Conditions of Sale 1. Henry Aldridge and Son’s conditions of sale shall be construed in accordance with English law. All transactions to which these conditions of sale apply shall be governed by English Law. Henry Aldridge and Son hereby submits to the exclusive jurisdiction and all other parties concerned hereby submit to the non exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts. 2. Definitions: In these conditions Henry Aldridge and Son who act only as auctioneers for the vendor are called “The Auctioneers”, and the representative of Henry Aldridge conducting the sale is called “The Auctioneer”. 3. General: Whilst Henry Aldridge and Son make every effort to ensure the accuracy of their catalogue and the description of any lot: Each lot as set out in the catalogue or as divided or combined with any other lot or lots is sold by the vendor with all faults, imperfections and errors of description. Neither the auctioneers nor the sellers are responsible for any reference to the condition of the lots listed. The absence of any such reference does not imply that a lot is in good condition or free from faults or imperfections. Intending buyers must satisfy themselves to the condition of any lot. Attention is drawn to Clause 11. Henry Aldridge and Son do not accept responsibility for the authenticity, attribution genuiness, origin, authorship, date, age, period, condition or quality of any lot. All statements, whether printed in the catalogue or made orally as to any matters set out in (b) above are statements of opinion only and are not taken as being or implying or warranties or representation of fact by Henry Aldridge and Son. Any claim under statute must be received in writing by the auctioneers within ten days of the sale. 4.Instructions given by telephone are accepted at the senders sole risk and must be confirmed in writing forthwith. 5..Any notice by Henry Aldridge and Son to a vendor, consignor, prospective bidder or buyer will be given by mail and shall be deemed to have been duly received by the addressee 72 hours after posting. 6.In the event of a sale by private treaty both the vendor and the buyer agree to be bound by Henry Aldridge and Son’s conditions of sale. 7.Henry Aldridge and Son shall have the right by their absolute discretion, to refuse admission to its premises or attendance at its auctions of any person. 8.The Auction: The Auctioneer has absolute discretion to divide any lot, to combine any two or more lots from the sale, to refuse bids, regulate bidding or cancel the sale without in any case giving any reason or without previous notice. He may bid on behalf of the vendor for all goods which are being offered subject to reserve at the auctioneers discretion. The highest bidder shall be the buyer except in the case of a dispute. If during the auction the auctioneers considers that a dispute has arisen he has the absolute discretion to settle it or refuse a bid. All conditions, notices, descriptions and statements and other matters in the catalogue and elsewhere concerning any lot are subject to any statement modifying or affecting the same made by the auctioneer from the rostrum prior to any bid being accepted for the lot. 9.Recission: Notwithstanding any other terms of these conditions, if within seven days after the sale Henry Aldridge and Son have received from the buyer of any lot in writing that in his view the lot is a deliberate forgery and within fourteen days of any such notification the buyer returns the same to Henry Aldridge and Son in the same condition of sale, and by producing evidence, the burden of proof to be upon the buyer, satisfies Henry Aldridge and Son that considered in the light of the entry in the catalogue the lot is a deliberate forgery., then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price of the same will be refunded. In the event of any dispute then the matter shall be settled by arbitration. Both the buyer and seller agree to abide by the decision. “Deliberate Forgery” means an imitation made with the intention of deceiving as to the authorship, origin, date, etc. and which at the date of the sale had a value materially less than it would have had it been in accordance with that description. 10.Default. Henry Aldridge and Son disclaim responsibility for default by either the buyer or the vendor because they act as agents for the vendor only and therefore do not make payment to the vendor until payment is received from the buyer. 11Inspection. Each buyer by making a bid for a lot acknowledges that he has satisfied himself fully before bidding, by inspection or otherwise as to all the conditions of sale. The physical condition of and description of the lot including but not restricted to whether the lot is damaged or has been repaired or restored. 12.Property and Risk. Legal title will not pass to the buyer until the lot(s) have been paid for in full and the auctioneers shall be entitled to a lien on any lot sold until the purchase price (as defined in Clause 15 below) is paid in full but each lot is at the sole risk of the buyer from the fall of the hammer. Each buyer shall forthwith give his full name and permanent address and if called upon to do so by the auctioneer shall forthwith pay to Henry Aldridge and Son such proportion of the purchase price as the Auctioneer may require. If the buyer fails to do so, the lot may at the auctioneers discretion be put up again and resold. 12A. Money Laundering Legislation: Henry Aldridge and Son in compliance with recent money laundering legislation cannot accept cash payments in excess of £10000 or 15000 Euros, other forms of payment are not affected. 13.Every bidder shall be deemed to act as principal unless there is written acknowledgement by Henry Aldridge and Son that he acts as agent on behalf of a named principal 14. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for Henry Aldridge and Son relating to a lot including the contents of this catalogue, is and shall remain at all times the property of Henry Aldridge and Son and shall not be used by the buyer, nor anyone else, without prior written consent. Henry Aldridge and Son and the seller make no representation or warranty that the buyer of a property will acquire any copyright or other reproduction rights. 15.Removal of goods. No purchase shall be claimed or removed until it has been paid for and the sale has been concluded. All purchases shall be paid for and removed at the buyers risk and expense by the end of working day of the sale. The auctioneers shall not be responsible if the same are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed. If they are not paid for and removed on the day of the sale the auctioneers reserve the right to charge for the removal of the goods from their saleroom to their stores at a cost of Ten pounds per item plus haulage costs. Any liability on behalf of the auctioneer in respect of any loss shall be restricted to the maximum price paid by the buyer of the lot. 17.Purchase Price and Buyers Premium. The purchaser shall pay the hammer price together with a premium of 15% (together with any VAT chargeable on the final bid and such premium) on each single lot on the sum up to and including £50,000 and 10% (together with any VAT chargeable on the final bid and such premium) on the balance over £50,001 . The premium attracts VAT at the standard rate and is payable by all purchasers. By making a bid the buyer acknowledges that he assents to the auctioneers receiving and retaining the said premium. 18. To ensure that bids will be accepted and the delivery of lots not delayed, intending buyers not known to us must supply bank or credit references to HENRY ALDRIDGE & SON. These should be provided in good time to be taken up before the sale. 19. Henry Aldridge and Son retain the copyright on all images produced by themselves before and after the auction sale. We reserve the right to use them in any future publicity material, either written, digital or broadcast form after the sale date.

