WELCOME...

Welcome to the Spring/Summer edition of East Belfast Life! In this issue we meet Rachael Harriot, local PR who has helped organise some of the most recent successful events and festivals in east Belfast. We also feature profiles with well known personalities, including writer, broadcaster and all round great guy Rigsy, to uncover their favourite hotspots in the area. East Belfast has a wealth of history and in this issue local historian Aidan Campell, delves into it just a little to uncover some of the stories and photos that have been thought as lost over the years. Musical legend Van Morrison is without a doubt one of Belfast’s most famous sons. In this edition we feature Van’s return to his roots with the announcement of his highly anticipated gig near his former home on Cyprus Avenue. Both locals and visitors to east Belfast are spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out. In this issue we feature a number of the areas most popular eateries. We check out some of the new dining spots making their mark in the area - if you are not hungry now, you soon will be! We hope you enjoy our latest issue, and if you know of a story or event in the area that you think should be covered, please feel free to get in touch. - The Editor CONTACT East Belfast Life ISSN 1745 - 4417 39 Boucher Road, Belfast BT12 6UT Tel: 028 9066 3311 Fax: 028 9038 1915 Email: eastbelfastlife@ulstertatler.com Ulster Tatler Group accepts no responsibility for loss, damage or the return of unsolicited material.

EAST BELFAST : PEOPLE In PROFILE
Rachael Harriott, PR practitioner and owner of Harriott Communications tells us...
“WHY I LOVE... EAST BELFAST” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? For the past 16 years I have predominately worked in the Public Relations industry. During this time I have been extremely fortunate to work with some of the world’s leading brands, companies and communicators. I currently run my own business –
Keep on running - Rachael finds the ‘Parkruns’ through Victoria Park a great way to meet and connect with the east Belfast community.

Harriott Communications. I started the business 4 years ago, and have a wide range of clients who require various communication solutions. Last year I was delighted to work with the team at the EastSide Arts Festival which featured Van Morrison returning to play at his old school – Orangefield. Luckily I also had the privilege of working with a
number of east Belfast businesses and organisations such as Holywood Arches Business Association, The Strand Arts Centre as well as the extremely talented east Belfast Blues singer Kaz Hawkins. HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK? This is a difficult one to answer as genuinely no two days are the same and
EAST BELFAST : PEOPLE In PROFILE things can change very rapidly throughout the working day. Generally, from the moment I get up I am connected into social media using my Ipad. It’s news first followed by browsing my various social media feeds to see what’s trending. The rest of the day depends on client requirements. This can range from writing content for media, providing advice and solutions on handling clients’ communications, meetings, pitching for new business, project planning, photocalls, events – I could go on!
A touch of culture - Rachael was involved in the successful EastSide Arts Festival.
bred legendary literary and musical greats such as CS Lewis and Van Morrison – to name but a few. There is definitely something special about living in the east of the city.
Encouraging creativity - East Belfast is home to some artistic greats, like CS. Lewis (statue pictured) which Rachael says makes the area a special place to live in.
HOW DO YOU RELAX IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I am a mum of two so most of my spare time is spent running after my 12 yr old son Jake who is at Ashfield Boys High School and my daughter Evvie,7 who is at Belmont PS – their social time is hectic. When I am not running after them I unwind by doing Yoga once a week. I have also just discovered the Victoria Park Park Runs on a Saturday morning – this is great fun and I get to meet lots of people from the area. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LIVING IN EAST BELFAST? The community spirit and abundance of creative talent in the area never ceases to amaze me. East Belfast seems to be an area which encourages creativity. I suppose it helps when the area has
WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SOCIALISE IN EAST BELFAST? WHY? It really depends but at the moment it’s at the Victoria Park Parkruns. It has been a great place to meet and connect with people who live and work in the east Belfast community.

Brilliant every time - Rachael loves the food at Graze in Ballyhackamore.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IN EAST BELFAST? WHY? It has to be Belmont Church Tower managed by The National Trust. Not only is it right beside my daughter’s school and the location for her dance classes but there is a great sense of history and heritage surrounding the building. It has been a while since it was restored but it still looks great and has lots of great community events on offer as well as a lovely cafe. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT/ CAFE IN EAST BELFAST? WHY? I have two places on my list – Oliver’s at Belmont for a gorgeous latte and a freshly baked scone with raspberry jam. For lunch or dinner it has to be Graze in Ballyhackamore – fabulous food every time. East Belfast Life 03

A Night at the Movies As part of the celebrations to mark the 120th anniversary of the birth of local film director Brian Desmond Hurst, The Strand Arts Centre recently hosted a special screening of one of his most famous films - ‘Malta Story.’ The movie, which was released in 1953 and starred Sir Alec Guinness, gives a gripping account of an island under siege and helps to show the courage of the people of Malta, the RAF, The Navy and Merchant Navy in surviving one of the most bombed places of the Second World War.

Celebrating A Historic Victory Members and friends of Glentoran Community Trust met recently for a Gala Dinner in Belfast City Hall to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Vienna Cup win by Glentoran FC. The 1914 achievement was remarkable from sporting, social and historical perspectives. The team of part-timers, mainly shipyard workers, competed against top European sides in Prague, Berlin and Vienna culminating in a game against a Vienna Select XI to win the trophy. This was set against a backdrop of the impending conflict which became World War 1.

