WELCOME

It has been a great joy to see UKARIA come alive again these past few months. The concert hall has regained a palpable sense of vibrancy that is matched by the exquisite and ever-changing colours of the garden. As the festival season draws to a close, exciting plans are afoot. Our architect Anton Johnson has designed a beautiful reconfiguration of our alfresco that will greatly enhance the space for dinners and lunches. Although the area will be under construction from April– September, refreshments will continue to be served in our temporary bar. You can read more about these changes – and how they’ll affect your experience – in the back of this brochure. In the meantime, there is much to look forward to. It feels particularly appropriate to welcome shakuhachi master Riley Lee and renowned koto exponent Satsuki Odamura to UKARIA for the first time as the cooler weather begins to take hold. Rainer Jozeps joins Tamara-Anna Cislowska for a guided meditation the following weekend, before Piers Lane returns from London for the complete waltzes of Chopin as the last leaves of autumn swirl in the afternoon breeze. Julian Smiles curates an all-Australian program with Dimity Hall and Bernadette Harvey in June – the perfect continuation of Kim Williams’ Incredible Floridas: Chamber Landscapes weekend in the Adelaide Festival. The debut of musical theatre star Simon Gleeson will also be a unique highlight, with Paul Kildea accompanying him on the piano in an evening of songs, stories and laughter over a two-course dinner – your only opportunity to dine with us whilst the alfresco renovations are underway. Tickets are extremely limited, so we encourage you to book early. We’re also delighted to have secured new dates for events from our 2020 Season that had to be postponed, including Richard Tognetti and Erin Helyard, and Timo-Veikko Valve and Aura Go’s cycle of the complete Beethoven Cello Sonatas. – Hoagy Carmichael (1899–1981) Since UKARIA opened its doors in 2015, Paul Grabowsky has been one of our most popular artists. He’s performed with Lior, Vince Jones, Kate Ceberano, Megan Washington, Deborah Conway, Lisa Gerrard, Paul Kelly and Archie Roach, and many of these performances have marked the beginning of collaborations that continue today. In 2014 Paul released the album Solo on ABC Jazz. This is jazz for the connoisseur: rich, engaging, full of allusion and wit. It’s also jazz at its most seductively approachable, in the tradition of Bills Evans’s Alone and Keith Jarrett’s The Melody at Night With You. In his first solo appearance at UKARIA, Paul performs many of the works from that acclaimed album, closing the set with one of the most achingly beautiful standards of all time: Hoagy Carmichael’s ‘I Get Along Without You Very Well.’

Riley Lee has been playing the shakuhachi for fifty years. In 1980 he became the first non-Japanese grand master, and since moving to Sydney from Hawaii in 1986, has been instrumental in creating a professional presence of traditional Japanese music in Australia. Riley’s request in 1988 to the Sawai Koto School in Japan that a koto player be sent to Australia facilitated the immigration of Satsuki Odamura.

Now Director of the Koto Music Institute of Australia, Satsuki has pioneered the art of teaching and performing on the koto and shamisen since her arrival in Australia. Several of Australia’s finest composers have been inspired to write for her, including Ross Edwards (Koto Dreaming) and Peter Sculthorpe (Little Requiem). Riley and Satsuki are frequent collaborators, sharing a passion for the blending of traditional and contemporary cultures, and a deep reverence for the importance of Ma, a Japanese concept that speaks of ‘the space between two notes’, a world of hidden beauty after the reverberation of each string. Together at UKARIA for the first time, Riley and Satsuki create music of profound stillness and beauty, transcending the linearity of time to find a place between transience and eternity.

In our contemporary world, silence and stillness are rare commodities: they create the necessary conditions for introspection, allowing us to commune with the starved, neglected parts of ourselves.

For the past thirty years, Rainer Jozeps has been one of Australia’s most experienced arts executives, leading organisations such as the West Australian Ballet and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, in addition to serving in numerous advisory roles. He is also a meditation practitioner and guide, with fifteen years of training in the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, and an accredited Lifeline crisis counsellor. Since winning the ABC Young Performer of the Year award at the age of fourteen, Tamara-Anna Cislowska has been a bright star in Australia’s pianistic firmament. She’s released several critically acclaimed albums with ABC Classic, including the complete works of Peter Sculthorpe (2014), the ARIA-nominated Into Silence (2017), and two hugely successful collaborations with Elena Kats-Chernin (Butterflying and Unsent Love Letters – Meditations on Erik Satie). Join Tamara and Rainer for a guided meditation through contemplative works by Brahms, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Arvo Pärt and Peteris Vasks. Before and after each piece, silence will fill the auditorium, culminating in John Cage’s 4’33” – a work known by many, mocked by some, and widely misunderstood. In a COVID-19 world, it assumes an extraordinary relevance: when experienced and shared intentionally, silence can be transcendental.

