2002), a consortium for managing the network of Public Jordanian university libraries was established under the name of “Jordanian Center of Excellence for Public University Library Services”. The Center attempts to manage the public university library network in Jordan and coordinate its services to achieve expenditure rationalization, information resource sharing and unifying mechanism and tools for library work among member libraries. In order to accomplish the center’s goals, library members reached a consensus on maintaining a union catalog to facilitate access to accumulative information resources available at the member libraries. Thus, Horizon, which operates as an integrated library system, was installed and implemented in (2006.) Horizon is a fully integrated client/server library management system, providing a graphical user interface for the library, and offering the functionality and standards required for an open system, including Web access, Z39.50 standard for information exchange, the TCP/IP communication standard, UNIX and Windows NT for portability. Horizon uses the SQL database management system, available from Sybase or Microsoft. It supports the Arabic version of MARC 21 which is compatible with Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules. This system provides access to the library union catalogue, which integrates all Jordanian public universities’ bibliographic records, and facilitates the search feature through Horizon Information Portal, HIP which is a smart, intelligent and organized web-based interface that allows users to search across different catalogues: local, general, and electronic resources simultaneously. Horizon is also integrated with other systems running at other administrative units (18) inside the university so that the status of any pertinent client at any unit can be easily identified. The system’s application modules (acquisition, cataloguing, circulation, serial control, inventory, binding, archiving, holding audiovisual materials, borrows’ data retrieval, depository, exchange & gifting, and reports) are all 18

integrated so as to make library transactions flow through smoothly which, in turn, saves time and efforts and ensures accuracy.

Self-Check System In Nov., 2006 a new System was implemented to improve circulation process’ efficiency. The installation of Self-Check system, which is one of the latest applications in modern library systems, allows library clients to check out materials without intervention of circulation staff. That indeed makes the check-out process easier than ever before without compromising security, and adds to users’ convenience for not having to queue. Self-Check saves time and efforts and helps circulation staff do other important tasks, which, in turn, improves the library’s overall productivity and service. According to the library’s regulations, there are a limited number of checked out materials at one time and Self-Check system applies that rule appropriately. Therefore, it doesn’t complete check-out procedure if the number of library items exceeds the quota set for the client. It also doesn’t process materials that are not allowed to be borrowed. Upon completion of check-out process, the system generates receipts of borrowed items as a proof of a successful transaction. The receipt contains: borrower’s name, titles of checked out items, and the due date of checked out items.

Circulation’s Policy 1. Books are lent to students by the university magnetic card (student ID) issued by the Deanship of Student Affairs and it should only be used by its owner. 2. Few steps to follow in order to find your book: a. Use HIP online portal http://ihip.jopuls.org.jo/web/ju to browse the online union catalogue of library holdings using one of the search options from the drop down list, b. A list of results will be displayed, click the title you want to view its details, you can print out the details page,
