CLIA holds first Technical & Regulatory Forum in London

More than 90 CLIA Cruise Line and Executive Partner Members have gathered in London to discuss a range of regulatory and technical challenges facing the cruise industry today including those related to the environment, tourism and consumer affairs, safety, security, and health. The inaugural session of CLIA’s Technical and Regulatory Forum provided an effective platform for the association’s Cruise Line and Executive Partner Members to feed into the work undertaken by CLIA with IMO, the EU, and other regulators around the world. The first Forum was held at the offices of CLIA Diamond Executive Partner Holman Fenwick Willan LLP. Keynote speakers included Bud Darr, Senior Vice-President of Technical and Regulatory Affairs, CLIA Global; David Dingle, Chairman, Carnival UK and Vice Chairman, CLIA Europe; Richard Pruitt, Director of Environmental and Public Health Programs, Royal Caribbean Cruises; and Tom Strang, Senior Vice President of Marine Operations, Costa Cruises. The Technical & Regulatory Forum is part of CLIA’s Executive Partner Programme, which serves companies and organisations active in the cruise industry’s value chain. Within this framework, CLIA seeks to organise events and conferences that are tailor-made for the different stakeholders the association serves. The second CLIA Port & Destination Community Summit will be held in Hamburg on 8 September. David Dingle, Chairman of Carnival UK and Vice Chairman of CLIA Europe, said: “CLIA’s transformation into a global association representing the interests of the entire cruise industry has translated into a greater need to foster debate between cruise lines and all other companies that are active in the industry’s value chain. We are glad that CLIA’s first Technical & Regulatory Forum has served to bring so many key players together and help the entire industry truly speak with one voice.” Bo Larsen, Vice-President for Port Engagement & European Executive Partner Members at CLIA, said: “Cruising is a dynamic, forward-thinking, and rapidly evolving industry within the broader shipping sector. As the cruise industry grows, so it is inevitable that we face greater scrutiny from regulators who are keen to ensure that cruise operations are safe and sustainable. “We believe that CLIA’s first Technical & Regulatory Forum will have served to keep our member cruise line members and executive partners engaged in the association’s dealings with national, regional and international legislators and regulators around the Globe.” Fred Danska, Director of Cruise Business at Wartsila, said: “I find these types of CLIA events invaluable in helping to fully understand the challenges being faced by our customers. We need to know their business inside out and being brought up to date on industry issues, together with networking in a relaxed environment, is very worthwhile.”

Passengers go ‘Wilde’ as one of World’s finest ships cruises into Portsmouth International Port

With a sleek white exterior that gives little clue to its spacious and luxurious interior, Europa 2 will cruise into Portsmouth International Port on Tuesday 2 June. Holding a coveted ‘Five Star Plus’ rating from travel guide Berlitz, Europa 2 is one of the world’s most desirable cruise ships. It will be making its first ever visit to the Waterfront City, bringing up to 500 guests for a day’s visit. Also enjoying the exclusive surroundings will be British singer Kim Wilde. The eighties pop sensation is headlining the onboard entertainment programme during the 13 day ‘Rediscover Old Europe’ cruise, a popular choice amongst the mainly German tourists. Passengers arrive from Honfleur at eight in the morning, and will have about twelve hours to explore the historical sights and landmarks of Portsmouth and the surrounding area. The ship will sail at nine in the evening, headed for St. Peter Port in Guernsey. At 225 metres long Europa 2 isn’t the largest cruise ship to dock at Portsmouth International Port, although it is the most luxurious of the larger liners that have called. Operator HapagLloyd describes her as having “all the promise of a yacht and the serenity of a small resort”. With eight restaurants serving high quality cuisine, guests are well catered for. With a maximum of 500 passengers onboard at any one time there’s a high level of attention too, provided by the 370 crew. Each suite has a balcony, with Europa 2 offering more space per guest than practically any other cruise liner. Captain Rupert Taylor, Harbour Master at Portsmouth International Port, said: “I’ll be delighted to present the Captain of Europa 2 with a plaque commemorating this important ship’s first visit to our city. Europa 2 really is one of the world’s leading cruise liners, and shows how operators such as Hapag-Lloyd are happy to trust us with their precious flag ships and clientele. I hope that we will be seeing her again in the near future.” Europa 2 is the first cruise liner to arrive at Portsmouth International Port in June, with another six calls and visits in the diary for the month. It follows a busy May when 13 cruise ships came to Portsmouth.

Hamburg welcomes you on board: The cruise capital of Hamburg hoisting its flags

In recent years, Hamburg / Germany has become an international hotspot for the cruise industry. This September the north German port city will bundle its cruise-themed events: based on the motto “Hamburg welcomes you on board”, both the general public and professionals from the cruise sector are invited to join the ten-day programme of events in Hamburg from 04 September to 13 September 2015. Highlights will include the public festival Hamburg Cruise Days and Seatrade Europe, Europe’s leading cruise industry event. With 189 ship arrivals and around 590,000 passengers in 2014, Hamburg has firmly established itself as Germany’s leading cruise destination – and has also made it to the top in international cruise industry rankings. The City of Hamburg has been responding to this development by hosting various industry events and public events, thereby raising Hamburg’s profile as an economically successful maritime destination. For the first time this September, several major events from the cruise sector will be collaborating: the Hamburg Cruise Days (11/09-13/09), Europe’s biggest public cruise event, and Seatrade Europe (09/09-11/09), the European trade fair for the cruise industry, are now joining forces to create the framework for a unique cruise-themed programme of events that will

bring tourists, service providers and industry experts to Hamburg every other year. Alongside these two large-scale events, Hamburg will also be hosting fvw Cruise Live (11/09), the one-day travel sales event for the cruise industry, as well as two additional trade events (08/0909/09) by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the world’s largest cruise industry association. The spectacular light installation Blue Port Hamburg (04/09-13/09) by light artist Michael Batz will create a unique setting for these maritime events by bathing the port and some of Hamburg’s main attractions in magical blue light for ten days. To bring Hamburg’s residents and guests on board during the programme of events, Hamburg will be hoisting its flags in the most literal sense: during the ten days, the motto “Hamburg welcomes you on board” will be highly visible across the city and provide the guiding theme for various cruise highlights. This will be complemented by a varied fringe programme by numerous cooperation partners from the retail, hospitality and port industries. For example, this year’s Harbourfront Literature Festival in Hamburg will be held during this period, retail shops in Hamburg’s city centre will pick up on the cruise topic, while the Port of Hamburg Marketing association will offer guided port tours, enabling participants to take a glimpse behind the scenes of Hamburg’s port and cruise companies. Frank Horch, Hamburg’s Minister of Economics, will act as patron for the “Hamburg welcomes you on board” campaign. “By bundling these highly visible events, Hamburg has the unique opportunity to sustainably strengthen its international relevance in the cruise industry and to be perceived as the cruise industry’s maritime centre of excellence by audiences worldwide,” said Mr Horch. For ten days in September, the port of Hamburg will once again be transformed into one big stage for Europe’s major maritime events. This is where cruise experts meet stakeholders from the maritime industry, and where cruise fans and cruise ship passengers celebrate on board and on shore. Business and leisure go hand in hand – the true Hamburg way.

