Destination Photos - Call for Entries
Our 2014 Cruise Week theme is “destinations” giving us a great chance to showcase the extraordinary destinations and places that cruise ships and cruise customers visit. So we are asking all our members to find a destination inspired image (related to cruise) and to upload that image during Cruise Week via Twitter using the hashtag #lovecruise, and the more the merrier! Remember it should just be a great destination shot, it does not have to have a cruise ship in the image, all we ask in the tweet is that you tell us where the photo is taken. And remember that if you have any customers, crew or travel agents on-board any of your ships that week then they can be encouraged to tweet too!
#lovecruise Tweeting in general
If you have anything great to say about cruise, and how you support it, tweet it during Cruise Week, with the hashtag #lovecruise, and we will be looking to re-tweet as many as possible.
The logo will be available to download from the Member Hub of cruiseexperts.org from 1st September. If you need the logo sooner, just email alonsdale@cruising.org
Promotions Page - Add your Cruise Week offers
On cruiseexperts.org, we have a brand new section which allows all Cruise Line & Executive Partner members the opportunity to promote any agent focussed promotions that they can take advantage of. The page was created in response to more “offer-related” cruise news received by us, which couldn’t be shared through our traditional news page, due to its focus on price and offers. These sorts of press releases now have a home, and we will be pushing travel agents to visit it over Cruise Week, so make sure your Cruise Week offers are on there! You are in full control of these offers – which are very easy to add through the creation of a profile on www.widgety.co.uk. Once registered, use the “Events” tab on the top left to select “Promotions”. All eyes on Hamburg’s cruise scene
MTN Continues to Lead the Cruise Market with Transformative Communications Solutions, Securing New Contracts and Renewals MTN Communications (MTN) announces three cruise operators around the world have selected the company for its passenger, crew, corporate communications and content services.
One cruise event follows the other. 250,000 people in Hamburg just have celebrated the ten-year anniversary of the “Queen Mary 2”; only two weeks later, the river Elbe will be again the cruise stage. On the first weekend in August (01 - 03 August 2014), the Hamburg Cruise Days will take place for the in total 4th time. In 2015 the Hamburg Cruise Days will take place together with the Seatrade Europe in Hamburg. Ten years to the day after its first visit to Hamburg, 250,000 people once again welcomed the “Queen Mary 2” to the Hanseatic city. The transatlantic passenger ship docked in the port in the morning. In the evening, appropriate goodbyes were said to the 345 metre long ocean liner with fireworks and a banner parade. The “Queen Mary 2” was in Hamburg for the first time on 19 July 2004 and was welcomed by more than 500,000 people. The “Queen Mary 2” left the cruise terminal around 21.25, and then the sail away show “Mille Saluti Hamburg” began with fireworks along the Elbe and an escort of accompanying vessels. When it reached the landing bridge, the Cunard flagship was given a musical farewell. A total of six fireworks shows, an illuminated roof peak of the St. Michael’s Church and a musical matinee in front of the landing bridge bid the giant cruise ship farewell as it left HafenCity. The main fireworks started at 21.55 and the finale of the festivities took place at 22.30 at the Hotel Louis C. Jacob where guests and employees first of all said goodbye from the terrace to the slowly passing “Queen Mary 2” in the traditional way by saluting. Thereafter the ocean liner headed out towards New York. Two weeks later, the next cruise event is waiting. It is a must for all cruise fans. The Hamburg Cruise Days is among the most popular and successful events in the Hanseatic city. 570,000 people enjoyed the fascination of the world of cruising in 2012. On the first weekend in August (01 - 03 August 2014), Hamburg will once again be enraptured with cruising. The Hamburg Cruise Days 2014 will see a total of seven cruise ships in the city. The first ships – the “Delphin” and the “Europa” – will arrive on 1 August. On Saturday, 2 August the “Gann”, “AIDAstella”, “Deutschland”, “Europa”, and “MSC Magnifica” will be mooring in the city. The last ships to arrive will be the “Deutschland” and the “AIDAluna” on 3 August, all together turning the port into Europe’s cruise hot spot as well as presenting them at a spectacular parade. In addition to this, the “Blue Port” light installation will bathe the port in a magical light. Along the river there will be a unique cruise mile with numerous culinary highlights, charming cabaret and entertainment as well as shopping, maritime markets and culture. Cruise Days were held for the first time in 2008 and since then have developed into a magnet for the public. The usual cycle - every two years on even years - will be interrupted one time only as of 2015 for the benefit of the new cruise week. As of then, the Hamburg Cruise Days and Seatrade Europe, the leading European trade fair of the cruise industry, will take place on the premises of the Hamburg exhibition grounds at the same time every two years. This temporary consolidation is already being included in the current planning of Hamburg Cruise Days 2014. “With a total of 43 ship’s calls; the Hamburg Cruise Days 2014and a corresponding passenger volume of approx. 125 000 August will be the absolute high point of the year,” said Gerd Drossel, managing director Hamburg Cruise Center.