73. R.M.S. OCEANIC: ORIGINAL 1903 WHITE STAR
ADVERTISING POSTER. Original White Star Line R.M.S. Oceanic sailing advertising cardboard poster measuring 11ins. x 12ins. (28cm x 30cm). The poster is printed in black and red ink with striking contrast, and bears the red and white swallowtail White Star Line burgee. On 10th April 1912 as Titanic was departing from Southampton Water she passed Berth 38 where the New York and Oceanic were moored. The suction from Titanic caused both liners to draw towards her, with a quick acting tug boat saving the day. On 13th May 1912, the Oceanic serendipitously discovered Titanic’s collapsible A lifeboat which contained three bodies, all of which were buried at sea. The Oceanic carried the lifeboat to New York. The Carpathia was built by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson at their Newcastle Upon Tyne, England ship yard. She was launched on 6th August 1902 and after a rather eventful career was sunk on 17th July 1918 by a German U-boat. Although Carpathia was an English ship, the photograph depicts a U.S. flag flying from her forward mast, which may suggest that she was arriving in Boston on her maiden voyage from Liverpool in 1903. The account relates to the prospecting of gold and states he wishes to send his son Trevor out to Australia to the mine he refers to. He mentions “I held complete records of the mine until 1917 but lost them with many other papers I unwisely had with me whilst in command of a destroyer that sunk in the North Sea”.

The probable use of this pass would have been for issue prior to news of the disaster to allow a friend or relative access to a passenger only customs area. NB. Mr Karl Behr was a first class passenger on Titanic and also a well known tennis player. He was runner up in the 1907 men’s doubles at Wimbledon and won the Davis Cup in 1915 with fellow Titanic survivor Richard Norris Williams.

FROM S.S. LAPLAND PASSENGER UPON NEWS OF TITANIC DISASTER: Handwritten, single sheet, four sided, on Waldorf-Astoria, New York letterhead, dated Thursday Night [18 April, 1912] from Esther Scott to her father, unsigned. In part, “…The whole city [New York] is just full of the awful Titanic accident. 160 of the people on the Carpathia are dead--frozen before they were rescued. The Carpathia docks at 9 tonight…” The letter is accompanied by its mailing envelope, no stamp. The Red Star Liner Lapland, one of the vessels belonging to IMM, White Star Line’s parent company, transported many of Titanic’s crew back to England. Mary Elizabeth Webb Scott and her 16 year-old daughter, Esther, wrote several letters from New York prior to boarding the vessel and while on board. The Scott’s were a prominent Sandy Spring, Maryland family. Mary’s husband, Dr. Samuel I. Scott, was a dentist and a founder of the American Rifle Team.

