An ethos to reuse and recycle, with a keen eye for design, an artists flourish and all put together by master craftsmen – that’s what makes Refound something special.
Antique – Vintage – Industrial Furniture & Decorative pieces On The Square, Unit A3, 17 Heron Road, Belfast, BT3 9LE T 028 9043 4290 E info@onthesquareemporium.com
Refound was started by Jill O’Neill 10 years ago in its Wellington place showroom, bringing together local craftspeople and artists to make inspiring furniture and decorative pieces. Six years ago Refound moved into On The Square Emporium in Waring St, and moved with them to their new premises in Heron Rd. Now situated on the first floor Refound offers a range of up-cycled, re-purposed, re-designed or more precisely Refound pieces. Alongside the finished pieces there are some items for the budding DIY up-cycler, Refound has a range of pin legs and A-frames to finish tables, stools and cabinets and a range of vintage and designer electrical flexes to rewire lights along with fittings and specialist bulbs. But if you want to leave it to the professionals, then making bespoke items is what Refound excels at, if you have an idea in your head for a new dining table or custom industrial light or want to re-purpose an old piece of furniture you have, or want to get an old chair re-upholstered just talk to one of the On The Square/Refound staff and they will make it happen.

EMPORIUM
Mid Century Vintage furniture means different things to different people, to some it is the era they grew up in and full of nostalgia, to others it is a bit twee, but to the connoisseur it is the epitome of style and sophistication conjuring images of 1950s glamour, and the likes of Bridgitte Bardot and Frank Sinatra or the sets of Mad Men. The fine detail design of the Mid Century Modern gave us clean lines, gentle organic curves, a love for different materials and designers that are idolized even today. On The Square Emporium has an ever changing array of Ercol, G-plan, Mackintosh, Jacobson, Eames, Eileen Gray and Parker Knoll. If The Emporium doesn’t have what you are looking for in stock they can source it for you. This is true with all their epochs of furniture and interior design, but more so with Mid Century where customers tend to have a specific designer or model in mind.
The most interesting store in the country An amazing Aladdin’s Cave of interior treasures, with over 14,000sq ft of furniture, rugs, antiques and collectables!
Antiques
The antique section has everything from a lovely Georgian Dutchess dressing table to a French 19th Century bidet side table, a similar one sold to a local celebrity and is frequently used as a wine cooler making it the talk of the town.
There are Victorian dressers, Georgian and Victorian dining tables, an Edwardian mirrored coat rack, muskets and swords, silverware, crystal glasses, perfume bottles, cruet sets, chairs, stools, 4 bells and 2 whistles; and we are only in the first section of The Emporium.
Antiques have seen a marked rise in popularity in recent years, they are no longer the preserve of the country estate but are truly versatile and select focal pieces are used more and more by designers in modern settings. Antique hall tables, coat racks, chest of drawers and desks have become very sought after in both period and contemporary houses over the last few years and antique dining tables and dining chairs are finally seeing a resurgence. Investing in antiques is just that, an investment. Whereas contemporary furniture is worth a fraction of its retail cost the minute it leaves the shop; antiques prices are on the rise. Not just at the highest level, but run of the mill Georgian and Victorian furniture have doubled in price in the last few years and what’s more, they are still selling at half the value they were getting in the late 80s and early 90s. So not only do antiques give you some exquisite furniture, they could also be making money as you use them.
Rugs Bricks make the house, but rugs make the home. A rug can effortlessly transform any room. Not only can a rug change the look and mood of a room, they also have a range of practical benefits – from warming your home, to reducing noise. Rugs are proving more
You will also notice as you walk through the ground floor at On The Square Emporium that the name antiques covers a wide rage of styles over a few hundred years and encompasses everything from 17th century rustic seats through to the 1920s and 30s Art Decco, Arts and Crafts cabinetry and even the utility furniture of the 1930s and 40s (technically not over the 100 year threshold for an antique, but usually finds a home in the antique family). After the 1940s you enter the realm of Mid Century and this is on the first floor in On The Square Emporium.
and more popular as there has been a rise in hard flooring, either with wood flooring, composite or tiling. While these can give crisp lines, provide ease of cleaning and support underfloor heating, they also can leave a room looking cold and too clinical. Also dark floors can drain a lot of light from a room or corridor. A rug or runner can bring warmth, colour and light into an area in one quick unroll!
A rug can change the whole style of a room without the need to redecorate and is a lot cheaper than redecorating. But the main thing a rug brings is a soft comfort and homely feel. They are the centre of the house in style but also a homely area the kids love to play on and the dog dozes off on, in front of the fire on. Rugs bring warmth and a bit of luxury and On The Square Emporium brings you top quality rugs at affordable prices. The Emporium’s rugs are sourced by a third generation rug-trader who has teams of experts on the ground in Afghanistan and Iran, buying rugs and carpets from traditional makers and owners, with a range of traditional cashmere, silk and wool rugs. Because there are no middle men or agents you are getting these rugs at a fraction of the cost they normally retail at. Each rug represents three key elements: Skill, tradition and time. The hand weaving skills are handed down from generation to generation and patterns are often linked to a tribe or village. The time taken to produce one standard size rug would be between nine and twelve months. Given this level of expertise and dedication each rug is not just an investment in something beautiful but a real work of art.