MTN will provide products designed to fulfill the needs of each line’s unique passenger segment. These products include communications, entertainment and content sharing, crew welfare solutions and corporate operations. “MTN works hard to maintain a reputation of constantly evolving communications solutions for the most customer-centric brands sailing to remote locations around the world,” said Brent Horwitz, senior vice president and general manager, cruise and ferry services, MTN. “We are excited to expand our partner base to serve these customers through our unmatched, global hybrid satellite and terrestrial broadband network. MTN regularly caters to luxury brands with thousands of crew and passengers per voyage. We take pride in exceeding the highest possible expectations of quality service at sea and welcome these organizations to the MTN family.” Alongside Lindblad Expeditions, the following operators have contracted with MTN based on the company’s value proposition and reputation for service excellence: Pearl Seas Cruises has selected MTN as service provider for its inaugural ship, the 210 passenger Pearl Mist, which was recently launched in Baltimore. The line is offering a new, intimate, luxury service catering to travelers touring the Americas and the Caribbean, and provides them with a backstage pass to the culture, customs and cuisine of these regions’ most beautiful destinations – many of which are not accessible by large ships. Guests enjoy personalized service, luxury accommodations and amenities, fine dining, enriching onboard activities, and guided shore excursions. Windstar is a sailing luxury small ship cruise line offering the feel of a private yacht with well-appointed amenities, gourmet cuisine, exceptional service and exotic ports of call. Windstar sails to the Greek Isles, Italy, Europe, the Caribbean, Tahiti, Asia and Arabia. The operator is renewing its ten-year relationship with MTN, including plans to leverage service on its two newest ships, the Star Breeze and Star Legend, bringing the total fleet to six. MTN was first in the industry to deliver broadband VSAT (very small aperture terminal) satellite communications to a U.S. Navy vessel. The company brings more than 30 years’ experience in continually innovating communications solutions at sea.
Trimline Appoint Andrew Richards as new CEO
Carnival UK fundraisers scale new heights for Seafarers UK
Trimline, Southampton-based marine interior refurbishment specialist, has appointed Andrew Richards as its new Chief Executive Officer.
This year’s Seafarers UK 24 Peaks Challenge attracted 14 teams from maritime companies who raised more than £67,000 to help seafarers in need, their families and dependants.
Richards, currently Group Key Account Director at Survitec Group Ltd, will take up his post at Trimline on the 7 August and his role will see him strategically lead the company through the biggest development phase in its history as Trimline prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2015.
Taking place on the weekend of 12-13 July in the UK’s Lake District, the 24 Peaks Challenge is one of the most demanding but rewarding charity team events. Teams of five walkers scale 24 peaks in 24 hours. Each peak on the 32 mile course is over 2,400 feet, including Scafell Pike, the highest in England. The event was sponsored this year by TK Foundation.
Trimline has undergone its largest expansion in recent years with 12 new vacancies created within the last year alone and the number of employees reaching 100. Turnover at the company has now exceeded £20 million and this is anticipated to increase to £30 million within the next five years. Gary Oliver, Managing Director at Trimline Ltd, said: “We are delighted to welcome Andrew to Trimline. With 21 years of experience within the marine industry, his knowledge will help Trimline continue to expand and manage its growing portfolio of ship maintenance and projects whilst providing direction and leadership to our ever-expanding staff.” Andrew Richards said: “I am thrilled to be joining Trimline at such an exciting stage in its development. The opportunity to work within an innovative, forward-thinking company is one that I am very much looking forward to and I look forward to developing established relationships with Trimline’s staff and partners.” The move to expand the company comes after the addition of an electrical and catering department in 2013 to bring more expertise inhouse and increase the support offered to partners. Tony Body has also been appointed to the newly created role of Director of Site Projects to help position the company for further growth. Trimline has managed a number of large-scale refurbishment projects in the last year including: Red Falcon for Red Funnel and Isle of Wight Ferries, Star Pride for Windstar Cruises, Ben My Chree for Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, HMA Scott and RFA Fort Victoria for the Ministry of Defence, Thomson Dream for Thomson Cruises, Queen Mary 2 for Cunard and the luxury yacht MY Shemara.