A Legend Remembered
One of Northern Ireland’s greatest footballers and east Belfast’s most famous sons, Danny Blanchflower was recently honoured by the unveiling of an Ulster History Circle Blue Plaque at his former home on Grace Avenue. The Ulster History Circle’s Chairman, Chris Spurr said: “Danny Blanchflower’s contribution to the game he loved, whether as a player with Glentoran, Spurs and Northern Ireland, or later as a manager, is acknowledged as being amongst the best. He excelled, too, as a football journalist of note, and we are particularly grateful to Belfast City Council for its support 02 towards the plaque.”

EAST BELFAST : PEOPLE In PROFILE
DJ and Broadcaster Rigsy, tells us...
“WHY I LOVE... EAST BELFAST” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? I had vague ambitions to work in music journalism but ended up presenting ‘Across the Line’, the show on Radio Ulster that I grew up listening to! Having promoted gigs for my own band back in the day, I also got into running club nights and DJing from a pretty young age. So these days it’s a mix of promoting, DJing and broadcasting. With some writing for the Daily Mirror and the like. A bit of everything, really. HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK? There isn’t a typical day. There’s maybe a typical week, in that I usually know what I’m doing on a particular day, but even then it’s far from normal 9-5 stuff. But most days are office work and meetings from 10-6 - then dinner and maybe go to the gym or football training - then it’s straight to either our Belfast or Dublin venue to DJ or manage a club night - until the wee hours. And it feels like I’m online sorting social network stuff...pretty much 24/7.
WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SOCIALISE IN EAST BELFAST? WHY? Does The Oval count? I’m a massive Glentoran fan and until I started to play football myself, I’d have been at The Oval every second Saturday. I’ve had some of the best (and a load of of the worst) days there in the last few years and made some good friends on those terraces. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IN EAST BELFAST? WHY? Cregagh Glen. It’s a tough enough wee trek up that river - and very muddy - but it’s great to be able to disappear so close to the city. The dog loves it too!
Hidden Gem - Superb views of Belfast are available from the top of Gregagh Glen.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT/ CAFE IN EAST BELFAST? WHY? This will sound ridiculous but I’m a big fan of the wee greasy spoon cafe just around the corner from my house. It’s called Taste and I’m in there eating fries or grabbing breakfast baps way more than I should be!
HOW DO YOU RELAX IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I don’t really have any spare time these days - not that I’m complaining - doing the type of work I do can be great fun of course. But I usually spend any downtime watching TV shows I’ve seen millions of times before - Friends, Frasier, Simpsons and the like. Not exactly high brow stuff, just something that allows me to turn my brain off! I also take Saturday afternoons to play amateur for the mighty Newtown Forest IIIs up in Newtownbreda although that is about as far from relaxing as it’s possible to get. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LIVING IN EAST BELFAST? I’ve always found it a friendly welcoming place - especially where I am (off the Cregagh Road) It’s far away from the city centre to feel nice and sheltered, but close enough to nip in quick sharp. My neighbours are lovely and there’s a real community feel. We definitely look out for each other, which is the east Belfast way I guess. 16 East Belfast Life
When not playing for Newtown Forest IIIs, Rigsy spends his Saturday afternoon’s at The Oval, home of Glentoran FC.

A LOOK INTO THE PAST ‘East Belfast Revisited’ Volumes 1 and 2 are the two latest local history books covering areas of East Belfast by author Aidan Campbell.
‘East Belfast Revisited’ Volumes 1 and 2 are spoken and illustrated history books featuring old photographs and images telling how the area has developed over the past 150 years Each book takes the form of a journey along a main arterial route in east Belfast and revisits areas covered in the author’s previous publications but largely with freshly uncovered archive material. ‘East Belfast Revisited Volume 1’ takes another look at Belmont, Sydenham, Bloomfield, King’s Road, Ballyhackamore, Stormont and Dundonald, with Volume 2 focussing on Knock, Cherryvalley, Gilnahirk, Castlereagh and Cregagh.
Belmont Road, 1907 (approx).
It examines various familiar episodes in daily life including shops, sports teams, large houses, small houses, families, the railway, roads, road works, road traffic accidents, cars and vans, trams, trolleybuses, the opening of the airport, schools, World War One, World War Two, weddings, Royal visits, social events, fallen trees, graveyards, businesses, banks, churches, cinemas and parliament buildings. Belmont road
The 1901 Belfast Street Directory notes that the first resident on the left hand side of Belmont Road, in what is now the Ulster Unionist Party premises, was W. Smith who operated a posting establishment. There
were no other streets listed on this section of Belmont Road as far as Ranfurly Street (now Ranfurly Drive). Most of this land was occupied by the home of Robert Ferguson, ‘Sydenham House’ and Ferguson Drive is named after him. By 1907 (around the time of the photo to the left) this site is occupied by ‘New shop vacant, stabling and yard’. SYDENHAM STATION
This is how the Belfast & County Down Railway at Sydenham station looked (bottom left) from Station Road in 1929. The station was originally known as ‘Ballymisert Halt’, having taken its name from the surrounding townland. In those days it was a mere stopping place without a

It looks like a high-powered royal visit in this photograph (above) of cheering and flag waving onlookers on the Upper Newtownards Road not far from Rosepark at Stormont. There seems to be quite a lack of security and it is very hard to imagine that the public would be allowed to get so close today (No ‘Risk Assessments’ in those days!) The occasion is probably related to the Coronation of King George VI in 1937 who may well be seated in the leading limousine which has a very small royal crest on its roof and an open back seat.

