Even though this magazine has been created for you, dear Delegates, this time we prefer to say: Dear Journalists, Being inspirational. Without saying it in words, you all aimed to be. And you all were. Thank you for smiling, for being positive and energetic and running around with your hand stuck to a camera. And though we did tour best to inspire you, we were the ones who were inspired by you, by the way you all worked together as a team, as the press family. Thank you for your hard work, your commitment to the many tasks, the challenges we gave you. You stayed up all night working on your articles, and you never complained but always gave us a hand and were ready for more. And dear Delegates, we hope these eight outstanding young individuals also managed to inspire you. See you soon in Europe! Ceren & Ulli Editors of Sitges 2012

We all have enjoyed four days of fun and work nearby the Mediterranean. But one question remains – what is underneath the visible? Here we have the answer: Numbers explain the effort put in the organisation and the session itself better than words.

our new society The lives of the 11 members of EMPL are all planned out with society-changing initiatives. by Hugo Hoyland Saturday, 28th April 2012. The sun is shining, the children are playing, and the elderly are moaning. You may ask where our energetic youth is. Well to answer simply, 11 of our finest specimens made a decision today – a decision which would change their lives: In 3 years’ time they shall meet up whatever their social situation is, to address the issue of youth unemployment. Tuesday, 28th April 2015. The sun is shining, the children are playing, and the elderly are moaning. Our energetic youth has grown older. Just like they predicted, their situation has changed. Be it the homeless Pablo Lopez, Carmen Alvarez the millionaire or Agnes Lozano the writer, each and every trusty friend has met up in Georgina’s and Julia’s employment agency. Mutual help, unofficial assistance and unwavering selflessness have brought them to where they are, to where they have always wanted to be. Pablo wanted to be able to live in the streets so he could sing about his travels as a great big moose who drank

a lot of juice. Our dear Marcel Baste and Laura Diaz rap and sing their souls out in their studio, expressing their views on the inequalities our world faces. Saving lives, be that by offering medical guidance or building safe structures, have become the daily lives of Carlos Jesus Mora (doctor), Marta Romeo and Cristina Crespo (both engineers). Carmen Chatman and Rafael de Azua, along with the help of Marcos Becerra, founded a business specialising in socially responsible tourism which employs the last, the lost and the forgotten of our society. Julia, who, by the way, was miraculously transformed into a monkey, is a vital help to Georgina. As all 11 gather around the old Chairs who built their group back in 2012, one cannot help but notice that the scope of social conditions regrouped on this warm day of April is of inestimable value. Each of these eleven geniuses aims to put their respective expertise to the profit of society, to create their “new society”.

synchronising the green machine! by David Teruel Cano Gathering ENVI together after some hours of work was the most effective way I could get to know them. To my surprise, there was a new member in the committee, which is always enriching. Alejandro’s presence allowed them to get to know each other in a deeper way, as they had to integrate him into the committee after Teambuilding had already been completed. Once they entered the Committee Room, it was time to set up and adapt it according to their needs. The best way to do so was to draw themselves, which was also useful to further create deep roots between them. But time was calling them to get to work. ENVI started work by discussing the topic question, which created the perfect mood to start their work. As if they were pieces of an engine, they were all trying to connect and orientate in the right way, ready to bring the engine to life. The committee fired the engine by discussing the main important facts of their topic. To my eyes, every member of the committee perceived where their place in the debates was – a necessary skill not every group possesses. During the afternoon, the level of debate exponentially rose. Compensating for the controversial arguments that were debated, we had the pleasure to spontaneously en-

joy Martí’s funny moments, which broke the ice in some tense moments. The Blip Blop game outside of the venue was really useful, as they could not only speak up and comment about how the session was going, but also enjoy playing. The committee discovered an expert in throwing water, Nuria. As soon as the committee was getting closer to solutions for their topic, the efficiency of the engine got upgraded. The engine was fully functional. At their peak production, all pieces were active, and obviously each and every one of them was essential for the smooth running of the machine. As soon as phrasing started to take place, we realised our fortune in having Tito in the team. His ability to create powerful sentences made the task easy, and helped the team to convert their feelings and hopes into ideas and action. Splitting the group in two groups, the committee put all their effort in writing the resolution. I could feel the excitement they were having as they drew closer to the end of phrasing and onto the tangible results. I am convinced that the engine is ready and prepared for General Assembly, and I am sure they will manage to run in a green, careful and natural way.

modern utopia or outdated dream?