I am delighted that our associations will collaborate in training travel agents and giving them the right tools to attract even more people to cruising in the Med and beyond. I am glad that, in taking this step, CLIA Europe and MedCruise will continue to engage with and invest in a sector of fundamental importance to our industry.”

Gdansk Hosts Cruise Baltic Meeting It was Poland’s port of Gdansk that hosted the recent Spring 2015 Cruise Baltic meeting attended by over 35 delegates representing 22 partner destinations from the Baltic Sea Region. During the 2-day business meeting held at the Scandic Gdansk Hotel, the representatives – from both ports and tourism organizations - joined Cruise Baltic Director, Claus Bødker for a comprehensive programme of activity; and in welcoming prestigious cruise line guests: Elisabetta De Nardo, Silversea Director of Port Operations; Tina Teichert, Shore Excursion Manager, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises; Javier Rodriguez Sanchez, Ports, Ground, Travel & Cruise Operations Director, Pullmantur Cruises; and Arkadiusz Robert Branka, Captain, mv Empress, Pullmantur Cruises. On day 1 the agenda featured an industry update by Claus Bødker; and the opportunity for private breakout face-to-face sessions between the cruise line representatives and Cruise Baltic destinations. Highlights on this first day, however, included a presentation and lively panel discussion - with contribution and participation by all the cruise line guests – on the issue of identifying “what do cruise lines expect port and destinations to deliver regarding guest experiences?”

Elisabettta De Nardo, Director of Port Operations, Silversea: “The new format, with the two participatory workshops, together with more 1-2-1 meetings, increased the interaction between cruise lines and destinations, which helps the networking and learning process. The spirit of constructive co-operation that has been created will certainly lead to successful business for all. “Since 2013 when I last joined a Cruise Baltic meeting, I have also been very impressed with the amount of news from the destinations - whether new initiatives for tours, news of port facility developments, or new port reception facilities for waste. “A better awareness of the members has shown the amazing commitment of this Association, a best practice which was inspiring for me. Definitely the best Cruise Baltic meeting that I have attended to date.” Tina Teichert, Shore Excursions Manager, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises: “The Cruise Baltic Meeting was very interesting to attend. It was great to speak with the destination managers in person (both tourism and port) and to be able to give them some feedback about what exactly Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and its guests require and expect when calling at a destination. It is the easiest and most effective way to improve the communication between the ship and the destination and make each call a unique experience.

“Especially for the smaller ports it´s a great opportunity to increase their level of familiarity - while at the same time, it was also the perfect occasion for me to learn about new ports we At a separate Workshop, attendees were also divided into groups might add to our itineraries.” to discuss the important topic of “Maximizing guest experiences Cruise Baltic is a network of cruise destinations in the Baltic Sea at the Baltic Sea destinations”. SCH Utilises Expertise To Service New Royal Caribbean International Cruise Ship Terminal operators Southampton Cargo Handling (SCH) are utilising their considerable experience in handling cruise vessels to service the biggest cruise ship to call in the port of Southampton. Royal Caribbean International’s Anthem of the Seas has marked her maiden call in the port with a busy schedule of short promotional cruises showing off the impressive 168,000 tonnes ship after she arrived from the builder’s yard in Germany. Anthem of the Seas has space for 4,180 passengers and will use Southampton as her base throughout the 2015 season, with SCH providing stevedoring services for the regular disembark and embark calls. SCH is also responsible for mooring and letting go the 348m. long ship. The latest giant cruise ship to be based in Southampton, Europe’s leading port for cruise ship turnarounds, demands a major operation to load general stores and handle passenger baggage. SCH Operations Director Kevin Hulme explained: “It is proving to be a busy first week of operations on the Anthem of the Seas with hundreds of tonnes of stores being loaded and we have fitted this around a busy schedule of short cruises before her official maiden voyage. We are used to handling RCI’s fleet of large ships and our expertise, combined with the ship’s latest handling technology, ensures that movements of stores and baggage can be completed swiftly and efficiently.”

Cruise Through France’s Finest Wine Regions on a Hotel Barge with European Waterways For those people who enjoy a glass of fine wine - perhaps a crisp Chablis or a full-bodied Minervois red; maybe an aromatic Riesling, or that aristocrat of sparkling wines, champagne – many of our hotel barges cruise right through the regions of France where these wonderful wines are produced. For example, Panache, a 12-passenger vessel with a doting crew of six, offers an enviable choice to wine enthusiasts. She will cruise for 5 weeks in May & June through Champagne on the delightful River Marne, with an itinerary that includes three private tastings at renowned champagne houses, a visit to the hilltop village of Hautvillers where the monk Dom Perignon discovered the ‘methode champenoise’ and a tour of Reims. Then, from July to October, the barge will cruise in Alsace on the Canal de la Marne au Rhin, with highlights that include a tour of the Route de Vins d’Alsace, a private wine tasting or two of Gewurtztraminer and Pinot Gris, and a visit to the beautiful city of Strasbourg. Alternatively, if red wine is more to their taste, wine enthusiasts will love our cruises on the rural canals of Burgundy, or along the historic Canal du Midi in the Languedoc. Burgundy boasts 60,000 acres of vineyards and the hotel barges L’Art de Vivre and La Belle Epoque cruise nearby on the Canal de la Bourgogne and the Canal du Nivernais. The chefs on board will prepare meals using wonderful local ingredients such as Charolais beef or escargots, matched with fine Burgundies like Savigny-Les-Beaune and Meursault. And of course, being Burgundy, there will be tastings at a renowned domaine, perhaps in Chablis, as well as visits to elegant châteaux, hilltop villages and riverside towns like Auxerre. Further south, the 300-year-old Canal du Midi meanders through France’s largest wine-growing region, Languedoc-Roussillon, where the distinctive Corbières and the much-envied A.O.C. Minervois wines are produced – perfect accompaniments to the fresh seafood and Provencale specialities served on board Anjodi. During a cruise on this classic 8-passenger hotel barge, passengers will sample wines at the 14th century winery of Château de Perdiquier and, this being Cathar country, also visit the fortified city of Carcassonne and the spectacular hilltop village of Minerve. Whatever their taste in wines, there truly is something for everyone. For more details: www.gobarging.com

CMV to enter French Cruise Market

British based Cruise Operator, Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV), is pleased to announce the sub-charter of the 16,144grt, 550 passenger cruise ship Azores from summer 2016 onwards to Rivages du Monde, the Paris based specialist cruise and tour operator. Cruise & Maritime Voyages also confirm that Azores will be re-named Astoria when she completes her UK summer 2015 season. Prior to the start of the 2016 French North European, Adriatic and Mediterranean summer season, Astoria will operate a two month ex-UK spring season. Christian Verhounig, CEO and Chairman of CMV commented, “We are committed to developing our international market presence and are delighted to have forged a business partnership with one of France’s most established and respected travel companies. We believe that by changing the name to Astoria the product presentation will be simpler and more in line with our smaller ship offering alongside the similarly named 600 passenger Astor in contrast to our larger mid-sized vessels; the Marco Polo and Magellan, adopting the explorer theme”.