Companies taking part included Allmode, Bernhard Shulte Shipmanagement, Carisbrooke Shipping, Carnival UK, InterManager, KVH Media Group, ShipServ, Steamship Mutual and Teekay Shipping. Special congratulations go to the two teams from Carisbrooke Shipping who raised £5,947 each and won the charity’s top fundraisers prize. Donations to participating teams can still be made here http://www.seafarers-uk.org/challengeevents/24-peaks-challenge/ Said Nigel Shattock, Seafarers UK’s Director of Fundraising and Communications: ‘This year’s 24 Peaks proved to be a great success both for the 14 intrepid teams that took part and for Seafarers UK in terms of the fundraising that it enabled for the charity. The mental and physical feats involved in the challenge are quite something to behold and it requires a really collaborative effort for all the participants from each team to get to the finish line. It is a wonderful event to be involved in, and we are already looking forward to staging it again in 2015.’ This year 12 teams managed to complete the gruelling two-day hike, with many of them already pledging to take part again next year as they gathered together in the Sunday evening sun for a barbecue on the shore of Lake Windermere. www.seafarers.uk

Superlative cruising encounter – a fleet of 7 cruise ships attract 600,000 visitors to the 4th Hamburg Cruise Days It was ‘time to say goodbye’ to the Deutschland and AIDAstella last Sunday, not only for the cruise passengers, but also for the many visitors to the 4th Hamburg Cruise Days. For three days the city was totally consumed by the laid back maritime cruising atmosphere that prevailed along the four-kilometre length of the event area. Blessed with midsummer temperatures, 12 cruise theme islands between HafenCity and Altona provided a range of sporting, artistic and cultural offerings as well as a highly diverse entertainment programme. Taking centre stage at the event and a real marvel for the around 600,000 visitors were the seven cruise ships: the AIDAluna and AIDAstella (both AIDA Cruises), the DEUTSCHLAND (Reederei Peter Deilmann GmbH), MS Delphin (Passat Cruises), MS EUROPA (Hapag-Lloyd Cruises), the MSC Magnifica (MSC Cruises) and the Gann. A unique atmosphere also engulfed the spectacular Hamburg Cruise Days parade, the absolute highlight of the event. To the awe of the visitors and accompanied by individual firework displays, four of the cruise ships sailed down the Elbe in front of the harbour, which was spectacularly illuminated in blue by artist Michael Batz. The response of Gerd Drossel, managing director of Hamburg Cruise Center e.V., was commensurately positive, “With Hamburg Cruise Days and similar events like cruise ships christening we are bringing cruising home. Such events offer a perfect platform for cruise lines to showcase their products and highlight the cruising theme, subsequently delivering a win-win situation for all those involved as also many tourists come from all across Germany spending their weekend in the Hanseatic city. In this respect Hamburg is the ideal stage for the cruise ships and cruise lovers providing the backdrop for images that go all around the world.” A total of 18,000 cruise passengers were handled during the Cruise Days weekend. As the busiest month in 2014 with 43 arrivals, August has more maritime highlights in store for cruising enthusiasts. On Sunday 10 August, Hamburg will welcome the Legend of the Seas (Royal Caribbean), the first of this season’s five turnaround arrivals. All in all, Hamburg is expecting a total of 190 cruise calls for 2014.

Cruise Portsmouth: new focus on cruising at Portsmouth International Port In a move to supply news for the cruise industry, Portsmouth International Port has just launched the first of two dedicated newsletters to the cruise side of its operation. The first edition of the newsletter comes as the Port focuses cruise marketing around the “Cruise Portsmouth” brand; reinforcing expertise, the high quality of service and the range of world class attractions available on the port’s doorstep. Travel agents have visited the Port for education and awareness both independently and through events with CLIA. These events have proved popular with the industry and often tie in with cruise ship visits onboard. Click here to see the newsletter online. Britain’s best-connected cruise port has steadily built a business dealing with small to medium sized cruise liners, often operating in the luxury explorer ship sector. Disembarkation is processed quickly and passengers arrive in a spacious, light airy terminal to collect their luggage and depart. Access to the railway and motorway is easy and passengers can be on their way quickly. Cruise ship embarkation is handled at dedicated check in desks and travel to the quayside for boarding is by regular shuttle bus transport. Managers at the Port wanted to share their stories of success, and show people what a great destination Portsmouth is for cruise customers and their passengers. The new service also gives operators a chance to meet the team who has built Portsmouth’s cruise business, giving them an idea of what makes them tick. Rupert Taylor, Harbour Master at Portsmouth International Port, said, “We have a great story to share with cruise operators about the first class facilities at our Port, and the world class attractions passengers can visit in the city. Our team has worked hard to deliver tailored services that really work well for all our cruise operators and, of course, their passengers. By focusing on Cruise Portsmouth we hope to encourage even more operators to discover the benefits of a visit to our wonderful waterfront city.” Portsmouth International Port will be taking a newly commissioned Cruise Portsmouth stand to Seatrade Med in Barcelona next month. Captain Rupert Taylor will be at the important exhibition, meeting and greeting current and potential customers of the Port in front of a giant image of HMS Victory - just one of many visitor attractions popular with Portsmouth’s cruise passengers. Carnival Pride To Operate Special 10- To 14-Day Caribbean Sailings, Five-Day Bermuda Cruise From Baltimore And San Juan In 2015-16
Queen Victoria to Undergo Multi-Million Pound Refit at Blohm+Voss Shipyard January 2015 Cunard Line’s Queen Victoria will enter the Blohm & Voss Shipyard in Hamburg in January 2015 for a multi-million pound refit.