The drawing comes complete with a letter to the original owner from John Eaton that states “It appears to be part of the reading and writing room on A Deck, a space that in Titanic became the Ladies lounge”. 15.1/2ins. x 9.1/2ins. NB. Arthur Henry Durand F.R.I.B.A. was an employee of Waring and Gillow and latterly established an independent practice specialising in interior design of ships. This drawing is taken directly from the Durand folios which contain other examples of designs from Titanic’s interior.
241. R.M.S. TITANIC MARCONIGRAMS: “Both on Carpathia meet me New York, Henry” is the transmitted Marconigram
message from the Titanic survivor C.E.H. Stengel to his son Ivan that Father and Mother are safe (the words ‘both on’ are partially obscured by slight pasting damage by wireless operator). The couple who were travelling in Titanic’s First Class had in fact escaped the sinking liner in separate lifeboats. Mr Stengel, 55 years old, of Newark, New Jersey whose business was in furs and fancy clothing accessories would later give one of the fullest and most dramatic eye-witness published accounts of the disaster to be quoted from a passenger’s viewpoint (‘Sinking of the Titanic’ published 1912). As re-enacted in the movies “A Night to Remember” when Titanic struck the iceberg he was playing poker in the First Class smoking room, in a school which included another survivor, Harry Homer, whose Marconigram to his Mother Louise in New York is by chance pasted on the reverse side. However the name Homer was not on the Titanic’s passenger list as he had travelled under the alias of Haven. Being a professional card-shark it was one of several he used on the transatlantic liners where he plied his trade to conceal his true identity. Both Marconigrams were initialled and sent by Carpathia’s wireless operator Harold Cottam who has added up the cost on each in the customary red ink. Provenance Ex. John Booth collection.

NAL, OF PRESIDENT WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT AND TITANIC VICTIM ARCHIBALD BUTT. Incredible 15ins. x 19ins. (38cm x 48cm) original portrait photograph of U.S. President William Howard Taft and his military aid Major Archibald Butt at a ceremonial laying of a corner stone. Hand written on the reverse is, “Inscription on the Corner stone of the Post Chapel San Antonio Texas-Pictured from left to right Major Archibalt (sic) Butt, Secretary of War DickinsonWm Howard Taft President of the U.S.A...” with printed photographer’s studio label above which reads, “Fred Hummert...San Antonio Tex.” Although the photograph is not dated, an article in the October 19, 1909 edition of the New York Times reported that on the previous morning, President Taft laid the corner stone at the nearly completed chapel at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, a military base Taft helped establish when he had been Secretary of War. Thus, this photograph would have been taken on 18 October 1909. The photo is enclosed in its original oak frame to an overall size of 21.1/2ins. x 24.3/4ins. (54.6cm x 62.8cm), and is signed in ink in the lower right corner by the photographer, Ernst Raba. Fred Hummert studio was in the San Antonio area from the 1800’s until the early part of the next century, during which Ernst Wilhelm Raba worked for him briefly.

Major Archibald Willingham Butt was a close military aid to President Taft. He boarded the Titanic as a First Class passenger in Southampton following a six-week holiday in Europe. He did not survive. So intent was Taft on learning of Butt’s fate following the disaster, he ordered naval vessels to obtain a list of survivors by wireless when information on his status had not been received from Carpathia.

LATED TO JOHN JACOB ASTOR. ���������������������������������������������������� A colour postcard, postmarked 1907, depicting an image of a street scene in Algonac, Michigan. Pictured on the street are some people and a covered wagon. Hanging above, stretching from one side of the street to the other, is a banner which reads “Col. JJ Astor” followed by what appears to be the number “50”. It would seem that the town was welcoming Col. Astor for some reason. Algonac, Michigan remains a thriving town today and this card is certainly deserving of more research. At first glance, Astor does not appear to have had any significant connection to Algonac. Col. John Jacob (J.J.) Astor was considered to be the richest man on board Titanic and one of the richest men in America at the time. He married Madeleine Talmage Force when she was 18 years old. She was about 5 months pregnant with Astor’s son at the time of the sinking. Madeleine survived the sinking. He did not.