Taryn Cornell and Hugo Hoyland discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the European Union in its current state.

‘Europe’ was created after World War II in an attempt to force European countries to share resources for reparations; since then, it has grown in ways that its creators never anticipated. Currently, however, some arguments have flared up all over member states regarding the efficiency and effectiveness of the EU. Without doubt, this is an issue you are familiar with as members of the EYP. But what exactly are the arguments for and against the current existence of the EU?

+

Gives weight to member states’ individual voices: Today, with the proliferation of world alliances uniting countries all over the world, a lone nation can find their voice overpowered on the global political arena. Acting as part of the 27-member-strong EU, however, provides far more gravitas to an argument. Promotes democracy: The European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) is just an example of how the EU aids in the worldwide promotion of democracy. This works on two fronts: offering favourable relations with the EU in return for neighbouring countries to reform along democratic lines; and creating certain criteria to be fulfilled before a country can join the Union. PostSoviet Eastern Europe is a perfect example of this: Despite the odds, nearly all of these states have reformed and have been welcomed into the EU. Safeguards peace: The reason why the original treaty focused on a community for coal and steel was the significance of these materials in warfare. If nations were forced to align behind these economic alliances, war would be prevented. The fact is that, unlike when the first post-war European alliances were formed, the idea of a European war is now unfathomable.

Limits opportunities to act in national interests: Due to the terms of the EU, countries are forced to think about other nations before acting, and not just govern themselves solely in the interests of their own country. This can have a detrimental effect upon a country’s sense of cultural sovereignty. The adoption of the Euro, for example, some believe has led to a loss of patriotism and customs of historical significance.

Seems to favour wealthier countries, as they take the lead on many issues: Throughout the media, it is unavoidable to notice Nicolas Sarkozy, Angela Merkel and David Cameron being the power tripod of the EU. Their respective countries carry the most weight in the European Parliament, which could help sway legislation in their favour. Can damage international trade: The EU is the largest single market in the world, and while this is excellent for the Member States involved, it can lead to problems on a wider scale. The European Union overproduces food, and consequently adopts a policy of “agricultural dumping”. This destroys struggling economies’ ability to compete within their internal markets, as the price of EU goods can often be significantly lower than Less Economically Developed Countries can afford to offer their consumers. It is clear from the current global climate that there are fundamental problems in the EU that need to be addressed urgently. That being said, the EU is still a work-in-progress, but as the largest economic, political and cultural association of countries the world has ever known, this is somewhat understandable. From our perspective as EYPers, we believe that the EU is a project worth investing the time and resources in maintaining and improving. Not only does it provide economic and military stability for Member States, but it also encourages worldwide tolerance, peace and the adoption of human rights. These, we believe, are – and should continue to be – the foundations of society. Besides, without the European Union, there would be no EYP!

on the road with JURI Having spent four days in Sitges together, the delegates of the Committee on Legal Affairs have become surprisingly close. They are friendly, caring and, most importantly, understanding. They have reached the stage when a trip around the world is exactly what they need to satisfy their insatiable love for traveling. The first thing on the agenda is getting a nice camper van and planning out the route. With some advice from their Chair Alex on how to focus and keep on the track, planning the trip should not be a problem, as JURI has friends and family all over the world. First stop should probably be Poland, where they could visit Zosia, their Chair and the President of Sitges 2012. After spending a few days exploring

Warsaw – and hopefully, a few places in Latvia as well –, their trip would continue via the Middle East and end up in China. With Sofia’s friendliness and Diego Chinese language skills, making new friends there would be extremely easy. Later, Indonesia must be on the list, as Patrick would most probably want to visit his family and introduce his new friends to them. With a few stops on the way, Toronto, and afterwards London, must be visited as well. Paula, who has lived in both cities for a while, can show the others around. A final stop in Sitges would bring back memories of the first time they met will put an end to this beautiful trip. Money will definitely not be an issue for these people, as they can easily earn it by