For the first time, Carnival Pride will operate a series of 10- to 14-day Caribbean cruises round-trip from Baltimore and one-way between Baltimore and San Juan, featuring some of the region’s most breathtaking destinations, as well as new five-day Bermuda cruises and unique six- and eight-day Caribbean/Bahamas voyages, which will begin in October 2015. Gerry Cahill, Carnival’s president and CEO said, “Our guests and travel agent partners have been seeking more varied options from the North East – particularly longer length voyages – and we’re delighted to expand our schedules from Baltimore and San Juan to provide these attractive ‘Fun Ship’ cruise offerings from these ports. These new voyages not only provide holidaymakers with an abundance of five- to 14-day cruise choices, but also feature a wide range of spectacular island destinations throughout the Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda”.
Following the success of Queen Elizabeth’s recent refit at the same yard, Queen Victoria’s makeover will create nine single staterooms on the ship for the first time, re-modelled from part of the ship’s casino. In addition, carpets are being renewed throughout and large flat-screen TVs – mostly 32” or above – are being installed in all passenger staterooms while in the ship’s informal Lido restaurant, waiters will in the future serve hot drinks at all meals. As on Queen Elizabeth, sun awnings will be erected on the open area near the stern Lido pool and on both sides of the Grills Upper Terrace area near the top of the ship to offer more shade on deck. In the shopping area on board the footprint is increasing significantly, new Fine Jewellery and Watch shops are opening and the layout, lighting and overall shopping experience for passengers is being enhanced.
One-of-a-Kind 10- to 14-Day Caribbean Cruises Carnival Pride will operate a series of 10-, 11- and 14-day cruises either round-trip from Baltimore or one-way between Baltimore and San Juan in 2015 and 2016. The voyages include an 11-day exotic southern Caribbean cruise from Baltimore to San Juan departing 17th January, 2016, with stops at Grand Turk, Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, and St. Croix; a 10-day exotic eastern Caribbean cruise from San Juan to Baltimore departing 28th January, 2016, calling at St. Thomas, Antigua, Dominica, St. Lucia; St. Kitts and St. Maarten and a 14-day eastern Caribbean cruise round-trip from Baltimore 13th March, 2016, featuring eight different island destinations: Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Thomas, Dominica, St. Lucia, Martinique, Antigua and St. Maarten.
On the technical front, scrubber technology is being installed aboard Queen Victoria to match that now aboard Queen Elizabeth in line with the company’s commitment to minimising its environmental impact. This involves the installation of a filtration system for the exhaust gas from the ship’s engines.
During these voyages, guests can relax on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, enjoy a host of shopping, dining and sightseeing opportunities, experience unique Caribbean cultures and visit centuries-old landmarks and attractions.
The dry-docking is being brought forward as a bearing on one of the ship’s propulsion units will need replacing prior to her previously scheduled dry dock in December 2015. This has no impact on the safety of the ship but it is timely for the bearing to be replaced prior to the ship’s Round World Cruise beginning 20 January 2015.

Additionally, three six-day Bahamas cruises operating round-trip from Baltimore and featuring visits to Freeport and Nassau will be offered. These value-packed cruises, which depart 30th November and 20th December, 2015, and 14th February, 2016, provide consumers with a new short duration cruise option from Baltimore at an incredible value. Cunard Director Angus Struthers said: “Queen Victoria’s multi-million pound refit will ensure this much-loved ship remains in tip-top condition for her World Cruise in 2015 and beyond.”