BREDA ACADEMY PURPLE
“Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow” Breda Academy will open on the 1st September 2015 formed from the amalgamation of Knockbreda and Newtownbreda High Schools. The new school will be based on the current Newtownbreda site and will admit up to 170 students in each year which, together with a sixth form of 150, will give it a total enrolment of 1000 students. Principal Designate, Matthew Munro, has been working closely with staff and students at both schools and a great deal has already been achieved in preparing for the transition. Virtually all the teaching and non-teaching staff appointments have now been made. Students have also been deciding on their options choices for GCSE and at A’level, led by Mr Richard Massey and Mrs Gayle Glover respectively. Both staff have commented on the real excitement of students as they have seen for themselves the benefits of a larger school in the broader range of courses they are being offered. Students have also been delighted to learn that the programme of personalised use of iPads in teaching and learning will be extended. This was started at Newtownbreda in September 2014 and the interim Board of
Governors have decided that it will be taken further in Breda Academy. All students starting GCSE or A’level courses will have the use of an individual iPad provided by the school to enhance their learning. Staff from Knockbreda have been receiving training to bring them up to speed in the use of these innovative tools in education. The training was arranged by Mr Massey, a Vice Principal at Breda. It was described by Mrs Charleen Gordon, currently Principal at Knockbreda and appointed as the other Vice-Principal at Breda, as “really exciting and inspiring.”
Mr Massey and Mrs Gordon, Vice-Principals at Breda Academy.

Awards Night Honours East Belfast Pharmacists Two east Belfast pharmacies have been awarded a top industry accolade at the highly esteemed annual Pharmacy in Focus Awards, held recently at the Ramada Hotel. McDowell’s Pharmacy on the Newtownards Road walked away with the award for ‘Community Pharmacy Initiative’ supported by Actavis UK. The pharmacy impressed judges with their participation in a programme run by BCPP (Building the Community Pharmacy Partnership) where they worked alongside residents from a local hostel promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being. Local man Gordon Pollock, owner of Pollock’s Chemist on the Albertbridge Road, also did the east proud as he walked away with the ‘Pharmacist of the Year’ award which is regarded as one of the most esteemed categories, supported by Numark. Gordon, who has been the owner and pharmacist at Pollock’s chemist on the Albertbridge Road for thirty years, impressed judges not only due to his length of service, but the special rapport he has built up with members of the local community and outreach to local community groups. Maureen Delaney, organiser of the event said: “Once again, the Pharmacy in Focus Awards were another roaring success with

not only a fantastic turnout, but entries were at such an exceptionally high standard right across the board, making it very difficult for our judges! I’d like to thank everyone

AWARD WINNING PRACTICE JONATHAN HALL OPTICIANS RECENTLY SCOOPED Optometry practice of the year AT THE National healthcare awards for Northern Ireland Jonathan Hall Opticians is located in Kings Square just off the Kings Road in east Belfast. Jonathan opened the practice in 1997 and has been looking after the eyecare of the local community and beyond ever since. Last year, Business Eye magazine launched the first ever National Healthcare Awards for Northern Ireland. All sectors of healthcare were invited to put forward their own case, to be in with a chance of being shortlisted for their individual award category. Jonathan spoke to his team, and they all agreed that it was something they would like to be involved in. After much hard work, Jonathan sent in his story, explaining why the practice should be shortlisted for an award.
Jonathan took his whole team along to the evening, and he was very glad he did , as they were voted winners of the Optometry Practice of the Year 2014 . Over the next few days and weeks, the practice was non stop with customers and friends alike, coming in congratulating all the staff at the practice on their success, all agreeing that it was very well deserved. So what next for Halls Opticians? Jonathan admitted that: “Being an award winning practice is really something for me and my team to live up to.” It is yet another challenge in the face of ever increasing competition in the market place, but one he
is confident they are well equipped for. “At the practice every decision we make is in the best interests of our patients, that is our philosophy , now and for the future.” Here’s to the future!
The judges concured and Halls Opticians was shortlisted for Optometry Practice of the Year, one of the most highly contested categories - with 7 other opticians in the running. Ronaldo to the Oval? It was one of the biggest sporting evenings Belfast had ever experienced, as Carl ‘The Jackal’ Frampton defended his IBF superbantamweight title against Chris Avalos. The world’s media, celebrities and many excited boxing fans had made their way to the Odyssey Arena to watch the big fight. Earlier in the day Glentoran took on Dungannon Swifts in the Quarter- Final of the Irish Cup at The Oval, and rumours had spread that a very special visitor was set to attend the game. Real Madrid superstar and current FIFA World Player of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo, like many footballers is a keen boxing fan. Speculation was rife that the Portugesse international would come to the fight as a guest of FIFA Vice President and former Cliftonville FC Chairman, Jim Boyce. But this was not the only sporting event in Belfast that Ronaldo would attend that day.
Twitter goes wild as Ronaldo is ‘spotted’ in his Glens scarf at The Oval .
A photo emerged on Twitter of Ronaldo in a red and green ‘Glentoran’ scarf, with word that he was in the directors box at The Oval enjoying the game. Social Media went into meltdown, with some claiming that Boyce had taken Ronaldo to The Oval, because he wanted to experience some local Northern Ireland football. The story turned out to be a hoax, but it certainly cause quite a stir in the east of the city, with locals claiming to have spotted the former Manchester United man in a series of pubs and chip shops. Ronaldo didn’t make it to Belfast that day, but he missed a great day of sport as Frampton retained his title and Glentoran won 3-0 on their march to the Irish Cup Final.