In 2016 Astoria will commence her French business on 11th May under the Rivages du Monde brand as a home market product operating 14 North European, Greenland, Adriatic and Mediterranean sailings from Le Havre, Dunkirk, Ostend, Bordeaux and Marseille. Chris Coates, Commercial Director added, “We have been experiencing strong demand for Azores 2015 ex-UK regional summer programme. The introduction of Magellan to the fleet, which in 2016, will be operating year round, will enable Marco Polo to also be deployed regionally for part of the 2016 programme bolstering capacity and supporting Astoria’s spring season. This will increase year on year UK market capacity close to 70,000 annual carryings”. CMV’s summer 2016 programme goes on sale next month. Mr Casalino, 46, has lived and worked internationally for 20 years, leading various international marketing teams for Procter & Gamble Co., eBay (Europe) and, most recently, eDreams ODIGEO. He will report to Chief Executive Officer, Gianni Onorato. CEO Gianni Onorato said: “MSC Cruises is an ambitious young company that grew 800% in its first 10 years, quickly becoming the fourth biggest cruise line in the industry. We’re now on course for further exponential growth through a €5 billion plan to double our current fleet capacity by 2022, including through the introduction of seven ultra-modern ships in two state-of-theart prototypes.

“Riccardo’s broad international experience spanning travel, e-commerce and consumer goods will be pivotal as we continue to build the MSC Cruises brand in step with the company’s rapid and aggressive expansion programme. We need a worldclass management team to ensure that we continue to provide distinct, best-in-class cruises experiences, even as we evolve and grow.” Having served most recently as Group CMO for leading online travel company eDreams ODIGEO, in Barcelona, Mr Casalino managed a team of 120 people. Mr Casalino, who took up his post on 23 April, is the third addition to the MSC Cruises C-suite this year, following the arrival of a new Chief Communications Officer, in March, and Chief Information Officer, earlier this month. In other news, MSC Cruises announced this month that the first of its new Vista generation ships will be named MSC Meraviglia during the steel-cutting ceremony, at STX France’s Saint-Nazaire shipyard. Complementing that, the Company revealed that its new ultramodern “Seaside” class ship will sail year-round from Miami to the Caribbean.

At the same time, cosmetic repairs and modernization work were carried out on board: the Sansibar and the Sushi Restaurant Sakura were fully redesigned and the eight family apartments were renovated to be even more family friendly. The full list comprised approximately 700 changes and improvements. The EXPERIENCE.tv SPECIAL “EUROPA 2 – The Refresh” showcases what happened on board during the luxury vessel’s docking period. Click here to see the latest film online: http://www.hl-cruises.com/social-media/experiencetv Over 600 specialists, from 80 mostly international companies, spent the last two weeks working on modernizations, cosmetic repairs and various structural elements on the ship. Over 4,500 m2 (15,000 ft.) of new carpet were laid and 2,000 litres (528 lbs.) of paint were applied to the ship. The modernization work focused mainly on the Sansibar. The most popular bar on board was given a new look and is now even more authentic, with wood paneling, room dividers in the form of wine crates with integrated seating, and a “chandelier” consisting of 1,000 wine bottles, giving the Sansibar a true beach bar atmosphere. After their modernization, the eight family apartments are even more tailored to the needs of families, with a section of each split suite converted especially for children and teenagers, and includes a baby changing table, a children’s bathroom with bathtub, bunk beds (one of which is a Pullman couch), a play area with a painting and games table, and a gaming console (PS4). The Sushi Restaurant Sakura on Deck 9 was also redesigned, with a new warm violet tone color scheme, wooden lights and room dividers featuring built-in LED candles. The atmosphere will now match that of a Japanese sushi restaurant. At 18:00 hrs. CEST this evening, after spending two weeks in the dock and now sparkling like new, the EUROPA 2 will set off on its eight-day cruise from Hamburg to Hamburg via Rouen/France, Antwerp/Belgium, Ghent/Belgium and Amsterdam/Netherlands. In January this year, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises launched EXPERIENCE.tv, a new, visual initiative - presented by UK cruise expert Jonathan Beaumont - to create more awareness of the cruise style and concept offered on board the EUROPA 2. The ship has been awarded 5-stars-plus by the Berlitz Cruise Guide 2015. Click here to see the latest film online: http://www.hl-cruises.com/social-media/ experiencetv

Seafair Summer Festival

This June marks the beginning of Seattle’s 65th annual Seafair Summer Festival. The festival kicks off on June 10th and ends on August 16th. Back in 1950 the first Seafair festival lasted 10 days. Nowadays the festivities take place over a two-month period and feature events such as the Rock’n Roll Seattle marathon (and half marathon), the Seafair pirates landing, and the Seafair torchlight parade. The parade showcases energetic drill teams, enormous helium balloons, marching bands and community floats that show off each community’s uniqueness and heritage. Seafair weekend (from 31st July to 2nd August) is tipped to be one of the festival’s highlight with a packed schedule of activities: the Albert Lee Appliance Seafair Cup - the world’s fastest powerboats race on the waters of Lake Washington as well as the Hyperlite Seafair Wakeboard Experience - where some of the world’s best wake boarders will perform tricks and flips in the water. To name but a few… The festival will finish on a high with Fleet Week, a tradition since 1950. During this week, US and Canadian military vessels will arrive in the Port of Seattle from all over the world.

Cruisers Take A Walk On The Wild Side With Top Photography Tips Reaching magnificent destinations by sea, often inaccessible by land, presents travellers with a glimpse of life far from home and the opportunity to capture some of the most stunning wildlife imagery across the globe. To help cruise passengers make the most of the exceptional photo opportunities along their journey, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has teamed up with wildlife photographer, Christine Shepard, to give her top tips. Christine Shepard is recognised as one of the world’s most promising young wildlife photographers and was named a finalist in two categories of the 2014 BBC’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year. From migratory songbird-watching in Alaska, to shark, squid and killer whale spotting in Australia, there has never been a better choice of wildlife cruise itineraries than this year. Based in Hawaii, Shepard already offers a wide portfolio of specialist ocean photography. Here, she offers her top five tips on the best ways to capture wildlife, including her all-important three ‘p’s: patience, presence and persistence. 1) Know your camera, inside and out! Whether you are shooting with a point-and-shoot, DSLR, or even a camera phone, take some time before your trip to learn how to use it. 2) Watch where the sun is and how to use it. For most wildlife photography, the sun is most likely your primary source of light – try taking shots in early mornings and evenings to capture the glowing, golden light. 3) Choose the right shutter speed. If you’ve done your homework with the camera manual, switch to ‘burst’ mode. This will take multiple photos in a sequence, giving you a better chance of catching that special moment – some wildlife can move just a little too fast to snap! 4) Move your subject out of the middle. It seems logical to keep the most important part of your photo in the middle, but actually moving it a bit to the left or right can make your image more dynamic - this is called the ‘rule of thirds’. 5) Three ‘p’s: patience, presence and persistence. When photographing wildlife, you are on Mother Nature’s terms. Be patient with the animal and remain calm. Whether you’re waiting for a tiny tropical gecko or a giant Alaskan moose, it’s ultimately up to them when they will move. Staying present in the moment will not only give you greater insight into your surroundings and potential subjects or framing, but will also open your eyes to the wonderful experience of being in nature. And finally, persistence. Each time you pick up your camera, you’ll learn something new and improve your skills. It’s a continuous journey of learning and discovery.

