Master’s Degree Programme in

ARCTIC ART AND DESIGN

LAPIN YLIOPISTO UNIVERSITY OF LAPLAND For the North − For the World

We aim to support you in your professional development as an independent, creative and critical thinker. Our programme offers a unique combination of theoretical and practical studies. The content is designed to harness the potential of service design and applied visual arts in social, community or business contexts. Our internationally recognized academic staff will be there to support you throughout your studies.

ULAPLAND HAS ALWAYS GIVEN ME OPPORTUNITIES TO DEVELOP MYSELF FREELY.

I HAD MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN AND GROW PROFESSIONALLY AS WELL AS DEVELOP PERSONALLY. Artists and designers who complete the programme may find employment in regional or international development activities or in capacity-building for innovation and growth. Our graduates may, for example, work as entrepreneurs, consultants, designers or artists in challenging or extreme development contexts. Graduates may even focus on dealing with complex social or environmental issues.

Our unique Arctic art and design programme focuses on the intersection of art and design using the essential qualities of both disciplines. The degree is characterised by a human-centred approach employing the principles of both co-design and socially-engaged art practice. Your studies will be context driven, addressing issues related to the Arctic and the circumpolar north, thus creating a challenging environment for the student to foster ability for creative and innovative solutions. The programme’s overarching idea is to develop students’ professional identity by building a professional portfolio throughout the studies as well as a sense for entrepreneurship by learning to identify possibilities from small-scale creative entrepreneurial solutions to service design-based company consultations.