Blessed with an impeccable memory, an exquisite cantabile touch and an almost superhuman technique that makes even the most challenging repertoire look like ‘water off a duck’s back’ (Limelight), Piers Lane is one of Australia’s finest concert pianists. Few musicians in the world can rival his encyclopaedic repertoire – which exceeds over one hundred concerti – and his eclectic discography of over sixty recordings. Ahead of the Sydney International Piano Competition, Piers returns from London for this very special recital at UKARIA.

Under the artistic direction of renowned Baroque exponent Erin Helyard, this concert showcases the talents of Pinchgut Opera artists in a delightful semi-staged presentation of mini-operas. Musical theatre star Simon Gleeson is best known for his acclaimed interpretation of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, for which he received the 2015 Helpmann Award for Best Male Actor in a Musical. He has played iconic musical theatre roles including The Russian/Anatoly Karpov in Chess, Curly in Oklahoma!, and Raoul in the Australian premiere production of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Love Never Dies. Conductor, writer and pianist Paul Kildea is known as an international authority on Benjamin Britten, and recently conducted Neil Armfield’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the Adelaide Festival. Paul has been Head of Music at the Aldeburgh Festival (1992–2002), Artistic Director of Wigmore Hall (2003–05) and is currently the Artistic Director of Musica Viva Australia. Simon and Paul share a special rapport born from a mutual love of musical theatre. In this unique and very intimate UKARIA experience, you can enjoy a two-course dinner while Simon and Paul perform music from Simon’s debut album, Elements, alongside other songs for which they have a strong connection and history. Mingling composers such as Stephen Sondheim and Rogers and Hammerstein alongside the likes of Elton John and George Harrison, this concert showcases the essence of what makes Simon the acclaimed artist he is: a captivating storyteller with a rich and extraordinary voice. Music to Play for Plants is a gentle ode to the botanical world: poetic texts and tunes woven into a quiet incantation. Hildegard von Bingen, Bassano and Telemann interlaced with Hafiz and Marvell; Wisława Szymborska and Mary Oliver in conversation with Ros Bandt and Andrea Keller. Nature inspires humans in a myriad of ways. Some of today’s offerings trace a dreamy, romantic love for our environment. Others are more charged, reminding us that our role as caretakers of this miraculous planet has never been more urgent. Music to Play for Plants offers an invitation to dream and hope, looking out onto the glorious backdrop of the UKARIA gardens and the ancient Peramangk landscape beyond.

Katherine Tonkin is regarded as one of Australia’s finest theatre actors. Her extensive body of work includes productions for the Melbourne and Sydney Theatre Companies, Belvoir and Malthouse Theatres, Sydney Opera House, as well as playing to festivals both nationally and farther afield in London, Beijing, Prague and Shanghai. Genevieve Lacey is an endlessly curious artist, whose collaborations lead her down a series of uncommon paths. She brings to all her work her lyrical musicianship, her love for the natural world, and her generous connection with audiences.

Julian Smiles (cello) and Dimity Hall (violin) have been central figures in Australia’s chamber music landscape for the past three decades. Core members of the Australia Ensemble (since 1991) and the Goldner String Quartet (since 1995), they’ve performed together all around the world, made over thirty recordings on leading labels, and premiered many works by Australian and international composers. Few pianists can rival Bernadette Harvey’s authority, passion, and finesse when it comes to Australian music. Concertos and sonatas have been written for her nimble and mighty fingers, which have been described as ‘blisteringly virtuosic’ (The West Australian). Composers such as Carl Vine, Elena Kats-Chernin, Ross Edwards, Nigel Westlake and Matthew Hindson have made immeasurable contributions to our sense of national identity. The existence of their work ensures that chamber music remains a living, thriving art form – something infinitely more than a museum of sounds from a bygone age. All of the music in this program was composed within the last twenty years, offering a beautiful snapshot of the contemporary Australian sound.

Dreams and Prayers SUNDAY 20 JUNE 2.30PM

‘I had always the intuition that, in order to achieve the highest possible intensity in a performance, musicians should play, metaphorically speaking, “blind” … Blindness, then, reminded me of how to compose music as it was in the beginning: An art that springs from and relies on our ability to sing and hear, with the power to build castles of sound in our memories.’ – Osvaldo Golijov (b. 1960) Ensemble Q was born in 2015 out of a desire to create a collective of exceptional players and to provide mentoring opportunities for Australia’s finest young musicians. Under the co-artistic direction of Paul and Trish Dean, the ensemble is renowned for its dynamic programming and unique synergy, creating performances charged with electricity and excitement. Natsuko Yoshimoto returns to Adelaide to lead the ensemble in the second string quartet of Pavel Haas – From the Monkey Mountains – and Osvaldo Golijov’s The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind.