discovering new heroes A Northern Ireland wide challenge to commemorate the centenary of World War 1 by researching the histories of ‘local heroes’ has become a labour of love for two east Belfast School Pupils. Campbell College students Sam Carrigan and Brian Wilson were continually inspired as they discovered details of the personal history of fellow Campbellian Edmund De Wind, a posthumous recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy. Edmund, who was born in Comber in 1883, was educated at Campbell College before emigrating to Canada where he worked for the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Alberta. In 1914 he enlisted to serve in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and fought at St Eloi, Ypres and the Somme before undergoing officer cadet training in England. He was commissioned into The Royal Irish Rifles in September 1917. While serving with the 15th Battalion The Royal Irish Rifles close to St Quentin, Edmund was caught up in the German Spring Offensive and was killed in action at Grugies in Picardy. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on that day. De Wind was officially remembered in his home town of Comber in 2007, through the unveiling of an Ulster History Circle “Blue Plaque” in his honour.
Discussing the life of De Wind, Sam Corrigan said: “We’ve always been aware of the story of Edmund De Wind. The school is immensely proud of the leadership and courage he showed – but it was only when we went into the detail of his life that we began fully to understand just how exceptional he was. Our research gave us a different level of understanding about The Great War and, I think, encouraged us to appreciate the sense of duty that sent men to serve.”
Edmund De Wind was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his valour during The Great War.
The Citation which accompanied the award of the Victoria Cross to Edmund De Wind reads: “For most conspicuous bravery and self-sacrifice on the 21st March, 1918, at the Race Course Redoubt near Grugies. For seven hours he held this most important post and though twice wounded and practically single-handed, he maintained his position until another section could be got to his help. On two occasions, with two NCOs only,

he got out on top under heavy machine gun and rifle fire, and cleared the enemy out of the trench, killing many. He continued to repel attack after attack until he was mortally wounded and collapsed. His valour, selfsacrifice and example were of the highest order.” Edmund’s body was never recovered but he is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial at the Somme. His name can be seen at the foot of a pillar at the West front of St Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast and Mount De Wind in the Canadian province of Alberta is named in honour of his valour. His old school remembers him still with a plaque prominently and proudly displayed. Brian Wilson said: “This project reinforced with us the importance of remembering and respecting all those who served and gave a new dimension to the Rolls of Honour that we see in school every day.” East Belfast Life 27

The Golf team have been no less successful becoming the Ulster Schools Matchplay Champions; the senior team will now contest the All-Ireland title. The Badminton team, on the other hand, have already secured their All-Ireland title becoming the U19 champions and ensuring that they maintain their tradition of success. However, it is not just the sportsmen who have kept the Inst flag flying high, Year 13 won the NI European Youth Parliament title in a fiercely contested final after a day of intense debate and discussion. The team now progress to the UK final where they hope to improve upon last year’s third place. Finally this term our musicians continued to wow audiences at the annual Charity Concert. As ever, it was a mix of classical and contemporary music arranged by our visionary musical director Mr Bolton MBE with the help of his team. The immense pride the music staff and pupils take in their performances made both nights unique events thoroughly enjoyed by all present. It has been an extremely busy and rewarding term for the whole school, the spectrum of success demonstrates the breadth of talents of Inst students and the ability of staff to recognise and nurture them. This has undoubtedly been a term which has proven that our students embody our motto, ‘Excellence and Participation’. Ethan Glover, captain of the Medallion XV, holds the Medallion Shield. This is only the third time a school has completed a double win in the Cup and the Shield against the same school.
The Senior Badminton team of Stephen Moss, Conor Beattie, Niall Armstrong and Philip Moneypenny became Under 19 All Ireland champions in Dublin on 25th March. Winning the Irish Senior Championship was an excellent end to an outstanding season which saw the team win both the Ulster and Irish Championships.

EAST BELFAST : PEOPLE In PROFILE
Neil Robinson, Dispensing Optician at Jonathan Hall Opticians tells us...
“WHY I LOVE... EAST BELFAST” the world of eyewear, especially the latest frame and sunglass trends. HOW DO YOU RELAX IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I do enjoy cooking at home, mostly just for the family or on occasion to entertain friends over a few glasses of wine. I also enjoy heading to the Belmont Road or Ballyhackamore, either for few drinks or a quick bite to eat . I do try my best to get to the gym as often as I can, keeping in shape is important and yes it actually helps me to relax.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? On leaving school I really had no idea what I wanted to do, then my dad suggested trying the dispensing optician course in London. I had nothing to lose so off I went. Most of my 25 plus years as a dispensing optician has been spent in and around the greater Belfast area, and has been considerably varied to say the least. Having worked for the big multinationals and the independent sector, I am now with Jonathan Hall Opticians in Kings Square on the Kings Road. HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK? A typical day has many different aspects for me, mainly helping patients with the selection of their new eyewear, supporting the optometrist with the daily clinic and all other front of house duties. I also like to keep up to date with all the latest things in

boys too. My wife and I like nothing better than sitting on the balcony on a sunny Saturday afternoon watching the cricket. Although there is always something going on in the CI social calendar. I must admit Ballyhackamore is hard to beat for an evening out with friends, plenty of choice and it always has a great buzz about it, and its only round the corner. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IN EAST BELFAST? WHY? It’s not so much hidden but to me Bennetts is a real treat for us, for a lazy cooked breakfast, just whenever we get a chance. Rarely do we ever go in and there isn’t someone you know there enjoying the fare.
Neil’s favourite restaurant is Il Pirata in Ballyhackamore.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT/ CAFE IN EAST BELFAST? WHY? Il Pirata would be my favourite, it is just that little bit different to most other places I’ve tried, for any lovers of Italian food this is a must. This is actually a tougher question than I thought, and none of my boys would forgive me if I didn’t also mention Capers Pizza, we all love it.