As a result, two Queen Victoria sailings have unfortunately needed to be cancelled, a 12-night cruise to the Canaries 3-15 January and a short five-night trip to Amsterdam and Cherbourg 15-20 January 2015. Passengers (and their travel agents) have been informed. A Future Cruise Credit of £100 per person is being offered to all affected passengers which can be used in conjunction with any alternative Cunard booking made for cruises departing within the next two years (before 3 January 2017). Full refunds of any monies paid will also be available should affected passengers not be in a position to rebook an alternative cruise with Cunard. Angus Struthers: “While we are sorry to be cancelling the two cruises, we are looking forward to welcoming all those affected back aboard a Cunard ship in the near future, perhaps on Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth, both of which will be sailing in 2015 fresh from their make-overs.”
Regal Princess to be named by cast of The Love Boat Princess Cruises has announced its newest ship will be named by the original cast of US TV show, The Love Boat. Regal Princess, a 3-560 guest ship that first set sail in May this year, will be christened on November 5, 2014 by the cast who will subsequently serve as ‘godparents’. The ceremony will take place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and officially launch Princess Cruises’ golden anniversary celebrations. The line, which began sailing in 1965, will mark five decades of operation from the end of this year and throughout 2015. The Love Boat was a romantic comedy show that ran for ten seasons from 1977-1987 and became one of the highest rated and longest-running programmes on US television. It was mostly set on board Princess Cruises ships and is credited with helping the industry expand to its current size. The main six Love Boat cast members will reunite to christen Regal Princess: Gavin MacLeod (Captain Stubing), Fred Grandy (Gopher the chief purser), Ted Lange (Isaac the bartender), Bernie Kopell (Doc, the ship’s doctor), Lauren Tewes (Julie the cruise director) and Jill Whelan (Vicki the Captain’s daughter). After its naming, Regal Princess will begin its maiden season of Caribbean cruising. Paul Ludlow, Princess Cruises’ managing director UK and Europe, said: “It’s fitting that Regal Princess will be named by
The Love Boat cast as the event will perfectly mark the past and future of Princess Cruises. The show was key to our success and the cast are a great choice to help kick-start our anniversary celebrations.” Regal Princess is sister ship to Royal Princess, which was launched last year by HRH, The Duchess of Cambridge. The ship is the 18th in the Princess Cruises fleet and has: • Capacity for 3,560 guests • 1,780 staterooms • 19 decks • 1,346 crew • 16 bars and restaurants including three dining rooms • A spa and fitness centre The ship also includes several signature Princess Cruises’ features including SeaWalk, a top-deck glass-bottomed walkway that extends 28 feet over the edge of the ship, and Princess Live, a television studio with on board programming throughout the day. At a length of 1,083 feet, Regal Princess is longer than the height of the Shard, the tallest building in the UK. And at 217 feet high is taller than 15 double-decker London buses stacked on top of one another. Last month Princess Cruises revealed that it has reached an agreement to build a 600m euro sister ship to Regal Princess and Royal Princess, which will launch in 2017. CLIA Europe celebrates “interior” revolution in cruising CLIA Europe, the association representing Europe’s multibillion euro cruise industry, wishes to celebrate the “interior” revolution cruising has been going through in the last years. It is easy to overlook what goes on in the inside of a cruise ship when one is used to seeing the world’s shipyards continuously deliver impressive, beautiful, state of the art cruise ships. And yet, the amount of time, resources and imagination cruise lines put into the interior design of their ships is by no means less impressive. Indeed, many cruise lines now work with world-renowned hospitality designers to ensure a beautiful atmosphere indoors, recognising that ambience is an essential part of the cruise experience. Cruise ships now feature exciting public areas that result in stunning on-board ambiance. Think about checking the latest fashion from the world’s most famous high street brands while at sea. This is already possible in many cruise ships, which feature large, high-end malls. Or perhaps enjoying an exhibition from world-renowned painters at an art gallery on-board. Cruise lines are very conscious of the diversity of their passengers, and continually try to improve the common space within their ships in order to accommodate all audiences. Cruise ships now include children areas where the youngest passengers can have fun, teenage lounges including beanbags and computer games, and a range of exciting bars where adults can enjoy their favourite drinks. Talking about dining venues, cruise lines continuously strive to recreate the taste and atmosphere of different countries for their passengers. It is now possible to have a chef cook your meal on a griddle at the table right in front of you on-board, in
true Japanese style. Or to enjoy a delicious Italian pizza, cooked in an authentic wood-fired oven. This internal revolution does not stop at the common areas and public spaces. Passengers can also enjoy the latest design trends in the cabins that they occupy. Some of the newest cruise ships include two-level loft suites that will make anyone believe that they are in downtown Manhattan. You will have to look at the incredible sea views through the double-height windows to realise where you are! But not all the cabins in a cruise ship face the seas...not to worry: some cruise lines have got around this problem by fitting huge LED screens on the cabins’ walls, transmitting live footage of the sea views. Bored of looking at the sea? Just switch the channel and watch a movie, or your favourite sport. River cruise ships, whose popularity in Europe continues to increase, are also a part of this revolution. Due to their small sizes, the trend is to maximize the available space to the maximum so as to deliver one-of-a-kind luxury boutique yet spacious cruise ships. River cruise ships now feature beautiful large staterooms and two-story lobbies, glass elevators, twin balconies, swimming pools…even cascading waterfalls! This revolution would of course not be complete without some real sporting action. After all, going on holiday should never be an excuse to stop looking after yourself and practicing your favourite sport. Cruise ships now include a wide range of sports activities on board. From tennis to rock-climbing, sports enthusiasts have plenty of things on board to keep themselves busy. Robert Ashdown, CLIA Europe’s Secretary General, said: “I wish to pay tribute to our cruise line members, who continue to work hard and innovate to offer the best possible cruising experience to all their passengers, no matter who they may be. Whether you are male or female, old or young, enjoy traditional Mediterranean or oriental cuisine, you will find something for you on board cruise liners.”
