AmaWaterways sweeps the board in new Berlitz cruise guide AmaWaterways’ AmaPrima has been declared the best river ship in Europe in the new Berlitz: River Cruising in Europe guide, published this month. What’s more, AmaWaterways’ European fleet has secured the top 11 spots in the guide’s ranking of more than 280 river cruise ships, underscoring the award-winning line’s position as an innovative industry pioneer and supplier of unparalleled river cruises.
This is our big annual event where the whole cruise community – cruise lines, travel partners, media and travel agents – work together to get more people to cruise.
“AmaWaterways is honoured to continually be recognised as the innovator we aim to be a true leader in river cruising,” says Kristin Karst, executive vice president and coowner of AmaWaterways. “This incredible distinction reflects our mission not only to design the most trend-setting ships on the market, but also to offer travellers top-ofthe-line luxuries while exploring the world’s most desired European waterways.”
Of course every week should be a cruise week, but this is our big annual promotion where we will work hard to maximise the nationwide conversation about cruise through TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, online and in social media.
Written by Douglas Ward, author of the popular Berlitz: Cruising and Cruise Ships, the new Berlitz: River Cruising in Europe evaluates more than 280 river vessels based on all aspects of river cruising. The guide’s scoring system rates each ship in five principal areas, including hardware (the ship itself), accommodation, cuisine, service and miscellaneous, with a possible maximum score in each category of 100.
And we would love you to play your part in making cruise the hot topic that week because the more CLIA members that get involved then the more impact we can have.
AmaWaterways’ enviable European line-up rounded out the guide’s top 11 positions, all with four-star plus ratings – the highest level found in the book. With an overall score of 422, AmaPrima took the crown as Queen of all European river cruise vessels, while the top 11 ships overall were AmaBella; AmaCello; AmaCerto; AmaDagio; AmaDante; AmaDolce; AmaLegro; AmaLyra; AmaVerde; and AmaVida. The new AmaReina and AmaSonata will be graded for the next guide.
Imagine what impact we can have if every travel agent in the UK & Ireland gets behind the promotion by holding a consumer event (however big or small), and everyone else takes to social media, uses the special CLIA Cruise Week logo, and generally endorses the campaign!
Praising AmaWaterways for its exceptional service and cuisine, Ward details in the guide how the line “spends more on food, wine and food service training than almost any other river cruise company.” He also comments, “AmaWaterways knows how to do it right and it shows.” Berlitz: River Cruising in Europe is available from bookshops at £14.99 For more information about AmaWaterways’ luxury river cruises contact AmaWaterways on freephone 0808 256 8422, www.amawaterways.co.uk

Completion of significant Port developments in the Baltic Sea Region: at Copenhagen Malmö Port; and the Port of Tallinn
May 2014 has proved an exciting month in the Baltic Sea Region with the ‘royal’ inauguration of four new terminals at Copenhagen Malmö Port; and the opening of a new 9.34 million euro cruise ship quay at the Port of Tallinn.
Member of Port of Tallinn, at the official quay opening ceremony. “This investment will, on the one hand, satisfy the growing demand for Tallinn as a tourist destination and, on the other hand, help us meet the needs of cruise operators that want to use larger and larger vessels.” According to Urve Palo, the Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications, there is still potential for the increase in the numbers of cruise tourists on the Baltic Sea resulting from the joint marketing of Tallinn and other cruise destinations of the Baltic Sea, which will obviously affect the economy of the tourist destinations. “Tallinn is one of the top destinations in the Baltics, that is very highly regarded by the visitors arriving here onboard the cruise ships,” said Ms. Palo. “According to a survey, performed by consulting company G.P.Wild, cruise tourists are very happy with Tallinn and highly appreciate friendliness of the locals, service in stores and historical attractions of the city.” With the new quay, Port of Tallinn is able to moor cruise ships up to 340 metres in length, up to 42 metres in width, and with the draft of up to nine metres.
