UK game of the show 2015 Now in its third year, the UK game of the show award has become an important part of the gamescom experience. This much sought after accolade is awarded to the best UK developed game on show at gamescom that has not yet been released. By focusing on unreleased titles the award shines a spotlight on the games that will be making the news in the future whilst also showcasing the outstanding development talent that exists in the UK. Ukie is delighted to have Green Man Gaming as sponsors of the award this year. Green Man Gaming are huge

advocates of the UK development scene and a destination store for all the latest and greatest digital content. Paul Sulyok, Founder of Green Man Gaming, said, “We are thrilled to be supporting the UK Game of the Show at Gamescom 2015. Year on year, the quality of titles coming from the UK, and the excitement we see from consumers continues to grow and astound us. We are very proud to be championing the UK industry, and wish everyone exhibiting much success.” The judges are leading industry figures and they will be combing the halls of gamescom throughout Wednesday and Thursday to identify potential winners. The winner will be announced on the UK industry stand during the drinks reception on Thursday evening.

UK drinks receptions It is a great Ukie tradition to have two networking drinks receptions on the UK industry stand at gamescom, and this year will be no exception. Wednesday’s drinks reception has been sponsored by our fantastic partners Dovetail Games and Multiplay, and Thursday’s drinks reception has been sponsored by UKTI Germany and UKTI South

Korea. Each reception is from 6-8pm, and is open to all exhibitors, their guests, and visitors to the stand. So if you’d like to do business and network with UK and global companies, as well as have a few drinks and a chat with friends, please feel free to come along on Wednesday and Thursday. We look forward to seeing you there!

Why the UK? With over 30 years of experience of producing some of the world’s most innovative and commercially successful titles, the UK is a leader in the games industry. We give you five reasons why you should do business with the UK games sector.

1. A world class place for doing business

The UK is the number-one business location in Europe, with a games business-friendly policy, regulatory and tax environment. It offers a rich and diverse ecosystem of talented people, trade partners, tax breaks, educational establishments and suppliers. Since April 2014 we’ve had special support in place through the Video Games Tax Relief. Offering a 25% credit back on production expenditure, available to games on all platforms and of all business models, and easily claimed directly through tax returns, the tax relief has put the UK at the top of the league table for making games. The UK is also investing in its next generation of games talent. There are more than 60 UK universities providing 255 specialist courses in games, and we are preparing the next generation with worldleading reforms to computing education.

2. A reputation for innovation and creativity

The UK has a proud history of making some of the most creative and influential games ever made and remains at the forefront of the digital games market. Our companies are leading the way across many different platforms and genres, especially the spread of social,

massively multiplayer online (MMO) and mobile games.

Within the more mainstream games segment, UK-produced titles such as mobile success Monument Valley, indie classic Thomas Was Alone, as well as console blockbusters Grand Theft Auto and Batman: Arkham series have all established a reputation for genredefining originality.

3. Biggest consumer market in Europe

UK consumers spent £3.9bn on games products in 2014, growing 10% on the previous year. The UK games sector generates a further £2bn in global sales each year and contributes £1.4bn to national gross domestic product (GDP), generating £429m in tax revenues. Games revenues account for 43% of the UK entertainment market.

4. A global outlook

Overseas trade missions for UK games companies, such as GDC San Francisco, G-Star and ChinaJoy, are enabling our companies to think globally. The UK already provides the European headquarters for many global overseas games companies, including Microsoft, Sony, Konami, Take Two, Sega and many others.

5. Investment in a digital future

In addition to the UK Government’s future commitment to ensure that 90% of the UK has access to a 24Mbps internet service, games companies operating in the UK already have access to sophisticated support services for games publishing, marketing, server capacity and IT infrastructure.

Our rooms were plastered in Star Trek posters and our duvet covers were adorned with the faces of C3PO and R2D2. We were the team behind Strike Suit Zero, the first dogfighting game to ride the wave of the space combat revival. Born Ready Games was set up with the sole intention of bringing Strike Suit Zero to fruition, but – while our team and experience remains intact – our new project will fly under a new banner. Edge Case is a new studio with a new game, but we are two companies working together with common history and DNA. We are currently working on Fracture Space, a 5v5 capital ship space shooter featuring several kilometrelong behemoths duking it out on a galactic stage. With heavy ordnance flying through space, and crowds of fighters supporting the huge player craft, the battles are both tactical and explosive.