2020 This concert has been rescheduled from the 2020 Season ‘It is a quiet urgency that makes Laura Jean compelling’ – The Monthly Melbourne-born singer/songwriter Laura Jean became an indie folk sensation with the release of her debut album in 2006. Championed by Snow Patrol and Bon Iver, she went on to record with Paul Kelly, The Drones and Oh Mercy, tour with Marlon Williams, Aldous Harding, Adalita and Jenny Hval, and perform at the National Gallery of Victoria, Dark Mofo and the Sydney Town Hall. Her eponymous 2014 album was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize and described as ‘an uncompromising triumph’ by Rolling Stone. Revered for the striking beauty of her voice and the piercing immediacy of her lyrics, Laura Jean has embraced a multitude of styles, from the classicallyinspired folk of Our Swan Song, to the bright synth pop of 2018’s Devotion – a nostalgic, coastal-inspired love letter to youth gone by. Amongst the exciting emergence of a new generation of classical musicians, guitarist Andrew Blanch stands out. He’s found his own path as a soloist, winning first prize in the 2019 Adelaide International Guitar Competition and the 2015 Melbourne International Guitar Competition. His collaborators include Ariel Nurhadi (with whom he released the album Alchemy on ABC Classic in 2020), baritone José Carbó (of The Metropolitan Opera in New York), the New Zealand Guitar Quartet, and American harpist Emily Granger.

Emily grew up in Kanas City, Missouri, and is rapidly establishing herself as one of the world’s most exciting new exponents of her instrument. She’s performed as Guest Principal Harp of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, collaborated and performed with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming and Jonas Kaufmann, and is a founding member of the Chicago Harp Quartet, with whom she has released two albums. Guitar and harp is an exquisite combination that whispers its secrets only in the most intimate and transparent acoustic. Small suites by Máximo Diego Pujol and Marco Pereira bookend this concert, which also includes works by Ravel and Granados, and the premiere of a new work for the duo by Elena Kats-Chernin.

Ukrainian-Australian pianist Sonya Lifschitz is at the forefront of cross-disciplinary collaboration in Australia. Innovative and fiercely creative, Sonya re-contextualises the classical canon and pushes the boundaries of conventional concert practices.

Conceived as a reflection on the cyclical nature of life, Above / Below pairs the poetic, lyrical vignettes of Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons, Op. 37a (based on the twelve calendar months of the year) with the abstract mysticism of George Crumb’s Makrokosmos, Book I (based on the twelve signs of the zodiac). Joining Sonya is performance artist Christine Johnston (known affectionately as ‘Madame Lark’), whose uncanny ability to mimic Australian birdcalls – along with her gift for narration – has seen her appear at festivals and concerts across the country. In this concert, she’ll play the musical saw, imitate the song of the lark, and recite poetry as Sonya juxtaposes two widely divergent musical voices, allowing them to speak to each other in surprising and illuminating ways.

AUSTRALIAN STRING QUARTET

Fischer and Schumann FRIDAY 23 JULY 11.00AM

Throughout his life, Schumann penned only three string quartets, each composed quickly in 1842, his ‘year of chamber music’. The A major Op. 41 quartet – dedicated to his contemporary and friend Felix Mendelssohn – was written after an intense period studying the quartets of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Schumann’s reverence for their craft is echoed through his use of formal structure and rhythmic interplay, but the intensely pained beauty and tenderness of melody and harmony is utterly his own.


Moravian violinist and composer Pavel Fischer’s third String Quartet – the Mad Piper – takes its name from the bravery and heroism of Scottish legend Bill Millin, who led troops into battle during World War II with nothing but his bagpipes and a knife. This exhilarating quartet blends the traditions of folk and western art music with seamless ease, and draws life from the ancient tunes of Scotland and Southeast Europe to create an explosive and engaging start to this program.

Ahead of a new album release for ABC Classic, Timo-Veikko Valve joins Aura Go to perform the complete Cello Sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven. Experiencing the cycle in one day gives us an especially intimate conversation with Beethoven, meeting him at various times across his life. There is a special alchemy between the instruments in these works, the piano and cello completely equal, fully evolved partners. TICKETS There are three ways to purchase tickets at UKARIA. Online www.ukaria.com/events Our website offers the easiest and most convenient way to book tickets twenty-four hours a day. There are no booking fees. You will receive a digital copy of your tickets delivered immediately to your nominated email address to print at home or save to your smartphone. If you misplace your ticket confirmation, you can log in to your UKARIA account at any time using your email and password and reprint your tickets, and consolidate your bookings into one list if you purchased on multiple different dates.