Mr. and Mrs. George D. Widener boarded the Titanic at Cherbourg with their son, Harry Elkins Widener, Mr. Widener’s man servant, Edwin Keeping, and the Widener’s maid, Amalie Gieger. They occupied First Class cabins C80/82. The Wideners are renowned for having hosted the dinner for Captain Smith on the night of the disaster. Questions have arisen as to whether Smith had imbibed too much alcohol at this dinner party but these rumours have been founded on conjecture rather that fact.
After losing her husband and son, Harry, Mrs. Widener made a large donation to Harvard University for the creation of the Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library which continues to house Harry’s large collection of books. Today, it is considered to be the world’s largest academic library. Although Harvard maintains over 700 portraits throughout its halls, it does not possess a portrait of its library’s benefactor.
Eleanor Elkins Widener died in Paris on 13th July 1937. Upon her death, her estate passed to her son, George Dunton Widener, Jr. Upon his death in 1971, his estate passed to the Widener’s grandson, Fitz Eugene Dixon, Jr., a Philadelphia philanthropist and the son of the Widener’s daughter. Upon Mr. Dixon’s death on 7th August 2006, he was interred in the Widener family mausoleum near Elkins Park and some of his estate items, including this portrait of his famous grandmother were distributed.

248. R.M.S. TITANIC: E. SCHNABEL - 19th CENTURY AMERICAN PORTRAIT OIL ON CANVAS OF TITANIC SURVIVOR ELEANOR ELKINS WIDENER.
Beautiful and stately original portrait, oil on canvas, depicting First Class survivor Eleanor Widener (nee Elkins) circa 1880’s. The canvas measures approx. 25ins. x 30ins. (63cm x 76cm) with an overall size including frame of 34ins. x 39ins. (86cm x 99cm). The portrait is housed in a magnificent period gold leaf frame that is original to the piece. When Mrs. Widener sat for this portrait, she would have likely been in her 20’s. The Widener mansion, known as Lynnewood Hall, is in Elkins Park, U.S.A. The 110 room Georgian style mansion included a sun-lit art wing in which this portrait was likely displayed. The mansion still exists, although no longer in the Widener family, and is pictured here in its current state. The painting is signed by E. Schnabel besides Mrs. Widener’s left shoulder. Edward Schnabel was born in Germany circa 1819 and was a portrait artist in Philadelphia, sharing a studio there with John F. Finkeldey. Schnabel truly captured the essence and beauty of his subject in this painting. Examples of Schnabel’s work are held at Smithsonian and also Library of Congress
The painting was restored by the Dixon family with two small areas of visible retouching in the upper right background not affecting the image. There is also a very minor loss to the frame in the upper left corner. The frame was professionally relined and re-stretched. The reverse of the original frame is inscribed “Eleanor Elkins” in period writing, and “Mr. Dixon” was written in white chalk on the new stretcher by the restorer. The artist did an impeccable job choosing a background colour which created the perfect contrast for his subject’s cream-coloured facial features and her striking blue eyes. We are unaware of another period portrait of a renowned Titanic passenger coming to public sale. This lot may present a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire an original period portrait of one of Titanic’s most notable and influential passengers. A true museum piece. The photographer, Ira L. Hill (18771947), opened his portrait studio at 403 5th Avenue in Manhattan in 1907. He established himself as a photographer of society and celebrity figures and had many of his portraits appear in the society pages in the New York Times. He became a personal friend of Lady Duff-Gordon and dominated the fashion pages of Theatre Magazine. His collection of photo negatives occupies 323 file drawers at the Smithsonian Institution. This photograph captures the essence of a slightly post-Titanic Lucile at the height of her fashion career. And it includes the period magazine in which this very photograph was published. Truly unique.