European Waterways “Takes Ten” in 2015 and declares the ‘Year of the Family’ European Waterways, Europe’s largest luxury hotel barge cruising company, has declared the 2015 cruise season “the year of the family,” offering up to 10% off the price of whole boat charters on ten of its most popular hotel barges in the fleet. Since the vessels hold from just 8 to 12 passengers, chartering a hotel barge guarantees a personal, private holiday, with the option to modify family-friendly itineraries to meet the unique needs of the group. “Family travel is one of the strongest growth markets in the cruise industry, with more families opting for unique new destinations and itineraries, as opposed to traditional vacations, such as theme parks and large ocean cruise ships, where families get lost in the crowd,” says Derek Banks, managing director of European Waterways. “Although our cruises are perfect for all types of small groups, we want to mark 2015 as an especially ‘familyfriendly’ year for hotel barging. We offer the kind of experiences that are tailor-made for today’s multi-generational families, with a wide range of activities that can be enjoyed by young children, teenagers, parents, and all the way up to grandparents.” Two of the ten barges with French itineraries ideal for a familyfriendly holiday in 2015, include: The 330-year-old Canal du Midi - aboard the intimate, 8-passenger Anjodi Among the family-friendly activities available on this holiday is a visit to the city of Carcassonne, the most complete medieval fortified city in existence. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city transports visitors back to the medieval era, allowing young minds to imagine a time of kings, damsels, and gallant knights. The 6-night itinerary also includes a visit to the unique Meze
Dinosaur Park and Museum, the largest museum in Southern France dedicated to dinosaurs. As an open-air exhibit, kids can’t miss the massive and realistic constructions that are waiting for them inside, such as the head of the Brachiosaur skeleton, the largest complete dinosaur skeleton in the world, which peers out above the treetops. The National Nature Reserve of Bagnas is another child-friendly destination, where guests can look out for more than 250 species of birds that include flamingos and other migratory birds. European Waterways is offering a 5% whole boat charter special for Anjodi that is applicable to 2015 departures on April 19 & 26 and all departures from May to August and in October. These must be booked by September 30, 2014. A 10% discount applies to the March 29, April 5 and April 12 departures, with no ‘bookby’ deadline. Cruise Burgundy Aboard the 8-passenger L’Art de Vivre Following a welcome champagne toast (soft drinks for the children!) on board in the medieval town of Auxerre, the vessel sets a course for the village of Vincelles, where options include a choice of swimming, supervised “go ape” tree climbing for the young, or a visit to Chablis to one of the town’s oldest wine cellars and a private tasting for the adults. Among other highlights is a visit to the caves of Arcy sur Cure, a natural phenomenon dug out by the Cure River; as well as cruising past the stunning natural rock cliffs of Saussois, a popular rock-climbing destination. There is also an excursion to the town of Vézelay, where adults can marvel at the Romanesque Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene, while “thrill-seekers” in the group can enjoy a canoeing, or rafting trip on the River Cure nearby. A 5% reduction in the whole boat charter price of L’Art de Vivre is available for the 2015 departures on April 19 and 26 and all departures from May to August and in October. These must be booked by September 30, 2014 to be eligible. A 10% off charter special is also available for the April 12 departure with no ‘bookby’ deadline.

