About the event

N

ow celebrating its twentieth year, the Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby consists of a parade of non-motorized kinetic sculptures capable of rolling down lower Broadway in Kingston. It is an event that brings professional artists, the creatively inclined and their families and friends together to show off their original soapbox creations. Early in the day participants park their creations along Broadway, making final preparations. Thousands of spectators gather to watch each car roll down the hill one by one. Vendors and live performances add to a day of fun that climaxes in an eccentric and entertaining awards ceremony in Gallo Park, where participants receive prizes and one-of-a-kind artist-designed trophies. Spectators have the opportunity to get last looks at their favorite soapbox cars, lined up post-parade on West Strand Street. The Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby is a family-friendly event that promotes the arts and draws participants and spectators from far and wide. The derby sponsors workshops for participants who need some extra help and encourages local community organizations to join in the fun and build a soapbox car as a team. The Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby supports the local economy by bringing new and returning faces to Kingston.

For nearly two decades, the derby has been a labor of love for its founder, Donskoj & Company. Each year, George Donskoj and Nancy Schneider Donskoj organized an army of art volunteers to deliver the festival on a tiny budget beyond the cost of prizes. The derby has a new home, Historic Kingston Waterfront (HKW), a state-chartered “museum without walls” that seeks to help Kingston’s arts and cultural heritage destinations build capacity. Spearheading this years organization are Felix and Sarah Olivieri, owners of Olivieri’s Arts, Crafts, & Coffee, located on the derby parade route at 63 Broadway (www.olivieriart.com). The Olivieris are joined by a fabulous group of volunteers committed to returning the event to its former glory. The goal is to of attract 10,000 spectators and 20 to 30 entries!

owntown Kingston’s only arts supply store, Olivieri’s Art, Crafts & Coffee helps make the Rondout a destination for artists and the creatively minded. This summer it’s hosting the Artists Soapbox Derby. The best advertisement for the derby is sitting on the sidewalk in front of the store: Felix Olivieri’s low-slung, Rat-Fink-inspired jalopy constructed of art supplies. With cardboard tubes and complicated facets, it resembles a surrealist hallucination. The prospect of it rolling down lower Broadway is awesome. niversary. From a back counter, Felix serves coffee, egg sandwiches, bagels, and other comestibles to nourish his customers and entice neighbors into the store. (The counter also functions as a therapy, political debate and gripe session; the nearby couch and Felix’s easygoing, friendly manner encourage people to share what’s on their minds.) It’s a serious art store, too. It stocks a comprehensive selection of art supplies, including R&F Handmade Paints’ oil sticks, high-quality Rublev oil paints, all manner of pencils, charcoal sticks, and marker, reasonably priced canvases and drawing pads, and other paint surfaces. There’s a children’s section and also a wellstocked section for the graffiti artist (an echo of Felix’ origin in the Bronx). Olivieri’s also boasts a 3-D Makerbot desktop printer, probably the only such device in downtown Kingston. Felix prints out tiny plastic busts of people based on a head scan he can do in the store with a 3D scanner attached to an iPad. He can also print out jewelry, nametags, characters and even a replacement parts for specialized repairs. The store offers printing services at special rates for artists and local businesses and is about to introduce a community bulk ordering discount;

Experience maritime history! Museum offers a glimpse of a rich heritage By Lana Chassman

T

his year the Hudson River Maritime Museum in Kingston is celebrating its 35th anniversary of preserving and interpreting the Hudson River’s rich maritime heritage to visitors from all over the world and to local residents as well. The museum has evolved into a cultural Riverport destination, including the Kingston Home Port and Education Center as well as the newly created Riverport Wooden Boat School. Located along Rondout Creek, the museum is “kid-friendly,” with exhibits for everyone. You can learn about how lighthouses warn boaters about dangers on the river; about boatbuilding, rowing and sailing, steamboats and day liners, ferries crossing the river, ice harvesting and ice yachting, Henry Hudson’s voyage of discovery on the “river that flows both ways,” about the workhorses of the river, tugboats, about brickmaking and fishing, and about how weather and climate affect the river and our

The mists of history Every event worth its salt has a founding myth, and Kingston’s soapbox derby has a whopper By Dave Lowrie

A couple of past entrants to the Derby. ist Soapbox Derby was born. With the blessing of a visionary mayor willing to take chances, an inaugural committee, a lot of legwork and the generosity of many, the derby quickly grew from a handful of entries and several hundred spectators to three dozen vehicles in a range of categories and thousands of race fans who made an appropriate day of the event -- enjoying not only the fanciful vehicles but the natural beauty of the neighborhood, where the Rondout Creek flows into the mighty Hudson River, and where there’s a concentration of the energy of dining, cultural, nautical and other attractions. The Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby is a family-friendly event that highlights the arts by drawing participants and spectators from far and wide. Beyond the day of the event, the derby sponsors workshops for entrants who need some extra help, and encourages local community organizations to join in the fun and build a soapbox car as a team. The event supports the local economy by bringing many new and returning faces to Kingston, giving businesses and organizations the opportunity to support the neighborhood while promoting their own brands in unique and memorable ways. Early in the day participants park their creations along lower Broadway and make final preparations.