Copenhagen Malmö Port has built four, new dedicated Cruise Terminals, three in the Danish capital Copenhagen and one in Swedish city Malmo, just across the sea. These two ports have expanded in order to meet future demands. At a total investment in the region of DKK600 million, the expansion of the Port of Copenhagen has taken in place not only to meet future demands but also to develop the facilities even further. The pier will allow space for three large cruise ships along a 1,100 metre long and 70 metres wide dedicated cruise quay. There are three terminal buildings, each of 3,300 sqm with green roofs. Each terminal building has 1,800 sqm for passenger handling and 1,500 sqm for luggage handling.
The construction of the new quay next to the existing cruise ships quay in the Old City harbour started in May 2013. The total length of the quay built by the Estonian branch of BMGS is 421 metres; it is 20 metres wide, and the guaranteed depth at the quay wall is 11 metres. The cruise ship quay has also been outfitted with electricity supply, outdoor lighting, communications equipment and pipelines for supplying ships with utility water and removing waste water. During the 2014 cruise season Tallinn is to welcome around 300 vessels bringing approximately 470,000 cruise tourists to the capital of Estonia. The summer cruise season lasts until 26 September, however, cruise tourists are also expected to visit Tallinn in October and December.

Port of Tallinn has opened a new 9.34 million euro cruise ship quay, which allows larger cruise ships than before to be docked and thus increases Tallinn’s appeal to cruise operators. The opening of the quay on 17th May was marked with the mooring of the 330-metre long Royal Princess, the largest cruise vessel to have ever visited Estonia so far. “For the Port of Tallinn, the construction of the new quay was the largest single investment last year,” said Alan Kiil, the Board

Construction Of Third Hamburg Cruise Terminal Commences
On Friday, 4th of July, the construction of the third cruise terminal in Hamburg commenced with a symbolic ground breaking ceremony. And in less than a month, the biggest cruise ceremony will take place on the river Elbe, the fourth edition of the Hamburg Cruise Days, taking place from the 1st until the 3rd of August. The month of August will see in total 43 cruise calls. Hamburg. Surface construction work on the site of Hamburg’s third cruise terminal at the Kronprinzkai quay in Steinwerder officially commenced last Friday, 4th of July with a symbolic ground breaking ceremony. In recent years the city has become one of Europe’s most popular cruise ship destinations. In order to benefit from this potential for growth Hamburg plans to expand its status as a cruise location and has commissioned the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) to build a third cruise terminal (Cruise Center 3, CC3 for short) in cooperation with Hamburg Airport. In addition to construction of the terminal building the project also includes the provision of parking spaces and access roads; the strengthening of quay walls and operation of the third terminal as well as of the existing terminals in Altona and the Hafencity. The new terminal at the Kronprinzkai quay, in the port’s Mittlerer Freihafen area, is being constructed on a site equivalent to two football pitches. Following completion it will be able to process 8 000 passengers at any one time. There will be separate embarkation and disembarkation areas to ensure the smooth handling of the corresponding amounts of baggage. Disembarkation will take place in the east building, while new guests are able to simultaneously board their vessel via the west building. The intersection to the new CC3 terminal will also be modified and equipped with traffic lights. In addition to land access it will also be possible to reach the new terminal by ferry. A public jetty is being built in the eastern area of the terminal complex for this purpose. The existing quay walls will be retrofitted with fenders, bollards, and pile moorings to enable even the largest cruise liners to dock in future. The costs of the overall project, including transport connections and future investment in the CC1 terminal, are some 80 million euros.