CMV enjoying life at the top The cruise ship Marco Polo is currently listed Number Two on Cruise Critic’s ‘UK’s 10 most popular cruise ships’. The Cruise and Maritime Voyages (CMV) www.cruiseandmaritime.com 0844 414 6185 traditional country house style vessel is only beaten by P&O’s Ventura that carries 3,100 passengers compared to Marco Polo’s more modest up to 800. The ships’ popularity is determined by number of page views accrued over the past year. CMV’s Head of Marketing, Mike Hall said “This is a fitting third party endorsement of this fine cruise ship that will be 50 years old next year. She is no stranger to the limelight having been listed in April within the Sunday Mirror’s ‘Top 10 Best No Fly Cruises’ and again in June’s ‘Top 10 Best Small Ships’. Cruise Critic* writes “Marco Polo is an adults-only ship that, though far from luxurious, is comfortable and pleasant. And with less than 1,000 passengers, the onboard experience is about as far from the mass-market cruise ships as you can get.” * Full Review: cruisecritic.com CMV’s Marco Polo departs from the London Cruise Terminal at Tilbury and still has some availability for this year. Leaving on 21 August you can cruise to the Baltic cities and Russia’s St. Petersburg for 12 nights at prices from £699pp. Alternatively, if you like the idea of giving cruising a try, you can leave on 5 October and take a mini-cruise to Amsterdam for just two nights at a price from £149pp.

Riviera chic - Cunard’s Queen Victoria makes maiden call at St Raphael on the Cote d’Azur Heads turned when Cunard’s Queen Victoria made the cruise line’s maiden call at St Raphael on the Cote d’Azur at the weekend. The ship, with nearly one member of crew for each of her 2,000 passengers, was almost a week into her 14 night voyage from Southampton, having already called at Cartagena and Barcelona in Spain when she arrived in St Raphael’s bay on Saturday 2 August - a first for the Cunard fleet. After spending the day at anchor, Queen Victoria sailed east the same evening with her passengers looking forward to visiting Florence, Alghero in Sardinia, Gibraltar and La Coruna in Spain before arriving back in the UK on Sunday 10 August. Captain Peter Philpott, master of the 90,000 ton Queen Victoria, said; ‘It’s a privilege to bring Queen Victoria into a new port for the first time and to be in command of the first Cunard ship ever to sail into St Raphael makes the call particularly special. The Cote d’Azur is one of the most beautiful and most celebrated coastlines in the Mediterranean - it’s almost synonymous with summer holidays. I hope that this maiden visit proves to have been a joy for our passengers on board - it feels like we are the biggest yacht in this delightful bay - and for those along the shoreline who watched the ship arrive and set sail’.

Multi-million pound make-over for Aurora with new livery design
Princess Cruises to add new ship to fleet in 2017
Princess Cruises, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc, announced that it has reached an agreement with the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri to build a new ship, which will enter service in 2017. P&O Cruises has unveiled its plans for a £26 million pound makeover for Aurora this winter, the first ship in the fleet to receive the bold new livery design. The refurbishment will take place November 29 to December 18 in Hamburg, ahead of its Christmas and New Year cruise and before the South America & Pacific Adventure world cruise itinerary departing January 8, 2015. Launched in 2000, Aurora’s last refit was in 2009. The planned changes for 2014 include: • A new look livery design, which celebrates P&O Cruises heritage and its place as Britain’s favourite cruise company. It features a contemporary version of the Union Flag on its bow and new blue funnels with illuminated rising sun designs • The introduction of Sindhu restaurant for evening fine dining (replacing the library on deck 8) with an Indian fusion menu designed by Michelinstar celebrity chef Atul Kochhar • The Glass House restaurant and wine bar is replacing Café Bordeaux on deck 8. Available for brunch, lunch and dinner it will house wine displays and wines selected by expert and TV presenter Olly Smith. Enomatic wine systems allow passengers to buy premium wines by the glass. There will also be a private room for wine tastings and dinners • A complete refurbishment of the buffet restaurant (Lido deck, deck 12) with new décor • In the evening, The Beach House menu replaces the Pennant Grill menu to include family favourites such as Fillet of Beef on Lava Rock • A complete refurbishment of The Reef children’s clubs with room names changed to reflect Reef club names across the rest of the fleet • The introduction of Freedom Dining to Medina Restaurant with more tables for two and Marco Pierre White dishes on gala evenings • A refurbishment of the Sidewalk Café and the introduction of Costa Coffee and brand new “Grab and Go” counter, a great option for breakfast and lunch on the go • The library relocates to the current cyb@study space adjacent to the Crow’s Nest on deck 13 • Casino and Champions refurbishment with new open-plan design, new furniture and improved stage area for entertainment, live music and quizzes • Photography gallery upgrade to include more touch screen technology • An extensive shop refurbishment • Refurbishment of Oasis Spa • Upgrade of all sound and light equipment in the theatre and show lounge • New soft furnishings for all cabins with flat-screen TVs
P&O Cruises marketing director Christopher Edgington said: “This is a massive investment. It’s all part of our ongoing commitment to ensure continuous improvement of our ships and consistency across the fleet. “Both Ventura and Arcadia underwent huge multi-million pound refits last year and Aurora is the next in line with Azura planned for 2015. “Not only will Aurora feature firm favourites from Azura and Ventura, such as Sindhu and The Glass House restaurant and wine bar, but we will also see brand new initiatives as well as the distinctive new livery. “As the very first ship to display our new livery, we have big plans to welcome Aurora back in to Southampton. We can’t wait to see her.” To book a cruise on Aurora, contact P&O Cruises on 0843 374 0111, visit www.pocruises.com or visit your local agent.
