ARCTIC CENTRE ANNUAL REPORT 2017
In May 2017, Finland started as the chair of the Arctic Council. In December, Finland celebrated its 100 years of independence and Arktikum its 25 years jubilee. At the Arctic Centre, we lived genuinely through all these milestones and we were making things happen. It was quite a year. Here is a sample of what happened: Writing reports and analyzes to the use of the chairmanship. Organizing a local Arctic Council Host Committee in Lapland. Making ArcticFinland the national Arctic portal of Finland. Building the Finnish Arctic Expo exhibition. Having the Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit Conference as the main Arctic event in Finland during the first year of the Arctic Council chairmanship and as a part of the Finland 100 program. Besides all this, it was business as usual. Or – not quite so. Lapland is in the middle of an Arctic tourist boom and in our Arktikum House, we are struggling to find lunch seating in the restaurant. Over 100 000 visitors walked through the doors this year making it the record number since the opening years a quarter century ago.
One can easily say that at the Arctic Centre we are doing a work that has a meaning. Interest towards the Arctic has been steadily raising for many years already and we are trying to do our best when it comes to Arctic research, outreach and societal impact. Our research topics and other activities ranged this year from cyber security to protecting the endangered Northern Finncattle, from Polar Law Symposium to Arctic dating and mating exhibition and from old Arctic maps sent to Korea to discussing the European Union’s integrated policy for the Arctic. The main topic of the Arctic Spirit Conference was to combine the UN Sustainable Development Goals with the Arctic. This fits well to the overall aim of the Arctic Centre. Enhancing sustainable development in the Arctic is the most common denominator to our work: in its entire multitude it helps to create a holistic understanding of what is going on up here in the North. I want to thank our excellent staff for making all this happen together with our partners locally, nationally and internationally. Looking forward to new achievements and adventures in 2018.