FIVE HEALTH STORE ESSENTIALS every Home should have EPSOM SALTS This old fashioned remedy is making a major comeback because bathing regularly in epsom salts can have a number of health benefits. Relaxing in an epsom salt bath for half an hour allows magnesium to absorb through the skin into our muscles. An epsom salt bath is the perfect remedy for aching muscles if you’ve had a tough gym session or have aching shoulders after sitting at your desk all day. The sulphur in these salts works as a natural detoxifier and can help combat water retention, celebrities such as Victoria Beckham use epsom salt baths prior to special appearances to ensure they look their best. Apple cider vinegar A relatively common ingredient that is delicious when used to dress a salad, however, this humble condiment has numerous potential health benefits. It can be used as a natural remedy for indigestion and heartburn, just try drinking a small glass of water with apple cider vinegar before or after a meal. There is evidence that apple cider vinegar can support blood sugar balance for those who are watching their blood glucose levels. Drinking a little apple cider vinegar in water can also help reduce sinus congestion and it can also be dabbed on pimples as a natural spot remedy. coconut oil Long considered unhealthy because of its high saturated fat content, we now know that coconut oil contains
healthy fats that the body can use readily as an energy source. These fats are called medium chain triglycerides and our body converts them to substances called ketones which can be used by both the body and brain for energy. Coconut oil is a source of natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal compounds making it an excellent treatment for skin conditions and in a recent clinical trial they found that coconut oil was successful in treating eczema in young children. probiotics A probiotic supplement is a capsule or powder packed with billions of live bacteria, but don’t let that put you off. Probiotics are good bacteria that live in our digestive system and play an essential role in keeping us healthy. Think of these supplements as a super concentrated form of those little yoghurt drinks many of us have with breakfast every day. Supporting a healthy population of good bacteria in our intestines keeps our digestive system working properly and can help reduce symptoms such as bloating, constipation and diarrhoea. They do all this while also protecting us from infection (especially tummy bugs) and supporting our immune system (70% of our immune system is in our gut). vitamin d Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin because when the sun shines on our skin it stimulates the production of vitamin D in our bodies. It will come as no surprise that as a result of living in our climate many of us become vitamin D deficient during winter. In fact in Northern Ireland we do not produce vitamin D in the period between October and May and, therefore, many of us will benefit from taking
a vitamin D supplement during this time. Vitamin D is well known for its protective effect on bone health, but it plays numerous other important roles for our health. Vitamin D is crucially important to our immune health while also acting as a natural anti-inflammatory and it can support mood in those who experience the winter blues. Always consult with a qualified nutritional advisor or your GP before taking a nutritional supplement.

EBM have another project in the same premises – recycle – this is a similar project where good quality second hand bikes get a second life with 35 safety checks being carried out and faults fixed before the bikes are resold, like the furniture, through the 12 restore shops. Can you repair bikes and/or wish to learn more about this project? You can even work on a bike for yourself – for FREE in return for 40+ hours of volunteer time in the Earn a Bike scheme. Are you an out of work painter or upholsterer with time on your hands or maybe you can just turn your hand to these tasks and wish to give something back to a charity? If so EBM would love to hear from you. You can work on a day and at a time that suits you but you do need to be able to make your way to the centre by public transport (expenses for travel can be agreed if you are a suitable volunteer). You will learn new skills, meet new friends, gain lost confidence and help a local charity at the same time! All income raised from the sale of the bikes and the furniture goes back into East Belfast Mission, an East Belfast charity that helps local people through their various projects. For more information please visit the website www.ebm.org.uk. Are you on a mission to volunteer? We want to hear from you today. Please ring and speak with Lynsey at East Belfast Mission on 028 9045 8560 or Nick at the recycling centre on 028 9074 2219.

a birthday to remember Van Morrison is set to toast his 70th birthday with a homecoming show on Cyprus Avenue
Van Morrison’s 70th birthday gig on Cyprus Avenue this summer is one of the most anticipated music events ever held in Northern Ireland. Van, who immortalised the tree-lined east Belfast avenue in some of his most iconic songs, has attracted global interest for the one-off outdoor event on August 31st. Tickets sold out instantly with Morrison fans from four continents making plans to hear the music legend perform in his own backyard (almost literally). The concert is taking place as an epic conclusion to the fantastic EastSide Arts Festival which runs from August 19th. Speaking at the launch of the concert ‘Van The Man’ said: “It (Cyprus Avenue) wasn’t far from where I was brought up and it was a very different scene. To me, it was a very mystical place. It was a whole avenue lined with trees and I found it a place where I could think.” Many of the fans making their way to Belfast for the gig are using it as a excuse to finally pay their first visit to Belfast, and in particular east Belfast and the many haunts of a young Van Morrison so fantastically brought to attention in the Van Morrison
trail (www.communitygreenway.co.uk/ vanmorrisontrail). International visitors have been encouraged to leave comments on the ‘Van Morrison live on Cyprus Avenue’ Facebook page, with many highlighting their excitement about visiting the east of the city. Janice Roseingrave from New Zealand said: “A once in a lifetime event on Cyprus Avenue. I can’t believe that I am going.” Colleen Aller from San Diego posted this message: “As an avid fan from San Diego, having seen Van Morrison over 200 times, I consider this upcoming Cyprus Avenue show akin to finding and sipping from the Holy Grail.” Festival organisers say Cyprus Avenue residents have welcomed the gig. “Residents are excited,” Maurice Kinkead told the Belfast Telegraph. “The feedback has been universally positive. It will be a party atmosphere, a warm, sunny, dry, positive day for east Belfast.” The concert is something for everyone to look forward to, a real celebration of east Belfast music and culture, and a chance for east Belfast to welcome the rest of the world.
“Cyprus Avenue is our Penny Lane, our Strawberry Fields, our Waterloo Sunset. And Van Morrison is our Paul McCartney, our John Lennon, our Ray Davies. Iconic artist in his inspirational location. On his birthday. Magical.” Stuart Bailie, music writer and broadcaster. 48 East Belfast Life
“Van Morrison singing Cyprus Avenue is always special. Van Morrison singing IN Cyprus Avenue will be a once-in-alifetime experience that we simply couldn’t miss.” Andrew & Gayle Robertson, Adelaide, South Australia

