Doctor of Social Sciences Nafisa Yeasmin received the Academic of the Year award granted by the Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers (FUURT). Yeasmin is an expert of Arctic immigration and was recognized with the award as an “active academic and a social activist whose research has a high and direct impact on the society�. This time, it focused on Arctic youth and climate change – topics that could not be more topical. During the Finnish Arctic Council chairmanship, we were involved in multiple ways. In spring, we organized the Circumpolar Agriculture Conference. Our aim is also to help the society and decision makers with Arctic knowledge. In 2019, the EU Arctic Policy Assessment project report provided – based on stakeholder interaction – recommendations with regard to the European Union’s current and future Arctic policy. For the upcoming Finnish Arctic strategy, we made a well-received survey of Arctic financing in Finland. Overall, we have established good contacts with the current Arctic decision makers in Finland. However, our most important contact may have again been someone whose name we do not even know: one of the over 3400 school children visiting our workshops and exhibitions. If we have created some love to the Arctic in even one of those children, we have succeeded.

School co-operation ▪ Around 3 404 children took part in learning paths, workshops and other activities in Arktikum. The biggest event was Science Week in September with 2 392 pupils. The event was organized together with LUMA Centre Lapland. ▪ In 2019, around 265 teacher students participated in the activities as part of their university studies.

The book of Northern Political Economy Research Group “Resources, Social and Cultural Sustainabilities in the Arctic” was launched in the Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit Conference on 13 November 2019. The book focuses on social and cultural dimensions of sustainability in the Arctic and presents case studies in Finland, Russia and Greenland.