Anton Du Beke & Arlene Phillips complete Strictly line-up for 2015 cruises

As the first Strictly Come Dancing themed cruise in 2015 shimmies around the Med, P&O Cruises has confirmed the guest judges joining later this year will be none other than Strictly pro dancer and household favourite Anton Du Beke and former judge Arlene Phillips. Anton and Arlene complete the line-up for P&O Cruises hugely popular Strictly themed cruises in 2015. Anton will be guest judge on Azura’s 14-night fab-u-lous Baltic escape in June, while Arlene will now be joining Britannia’s ballroom-tastic 14-night Canary Islands cruise in July. As one of Strictly’s most popular professional dancers, Anton has been with the show since the series started in 2004 and will be returning to the BBC line-up for 2015. Arlene has also been a part of the Strictly family since its launch and most recently has been giving her expert views on BBC2’s It Takes Two. This year’s Strictly cruises include 2014’s professional finalists Karen Hauer, Kevin Clifton and Kristina Rihanoff as well as series 12 winner Pasha Kovalev. Each cruise will feature four of the show’s favourite professional dancers with the opportunity to meet them and maybe learn a move or two from the experts themselves during the regular dance classes. Also joining each cruise will be a guest judge to offer a Strictly experience to remember. The Strictly team will offer up close and personal interviews on board, photo and meet and greet opportunities, and spectacular Strictly Come Dancing showcase performances produced by BBC Worldwide. P&O Cruises will also be joined again by a team from DanceSport International, official designers and suppliers of dresses and costumes to the show: a stunning selection of these costumes will be on display around the ship, and available to buy, with organised fashion events to showcase them at their very best.

Passengers can also participate in a dance competition culminating in grand finale performances in the ship’s main theatre, with a judging panel including a Strictly professional dancer and guest judge.

Emotional Anzac Service As Queen Elizabeth Sails Off Gallipoli Peninsula

Almost 500 Australians and New Zealanders joined their fellow passengers on the decks of Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth for a very special memorial service as the ship sailed the waters off the Gallipoli Peninsula this morning. Marking Cunard’s long-standing association with Australian and New Zealand wartime campaigns, including Gallipoli, the emotional ceremony saw the ship’s crew and guests lay wreaths in the water in remembrance of the heroic soldiers who fought in the First World War campaign. A two-metre high poppy wall floral tribute, shaped as ‘100’ to mark the Anzac centenary, formed the centrepiece for the ceremony. The wall was filled with 11,500 red poppies donated by Australians and New Zealanders during Queen Elizabeth’s calls to Auckland and Sydney as part of her current world cruise, with the flowers representing the number of Anzacs killed during the campaign. Visitors to the poppy wall in Auckland and Sydney also wrote personal messages in a special remembrance book, with a selection of those read at this morning’s service. The book will be placed in the ship’s library where it will remain in memory of the heroes of Gallipoli. Queen Elizabeth’s visit to the waters of Gallipoli on Anzac Day eve, comes during her 112-night world voyage. The ship will arrive into Istanbul early on Anzac Day when some guests will disembark to continue their journey to Gallipoli. Captain Inger Klein Thorhauge said she was honoured to bring Queen Elizabeth’s guests to the waters of Gallipoli for such a significant occasion. “The Anzac story resonates for all of us at Cunard. Our connection with the armed forces of Britain, New Zealand and Australia runs very deep. Cunard has supported the services going back to the Crimean War. During the First World War, 20 Cunard ships and many of their crew were lost. It is a legacy of service of which we at Cunard are very proud.” Guests of honour at the service included Herb Christophers from New Zealand and Mark Keys from Australia, both descendants of Anzac soldiers, who travelled onboard Queen Elizabeth as custodians for the poppies on their journey to Gallipoli. Mr Christophers said the voyage was a healing experience, as his family lost four of five sons – including his great grandfather – to World War One: “The war was supposed to be over by Christmas 1914, instead it lasted four long years. The Christophers family lost a son for each of those four years. This journey is a positive way to remember the sacrifices made by a generation of my family.” Mr Keys said he was honoured to be part of Cunard’s Anzac voyage and planned to visit the Lone Pine memorial site of his great grandfather, who was killed on his third day at Gallipoli: “This is the first opportunity for any member of our family to visit Gallipoli and this 100th anniversary will be a long-treasured memory.” Some popular traditions that live on as Anzac folklore have been taken onboard Queen Elizabeth during its cruise to Gallipoli including a friendly game of ‘two-up’ played on the ship’s decks and Anzac biscuits served as part of the afternoon tea in the Queens Room. The ship has also organised a screening of Peter Weir’s 1981 classic ‘Gallipoli’ movie as well as informative talks from Gallipoli historians as part of Cunard’s highlyregarded speaker program.

“At the same time, we’re excited to provide two terrific ‘Fun Ship’ holiday choices with Carnival Ecstasy sailing from Charleston and Carnival Fantasy from Miami,” she added. Carnival Victory to Offer Seven-Day Cruises from San Juan Carnival Victory will reposition to San Juan to offer a week-long southern Caribbean cruise schedule beginning 6th November, 2016. CMV’s Marco Polo takes on Britannia Cruise and Maritime Voyages (CMV) Marco Polo took on the might of Britannia recently. From the picturesque Norwegian village of Flåm many Marco Polo passengers began sending out social media photos of the cruise industry’s ‘David and Goliath’. Head of Marketing at CMV, Mike Hall said “We have had some wonderful shots sent to us and we are grateful to so many of our passengers, in particular Karen Bradbury for this particular shot.” One passenger, Mark Greenhalgh, a much travelled cruiser who was on board Marco Polo said “This shows the difference between classic cruising and the big new ships. On Marco Polo with open, tiered, aft decks you get to experience a true sailaway, seeing your destination slip away from sight as you leave, whereas most new ships have a sailaway party on the top deck around the pool where you can’t see anything. We had a fantastic time and took some really amazing pics.” Mike Hall said “It brings it home to us all at CMV that operating a fine classic ocean liner, especially one that is celebrating her 50th Birthday, has many advantages. The travelling public has never had so much choice to go cruising. The fact that CMV is more than 85% sold already for this year indicates that the traditional style of smaller ship British cruising is alive and doing very well.” Picture taken in Flåm, Norway by Karen Bradbury