EAST BELFAST : kitchen profile
born and bread Belmont’s Stephen Chisholm, 2013 Great Irish Bake off winner and head baker in Oliver’s Coffee Bar, talks to us about life inside and outside of the kitchen. WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT OLIVER’S COFFEE BAR ? I am the head baker at Oliver’s, and after I graduate this June with a degree in Business I will be helping to run the business. HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK? The day starts at 5am, I start baking all the breads including sourdough, ciabatta, granary, baguettes etc, then I start prepping our sweets, pastries and daily dishes. The daily dishes change on a regular basis in order to offer variety and use seasonal ingredients. We prepare everything on site to ensure customers get the freshest product possible when it’s at the height of its flavour. WHAT GOT YOU INTERESTED IN BAKING, AND DO YOU SEE IT AS A JOB OR A PASSION? Cooking and baking has interested me from a very young age. My parents would encourage me to experiment in the kitchen or even cook the family dinner for the night. As time went on I found myself really getting into it and wanting to learn more so I began to push myself, read deeper into methods and try things out. Luckily I am now in a situation where my passion has become my job. Even after I finish work I still go home and bake/cook for myself and family. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR CAREER, AND WINNING THE ‘GREAT IRISH BAKE OFF’ Back in 2013 I entered and eventually won the ‘Great Irish Bake Off’. The series was 8 episodes long with 12 amateur bakers from all over Ireland battling it out each week for survival. After winning many opportunities opened up for me. 54 East Belfast Life
Stephen hails from and works in Belmont, and describes east Belfast as his ‘social hotspot.’
I broadcast a recipe on a Wednesday afternoon for BBC Radio Ulster once every 2/3 weeks, I am the baking, pastry and dessert tutor in the Belfast cookery school and I also work closely with the Taste of Ulster team with filming and promoting NI as a food hot spot. Irregular work crops up too as I am often asked to demonstrate on stage at food events, write recipes for magazines and cater for private events.
Stephen’s gingerbread ‘Dunluce Castle’ which helped him win The Great Irish Bake Off.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT YEAR OR SO? I don’t know what the next year will hold for me. I’ve been offered pastry chef jobs by many restaurants around Belfast and NI which I have turned down. Cheffing is a tough job and requires long, sometimes antisocial, hours. I like my current set up in Oliver’s as I start and finish early and the work is more suited to my style. I would
like to travel at some point over the next few years and work in some bakeries and restaurants in Scandinavia, America or Australia in order to develop my skills and broaden my horizons. WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF WORK? I like to keep active through playing Rugby and exercising in the gym. Skiing is another passion of mine and I also happen to be a fully qualified ski instructor. During the winter season I’m usually travelling around Europe teaching for a few weeks at a time. The brewing industry really intrigues me and I have taken up homebrewing over the past 2 years. There seems to be a lot of information to take in with it so I plan to get more involved after I graduate. I have brewed several batches of beer which have (mostly) turned out well! AND FINALLY...WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT EAST BELFAST? This area has always been my home, where I have grown up as a kid into an even bigger kid today! Even now I love to return to local parks and playing fields I went to as a kid. The variety of shops, bars and restaurants here is ever expanding and we have some real talent coming through in some places. The best thing for me is that my friends and family are all located around east Belfast. It’s very easy for us to meet up or arrange something to do, so I guess I always see here as my social hotspot.