After fearlessly dealing with the monster ACTA, the Delegates of JURI are ready to travel around the world together. Gundega Elerte is excited to see how that works. performing on the streets of the cities they visit. Miguel, the rocker of the Committee, will bring some rock’n’roll spirit to the group, to get everyone in the mood. With some guitar music by Julia Malo and Roger, together with the beautiful voices of Julia Pares and Paula, there is no chance anyone could just pass by. Even more, when Violeta, encouraged by the others, finally gets the courage to show her amazing Sevillanas dancing skills, everyone would be amazed. In a case of trouble, these guys don’t have to worry. Firstly, Ignacio, a diplomat-tobe, will use his ability to negotiate, but if their opponent is not convinced, Diego’s fencing skill could definitely save the others. The only worry is that a hotel with a

TV would be needed every time there is a football game for Barcelona, as Roger – the great fan he is – will definitely not be able to miss a single one. Remembering JURI’s motto – there is no I in “team” – I am sure this trip will end in great success. Besides, it might be an effective way of introducing the world to their ideas for a new legislation concerning piracy on the Internet, worked out here in Sitges. The confidence they have in themselves will persuade even their strongest opponents. Therefore, I wish them good luck on the trip and will be waiting for the photos and stories of their adventures!

AFCO‘s trip over Europe by Carla Celda Get ready! AFCO have started their trip and trained very hard to climb to the top of the mountain. They are prepared and have everything in their bags: confidence, hard work, smiles, great ideas and enthusiasm. Even though their favourite word is “ignorant”, AFCO have been discussing and looking for solutions that the EU should adopt in regard to national minorities. They have been travelling to the “minorities’ past, to understand their present feelings” (Laura), taking pictures of “the discriminated cultures that enrich a country” (Marta), and, although not all of the travellers are going to be fluent in the “inofficial languages talked during their trip over all national minorities of Europe” (David), they succeeded to overcome the obstacles found along the way. And although one of the lovely travellers, Rocío, did not have enough voice for the committee shout, she has a lot of things to say. She is almost recovered, so just a piece of advice: Pay attention and do not underestimate her, she will rock the GA as she did during the Eu-

rovillage party, by showing off her excellent Sevillanas dancing skills. The guides of this extraordinary journey – Anni and Lorenzo – have been preparing them for if the worst comes to the worst. Cristina insists on visiting other national minorities, such as the French and Swiss, and she does not want to forget about anything. The guided visit to the ‘Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities’ (FCNM) monument has shown that it probably “requires some restoration, adapting it to European needs” ( Juan). However, Etxahun, Felix and Ignacio think that economic independence would be a good solution to satisfy the national minorities’ economy. In spite of that opinion, “the EU cannot force any country to do that, because, if not, we would be talking about a dictatorial system.” (Gerard) After this outstanding experience, I just hope they achieve their aims and climb to the top of the mountain to enjoy the views, discuss their memories from the journey and bring good memories back home.

AFCO is ready. Are you? HATING CHAIRS’ LIST Lorenzo hates: Chocolate, Pictures, Sun, Wind, Feeling cold, Cheese, Women that drive scooters, People that do not swim in the sea because it is cold, Espresso outside Italy

Anni hates: Christmas, Dark, Liquors outside Finland, Italians like Lorenzo (even one of her best friends is Italian), People who cannot pronounce names correctly

Anni & Lorenzo hate: Cats, Slow drivers, People who stop in the middle of the street, Trees without leaves, Winter and autumn

Contemplating about this year’s 25th anniversary of the EYP, David Teruel realises that he would have had to print out photos separately and stick them to the newspapers if he would have been a Journalist back in the onset of our organisation.

