Our Collection of Buildings & Spaces Faculty and students undertake teaching and research activities in a variety of spaces located in four campus buildings. At the center of these spaces is Pence Hall, and at the heart of Pence Hall are areas for student advising and support services, administrative offices, classrooms, the Hunter M. Adams Design Library, and fabrication facilities. Visitors to the building constantly remark about the exciting energy of the people they encounter in Pence and the invigorating work displayed for classes and special happenings that occur throughout the year.

Paying homage to the building’s fifty-year history as the home base for architecture, and positioning the College at the vanguard for learning and design in the twenty-first century, a revitalized Pence Hall symbolizes the face - old and new - of the integrated and innovative College of Design for prospective and current students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Spaces in the other buildings on campus which the College occupies - Bowman, Funkhouser, and Miller also add vitality and life to the College. While we have our eye on Pence as the symbolic centerpiece in this constellation of buildings and spaces, we recognize that all of our spaces deeply influence us as designers learning and teaching the building arts in the spaces comprising the College of Design at UK.

Transforming our College The Pence Hall spaces under chief scrutiny are the very first areas students and visitors encounter as they enter the building. We would like the building to reflect the energetic learning that takes place here. The plans described here enact the recommendations of the 2007-2008 planning effort to centralize administration on the first floor of the building and also emphasize Pence Hall’s valuable location at the crossroads of campus. Realizing Pence Hall as the center of our College makes possible our interest in demonstrating excellence in education at the University of Kentucky.

The renovation plans envision the College of Design as a high functioning, innovative space wherein the promise of design - to make the world a better place - is made manifest. In all phases, the renovation of Pence Hall also brings the building into the twenty-first century with updated wiring, reconfigured sprinkler systems, and refurbishing of all interior appointments. With students at the center of the planned improvements, we will positively impact the quality of education they receive. We will amplify the sense of belonging they will feel while here, and later, as alumni of the College. And, maybe most significantly, we will attract an even higher caliber of student to our programs if we have signature, well-designed spaces in which they will thrive.

Phase 1 Because students are the College’s first priority, the first phase of the renovation is focused on consolidating Student Services into one location. Dedicated offices in a repurposed studio space provide privacy for students and security of information. The student recruitment center takes form next door, creating an exciting environment to showcase student work for prospective students. These reconceptualized rooms emphasize the importance of the student experience in the College of Design. This phase also brings new energy to the College as the home for our College leaders who direct the schools and programs in which our students are enrolled, the business officers who manage the daily operations of the College, and the main receiving space for all visitors.

Completion by mid-March 2014.

Phase 2 With an eye toward the College’s external relations, the second phase of renovations features changes to our development and communications offices and adds a College conference suite. These improvements make possible the collaborative, connective activities we espouse as designer-teachers to our students, which helps our students see the great promise of many people working together on their behalf. Finally, we also more efficiently connect with others - from our colleagues across campus, to our alumni and our partners in the community.

Renovations begin Spring 2014.

Phase 3 As the renovations come full circle on the first floor of Pence, we will fashion a new home for the Dean of the College. The cornerstone in presenting our visionary College for the next century, this office and support space includes conferencing capability to bring to life many of the new ideas that will unfold in the decades to come. The common public areas will also receive attention with the installation of smart wall technology for showcasing dynamic student work, excellence in faculty teaching and research, and lively college events. This phase will produce a vibrant new face for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors as they make their way into Pence Hall and to the College of Design.

Renovations begin Summer 2014.