OF LADY DUFF-GORDON AND A RELATED PUBLICATION. Original 8ins. x 10ins. (20cm x 25cm) sepia photograph of First Class Titanic survivor and Edwardian couturier, Lady Duff-Gordon (Lucile), seated in a fashionable full length pose looking slightly off camera, circa 1914. The photo was taken by Ira L. Hill, a top New York photographer noted for his work with celebrities, and bears his copyright. Original markings, stamp and label on the reverse evidence that the photo had been used for publication in Theatre Magazine’s March 1915 issue. Included in this lot is an original issue of that magazine with the published photo and an interview of Lady Duff-Gordon. Lady Duff-Gordon, her husband Sir Cosmo, and her maid boarded the Titanic at Cherbourg. By then, Lucile was already an established fashion designer. The Duff-Gordons and their maid were rescued in lifeboat 1 which carried only 12 people despite having a capacity for 40. Their rescue was not without controversy. Cosmo Duff-Gordon had promised the crew members of their lifeboat 5 pounds each to cover the cost of their lost possessions. The gesture was later viewed as an incentive for the crew not to return to pick up additional survivors. The Duff-Gordons denied this but their lifeboat was nevertheless dubbed “The Money Boat”. Lady Duff-Gordon passed away in London in April 1935.

250. R.M.S. TITANIC: LETTER FROM EDITH RUSSELL WITH RARE FULL SIGNATURE. This lot consists of the final 2 and a half pages of a letter from First Class Titanic survivor Edith L. Rosenbaum (1879-1975) written between 1917 and 1919 addressing mid-summer fashions. The letter is signed in full, “Edith L. Russell”, which was Rosenbaum’s pen name.
Russell boarded the Titanic as a First Class passenger at Cherbourg and occupied cabin A-11. She had been in Paris reporting on French fashions when she decided to return to the United States on Titanic. Although somewhat of a celebrity in her own right as a fashion writer and war correspondent, Russell’s real claim to fame began after she met Titanic historian Walter Lord at the New York premier of the 1953 Titanic film. She and Lord became good friends and Lord included her Titanic story in his legendary book ‘A Night to Remember’ (Henry Holt, 1955). Afterwards, Russell served as the technical advisor to the 1958 film version of ‘A Night To Remember’ (Rank Organisation, 1958) in which Russell’s legendary musical pig from Titanic was featured. She later gave that pig to Lord who then bequeathed it to the Maritime Museum at Greenwich.
Anything signed by Russell is desirable since much of her professional correspondence was either unsigned or contained a typed signature only. This contains her extremely rare full signature as well as some hand written notations believed to be hers.

258. R.M.S. TITANIC: ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF ASTOR STEAM YACHT NOMA EN
ROUTE TO MEET CARPATHIA: The steam yacht Noma was built in 1902 by the Burlee Dry Dock Company in New York. It was later acquired by John Jacob Astor’s son Vincent. It was reported in the New York Times on 2 September 1911, that J. J. Astor and his bride-to-be, Madeleine Force, and her family, had sailed on the Noma up the Hudson River in New York towards the Astor family home in preparation of their forthcoming marriage. This lot consists of a photograph, 5ins. x 7ins. with white border, of the Noma at sea on April 18 1912. The yacht was carrying William V. Astor, son of J. J. Astor, whose intention was to meet the Carpathia upon her arrival in Ambrose Channel so that he could take off his stepmother (Madeleine Astor) whom he had known to be on board. There does not appear to be a record of the transfer having actually occurred. Given the need for a passenger to be cleared through immigration and the unlikeliness of the Carpathia stopping to disembark a passenger in mid-channel, Mr. Astor’s plan probably did not come to fruition. Photographer’s stamp on verso. There is a slight discolouration in the sky area and some writing in the negative at the top. Otherwise, this is a crystal clear image of the yacht at sea en route to a little known intended rendezvous.

TITANIC’S LAUNCH BELFAST. Small, but significant, original snapshot photograph, approx. 2.1/2ins. x 3.1/2ins. (6.4cm x 9cm), on glossy paper depicting Titanic from her starboard stern to amidships during her launch in Belfast. This unpublished photograph was discovered about eight years ago in a photo album amongst many other, unrelated, photos taken during the same time period as well as a beautiful and unique image of Olympic awaiting her sea trial trip on the day of Titanic’s launch and another of Olympic’s spare propellers. This lot includes the Titanic launch photo only. Written in pencil on the reverse is, “Launch of Titanic from Harland and Wolff Belfast May 1911. 45,000 tons-water displacement 60,000- length 882”. There is a small chip to the paper at the border not affecting the image. Interestingly, there is a shadow of the original negative film strip near the upper border, not affecting the image at all. Many other photos in the album have the same affect. This suggests that the photographer developed his own photographs, without using a print masking frame when projecting the image through the developer onto the photographic paper.
This image is similar to that on a postcard featured in “Titanic: An Illustrated History” by Donald Lynch and Ken Marschall (Chartwell Books, 2005) but it is not the same. The photo in this lot has not been published.
The Titanic was launched into Belfast Lough to a large crowd of onlookers at the Harland & Wolff Shipyard in Belfast on May 31 1911.