Carnival Cruise Lines Releases High-Energy Video Tour Of New Carnival Vista Hosted By... Carnival Vista Produced in a style that expresses the fun and awe-inspiring features of Carnival Cruise Line’s newest, largest and most innovative ship, Carnival Vista’s new video tour is a distinct departure from most new ship overviews. Narrated by the ship itself in a carefree wise-cracking female voice that mirrors Carnival Vista’s online social media persona, the video ranges from bird’s-eye overhead views of the vessel to swooping careens through engaging public spaces and expansive outdoor decks. The video also highlights the openness and indoor-outdoor integration of Carnival’s newest ship, set to debut in Europe in May 2016. The video can be viewed by clicking here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_E4LySdEi8&feature=youtu.be. The video opens with a three-quarter exterior panoramic view of Carnival Vista plying sunny seas as the voice-over introduces herself and sets the casual, conversational tone the narration employs throughout the five-minute segment. The tour begins with a fly through the atrium, anchored at its centre by a three-deck-high LED column with ever-changing colours and shapes extending from the centre of the atrium bar. From there, it’s on to the main pool area where the RedFrog Rum Bar and BlueIguana Tequila Bar are situated on a bright yellow deck filled with blue deck chairs. The video sweeps up to SportSquare, Carnival’s top-deck center of physical activities ranging from a running track and mini golf to a rope course and SkyRide — Carnival’s groundbreaking suspended cycling experience which Carnival Vista describes as “mind-blowing.” Still on the outer decks, the video swoops in on WaterWorks and its colorful Kaleid-O-Slide, the line’s first raft-riding water tube slide. The pace slows down for a look at the relaxing Tides Pool on the aft deck that provides a panoramic ocean view and a great place to, as the Carnival Vista says, get lost in a “deep-sea thought.” The video then plunges into the Lido dining area with its 24-hour pizzeria, New England–inspired Seafood Shack serving lobster rolls and other fare, and Guy’s Burger Joint, designed by celebrity chef Guy Fieri. That’s followed by a visit to RedFrog Pub featuring the line’s first-ever brewery. Carnival Vista then gives us a first look at the Family Harbour staterooms and suites, along with the Family Harbour Lounge where kids and parents can hang out, play games or help themselves to the cookie and snack bar. Then it’s on to another exceptional accommodations category — tropical-themed Havana staterooms and suites, which feature outdoor sitting areas complete with hammocks. Nearby is the Havana Bar and Pool, which our narrator describes as “a slice of Old Cuba magically transported to the middle of the ocean.” Carnival Vista is scheduled to enter service from Europe 01st May, 2016, then reposition to New York for a series of voyages in November 2016 followed by the launch of year-round Caribbean service from Miami later that month.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has made the strategic decision to base its 1,350-guest flagship, Balmoral, in Newcastle for the first time ever, from May to August 2016. Fred. Olsen has over 100 years of heritage in running passenger services from the Port of Tyne, and has been operating regular cruise calls from Newcastle since 2006. Since then, Fred. Olsen has seen bookings departing from the Port of Tyne soar, with its Norwegian Fjords cruises selling out in record time. Mike Rodwell, Managing Director of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said: “We are very excited to be basing Balmoral in Newcastle from May to August in 2016, as it means that we are almost doubling our capacity and offering our loyal guests in the North East an even greater number of cruise departures than ever before, with a choice of 11 in total. Bookings for 2016 have shown that, so far, our 14-night ‘The Wonders of Spitsbergen’ and 11-night ‘Icelandic Wildlife, Falls & Hot Springs’ cruises are bestsellers. “The Port of Tyne is also ideally placed for our ever-popular Norway, Scandinavian and Baltic itineraries, and we can save up to three days’ cruising time sailing from Newcastle to Norway than from Southern ports.” The appealing combination of choice and value offered by Fred. Olsen has already seen many first-time cruisers and repeat customers from the North East region make the decision to use their local port and sail from the Port of Tyne. Research shows that guests from the North East rate the choice of destination as the most compelling factor when booking a cruise with Fred. Olsen. As a result, in 2016, guests can choose from a wider selection of destinations sailing directly from the Port of Tyne, including the cooler climes of Norway, Scandinavia and the Baltics, to the warmer shores of the Canary Islands, Madeira, the Azores, Portugal, Morocco and Spain. In 2016/17, Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral will be setting sail from Newcastle for the first time ever, with a record 11 departures, representing a 45% increase in capacity from the Port of Tyne. Balmoral’s cruise season from Newcastle will commence on 21st May 2016, with a five-night ‘Norwegian Festival & Fjords’ cruise. Other departures include a ten-night ‘UK Castles’ sailing, which offers guests the chance to visit Balmoral and Braemar Castles