The as-yet unnamed 143,000-ton vessel, which will be built at an all-in cost of approximately 600 million euros, will carry 3,560 passengers, and feature the successful design platform introduced by sister ships Royal Princess in 2013 and Regal Princess which entered service this May. The new ship will include the signature elements that have become synonymous with the Princess Cruises guest experience such as a central atrium hub with multiple dining, entertainment and retail venues; the adults-only Sanctuary; Movies Under the Stars cinema experience, and 80 percent of all staterooms with balconies. The ship will also include some brand-new innovations to enhance the guest experience even further. “We are incredibly excited to add this fabulous new ship to our already formidable fleet,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises president. “Royal Princess and Regal Princess have been exceptionally successful for us and have received numerous accolades from guests, travel agents and media, so adding another sister ship will enable us to continue to expand our innovative vacation experiences. We’re very pleased that this new ship order is an indication of the confidence that our parent Carnival Corporation has in the future of the Princess brand.” She added that this is the only new order Carnival Corporation & plc anticipates for 2017. Specific features and amenities for the ship, along with deployment details, will be revealed in the coming months. Giuseppe Bono, Fincantieri Chief Executive Officer, commented: “All the orders we win are important for our Group, but some are more special than others. The one we’re announcing today certainly belongs to this select category. In fact, it’s no coincidence that Fincantieri is the universally recognised leader among the builders of cruise ships. It’s a source of great pride to be able to immediately build another ship for a prestigious brand like Princess Cruises following the successful deliveries of two jewels like ‘Royal’ and ‘Regal’, which have already become part of maritime history.” Bono ended by saying, “Our objective has always been to build ships of the future, and thanks to the Carnival Group, the leading market player, which has reconfirmed its wellfounded confidence in us, we have proven over time not only to have kept faith with this ambitious goal but also to have been able to consolidate our world leadership in a sector of absolute technological excellence, like cruise ships.”

Trimline Create Demonstration Galley at Southampton Headquarters Trimline, Southampton-based marine interior refurbishment specialists, in partnership with MKN and support from Wexiödisk, Porkka, Halton Marine and Marine Systems Technology Ltd, is installing a demonstration galley at its Southampton headquarters. This state-of-the-art facility is being created to enable both suppliers and partners the opportunity to display and use the facilities, test new products and experience how they could work on ships within the replicated galley environment. The facility will be fitted with the latest technologies and products, helping ship operators understand the environmental benefits and financial savings that can be made by using the most innovative of galley technology. The galley will also function as a training venue for chefs to learn how to use new equipment. Another vital aspect will be the opportunity for chefs to replicate their own recipes within the Trimline galley to test the performance and taste quality of the equipment. A MKN Flexi Combi Oven and Flexi Chef, both with touch screen control panels, will be accompanied by an induction hob, a Wexiödisk undercounter dishwasher and a refrigerator and a combination fridge freezer from Porkka. A Halton Capture Jet hood with UV light technology and the latest energy saving M.A.R.V.E.L. system will complete the galley. Using infra-red sensors and other intelligent controls, the hood optimises the level of extraction saving operators both energy and money. Colin Stapley, Business Development Manager – Catering at Trimline, said: “The addition of a demonstration galley to Trimline is a fantastic step towards the company’s commitment towards our customers and suppliers. It is essential for us that we match cost, performance and energy savings with excellent products that produce outstanding food. The galley will allow us to show our clients exactly what these innovative products can do and allow them the opportunity to practise within the kitchen before they make a commitment.” Gary Oliver, Managing Director at Trimline, said: “This is a very exciting time for Trimline. Ahead of our 50th Anniversary in 2015, we are taking another step towards the progression of the company for the next 50 years. The galley will allow us to understand the catering needs of our client base, something that will be essential to the longevity of the company.” The demonstration galley is due to be completed at the beginning of October and will be welcoming its first guests at the end of October.