260. R.M.S. TITANIC: REVEREND JOHN HARPER ME
MORIAL PHOTOGRAPH/POSTCARD. This photograph features a beautiful tablet erected to the memory of Second Class passenger Reverend John Harper, 39 years old, in the Walworth Road Baptist Church in London. The photograph was printed as a postcard and the message on the tablet speaks of Harper and the circumstances which led to his travel to America on Titanic.
There is no mention of this memorial in the literature we have consulted including the definitive Titanic Memorials Worldwide by renowned Titanic historian Brian Ticehurst.
Accordingly, this may be the only record and image of the memorial to Reverend Harper extant. Unfortunately, the church in which it was displayed no longer stands.
The postcard was postally used and is dated October 18th 1912. The hand written message discusses Harper and describes where the memorial was located in the church. This may be a unique opportunity to own what may be the only existing record of the memorial to one of Titanic’s lesser-known heroes. Measures 5.1/2ins. x 3.1/2ins. (14cm x 9cm).

Just after midnight on 14th April, Harper advised Nana and Ms. Leitch that the ship hit an iceberg and had them put on their life jackets. He wrapped Nana in a blanket and placed her in the care of Ms. Leitch whereupon they boarded lifeboat #11. That was the last either of them saw of Harper. According to witnesses, Harper spent his final moments much the same as he spent the preceding days of the voyage devoted to prayer, and consoling others.
In New York, the Carpathia was met by two representatives of the Moody Church who travelled from Chicago. They attempted to encourage Nana and Ms. Leitch to return with them to Chicago but Ms. Leitch felt it best for them to return home; so on 25th April 1912 they departed for England on the Celtic.
Nana married Reverend Pont. She passed away in 1986 at the age of 80. Ms. Leitch passed away some years earlier.
The photo was probably taken around the time the postcard was sent as Nana appears to be about 5 years old. She was 6 on Titanic. The photograph is an outstandingly obscure piece of Titanic history featuring a member of the clergy who did not survive, and two of his family members who did -- as well as the family dog. The photograph measures 5.1/2ins. x 3.1/2ins. (14cm x 9cm)

POSTCARD OF REVEREND JOHN HARPER’S TITANIC PARTY. A stunning original portrait photograph of Harper, Nana (seated on Harper’s lap), Ms. Leitch and their dog and has been printed as a postcard. It is postmarked March 31st 1911 and contains a hand written message about Harper. Reverend John Harper was born in Glasgow in 1872 and devoted himself to bible study at an early age. In 1897 he helped to establish a church in a suburb of Glasgow with 25 members, which had grown to almost 500 members by September 1910 when he accepted a position as Pastor at the Walworth Road Baptist Church in London. By this time his wife had passed away leaving him to care for their daughter, Annie Jessie (“Nana”), with the help of his niece, Miss Jessie W. Leitch.

Harper was invited to host a series of revival meetings at the Moody Church in Chicago in the Spring of 1912. Upon accepting the temporary post in America, passage to New York was arranged for him, Nana and Ms. Leitch aboard the Lusitania; however, on the morning of 2nd April 1912 Harper received word that the coal strike would keep the Lucy in dock and that the Cunarder Carmania would take her place. Not keen on sailing on a slower ship, he booked Second Class passage for his party on Titanic instead.

“Mackay Bennett with Titanic’s dead”. This period image is mounted on board and taken directly from the negative, and is also marked Kalman Studio 20817. Some staining. 9.1/2ins. x 6ins.
264. R.M.S. TITANIC: TABLE MADE OF TITANIC WRECK
WOOD. A hand made occasional/games table. The table is supported by four wooden legs and is functional. Oral history related that it was acquired from a family in Halifax, Nova Scotia, having originally come from a carpenter who crafted it from Titanic wreckwood.17ins. x 17.1/2ins. (43cm x 44.5cm), with an additional lower platform measuring 11.1/2ins. x 11.1/2ins. and an overall height of 30ins. (76cm). (http://museum.gov.ns.ca/mma/research/titanicfaq.html) states the crew of the Halifax ships followed a very old tradition of keeping fragments of notable shipwrecks as reminders or commemorative objects. It further states that anonymous pieces of wrecked woodwork were often carved into various objects which were not sold commercially but kept by the family of mariners who recovered bodies as a reminder of their family role. Noted Titanic memorabilia collector Craig Sopin examined the table and has confirmed that the table’s distinctive inlaid pattern appears to be in the style of William J. Parker. Parker was the carpenter on board the Minia, the second vessel chartered by White Star Line to recover bodies of Titanic victims. Parker was known to fashion various objects from Titanic wreckwood retrieved by the Minia.