- both of which lend their names to Fred. Olsen ships - and an 11-night ‘Spain, Portugal & Guernsey’ getaway. Andrew Moffat, Chief Executive Officer, Port of Tyne, said: “The Port of Tyne’s cruise operations continue to grow and it is great news that Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines are expanding their itineraries and basing their flagship at the Port from next year. “Fred. Olsen is one of many leading cruise lines operating from the Port of Tyne and, in 2015, the Port has 27 cruise calls planned during the year. 2016 promises to be a record year for cruise calls.” Fred. Olsen’s 880-guest Boudicca is today [7th May 2015] heralding the first of its calls into the Port of Tyne for 2015, on an 11-night ‘Floral Britannia’ itinerary. This floral-themed sailing, which departed from Dover on 28th April 2015, will take in some of the best and most spectacular gardens and attractions in the UK, including the world-famous Alnwick Castle in Northumberland - where ‘Harry Potter’ was filmed - and its intriguing ‘Poison Garden’. Boudicca will return to the Port of Tyne to begin her cruise season on 26th July 2015, setting sail on a total of eight cruises, including a 16-night ‘Canaries, Madeira & the Azores’ sunshine escape, a nine-night ‘Norwegian Fjords’ cruise and a 13-night ‘Scandinavia & St. Petersburg’ departure. Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines operates four smaller, more intimate ships - Balmoral, Braemar, Boudicca and Black Watch - and offers cruises to over 200 destinations around the world, from ten convenient, regional UK ports, including the Port of Tyne. The Port of Tyne’s International Passenger Terminal (based in North Shields, eight miles from Newcastle City Centre) welcomes around 620,000 passengers each year. Passenger shipping generates around £60 million for the North East economy each year, supporting over 2,000 tourism-related jobs. For further information on Fred. MSC Cruises introduces ‘options’ for travel agents MSC Cruises is giving travel agents even more flexibility in selling its product by introducing ‘options’ across all itineraries. From May 18, trade partners will be able to secure cabins and flights on option for customers without the need to take a deposit and without commitment. Quotes will remain open for up to three days, depending on availability and departure date. MSC Cruises executive director UK and Ireland Giles Hawke said: “Opening up options is a new way of selling for us in the UK and Ireland – and one we believe will prove a real benefit for agents and their customers. “By offering this facility, agents can strengthen their role as a trusted advisor and underline the value they bring to the sales process. Clients can secure the ship and cabin they want at a guaranteed price then go away to discuss it with family before making their final commitment. “Having the booking on option means clients won’t see their preferred cabin sold or any price increases while they are making up their mind, which avoids any negative feedback for agents and gives them an extra weapon to secure bookings. “It should also cut down on cancellations and allows agents to ensure customers have all information to hand when they do confirm their booking. We will be the only mainstream cruise line offering this service to agents in the UK. MSC Cruises already offers options in a number of overseas markets and we have seen what a strong selling tool it can be.” Agents will be able to create options via MSC Cruises’ trade booking portals – MSCBook in the UK and MSC Online in Ireland – or via the contact centre. Customers will receive an email explaining how long the quote is valid for. On sailings up to 30 days from departure the option is valid until the end of the day it is taken; for sailings up to 60 days out the option is valid for one additional day; for sailings more than 60 days out it is valid for two additional days. After this time the option will automatically expire and be deleted from the booking system. The move is the latest in a series of trade-focused initiatives introduced to make life easier and more profitable for agents. In recent months MSC Cruises has rolled out revamped agent training, launched the upgraded MSCBook selling portal in the UK and rolled out a new call centre telephone system to reduce waiting times.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ Boudicca to commence cruise season from Rosyth in Summer 2015 Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ 880-guest ship Boudicca is due to commence her cruise season from Rosyth on 1st June 2015, with a seven-night ‘Norwegian Fjords’ sailing. In all, Fred. Olsen is offering six cruises from Rosyth aboard Boudicca in 2015 – an increase of two turnaround calls since 2014. In addition, Fred. Olsen will be setting sail on seven unique cruises from Rosyth in 2016, including a new ‘Five Night Norwegian Fjords’ sailing. Fred. Olsen will be offering guests in Scotland’s North East a variety of itineraries in 2015, including a seven-night ‘Scottish Highlands & Islands’ adventure, a 12-night ‘Norway and Arctic’ sailing, which includes stunning scenic cruising and a crossing of the Arctic Circle, as well as a 13-night ‘Scandinavia & St. Petersburg’ cruise. Nathan Philpot, Sales and Marketing Director at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said: “Boudicca’s forthcoming cruise season from Rosyth builds upon Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ already-close relationship with this convenient, regional port. Our ship Black Watch enjoyed a successful cruise season from here last year, which is why we have increased our cruise calls from four to six for 2015.

“This increase in turnaround calls from Rosyth showcases our commitment to the Port and enables us to offer our loyal guests in Scotland more variety in duration and destination when they are choosing their next ex-Rosyth Fred. Olsen cruise.”

It’s the busiest month of the year for cruise ship visits at Portsmouth International Port, and looks set to be the merriest too. On May Day – 1st May, two ships arrived at the Port. Both were finishing one cruise and starting another. Passengers checking in for cruises on ‘Voyager’ and ‘Ocean Nova’ had an extra special send off - 30 Morris Dancers from Wickham performed inside the spacious terminal building as people arrived for the start of their holiday. The traditional dancers, the Wickham Morris Side and the New Forest Medlars, set the scene for a May Day departure from the Waterfront City. The Hampshire Morris Dancers even accompanied passengers leaving on ‘Voyager’ down to the quayside, the perfect send off for a Voyages of Discovery ‘British Isles Heritage Cruise’. Looking wonderful after her routine dry dock in Bremerhaven, the ship has just returned to Portsmouth, resplendent for the start of the summer season. ‘Ocean Nova’ is operated by Quark Expeditions, built to withstand tough polar conditions. With just 38 luxury cabins it is typical of the smaller expedition ships that take passengers from Portsmouth to places that bigger cruise liners just can’t go. During May there will be 13 cruise ship calls and visits at Portsmouth International Port, all timed to fit in with the busy ferry and cargo ship schedule at Britain’s best connected Port. Cruise passengers have dedicated facilities at the Port, with many taking the opportunity to visit the historical sights and shopping delights in Portsmouth. As holidaymakers explore the city, and come and go to exciting destinations, a team of workers will be putting the finishing touches to the latest tourist destination in Portsmouth. The Ben Ainslie Racing HQ building is due for completion by the end of May/early June, with its visitor centre set to be a must see attraction. The BAR team will be preparing for the America’s Cup World Series event in Portsmouth this summer, which is due to attract tens of thousands of people to the City.

On Thursday 7 May 2015, 100 years on, Cunard’s Queen Victoria will pay tribute to the tragedy with her seven-night (3 - 10 May 2015) ‘Lusitania Remembered’ cruise. Sailing from and back to Southampton, the voyage will call at St Peter Port (Guernsey), Le Havre, Cobh and Dublin. Cunard has commissioned historian Eric Sauder to produce a temporary exhibition of Lusitania memorabilia that will be displayed on board Queen Victoria. The exhibit will feature chine, silver, brochures, postcards, memorabilia and souvenirs that will bring to life the story of Cunard’s former flagship. He has dived on the wreck of Lusitania and has authored two books on the subject. The exhibition will tell Lusitania’s story and feature several unique items including the scissors used by Lady Inverclyde to launch Lusitania in 1906. Angus Struthers, Cunard Director: “In this, our 175th anniversary year, we will take time to remember and reflect on the loss of the Cunard flagship Lusitania and we hope this special cruise will ensure that the tragedy will continue to be remembered for generations to come. It is especially important for us to be in Cobh on 7 May as we stand united with the port that will forever be associated with the tragedy. The sinking of Lusitania was a human catastrophe on a scale that this small town had not experienced before or since. People there witnessed first-hand, the trauma, tragedy and heartbreak that ensued. The dead, the injured and the bereaved were brought among a community that mobilised itself and responded with courage and compassion to their needs. “On 7 May 2015, we will remember them”

