1927 WOLSELEY

279 Wolseley 11 / 12 Deluxe 4 / 5 seat open tourer Reg. No. KA 6866 Finished in Oxford Blue, right hand drive, petrol Engine No. 1029A 2988 Cylinder capacity 1235cc Chassis Type 75220 First Registered: 6th April 1927 2 Owners from new No Current MOT Last Taxed 31st May 2012 Sorned and garaged since. Wolseley Motors Ltd was a British Motor Vehicle Manufacturer founded in early 1901. The Company initially made a full range topped by large luxury cars and dominated the Edwardian Era. In 1921 it manufactured 12,000 cars and continued to be the biggest Motor Manufacturer in Britain. Following receivership in 1927 it was acquired from Vickers by William Morris as a personal investment and years later moved into his Morris Motors Empire. This Wolseley was purchased from New by Captain Godson, a Cape Horner of the Clan Shipping Line. The car was bought from Blakes Garage in Birkenhead, Liverpool hence KA registration and was used to commute between Troon and Glasgow and to Liverpool, the car had completed around 70,000 miles when it was purchased by Tom Pate of Ayr in 1957. Thomas Pate, a mechanical engineer, completed a detailed and quality restoration of the car, the Wolseley was stripped to the chaises and almost every part was refurbished. Advise from the Wolseley Owners Club was given to maintain as much originality as possible. The resulting car is essentially original, only such items as the enamel finish, tyres, battery, hood cloth, side screen, covering and carpets having been replaced in the renovation. Four wheel brakes were originally fitted to this car as a Factory Extra (Brakeless front axles were standard). The engine size is 1261cc, has 4 cylinders and the RAC rating is 11.9hp technically an overhead camshaft, magnetic ignition. Lucas dynamo and starter and SU carburettor and an exposed flywheel containing a large single plate clutch, smooth in operation. The gearbox is built into the worm-drive rear axle and both are silent in operation. It was a testimony to the quality of the restoration and the faultless performance and reliability that the car was selected to Star in one of the most popular Television series. From 1965 - 1972 the Wolseley was used as Doctor Finlay’s personal car in the television series ‘Doctor Finlay’s Case Book’ based on A.J. Cronin’s novel Country Doctor. The storylines centred on a general medical practice in the fictional Scottish Village of Tannochbrae (filmed around Callander, Stirlingshire) during the 1920s The Wolseley belonged to Doctor Finlay, the Junior Partner in the practice played by Bill Simpson. The Wolseley was also selected to be used in the 2008 British Television adaptation of the John Buchan’s novel the Thirty Nine Steps, produced by the BBC. The car was successfully used as a Wedding Car on hire throughout Ayrshire. The Wolseley has completed 93500 miles since its restoration A large History File comes with the car. £10,000-£15,000

The Bullnose with its distinctive radiator was the car that displaced the Model T as the best selling car in Britain. W.R. Morris adopted the Ford Policy of reducing prices to increase sales and obtain the benefits of mass production. Morris’s strategy paid off Oxford 14 / 28, 4 seater retailed at £285 The Bullnose Morris was not only value for money, it had a combination of brisk performance and unfailing reliability. The Bullnose dominated the Motoring Scene of the Mid Twenties. This Morris Oxford was purchased from New by Donald Hardie, Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire on 13th March 1924 In 1962 Thomas Pate, a mechanical engineer from Ayrshire purchased the Bullnose and started a program of detailed restoration. The car was stripped to the chassis and almost every part was carefully reconditioned and refurnished. Advice from the Bullnose Morris Club was given to maintain as much originality as possible, the resulting car is essentially original, only such items as the enamel finish, tyres, battery, hood cloth and side screens have been replaced in the renovation. The car still holds its original registration number MB 4694 on the original steel plates, in fact even the current Grey leather interior is original. However, this now requires reupholstering. In January 1988 Thomas Pate successfully completed the Rallye Neige Et Glace, Snow and Ice Challenge, a Vintage Rally in Grenoble in the Swiss Alps during the depths of winter. The Bullnose was driven from Ayrshire to Switzerland and returning to Ayrshire some three weeks later. It was a testimony to the quality of the restoration and the continued reliability that the car was selected to Star in the 2008 British Adaptation of the John Buchan’s novel the Thirty Nine Steps produced by the BBC and filmed on location in Scotland. The Bullnose was also popular as a Wedding Car on hire throughout Ayrshire. A large History File comes with the car £10,000-£15,000

299 David Gauld RSA (Scottish 1867-1936) Oil on canvas signed lower left (Ian McNicol, Glasgow, label) ‘Calves by the Solway’ 50cm x 754cm Gauld was an apprentice Lithographer with Gilmour and Deen from 1882 at the Glasgow School of Art and Haldane Academy. He attended classes until 1885. In 1887 he joined the staff of the Glasgow Weekly Citizen as an illustrator. The influence of the Japanese print is obvious in his early works. Although this phase of his work was short lived, the influence carried through to this stained glass designs, in association with the firm Guthrie and Wells. His most important stained glass commission was for St. Andrew’s Scottish Church in Buenos Aires and took him ten years to complete. The result of the combination of painting and his stained glass designs produced a rich flat painted surface combined with sharp, angular, delineation of shapes. The above work can be dated to post 1900, when Gauld returned to oil painting after the completion of the Buenos Aires Project, it was his popular cattle and calves studies for which he is renowned. These fine oils came to adorn many middle class Glasgow Drawing Rooms, along with the later paintings of Hornel and two younger Glasgow artists William Wells and W.A. Gibson £4000-£6000