The table had previously supported an electric lamp on its upper surface and several books below. It could be put to practical use as a table or night stand or just displayed as is. Either way, it represents one of the scarce examples of 3-dimensional objects crafted from Titanic’s floating flotsam.

Malcolm Johansson travelled together with fellow Swedes, Gustaf Joel Johansson and Oscar Hedman. An interesting fact which was to become relevant, was that his brother and family stated he had over $1,000 in dollar bills sewn into his socks prior to leaving, presumably the funds he never used to purchase his farm. Johansson died in the sinking. His body was found by the Mackey Bennett. The ship was hired by the White Star Line to recover the bodies of those lost and to take them back to Halifax, he was number 37. When his body was recovered and according to the official list of effects he was still wearing his boots but his socks were missing, otherwise he was correctly dressed. His brother Wilhelm Nilsson wrote to the authorities in New York several times to find out what had happened to the money that was allegedly sewn into his socks but nothing was ever proven. The authorities denied any knowledge of foul play and the mystery of his missing socks and the money was never solved. All his other belongings were sent back to his family in Sweden, where they remained for 97 years. Malcolm was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Halifax on May 10th 1912. Lot 265

Mr Malcolm Joackim Johnson (Johansson) “Sever” was 33 when Titanic sank and born on 20th March 1879. His mother was Anna Katrina Jonsson (nee Svensson) and stepfather Isak Leonard Johansson and they lived in Bjorkaryd, Jonkoping, Sweden. Johansson, although born in Sweden, lived and worked in Minneapolis and owned his own successful construction business. His reason for going home to Sweden from the US was he wished to buy his childhood home in Bjorkaryd. Although a Third Class passenger he was comfortably off as he was able to lend his brother over $2600, a sizeable amount in 1912. This venture did not work out so he decided to return to America, he booked his passage to return to the US. He may well have travelled from Sweden on the SS Calypso like the Asplund family whose ticket number of 347077 was only fifteen away from Malcolm’s ticket which was 347062. He boarded Titanic at Southampton on April 10th 1912 and paid £7 15 shillings for his Third Class ticket. He was originally due to travel on the Adriatic but owing to the coal strike of April 1912 and a cruel quirk of fate, he was transferred to Titanic as the Adriatic was unable to make the voyage.

MALCOLM JOHANSSON ARCHIVE. A unique example of an Omega watch having been onboard and survived the Titanic sinking. This example was purchased in Sweden on June 9th 1910 and is a Lepine Omega of grade A quality and is the only documented example of an Omega to have survived the disaster. The watch itself was owned by Third Class passenger Malcolm Johansson and is stamped Omega Grand Prix Paris 1900. The movement is heavily corroded and the watch bears significant corrosion commensurate with its immersion into the cold North Atlantic on the morning of April 15th 1912. The watch remained with Mr Johansson until it was recovered along with his body by the Mackay Bennett. The hands are frozen in time at 1.37 - the time difference at that time was 47 minutes. When this is taken into account, the watch reads 2.24, moments after Titanic started her final journey to the bottom of the ocean. Thus this watch went on working unlike other examples in the sea water which would have been due in part to the fine quality of the Omega movement. The case is silver gilt and is numbered 4359429 and the movement 3494625 and is 800 standard sterling silver. N.B. With thanks to the Omega Museum, Berne, Switzerland.

MALCOLM JOHANSSON ARCHIVE: An extremely rare Manifest ticket for Titanic stamped April 10th 1912. This particular ticket was initially to be used on the Adriatic. The vessel that Mr Malcolm Johansson was to have boarded, prior to his transfer to Titanic. It is stamped in ink number 7, which has suffered from water damage. On the reverse there are instructions in several languages which include

Swedish, French, German, Italian, Finnish, Croatian and Dutch as to how the card should be used when arriving in New York. This ticket would have been presented to the authorities when an immigrant arrived at Ellis Island. It would have been one of the first things Mr Johansson retrieved from his cabin together with a luggage ticket, also being sold as a later Lot. This is only one of a handful of examples of this ticket known to today. 3.1/2ins. x 4.`1/2ins.