Cunard’s Three Queens Perform River Dance On The Mersey In Salute To Liverpool Where The Company Began 175 Years Ago Red Arrows add finishing touch to extraordinary spectacle For the first time, Cunard’s fleet gathered together in spectacular fashion in Liverpool, its spiritual home, as the company marked its 175th anniversary. The event culminated with the three ships, the largest passenger ships ever to muster together on the River Mersey, lined up across the river just 130 metres apart as the Red Arrows performed a fly-past overhead to the delight of the hundreds of thousands of spectators. Flagship Queen Mary 2 sailed from the Liverpool berth up to the mouth of the Mersey at 10.45am this morning (25 May) to meet her sisters, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria. The three ships then sailed in close single file down the river to Liverpool’s Pier Head with its iconic Three Graces: The Royal Liver Building, The Cunard Building and The Port of Liverpool Building. Queen Mary 2 slowed in the river opposite the Cunard Building – Cunard’s headquarters for nearly 50 years until 1967 – with her sister ships stopping ahead of her to create a three ship line-up watched by spectators of both sides of the river. Just 400 metres apart, the three ships then performed a graceful 180 degree synchronised turn to starboard. At the mid-point of the turn, all three ships lay across the river, creating the spectacle of the fleet’s three bows dramatically set against the backdrop of Liverpool’s famous Three Graces. Queen Mary 2 then sounded ‘175’ on her ship’s whistle (foghorn) – first one, then seven short blasts, then five more. With the full turn completed and the 150,000 ton Queen Mary 2 now in the leading position, her two 90,000 ton sister ships then glided slowly towards either side of her to create an arrowhead formation, with the flagship just ahead of her two consort ships. Finally, the entire fleet lined up three abreast across the river just 130 metres apart, as a salute to the Cunard Building and the City of Liverpool. With the Three Queens in this tight formation, the Red Arrows flew in formation low over the Three Queens as they lined up on the river, a coup de grace which created a once-in-a-lifetime moment that thrilled the hundreds of thousands of spectators. Commodore of the Cunard fleet Christopher Rynd said: “It’s been a privilege to bring the Cunard fleet together on the Mersey for the first time ever to mark Cunard’s 175th anniversary year and our historic and ongoing partnership with Liverpool, our spiritual home. After months of planning, today the three ships have manoeuvred on the River Mersey as never before, right in front of the Cunard Building, one of Liverpool’s Three Graces and a world heritage site as well as Cunard’s former headquarters. The Red Arrows flypast at the climax of the ships manoeuvres added a finishing touch to an extraordinary day. There can be no more fitting way to celebrate Cunard’s 175th anniversary. The spectators have been amazing and the numbers extraordinary – all the way from the mouth of the Mersey to Pier Head, we have seen such enthusiastic crowds. There has always been a special bond between Cunard and Liverpool and the north-west, with so many people having worked for or with Cunard over the years. There’s an emotional connection between us. Cunard is more than just a shipping line – it’s a source of pride that means so much to us and everyone associated with it. It’s a real pleasure to be able to celebrate that enduring bond between us all in such a special way today.” Cunard Director Angus Struthers said: “All of us at Cunard have been touched by the fantastic reception the Three Queens have received from the people of Liverpool and beyond today. It feels like 175 years of stories, people and history linking Cunard to the city have really come alive. With the Red Arrows flypast adding an amazing extra ‘wow’, it’s been the sort of day we hope parents and grandparents will remember with their children and grandchildren in years to come. It’s taken a huge amount of planning and cooperation between Cunard’s ships, the Mersey pilots and Liverpool’s cruise operation to make this happen and today is testament to the great results that continue to come out of Cunard’s partnership with the city. ”

The month of May brings with it several cruise highlights: maiden calls, the 826th Hamburg Port anniversary with six cruise ships, and nearly 40 calls with more than 100,000 passengers. It all started on 1 May with the MSC Splendida from MSC Cruises. At 333 metres long, 37 metres wide and with 1,637 cabins for up to 4,300 guests, it is the largest passenger ship that will set sail from the Hanseatic city this summer. On 1 May, at the maiden call in Hamburg, MSC Splendida expected a gala reception with the traditional handing over of the plaque between captain and port captain. At the ceremony, Hamburg’s Senator for Economics, Frank Horch and MSC-executive chairman Pierfrancesco Vago were also on board, to exchange the symbolic gifts. At the HafenCity Cruise Centre, in addition to the on board official ceremony, there was a festival for the whole family, for visitors and boat enthusiasts alike. On offer was a colourful stage show with live music, exciting acts and entertainment for both young and old. On the following weekend from 8 to 10 May 2015, the festivities were focused on the 826th Port anniversary. For the port anniversary, six cruise ships made their appearance (‘AIDAbella’, ‘AIDAsol’, ‘Amadea’, ‘Artania’, ‘Europe 2’, and ‘Queen Elizabeth’). The ‘Amadea’ and ‘Europe 2’ made multiple visits to the port during this time. The highlight was Saturday night, when the traditional AIDA fireworks lit up the night sky over Hamburg. Despite the stormy weather, hundreds of thousands of onlookers flocked to the jetties to take part in the 826th Hamburg Harbour anniversary celebrations. On the river Elbe, the AIDAbella cruise ship presented a laser show. This year, AIDA Cruises is also the main sponsor of the biggest maritime folk festival. Further first maiden calls in this packed month were ‘Ocean Diamond’ on 12 May, Poseidon Expeditions’ ‘Sea Spirit’ on 16 May, followed by TUI Cruises ‘Mein Schiff 4’ on 22 May. To ensure the success of the maiden calls, the Hamburg Cruise Centre (HCC) is on hand for cruise lines. A welcome with a sea shanty: not something you get on every cruise. But on 30 April, for the approximately 3,500 guests of the ‘Regal Princess’, the HHLA shanty choir belted out loud and clear - a gift from the HCC in honour of the first point of call of the Princess Cruises shipping company’s newest fleet member. To celebrate a ship’s launch in a fitting manner, the HCC offers cruise companies a whole range of services, such as support for PR activities, or even a welcome with a firefighter boat. And if you have something else in mind - no problem: The HCC sees itself as a creative partner for everything connected to the ship’s visit. ‘It is important to us, that a ship’s maiden call, or even a first visit by a cruise line to our Hanseatic city, is a special experience. After several years of working on acquisitions, receiving the ship in the port of Hamburg is the crowning glory and will be attended to by us with all means at our disposal,’ stated Nadine Palatz, HCC e.V management. In May, the HCC expected around 40 ports of call with an accompanying passenger volume of over 100,000.

