The McConnell Center for the Study of Youth Literature McConnell Conference: Registration We hope you will join us for the 44th McConnell Conference on March 23rd– 24th, 2012, featuring M.T. Anderson, Jennifer Holm, and Lisa Desimini. M. T. Anderson has written many stories for children and young adults, including Whales on Stilts!, Jasper Dash and the Flame-Pits of Delaware, Thirsty, and The Game of Sunken Places trilogy. His young adult book Feed was a finalist for the National Book Award and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Octavian Nothing: The Pox Party won the National Book Award and the Boston Globe/Horn Book Prize, and it, along with its sequel Octavian Nothing: The Kingdom on the Waves won the Printz Award Honor. Anderson's most recent publications include Agent Q, or The Smell of Danger! and Whales on Stilts!. Jennifer L. Holm's first novel, Our Only May Amelia, was inspired by a great aunt's diary and received a 2000 Newbery Award Honor. Two more of her more recent novels, Penny from Heaven (2007) and Turtle in Paradise (2011) received
Newbery Award Honors. Holm also writes series for younger readers, such as her Babymouse series, which she coauthors/ illustrates with her brother Matthew Holm. The series has won several awards, including a 2006 ALA Notable Children's Book. Her most recent books include The Trouble with May Amelia and Squish #1: Super Amoeba.

Lisa Desimini has written ● Dear Bully Review and illustrated over thirty books for children. Her books ● On the Blog/In the Center have won several awards and honors, such as a New York ● About the Center Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year, Publisher's Weekly Best Picture Book of the Year, A BCCB Blue ribbon Book, and a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year. One of her books, Dot the Fire Dog, has been adapted to video. Her artwork has also been used for many covers, including the 1995 Newbery Award Medal Winner Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech. Desimini enjoys exploring new mediums in her artwork and has worked with oil paints, acrylic, collage, photography, and sculpture. Some of her work is a combination of all of these mediums on the computer where she draws, paints, and reshapes them into her works. Registration is now open: http://bit.ly/ptWTxp

Reviews from the Blog: Dear Bully Teens have always experienced enough adolescent angst without the added trauma of bullying, which has crossed new boundaries thanks in part to the Internet and social media. Although most of the authors for teens who contributed to this masterful anthology came of age before cyber -bullying took on a life of its own, the stories in Dear Bully are both compelling and timeless. The stories, told by 70 teen authors, not only convey the turmoil felt by those who were bullied, but also the remorseful voices of those who have committed acts of bullying. We also hear from the voices of those
who stood by while it happened and did not intervene, providing unique insights from those who were neither the victim nor the perpetrator. All of those viewpoints provide for a distinctive collection of very personal stories that will provide both teens and adults an opportunity for understanding and growth.

About the Center A vital gathering place for books and ideas, the McConnell Center is committed to identifying excellent literature for children and adolescents and to bringing this literature to the attention of those adults who have an academic, professional, career, or personal interest in connecting young readers with books. We maintain two main, noncirculating collections: Our Current Collection includes all books sent to us for review by publishers during the current year. The Permanent Collection is several collections of books maintained in the Center as a resource for students and librarians. It includes the Basic
Collection, the Award-winning Collection (Caldecott, Newbery, Printz, Morris, Pura Belpré, Sibert, and Orbis Pictus Awards), the Kentucky Collection (notable Kentucky authors and books about Kentucky), the Reference Collection, and the Periodical Collection.
