An-Other Way. Disaster Resilient Housing in Bairro dos Pescadores MSc. Architecture and Urban Design Thesis 2020-2021 / Maputo, Mozambique
Supervisor:
Moreover, any further sea-level rise would flood the lowlying areas, with serious consequences for the informal settlement inhabitants whose capacity to adapt to climate change is rather limited. The key focus of climate change assessment and impact studies up to this date, has been at the national level, resulting in insufficient adaptation plans and measures at the local level. However, due to exposure and proximity, the local people in disaster-prone areas are the most vulnerable and bear most of the responsibilities in dealing with the consequences of disasters.
Although many of the impacts resulting from climate change, are already significantly affecting infrastructure, ecosystems, people and socio-economic values in various coastal and interior areas of Maputo, Bairro dos Pescadores has been selected as a case study to demonstrate the design development of the study. Thus, aim of this study is to address the impacts of climate change in household level, by identifying the challenges, studying the current housing practices, and as a result, developing a disaster resilient self-built housing proposal which is not contradicting with the local household lifestyles, while preserving traditional housing elements and techniques.
PORTFOLIO
Maputo, as it faces the Indian Ocean and being the most densely populated urban area in Mozambique, is highly vulnerable to the impact of climate change, such as droughts, flooding, tropical cyclones, high temperature periods and rising sea levels (UN-Habitat, 2012).

Dimensions of the selected plots
Selected plots are located in the narrow ridge of the primary dune on north end of the neighbourhood, and from the satellite images it is seen that they were demarcated with hedges in late 2019. This indicates that these plots are already a subject of future development, therefore they are convenient for implementing the design proposal of the study.
SELECTED WORKS
In peri-urban Maputo, officially planned and reordered plots followed the official norms with minimum size of 10x16 m in reordered areas, and generally either 12,5x25m or 15x30m in the officially planned areas.

Different room arrangement examples.
A large portion of the house design was devoted to finding ways to make the house as flexible as possible, such as allowing changes in interior partitioning and shaded semi-outdoor areas that respond to household lifestyles while preserving traditional housing elements. In the proposed design, self-organized interior division allows for flexibility in the number and size of rooms that can accommodate various household structures.

Layout Typology D has been picked as a layout to be improved, as its the most common t ypology in the newly built houses according to H omeSpace study.
Foundation Generally, buildings in informal settlements of Maputo has no proper foundation or anchorage to hold the structure in place against natural disasters.
Roof Overhangs must be kept short to reduce wind pressure. In order to reduce wind uplifts, an opening in a zone of negative wind pressure would be helpful to alleviate wind pressures on the roof.
Natural Ventilation Considering climatic conditions of the Maputo city, movement of air is essential to improve climatic comfort of the living spaces.
Drainage Drainage is a common problem, especially in the flood prone areas, as its a frequent phenomenon with the health implications it carries along.
Veranda The veranda is not only a transition space between outside and inside, which can be used for practical purposes as cooking, storage, or a social and welcoming space.
Flexibility Almost all cases from the previous studies shows that a significant densification process has taken place evidenced in both subdivisions and extensions of existing buildings or addition of new houses as annexes.
Latrine Most of the study cases were using simple pit latrines, which consist of a hole on the ground that they close it with soil when its full and dig a new hole.
Rainwater Harvesting Considering the low access to clean water through municipal connections, it is worthy to implement rainwater harvesting systems to the design.

Binasco Castle Academic Work 2018-2019 / Milan, Italy
Supervisors:
Hence, the ability to recognize and analyze such a built heritage, the width of the preliminary information where a project stands, is more than ever the foundation of a contemporary design, if not a way to determine its consistency. This work considers the architectural heritage as both a past cultural testimony and a tangible asset for contemporary reuse. In this study, we have learned how any feature, small sign or irregularity of a historic building can be a source of gain to contemporary design, enabling the designer to appreciate, analyze and arrange them.
Every different aspect of the project also can increase a building’s complexity and its value. Respecting an existing building doesn’t mean preserving a still image of the past or, worse, encouraging a false reproduction. Instead, it is about maintaining its remains and incorporating what requires contemporary use. It is not about trying to impose but about incorporating the present as a continuum in a vision of history.
PORTFOLIO
The goal of the studio is to overlap architectural design more and more closely with the transformation project of the current built heritage in a contemporary scenario characterized by global climate change and over-quoted keywords such as sustainability, resilience, shrinking city and urban spreading.

Viminacium, an Architectural Continuum Academic Work 2019-2020 / Kostolac, Serbia
Supervisors:
It is situated near to the town of Kostolac, part of the City of Pozarevac in north eastern Serbia. This area is quite unique in that it shares a large land border with the Danube and there are also certain tributaries of water which come from the River and intersect the land, such as the Mlava. So far, the level of excavation remains at around 3%. Yet even with that a network of important archaeological sites have been uncovered. Including even a mammoth from the Pleistocene period.
The goal of the project is to evaluate the conservation status of the ruins; to analyze the impact of the current coverage on the preservation of the ruins itself, the relationship between the coverage as an architecture and the neighbouring areas. The encircle study is important because the research case reveals very different environments (urban and natural / industrial) characterized by different and powerful human behavior that affect the survival of the materials and their enhancement or valorisation.
PORTFOLIO
Viminacium is an important Roman archaeological site located in the eastern Serbia, on the south side of the Danube not far from the border with Romania. It represents one of the most important archaeological sites in Serbia and one of the most important “limes” of the Roman Empire – a “limit” fortification at the edge of the Roman territory, defined by the Danube.

SogeMi Wholesale Food Market Academic Work 2018-2019 / Milan, Italy
Supervisors:
The role of the Milan market, leader in the 80’s at European level, has marginalized as a result of the failure to modernise its facilities which date back to the 60s. Therfore the complex has to change radically to meet the demands of a market undergoing profound changes, in terms of sales volumes, differentiation of products and services, as well as quality levels. The Design Studio offers an architectural design experience which faces the proper project complexity. Throughout their common relation and interaction, the contextual, typological, operational, constructive, expressive and formal problems of the architectural
design process will be dealt with. The design is challenged to objectively consider ongoing changes in specific contexts, and to suggest appropriate solutions. The goal of the study is to establish the design of a building that addresses issues related to the urban and territorial scale of detail, taking into account formal, technical, material and functional issues in their mutual relations.

Building envelope technical dravings
Academic Work 2019-2020 / Milan, Italy
Supervisors:
Since from the first phases of studio activity particular attention is paid to functional, constructive and environmental choices in relation to energy design and plant engineering. The didactic formulation of the Studio aims to teach and to pursue the distinguishing features of a training focused on the culture of the architectural engineering, on vocational training aimed at both project and
building planning, and the necessary skills regarding both managing and processing of morphotypological, functional, structural, executive and appraising contents. In this framework, the technical development of the project, considered and used as a tool for understanding, exploration and action, is carried out according to the synergistic combination between theory and practice: this is done through explanation and exercise based on the analytical and operational apparatus aimed at coordinating, controlling and monitoring the building, the structures and the economic valuation procedures.
PORTFOLIO
The goals of this study are: on the one hand, to experiment with the complexity of the design process, from the design to the realisation, by acquiring knowledge about the relationships between technological, energetic, environmental and structural aspects; on the other hand, to illustrate the cognitive, methodological, organizational and procedural tools in the different stages of the construction process, both for new construction and for building renovation.