The difference is CLIA at Portsmouth International Port, home to small cruise ship exploring Twenty five specialist travel agents were at Portsmouth International Port today (Tuesday May 12th); all experts in ever popular cruise holidays. They headed to the south coast on a fact finding mission, to discover more about why Portsmouth is an increasingly popular embarkation point for explorer cruises and small ships. The expert agents had been invited by CLIA, the Cruise Lines International Association, the organisation dedicated to promoting the benefits of a holiday at sea. They were holding their “Expedition and Small Ship Expo” in the passenger terminal, discussing latest industry developments and listening to representatives from leading cruise operators. Amongst those speaking at the Expo were representatives from Windstar, Hurtigruten, Silversea and Paul Gaugin. The delegates were all welcomed by Portsmouth International Port’s Harbour Master, Rupert Taylor, who is responsible for the growing cruise business. Rupert outlined the benefits for passengers and operators who include the waterfront city in their holiday itineraries. Rupert said: “You don’t have to be an intrepid explorer to discover why Portsmouth International Port has become a firm favourite with small luxury cruise ship operators. Our convenient location right on the motorway, close to railway stations and airports, with easy access to the English Channel and as a start off point to the British coastline has made us the perfect choice for explorer cruises. If ships are visiting us as part of a cruise, passengers can easily visit our world famous tourist attractions in the city and right on our doorstep.” As well as seeing facilities designed specifically for cruise passengers the agents also took a tour of the cruise ship Voyager during her turnaround call at Portsmouth International Port. This luxury cruise liner is operated by Voyages of Discovery and owned by parent company All Leisure Holidays. The ship was embarking her passengers for a week long ‘Flavour of France’ cruise. It was the perfect opportunity for the agents to have a look around, and enjoy a tour onboard whilst hearing why Portsmouth is an important part of the itinerary. Portsmouth International Port will see over 35 cruise ship calls and visits in 2015, a massive increase from when the Port started inviting cruise liners in 2001. The Port has become known for its flexible approach and highly tailored packages. This means it can offer full turnaround facilities for ships wishing to embark and disembark passengers, as well as those who are just calling for a day visit. The Port is an important economic engine for the local area, with each cruise call or visit generating employment and income for local businesses.

Scenic Celebrates Official Transformation To New Brand

Leading luxury travel company Scenic has officially rebranded and is celebrating a complete new look and feel. Scenic has been rolling out its new look across all platforms including print advertising, website, social media, and the first brochure in the new design which will launch on 18th May for the 2016 Europe River cruising program. The rebrand represents one of the most significant milestones in Scenic’s history and sees a new creative direction for the travel company, which has seen rapid global expansion in the recent years. Nichola Absalom, Brand Manager, commented: “The purpose of this project was very much to revitalise the brand on a global level and to continue to drive business growth. We want to be more than a travel company; we want to become a global luxury lifestyle brand. To do this we need to go beyond what people want to buy from us and explore what people want to do through us and, of course, people want to see lots of amazing things, they want to see wonder.” The evolution of the brand has stemmed from this concept of wonder and the mantra, which underpins the brand; never lose your sense of wonder. The brand story tells of a company that helps their guests experience and discover wonder throughout the world, starting 29 years ago when founder Glen Moroney travelled the Great Ocean Road for the very first time. Glen wanted to share that wonder moment and experience with others and so Scenic was born. Nichola added: “Everyone at Scenic is a curator of wonder and each staff member has a role in creating wondrous moments for our guests. Our cruises and tours don’t just happen by magic, there’s an art in what we do. We are very much a handcrafted business, from how our chefs prepare a dish to the intricacies of the designing of our journeys. Our journey designers who go to the nth degree to create wonderful experiences for our guests, and who are so much more than product managers.” Commenting on what is next for Scenic, Nichola said: “Next year is going to be big as we further develop our global product offering. We have five new ships launching in three new destinations, which is our most diverse year yet in terms of new destinations.”

Lisa Jacobs, CMV’s Head of Trade Sales said “It is one of the most popular dreams to sail around the World so to sell one has to be the dream of many of our trade partners. The CLIA Sales Conference was the ideal platform to show what we had to offer. As you can tell in the photo, our team needed little encouragement to get in the mood with a Round the World Cruise theme. Judging by the response and bookings in just a few days it tells us that we have got the itinerary, duration and price right.”

Seeing double at Portsmouth International Port The busiest month for cruise ship visits at Portsmouth International Port continued with two luxury liners arriving at the same time on Sunday 24th May. A year to the day since she last sailed into Portsmouth Harbour, Island Sky docked with her passengers at seven in the morning. Alongside was Louis Aura, another return visitor, cruising into the Waterfront City with her 600 passengers on-board. Island Sky is known as one of the finest small ships in the world. Her passengers disembarked after sailing from Guernsey, and a new cruise departed the same evening to the Isles of Scilly. With large open decks, luxurious public areas and a fleet of Zodiac inflatable craft for exploring coasts and small ports, there’s no chance of cabin fever for passengers. Operator Noble Caledonia says, “We promise there will be no organised entertainment, fancy dress, deck games or any of the usual big ship experiences. The atmosphere on board is more akin to a private yacht or country hotel. A little music in the lounge or bar after dinner, guest speakers, informative port briefings from our cruise director and of course good food.” Louis Aura last visited Portsmouth International Port on 30th June 2014. The classic liner is operated by Greek company Celestyal Cruises, formerly Louis Cruises. Her passengers had sailed from Greenock in Scotland, and spent a day exploring the historical sites of Portsmouth and the surrounding area. The elegant ship offers an open-air poolside nightclub, Greek celebrity chefs, a casino and even mini golf on its decks. USA Today describes the Louis Aura as “an icon of the early years of modern cruising”, a sentiment that passengers sunning themselves on its wooden decks are sure to agree with. Rupert Taylor, Harbour Master at Portsmouth International Port, said, “It was great to welcome back two old friends at Britain’s Best Connected Port on Sunday, arriving one after the other. Both operators tell us they’ve returned because of the high levels of service that they have received in the past. The fact we can offer dedicated facilities to both ships and passengers as they sail in together, whilst maintaining our high standards, goes a long way towards proving their point.” Thirteen cruise ships arrived, departed and visited Portsmouth International Port in May, making it the busiest month of the year. The summer season continues to go with a swing, including the arrival of Europa 2 on 2nd June. She is rated 5-star plus by Berlitz Cruise Guide 2015.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Southampton! One of the striking features of the Selling Cruise Conference this year was how much time, effort and enthusiasm cruise lines, sponsors and delegates put into making the event a huge success. Hosting, entertaining and engaging almost 600 delegates takes a great deal of thought and enthusiasm and all cruise lines and sponsors exceeded all expectations. The cruise industry is never more impressive and effective than when it stands together for the good of the whole industry, and the CLIA Selling Cruise Conference is a really great example of the importance of collaboration – of everyone working together to get more people to cruise. The whole CLIA team was truly humbled by the sense of cruise community that was evident at the Conference this year. The cruise industry demonstrates how everyone can play their individual part in the success of the whole industry – and at CLIA we really appreciate every contribution made. Let us keep that sense of sharing and community going by using Twitter to share our images of cruise and destination experiences using #MyCLIA so we can demonstrate the tremendous experiences available on a cruise holiday. Thank you to everyone who joined us, who sponsored and took an active part at the CLIA Selling Cruise Conference. We look forward to seeing you next year at our 10th anniversary! Andy Harmer, Director

Venue announced for Seatrade Cruise Med 2016 It was announced at a press conference today in Santa Cruz that Tenerife will be the 2016 venue for the largest cruise industry event focusing on the Mediterranean and its adjoining seas – Seatrade Cruise Med (previously known as the Seatrade Med Cruise Convention). As well as bringing together key industry leaders from across the world, it will also showcase Tenerife’s ideal location, facilities and everything this fantastic island has to offer.