SON ARCHIVE: An Titanic luggage ticket stamped 2951, printed on a green card stock to be given to passenger White Star Line Southampton - Cherbourg - New York. This ticket was recovered from the body of Mr Malcolm Johansson and the stamped number 2951 relates to the luggage that was deposited in the hold of Titanic when she left Southampton on April 10th 1912. Like the Manifest ticket in the previous lot, this ticket would have been of great importance to Mr Johansson, hence why he kept it on his person as he tried to leave the ship, as without it, in his eyes he would not have been able to claim his luggage or perhaps compensation for it. This particular example is the only known luggage ticket from Titanic ever to have been offered in auction before and is one of only a handful known to exist. 4.1/2ins. x 3.1/2ins.

Harbour Commissioners Office dated 22nd July 1911. Reference excessive speed “several complaints have been received lately in regard to the excessive speed of steamers while in the harbour, more especially in the vicinity of the Titanic at new deep water wharf. The moorings of that steamer have been carried away twice�. It goes on to say how on the 21st July several men were almost killed whilst working.

The letter gives a fascinating account of life of the Lapland’s most famous voyage, when the surviving crew of the Titanic disaster were brought home to Plymouth.

274. R.M.S. TITANIC: A unique and fascinating
three page letter written by Titanic survivor Laura Francatelli to Alfred Hitchcock relating to the first screening of “Titanic”, and dated March 29th 1939.
“I am sure the story of this gigantic sea tragedy will be of interest to the general public”. This film was due to be directed by Alfred Hitchcock but was never made due to the start of W.W.II. It is sold with a period press cutting relating to the film and is from the Francatelli archive.
Lady Duff-Gordon, her husband Sir Cosmo, and her maid Laura Francatelli boarded the Titanic at Cherbourg. By then, Lucile was already an established fashion designer. The Duff-Gordons and their maid were rescued in lifeboat 1 which carried only 12 people despite having a capacity for 40. Their rescue was not without controversy. Cosmo DuffGordon had promised the crew members of their lifeboat 5 pounds each to cover the cost of their lost possessions. The gesture was later viewed as an incentive for the crew not to return to pick up additional survivors. The Duff-Gordons denied this but their lifeboat was nevertheless dubbed “The Money Boat”. Lady Duff-Gordon passed away in London in April 1935.

A unique letter written to Third Class Steward Sidney Daniels on April 2nd 1912, postmark Portsmouth later Belfast April 4th 1912. Addressed to Daniels, Stewards Department, S.S. Titanic, Belfast. Letter is written over three sides and is faded and water stained. The water staining is due to being immersed in the North Atlantic whilst on Sidney Daniels �������� person. Later newspaper accounts by Mr Daniels which are included in the lot offer the explanation in his own words. “I held onto a boat davit ready to jump overboard and I jumped into the darkness and swimming away as far as I could for how long I don’t know but I found a life buoy with a man clinging to it. I held on to that for a while and as I turned back to look I could see the stern of the Titanic standing almost straight up in the air. I knew the suction could drag us down and I suggested to the other man that we moved away. He did not answer and away I went. Eventually I saw a capsized lifeboat with several men clinging to it. Standing on this I pulled myself up on the keel and sat there just out of the water”. Also included in this lot is Mr Daniels’ White Star Line cloth cap badge and marriage licence. Mr Daniels later served with distinction in the Great War as a sapper with the Royal Engineers and included is his formal discharge and national registration identity card. NB. The letter is the only documented example to have survived being carried by a surviving crew member and is thought to be unique. Provenance by direct descent.

TITANIC - MAY BROTHERS ARCHIVE: Stanley & Richard May, two London businessmen, often took trips on liners of the day and on this occasion they combined business and pleasure with a trip to Ireland along with their sister, sister-in-law & nephew (The Odells), along with Father Browne, this family took most of the known photographs of Titanic’s last journey. Stanley May a prolific writer and avid souvenir collector who sent letters to his wife and postcards to his daughter. NB. The brothers where also aboard “Olympic” during the “Hawke” incident.