dine by the river east belfast life’s philip mclaughlin visits cutters wharf, on the banks of the lagan When I arrived at Cutters Bar & Grill on a mild spring evening the first thing that registered with me was just how beautiful a location it is in. Perched on the banks of the Lagan, just a short hop over the bridge from east Belfast, Cutters is one of the best places to enjoy a drink or two when the sun shines in the city. This is the Cutters that i know, warm days and cold beer, but I had yet to try the restaurant so it was with excitement that my partner and I headed inside and climbed the stairs.
team power their way up the river, and as our starter quickly arrived we did not envy them one bit. As soon as our starters were served we commented on how well they were presented. The pineapple salsa on my honey chilli chicken complemented the Asian salad wonderfully and left me looking forward to the main course.
After finishing our mains, we made sure we left room for the particularly yummy sounding desserts. I went for the tarte au chocolate with raspberry sorbet, while my partner, feeling particularly full opted for an Americano. When the dish arrived, I was keen to see if it tasted as good as it looked - it did!
My partner’s lime and chilli prawns were juicy and tasty, complemented perfectly with the crisp and fresh garlic bread.
The pastry on the tarte was sweet and crunchy and the chocolate topping and raspberry sorbet just rounded the whole meal of perfectly.
We were instantly made to feel right at home with the cozy, ultra modern interior and the friendly welcome from the staff. After being shown to our seats, my partner and I spent time perusing the extensive food and drink before making our choices.
For main course I decided on the full rack of BBQ glazed baby back ribs with shoestring fries and slaw. My partner opted for the lemon and tarragon infused chicken salad. My BBQ ribs were succulent, tasty and just fell off the bone. The BBQ glaze added a real tasty flavour that went perfectly with the delicious shoestring fries and slaw. My partner thoroughly enjoyed her salad, and was delighted with her selection. The portions were generous and there was plenty of choice of sides if we were so inclined.
The starters included soup, lime and chilli prawns and pulled pork bruschetta and a duck egg omelette. The main courses seemed to offer a bit of everything; beef bolognaise, burgers, slow roasted belly of pork, steaks, salads, chicken, fish and pizzas. In the end I opted for a starter of honey chilli chicken with Asian salad and pineapple salsa. While my partner decided on the warm sautéed lime and chilli prawns, with coriander and garlic bread. Sitting back to enjoy the view out of the window, we could see a rowing 56 East Belfast Life
Relaxing into our meal we were able to chat freely as the restaurant had a busy vibe without being overly noisy. The waiting staff nipped around the restaurant chatting to customers and making recommendations about food and wine. There were many other diners in the restaurant, intimate parties of two, as well as larger groups of six or eight.
After finishing our meal and drinks we thanked the staff for the great evening and headed downstairs, deciding the night was still young, we nipped into the bar for a drink before heading back over the bridge. Overall our experience at Cutters was excellent – the service was first class and the food was particularly tasty and filling. Cutters is renowned as the perfect summer drinking location but having enjoyed a lovely meal in the beautiful and warm restaurant, i can confirm that Cutters is a great location all year round.

Something to get your Teeth into The Ballyhackamore Business Association recently announced the launch of the ‘Ballysnackamore Food Tour.’ Ballyhackamore has become a centre of cafe and food culture, not just in east Belfast but for the whole of the city.
A dedicated food tour had long been mooted as a great idea and indeed its announcement was met with universal praise and excitement. The first tickets for the first tours went on sale on 1st December and sold out very quickly. The initial tours, which took place on Saturday
The fantastic success of the first tours lead the Ballyhackamore Business Association to announce further dates for February and March - which again proved incredibly popular. Indeed they hope to run two tours a month from April onwards, and as there is such an amazing choice of restaurants in Ballyhackamore the venues on the tour will changes from time to time.

Get Gardening The sun is coming out, the evenings are getting longer and it’s heating up in the garden. Braeside Nursery’s Mark Hill offers green-fingered advice for Summer. April is the best month to plant conifers and other evergreens, using peat or bark as a base. You can also continue to plant and prune pot grown trees, shrubs and Roses. A great way to enhance your Roses or other flowering shrubs is to apply a Rose fertilizer. Hardy annual flowers can be sown if the soil is warm and dry on the surface but moist below. Gladioli should be planted at least 6” deep. Other summer bulbs, corms and tubers can also be planted. Take the time to plant new season’s herbaceous perennials, replacing inferior varieties with new improved cultivars. As summer comes, we all begin to long for fresh, juicy fruit. Now’s the perfect time
to plant strawberries and other tree and bush fruit. These should be sprayed to protect against pests and diseases. Also prepare for tasty vegetables: sow seeds of beetroot, summer and autumn cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, onions, parsnip, pea, spinach and turnip, plant out second early and maincrop potatoes, lettuce, cauliflowers, cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts and onion sets.
Marigolds and Zinnias are quick from seed to flower. Prick out seedlings into trays of good potting compost.
Inside the greenhouse, much more can be done. Sow seeds of melons, cucumbers, aubergines and peppers. Sow seeds of celery, outdoor tomato, courgette, runner and french beans to plant out next month. Aside from food, you can complete sowing of summer bedding plants. French and African
And let’s not forget the faithful house plants. Step up watering and feeding now but don’t swamp them. Watch out for greenfly and red spider mites and treat with an insecticide. Move pot bound plants into larger pots.
One of the most important features of your garden is a well-groomed lawn. Sow grass seed to make new lawns or to patch up bare areas and apply a weed and feed to enhance the lawn. We advise cutting the grass when the weather is mild.
Happy gardening!