European Waterways Becomes CLIA UK & Ireland’s Latest Executive Partner
The CC3 third cruise terminal is designed to be used for an initial period of 15 years. How busy the port can be during a single month, demonstrates the upcoming August. For the first time May will not be the busiest month but rather August 2014. “With a total of 43 ship’s calls; the 2014 Hamburg Cruise Days and a corresponding passenger volume of approx. 125 000 August will be the absolute high point of the year,” said Gerd Drossel, managing director Hamburg Cruise Center. The 2014 Hamburg Cruise Days from 1 – 3 August will see a total of seven cruise ships in the city. The first ships – the “Delphin” and the “Europa” – will arrive on 1 August. On Saturday, 2 August the “Gann”, “AIDAstella”, “Deutschland”, “Europa”, and “MSC Magnifica” will be mooring in the city. The last ships to arrive will be the “Deutschland” and the “AIDAluna” on 3 August, all together turning the port into Europe’s cruise hot spot as well as presenting themselves at a spectacular parade. In addition to this, the “Blue Port” light installation will bathe the port in a magical light. This year the organisers will once again be focusing on the concept of bringing the cruise world onto the landside. The four kilometrelong portside event area will extend from the HafenCity Hamburg district to Altona. Twelve thematic ‘islands’ with live music stages; premium gastronomy; sport and spa facilities; maritime shopping offerings and cruise line promotion areas will be devoted to anyand everything to do with cruises. The heart of the event will be the “Cruise Village” in the HafenCity. From the Elbe to the Danube – Ahoy Vienna! This year the Hamburg Cruise Days will be offering a very special Austrian “delicacy” – for the first time the event’s maritime flair will also be noticeable in Vienna. Hanseatic city Hamburg will be running a spectacular event entitled “Ahoy Vienna! Hamburg is coming” in Austria’s capital, based around a supersize paper ship which will arrive on the Danube Canal in Vienna’s city centre on 1 August. Large membranes aboard the ship will be transported to three central locations, where they will be folded into paper ships of the size of a grown man in front of passers-by. The show stopper? Each of these “daughter ships” will present different aspects of Hamburg. In the evenings the mother ship on the Danube Canal will become the projection screen for scenes from the Hanseatic city with the Great Hamburg Cruise Days Parade broadcast live to the ship on 2 August. To date, 187 planned ship’s calls have been registered for the Hamburg 2014 season. The number of passengers will increase to just under 600 000 (+ 8 per cent). 23 cruise lines have registered a total of 35 cruise liners to call at Hamburg in 2014.

Cruise specialists make a return trip to Portsmouth Thirty of the UK’s top specialist cruise travel agents arrived at Portsmouth International Port today (Tuesday 1st July) for a CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) Expo on smaller ship explorer cruising. Portsmouth International Port has developed a reputation as a great destination and embarkation point for small to medium sized cruise ships. The experts were briefed on developments at the Port, as well as the top class tourist attractions on its doorstep including the new Mary Rose Museum in the Historic Dockyard. Representatives from three big name cruise companies were also in the passenger terminal to talk with the agents, with the opportunity to go onboard Swan Hellenic’s luxurious Minerva. As well as a tour of the ship they had a briefing from the ship’s owners All Leisure Group, who have based three ships at Portsmouth for five consecutive summer seasons. Minerva is preparing to leave Portsmouth International Port on a fortnight’s cruise around the coast of Great Britain. Passengers will make stops in England, Scotland and Wales as they circle the UK, starting and ending their memorable holiday in Portsmouth. It followed a successful gathering at the Port last year, with many agents getting their first look at dramatic improvements to passenger facilities. The expo was organised by CLIA the trade organization that helps travel agents promote cruising. This year delegates visiting Portsmouth International Port were addressed by managers from a variety of cruise lines, including Silversea, Hurtigruten and AMA Waterways. Captain Rupert Taylor, Harbour Master at Portsmouth International Port. Said, “We had great feedback from agents attending the expo in Portsmouth last year and are delighted that even more came today. It’s always good to show specialists our first class terminal and get them to talk with operators who use the Port. They also had the opportunity to see our dedicated cruise check-in and luggage facilities in action, as passengers arrived for their cruise on Minerva.” Specialist cruise travel agents offer an expert insight into a world of complex choices for holidaymakers. The cruise industry continues to expand, with ‘niche’ holidays becoming an important sector as customer’s looks to get away from the crowds. Smaller vessels