Concessions Concessions are available for students, pensioners and health care cardholders, including seniors’ health care cardholders. Terms and Conditions Transfers and Credits Your ticket is transferable and can be given to friends or family if you are unable to attend. COVID-19 SAFET Y MEASURES UKARIA holds an SA Health approved COVID-Safe Plan enabling us to host events up to 100% of our maximum capacity, provided that all patrons wear face masks (covering mouth and nose) upon entering the concert hall foyer and auditorium. This means we can have general admission seating, and patrons can sit wherever they like. Checking In Upon arrival, we require all patrons to register their details for contact tracing. If you do not have a smartphone, or experience any issues checking in on your device, don’t panic: we will have a sign-up sheet available in the foyer where you can manually write down your details. Please see our front-of-house team in the foyer, who will be able to assist you. Seating All seats are general admission. Departure Times The bus will arrive at the corner of South Terrace and Hutt Street ninety minutes prior to the start time of the performance. Upon returning to the CBD after the event, the bus will return to the pick-up point, or drop patrons at the nearest taxi rank. How to Book There are three ways to purchase a bus fare to UKARIA.

Please fill in the detachable booking form overleaf, indicating the number of tickets required to each concert and – if applicable – the number of people requiring the bus service. Be sure to complete all the contact information details on the form to ensure we can process your order. Terms and Conditions • The cost of the ticket is a flat fee of $25 return. • We do not offer a reduced price for one-way travel. • If you arrive after the departure time and miss the bus, your concert and bus ticket are non-refundable. • Tickets for the bus service will be taken off sale seven days before the date of each applicable concert.

VENUE UKARIA Cultural Centre 119 Williams Road, Mt Barker Summit The UKARIA Cultural Centre is located just 40kms from the Adelaide CBD and is an easy drive on the South Eastern Freeway, which takes approximately 40 minutes. Take the Nairne/Bald Hills Road exit (after the Mount Barker exit). UKARIA Cultural Centre is 1km from the junction of Williams Road. Please drive slowly as Williams Road is unsealed. Once you enter the car park please observe the 20kmph speed limit. Parking There is ample parking on site and multiple entry points from the car park through the garden to the building on paved paths. Disabled Access The concert hall is wheelchair friendly. Please see a staff member before the performance and we will make sure to accommodate you. Alternatively, you can email info@ukaria.com to let us know in advance. Opening Hours UKARIA is open 90 minutes before each performance. For access outside of concert hours, please email info@ukaria.com. Seating For events presented by UKARIA, seating is unreserved. Doors to the concert hall generally open thirty minutes before the commencement of a performance. Please note events presented at UKARIA by other organisations may have allocated seating. Wi-Fi The UKARIA Cultural Centre has free Wi-Fi for guests.

ALFRESCO RENOVATIONS In response to the wonderful growth of our cultural program, our alfresco area will be reconfigured to provide a larger and more comfortable space for patrons to enjoy at all times of the year. Our architect Anton Johnson has designed the space to maintain the existing atmosphere and connection with the landscape, and truly embrace the garden and surrounding views. The space will be fully enclosed with glass sliding doors that can be opened on warm summer days and closed on cooler winter nights. A retractable glass partition will also give us the possibility to create a separate area for small dining groups, functions and preconcert talks. A polished concrete floor with in-slab heating will greatly enhance the experience for dinners and lunches. A beautiful hemlock acoustic ceiling (like the one currently used in the concert hall foyer) will reduce the ambient noise during periods of congestion and provide a seamless transition into the concert hall. In order to facilitate construction for the upgrade, the alfresco area will be closed to the public from the beginning of April until the end of September. This will have a few implications for your UKARIA experience. We greatly appreciate your understanding and flexibility. Temporary Bar: Refreshments and Afternoon Tea During construction of the new alfresco, refreshments and afternoon tea will be served in our temporary bar on the southern side of the property, adjacent to the artist’s car park and the Ngeringa vineyards. To access the temporary bar, please exit the concert hall and head towards the artist’s greenroom. Our frontof-house team will be on hand to ensure you find your way.

Toilet Access During April–September, access to the toilets will be through the concert hall foyer, adjacent to the main entrance of the auditorium, through what was formerly our staff office. There will be signage to ensure the entrance is clearly visible, and our front-of-house team will be on hand to assist you to find your way. Disabled Parking There are limited disabled parking bays along the driveway on the right of the property, however we encourage patrons who have difficulty walking up the garden paths to attend events with a friend who can drop them near the top before returning down to the main car park at the bottom of the garden. The parking bays near our alfresco (usually reserved for mobility-impaired access) will not be available from April–September. We apologise for any inconvenience.