THE DRIVE FOR SUCCESS 68 East Belfast Life
RUGBY STAR FRANCO VAN DER MERWE IS LOOKING FOR HOME COMFORTS IN ULSTER’S RACE FOR THE PRO12 TITLE Lifted by the news that the Pro12 Final will take place at Kingspan Stadium, Franco van der Merwe says the Ulster team is ready to do everything they can to secure silverware this season. The South African star spoke of his pride in playing for Ulster, how he has settled into life here, and how a call from an Ulster legend helped him make the biggest move of his career. “I had always wanted to play overseas, but I had an idea that it would be in Japan or France, where a lot of South Africans play. Then I got a call from David Humphreys to ask if I’d be interested in playing for Ulster.” After speaking to one great, Van der Merwe sought the advice of another pair of Ulster heroes, his fellow countrymen
EAST BELFAST : motoring
Ruan Piennar and Johann Muller, and the two could have not been more forthcoming in their praise: “They were so positive about everything to do with Ulster. The facilities, the stadium, the management and coaching.” With the glowing endorsement ringing in his ears, Franco and his wife made the huge decision to uproot and move to Northern Ireland, and they have not looked back since. “We love it here, it is such a beautiful country, the people have been great to us, so friendly and they have helped us settle in so easily,” and as for playing for Ulster, it has lived up to eveything the giant South African expected, and then some: “Not a lot of clubs have the class of Ulster. Everything about the set up here is world class. Everyone at the club has bought into the plan for its future, and it is such a privelage for me to be a part of it and see what Ulster is all about. My time here has far exceeded my expectations.” Despite seeking advice from various friends and fellow professionals about
playing for Ulster, there was one thing that Franco was not prepared for - the legendary Kingspan atmosphere, and indeed there is one particular song that brings a huge smile to his face: “The atmosphere the fans create is incredible, we don’t have that tradition of singing throughout the entire game in South Africa, so to see and hear it is so special. My first home game was against Exeter and I didn’t know about the ‘Stand Up for the Ulster Men’ song, and coming out of the tunnel it was the first thing to be heard. I just thought WOW! If I wasn’t ready for the game before, I sure was then. The fans singing just gives you that extra something when you are tired in a game, it makes you go that little bit further, you want to do it for them.” The dangling carrot at the end of the season is a potential Pro12 Final at Kingspan and after the disappointing European Cup camapaign, it is a target that Franco and the whole Ulster team are focussed on: “The European Cup just didn’t go our way this year. For a lot of players, myself included, and coaches, this
was a new competition to compete in. “We have also had an incredible amount of injuries this season, so it was always going to be tough. But now the focus is 100% on the Pro12, that is what our season is all about now. Of course it would be amazing to play the final at home, but we have to take it one game at a time and treat each game like a final, that’s how important it is. We have a lot of guys coming back from injury, the academy players are gaining more and more experience and we will be getting the boys back from the Irish 6 Nations squad, so there is still so much for us to play for this season.” It will not be easy for Ulster and some tough ties lie ahead if they are to secure the Pro12 trophy, but everything about Franco van der Merwe suggests he and the team are up for the challenge. sticking to tradition
Derek Black takes a close look at the new Skoda Fabia. The third generation of Skoda’s Fabia is a more grown-up car but continues the company’s tradition of offering value and economy. Built on the VW group’s MQB platform, its engineering roots are now closer to siblings such as the Polo and the Ibiza. Bigger and wider than before, it has more inside space and the largest boot in its class! Yet it is lighter in weight and this makes for frugal motoring. You will not pay more than £20 to tax the new Fabia for a year! This is because all the available engines are extremely efficient and meet the stringent Euro 6 emissions standard. There are improvements of up to 8% over the previous model. They start with a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol that comes in 60PS or 75PS form. Then there is a 1.2-litre petrol with 90 or 110PS. These power outputs are respectable for the capacity of the engines. The bottom line, however, is that all the petrol units return in or around 60mpg combined with emissions of between 106 and 109g/km. Most buyers will choose petrol but for those who do high annual mileages there is an interesting new three-cylinder, 1.4-litre diesel available with 90PS or 105PS output. It is said to be remarkably smooth to drive and is extremely economical with the potential of
up to 83mpg on the combined cycle! Which engine to choose? All are good so it depends on whether your driving is mostly around town or if you do long distances regularly. The top diesel accelerates to 62mph in 10.1 seconds and has a top speed of 120mph while the starter petrol takes 15.7 seconds for the sprint and tops at 99mph.
Priced from £10,600, the new Fabia hatchback has matured offering more comfort, economy and space. While it is firmly in the VW camp in terms of engineering, it is still an individualistic Skoda in terms of style. Buyers can personalise their cars further by various colour combinations for the roof, mirrors and wheels. An estate version will follow next month.
A five or six-speed manual gearbox is standard with the option of the excellent seven-speed DSG automatic on the top petrol and diesel engines. Stop-start is fitted to reduce consumption in heavy traffic and there is a clever system that recharges the battery on braking. The cabin of the Fabia has been upgraded with a large colour touch screen and ‘mirror’ technology that allows you to use all the apps - including navigation - from your smart phone. Other available options now include keyless entry, front and rear parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers and Bluetooth and USB connections. There are three trim levels: S, SE and SE L. All are fitted with six airbags as standard driver, passenger, side and curtain - along with Bluetooth, a DAB radio, USB and 3.5mm auxiliary sockets. Air conditioning, alloy wheels, acoustic rear parking sensors and Front Assist with City Emergency Braking are fitted on SE models and above.

Colette “I’ve been an Occupational Therapist for many years. I currently work in a multi-disciplinary team helping people to manage stress, increase self-confidence, develop healthy lifestyle practices, manage pain and return to work. I trained as a Bio-Energy practitioner in 2002. I’m also a registered Reiki Master and EFT therapist. I recently qualified as an Animal Healer and am in the process of expanding my healing practice to working with small animals.”
Lorna Once described by a journalist, when writing an article about the therapy, as “looking like a friendly librarian”, I felt this quite a pleasing assessment - the roles are similar - aiming to assist. It feels good to help a client solve a problem or to offer a helping hand in one’s healing process, or to assist one to move through change. I have had the privilege of playing many roles in my life teacher, homemaker, parent, clerical worker. Everything we do is based on the choices we make and training to be a Bio-Energy therapist has enabled me to maintain buoyancy, good health and lead a life I am very happy with.

So much so that when the iconic Bridge End flyover ‘Teenage Kicks’ mural featuring the lyrics was removed in 2013 over 7000 people took to social media to protest. Two years later thanks to an East Belfast Partnership lead project – it is back. Reworked and reinstalled by the same artists who painted the original, Blaze FX, but this time with the help from young people from the Short Strand/Newtownards Road (Ballymac) interface.
