As well as a CLIA UK & Ireland training session, speed networking session and ship visit, delegates gained valuable knowledge on the wide range of Expedition cruise holidays that depart from the famous south coast Port, and saw the impressive range of facilities for themselves. The CLIA Expo was timed so agents had the opportunity to get onboard the Silver Explorer, a luxury Expedition ship that has been purpose built to operate in some of the world’s most remote destinations, including both of earth’s Polar Regions. Later that day the ship set off on a cruise that will take in the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly, Ireland and Scotland. The agents also heard from Conrad Combrink, Director of Silversea Cruises, and had an informative presentation from Victoria Creyton of the Galapagos Conservation Trust. Both talked about exploration and discovery cruises, the type of holidays that have become increasingly popular from Portsmouth International Port. The specialist travel advisors also got the chance to meet with representatives of other cruise lines and destinations, in a trade event that showcased the wide range of cruises that are available to holiday makers who choose Portsmouth as their departure point. Known as “Britain’s Best Connected Port”, it’s position on the motorway network with easy access from all over the country has made it a convenient choice for a growing number of cruise customers. This year there is a 34% increase in cruise ship activity at the Port.

Selling Cruise Conference Headline sponsor and preferred technology supplier to CLIA, Traveltek, is creating up to 40 new jobs ‘to fuel its rapidly expanding global reach’. Peter Whittle, previously Traveltek’s sales and marketing director, has been promoted to director, global sales. The new posts will be made up from strengthening Whittle’s sales and account management team, with an increased number of project management professionals joining the business. There will also be ‘significant’ additions to Traveltek’s content team and ‘language academy’, which provides Traveltek’s team of translators. CroisiEurope Update From the desk of CroisiEurope In 2013, French river cruise company, CroisiEurope, will this year have one-third of its fleet operating in France on the Gironde, Dordogne and Garonne rivers, through the Rhone, Saone and Seine valleys, on the Alsace canals and in Burgundy.
Also new to the CroisiEurope fleet is a 12-cabin crewed hotel barge, the MS “La Jeanine”, which will operate on the Alsace canals and in Burgundy offering bespoke experiences with English speaking commentaries between May and October. MS “La Jeanine” is a fully air-conditioned vessel with outward facing cabins that have windows or portholes plus private bathrooms. There is also a spacious lounge and dining room along with a fleet of bicyles for the use of the guests who are looked after by a team of five highly-qualified and experienced crew. The barge will operate in Burgundy, in Alsace, from Strasbourg to Xouaxange and from Dijon, sailing a magnificent journey through the Saône-et-Loire and La Côte d’Or regions of France. In 2014, CroisiEurope will introduce an all-inclusive drinks policy across its fleet with complimentary beer and wine at lunch and dinner as well as an open bar throughout each voyage. The all-inclusive programme will be offered on all European river cruises between April and October.

For the first time in two decades, we have expanded our sailing schedule by adding the Hjørundfjord, one of the most stunning fjords in Norway. Located in the Sunnmorsalp mountains, all ships will sail into the new fjord between 1 September and 31 October 2013 as part of their daily journey up and down the coast of Norway. Product Update 2013/14 In September 2013 we introduce our new vessel – the intimate, 100-guest expedition ship, Silver Galapagos. She will operate two alternating 7-day itineraries year round in the region. In keeping with Silver Explorer, she will be the finest ship in the Galapagos but also offering authentic, high quality expedition programmes with onboard expedition team of certified naturalists trained by the Galapagos National Park Service. We also offer pre and post cruise land programmes to make the most a visit to the region including trips to Machu Pichu, the Peruvian Amazon and Lake Titicaca. Combining a promotional campaign on TV, radio and in print we will be highlighting the benefits of cruising to UK & Ireland media that week. So to benefit from National Cruise Week 2013 we are encouraging all CLIA members to hold an afternoon tea event so that agents can spend time with customers and explain what the cruise experience will mean to them. Why afternoon tea? Well there are of course great links back to cruising of afternoon tea – it is a great British tradition that has found its way onto cruise ships across the industry and across the world. But afternoon tea will also allow our travel agent members to hold an event that is relatively easy to organise, at low cost, and at a size and extravagance to suit the organiser.