the femmily by Claudia Grimal The session is almost over and it is time to take a look back at these days to see how FEMM has grown as a team. Despite how polemic the topic was, this committee has developed a proper working atmosphere where everyone could express their own opinion. They had some problems during Committee Work since it is really difficult for everybody to agree on the same point and it had a great possibility to destroy the friendly atmosphere. Instead of this happening, FEMM became a big family. Guna, the only International Delegate of the session, strongly encouraged other Delegates to speak in English, which – let’s be honest – is rather unusual when talking about the Spanish. Simona’s passion and the always-smiley Lorena brought the sparkle to the committee. The debate just got exciting once Fernando and Isabel E. provided their points. In the meanwhile Laura tried keep being active in the debate and unfortunately Pablo was still trying to recover his tiredness from Europarty. Izaskun and Ayla lost their shyness as the session progressed, and Isabel W. tried to establish a harmony among the whole

committee. Last but not least, Albert “the Rockstar” and Ariadna “the redhead” apparently became very close friends. With the priceless help of their Chairs, the committee has suffered an evolution process that has its good and its bad moments. As Luis explained to me with a graph, they all started with plenty of energy during Teambuilding but unfortunately doubts appeared during Committee Work. Luis hopes the committee will feel totally satisfied with themselves during General Assembly. It does not matter if the resolution passes or not, they have already done an intense and productive job. What is even more important, they became a FEMMily and enjoyed the time they spent together.

mance in the Miramar Building is scheduled for this Sunday – thus the rehearsal is a race against the clock. In recognition of this, the orchestra does not lose steam. The rehearsal runs quite smoothly, once van Zetten has made clear that the symphony does not have to be played in one go. Instead, “AFET” tackles one part after another. During the rehearsal it is hard to stay focused for such an extended period of time, but for the sake of the team, each member gives it his or her best. By now, they know that a single, overpowering instrument sounds quite monotonous. Therefore

they begin to listen to each other, to truly interact. And there was suddenly music in the air. All at once they figure out aspects that they did not think of before. Finally, the individual instruments harmonise. I was truly amazed when I realised how fast “AFET” progressed. I would not be surprised if they continue discussing how to optimise their performance until late into the night. So, I recommend you all to go to the Miramar building this Sunday. You should definitely not miss the fabulous show of “The Committee on Foreign Affairs”.

how did we get here? Trying to catch them up and down the corridors, Claudia Grimal had a short chat with Laia Silva and Sílvia Susach, the two Head Organisers of Sitges 2012.

How was the idea of the session created?

So why Sitges?

Sílvia: It was a year ago when Laia and I had just organised the Regional Session in Zaragoza. We were on the bus back to Barcelona, and said to each other: “Hey, why don’t we organise another session?” Firstly, we were like: “We are crazy, we shouldn’t do that!” But, in the end, we agreed on the same bus ride to organise the next National Selection. From then on we started checking different cities to see which city would suit our session best. What we knew from the beginning that we wanted it nearby our homes, because wanted to have control over what we are doing.

Laia: We chose Sitges because it combined many advantages: With its train station, it is easily commutable; it is very beautiful especially with its beaches; and the city hall told us that they would help us with everything at any time. What makes this session so very special in your opinion?

Sílvia: I think it’s the location, because it is the first time that we have a session in such a charming place. Mostly they are held in big cities, but here the small distances make everything run smoothly instead and provides space for the participants to enjoy the session.

Which is the best and worst part of your role during the session?

Laia: Can you imagine that I have never thought about this? Definitely the best part of the session is that it is actually taking place, and that is because Sílvia and I started working a year ago, and here we are now, we actually made it happen! I think that the worst part would be the amount of stress… Can you give some tips to future Head Orgas?

Silvia: Do not be too hysterical, because I am very hysterical, and even if that does not necessarily mean that you are bad at organising, sometimes it is all about solv-

ing problems that are unpredictable. What you firstly have to do is not to freak out, which is something that I am still learning. That’s my main piece of advice. Take a look back: How do you value your path in EYP?

Silvia: Well, EYP – even if it may sound like a huge cliché – has changed my life. I’m still working and I still have a long way to go in my learning process, but although I’m a bit closer to the end of the path, I still have some more time to enjoy it. What do you think is the thing that makes EYPE different?