allow passengers to get closer to points of interest, and call at the less visited ports. Portsmouth plays host to a wide variety of luxury cruise liners, all offering the highest levels of service. Norwegian Cruise Line orders two new ships Norwegian Cruise Line announced today that it has reached an agreement with MEYER WERFT GMBH of Germany to build two new Breakaway-Plus class cruise ships for delivery in the second quarter 2018 and the fourth quarter 2019. Each ship will be 164,600 gross tonnes and include 4,200 passenger berths. “Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway have proven themselves as industry gamechangers and are extremely popular with our guests,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer. “It was only natural that we build on their success with this new ship order that further solidifies our long-term growth strategy.” The contract price for both ships is approximately euro 1.6 billion. The Company has export credit financing in place for each ship, arranged and underwritten by KfW IPEX-Bank GmbH of Germany. “We are thrilled that Norwegian Cruise Line has the continued confidence in MEYER WERFT to expand their fleet,” said Bernard Meyer, managing partner of MEYER WERFT. “We are very proud of our longstanding relationship with Norwegian.” Norwegian Cruise Line pioneered the concept of Freestyle Cruising® which offers guests the freedom and flexibility to enjoy their cruise holiday on their own terms, including multiple dining venues, relaxed dress codes, a variety of accommodations and world-class entertainment. The Company took Freestyle Cruising to the next level with the introduction of Norwegian Epic in June 2010 and subsequently launched two game-changing vessels, Norwegian Breakaway based in New York in May 2013 and Norwegian Getaway homeported in Miami in February 2014. These ships incorporate groundbreaking design, including The Waterfront and 678 Ocean Place, a wide range of indoor and outdoor venues on three dynamic decks creating a whole new complex at sea and connecting guests with the ocean.
Regent Seven Seas Cruises Begins Construction On Seven Sea Explorer GENOA, 15 July 2014 – Construction began this morning on Seven Seas Explorer at the Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa, Italy. The crisp pop of a cork being freed from a Krug Grande Cuvée magnum initiated a laser, which cut the ceremonial first piece of steel for the new ship. Incorporating a bottle of the world’s finest champagne to start the building process is symbolic of the high level of sophistication and design being developed for Seven Seas Explorer, which is scheduled to debut in summer 2016. The ceremonial first piece of steel cut this morning will serve as the foundation for an opulent, one-of-a-kind owner’s suite unlike any other at sea. The suite, resplendent with exquisite stonework and luscious fabrics, is a hallmark for the superior level of elegance found throughout the ship. When it debuts, Seven Seas Explorer will establish a new benchmark for style and service and perfectly complement the allinclusive luxury experience currently enjoyed by guests sailing with Regent Seven Seas Cruises. During the ceremony, Kunal S. Kamlani, president of Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Gabriele Cocco, senior executive vice president of merchant ships for Fincantieri, began a countdown that culminated with Maison Krug Italy’s master sommelier, Michela Cimatoribus, releasing the cork from a magnum of Krug Grande Cuvée. As the cork soared and the champagne flowed, confetti cascaded down and the laser cut the first piece of steel for the 750-passenger ship. “We’re one step closer to fulfilling our dream of building the most luxurious ship in the world and giving our guests another exciting option to explore inspired global destinations with our special brand of all-inclusive luxury,” noted Kamlani. “Seven Seas Explorer will surpass the current standard in luxury cruising, offering a new level of grandeur throughout the ship from its lavish suites to its elegant public spaces and gourmet restaurants.” “We are extremely excited to welcome a new partner in Regent Seven Seas Cruises and to start construction of this brilliant new ship,” commented Giuseppe Bono, CEO of Fincantieri. “As a global leader in cruise ship construction, we’ve built some of the finest ships at sea. Building the most luxurious ship ever built is quite a challenge, but with our craftsmanship and experience building luxury ships we feel that Seven Seas Explorer will become the definition of excellence.” At 54,000 gross-registered tons and carrying only 750 guests, Seven Seas Explorer will boast the highest space ratios and staff-to-guest ratios in the cruise industry and further strengthen Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ widely recognized position as the most inclusive luxury cruise line. Seven Seas Explorer will join the rest of the award-winning Regent Seven Seas Cruises fleet in the summer of 2016. Regent Seven Seas Cruises will begin taking reservations for the maiden voyage and inaugural season for Seven Seas Explorer in early 2015.