ist Soapbox Derby eschews the term “race” – there’s still no need for speed. It affirms its identity as a moveable feast of ingenuity, or, as the founders envisioned it, “a parade of kinetic sculpture.” And what of our intrepid founders? Nancy and Yourij Donskoj, artists, impresarios and Rondout gallery owners, are happy to hand the wheel over to new friends and neighbors. By highlighting the Rondout neighborhood’s natural attractions, its cultural and historical gems, dining meccas and the overall flow of a bustling neighborhood, the derby brings it all together. For the official “racers,” curious spectators, boaters, residents, tourists, and everyone who enjoys fun, the Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby defines creative expression from a community that lives to celebrate its vibrant local efforts.

The spectators watch. One by one, the fanciful vehicles roll down the hill, one by one. Vendors and live performances add to a day of fun that concludes with a wacky and entertaining awards ceremony in Gallo Park, where participants receive prizes and unique artist-designed trophies. Post-parade, spectators and competitors have the opportunity for last looks at their favorite derby cars, lined up rally-style on the historic West Strand. This year the Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby turns 20 years old. There have been twists and turns. As the neighborhood goes from renewal to renaissance, with a steady flow of new residents and businesses, the derby approaches its platinum anniversary year with a re-boot of prize categories, sponsors, new fans and local supporters. The Kingston Art-

nce upon a time in upstate New York sat a magical village nestled between a rambling river and majestic mountains. For two centuries this little hamlet had welcomed people from all over the world, allowed them to cooperate for mutual benefit, and grew into a capital place to live, work and play. But one day without warning, the biggest factory in this now-prosperous little city, The Big Blue Bean Company, packed up and left in favor of finding more bean counters elsewhere. The little city suddenly felt the pinch, with citizens moving away and once-bustling businesses closing their doors. Several years later, a couple of bright and talented people with an eye for beauty and history rediscovered a riverside neighborhood that was nearly bursting with potential for a movement of renewal. It boasted empty storefronts with grand entrances, and life-size windows that yearned for light and color, and the feel of what might become a new artistic and social community. These forward-thinking folks took a plunge into their waterfront wonderland and over time began to lure in a current of other artists, restaurants, museums and cafes. The neighborhood, historically known as the Rondout, slowly but surely gained new life, attracting a subtle wave of like-minded adventurers, and once again the docks and sidewalks felt the pulse of friendly feet. But something, alas, was still missing. Our heroes looked around and asked how they could jump-start their new surroundings. With a festival, of course! An event to celebrate their vision, hard work and good fortune, to include and encourage those who had joined their journey. What did they have to work with? Creativity, a big hill, some hand tools … and gravity! Genius! This brainstorm led to the idea of a race. Not just a race, but a contest combining color, whimsy, a little bit of engineering, and lots of fun! It wasn’t to be a traditional contest – motorized entries were prohibited — but a collective competition where being first or fastest wasn’t top priority. So in 1995, over margaritas and blue corn tortillas, the Kingston Art-

Rules and Requirements

F

irst, some requirements related to safety & fairness: Entries must be able to steer and stop and capable of keeping the entry in place on an incline. At the starting line-up, all cars will be inspected for steering and stopping capabilities. Entries determined to have insufficient breaking will be required to go down the hill with a rope attached and a trailing person to keep the car from speeding away. While the entrants may feel the shame of the rope, judges will not hold this against them. After all, this is a competition of creativity! Entries must fit in the street: we suggest no longer or wider than 15ft. x 6ft. and no taller than a 10 ft. tall dragon. Children and the fragile headed should wear bike or riding helmets . . . just in case. Business logos and/or signage must be limited to 300 square inches. You may re-enter a past entry, but you will not be eligible to win. Now, here’s what do if you want to win a prize: Build an amazing work of art that can roll down a hill. We call this a kinetic sculpture. You can build it any style you want. The car that captures the heart and minds of the people, will win the Coveted Peoples Choice Award. Are you a kid? Are you a kid 13 years of age or younger? Get your friend and family to pitch in, or do it by yourself. Make that car of your dreams, maybe get the professional edge at one of our workshops (to be scheduled). One terrific car will win First Place in the Kids devision.

Do you prefer coming in last? Do you often find yourself the but of others’ jokes? Than go for the Rondout Reject (aka Horses Ass Award)! Not sure how to loose? Check out this proud group of asses from the past (gallery coming soon) Are you a good samaritan? Do you support the work of a non-profit or charity organization? Get your fellow do-gooders together and build a car that represents your good work. Blog your progress, Facebook your efforts, build it and they will come . . . then on derby day you will have a special place to line your car up at the top of the hill where you can share information and fundraise for your cause. The winning Charity Soapbox will win a donation to their organization. Up for a special challenge are you? This year we have added creative categories. Each year we will select three categories to get you motivated and honing your artist skills. The winner of each category will win a glorious prize. This year’s categories are:

Pop-Culture Best pop-culture inspired car.

Classic work of art Best car referencing a classic work of art.