Laia: Our friendship. (Editor’s Note: EYPE is a huge and a lovely family!)

they’re SEDE and they know it “We are not transparent enough”, explains Carol, and she’s not alone in her opinion. “Transparency leads to confidence, and confidence leads to trust”, furthers Jaime, “and a mediator needs to be the person who inspires this confidence”. The rest of the nine-strong team nods enthusiastically. So what exactly does a diplomat need to do this? The committee came up with four main points. A sense of charisma, or “being able to connect with people and level with them” (Giancarlo) is the first step. “Having a person to transmit calmness makes everyone more receptive to a compromise”, Jaime explained, and it is a thought echoed by the committee as a whole. Indeed, when I asked this question, the first thing most answered with was related to calming the situation in order to regain control. Secondly, good communication skills are inevitably vital. This extends from “having a control of the language” (Ramon) in order to gain a sense of cultural awareness to ensuring “clarity in what you want” (Alovya). Thus avoid misunderstandings that can so exacerbate all already-tense situations. Thirdly: the ability to compromise. As

26

rosa dels vents

Carol elucidates, “this gives an end to the means; you are not just there to state your opinion”. This structure also has a tactical advantage, explains Laura, as “being empathetic for the other party’s concerns allows you to develop a better tactic to compromise”. Finally, Blanca takes on the role as resident psychologist for the team, as she describes how “if you know how the other party thinks, you can convince or contradict them more easily, as well as correcting yourself ”. Last, but by no means least, comes the very manner in which a diplomat should handle himself or herself. “Politeness is respect and that is the foundation of every relationship”, Fernando explains, rather poetically, as “being offensive can make matters even worse” (Pablo). Compromising – charismatically, clearly and politely – is thus SEDE’s recipe for diplomatic success. At the same time, however, it is important to stand true to what you know to be correct; “if someone is saying 1 + 1 = 3, you’re going to have to show them how they’re wrong”, declares Alovya. Sounds like, SEDE is ready to blow any opposition out of the water – diplomatically, of course.

The Committee on Security and Defence, mediator between Iran and the West, and Agony Aunt extraordinaire, shows Taryn Cornell how diplomacy is done.

TO MEDIATE OR NOT TO MEDIATE? Jaime: “Intervene; pull the sides apart and calm them down” Carol: “Have a mediator, but they must be unbiased and allow the sides to attempt resolution by themselves” Blanca: “A mediator is necessary not only to help calm the situation, but also to help find a solution if necessary” Fernando: “If needed, a mediator should take a back-seat role and be nothing more than a facilitator of the conversation”

Alovya: “Stand back and see how it develops. Only mediate after relations have totally broken down.” Laura: “Talk to one, then to the other, and actively mediate between them” Pablo: “You need a mediator to stop it turning into a fight” Ramon: “Try to mediate individually, but never give your own opinion” Giancarlo: “Tough love can be effective”

the day after tomorrow Date Sun, 29 Apr 2012 18:16:26 From lea.schiewer@sitges-journo.es To The Delegates Subject Lea Schiewer likes to stress: Sitges 2012 may be at an end, but EYP’s is nowhere near

Dear Delegates, Congratulations to those of you who got selected to attend, amongst others, the International Sessions in Amsterdam and Munich – you are going to rock these sessions! Though, this mail is addressed to each participant of Sitges. Even when you have not been invited to one of the upcoming events, your EYP adventure has just started. If you like what you have experienced here, why do not stay in EYP and keep attending sessions or continue as an Official? EYP Spain is always looking for motivated people to join in and help organising. So do not hesitate and have a look on their homepage. Write an e-mail to the national board or follow them on Facebook and Twitter to stay tuned for the upcoming events, like Forums and Officials’ trainings and at least the many events for the members of EYPE. Furthermore, you need to know there are even more sessions awaiting you beyond the Pyrenees. The EYP is actually a network of more than 35 National Committees who organise more than a hundred events every year all over Europe. Therefore, my dear Delegates, venga venga, apply as a Chair, a Journo or an Orga. Whether in Spain or abroad – EYP goes on! Hope to see you soon! Much love, Lea
