he busy town of Newtownards once started as an old market town and it has certainly retained its reputation for excellent shopping, hosting an array of both independent and high street stores. When it comes to food, you will be spoilt for choice with an impressive range of vibrant cafes, delicious restaurants and thriving pubs. Just a short walk from the main hub of the town is the Ards Visitor Information Centre (VIC). This is the perfect first port of call, as it is jam-packed with in-depth information on local attractions and events. The centre also offers an extensive range of souvenirs and gifts to commemorate your visit to Newtownards. An outdoor attraction not to be missed is Scrabo Hill. Scrabo Hill, overlooking Newtownards town, was first occupied by people during the Bronze Age, between 2000 and 300BC. The re-mains of a late Bronze Age settlement can still be seen in the area currently occupied by Scrabo Golf Club. Standing tall on the horizon of Scrabo Hill is Scrabo Tower, overlooking the town below, built in 1857 it is one of Northern Ireland’s best-known landmarks. Visit Scrabo Country Park and follow one of the many walking trails through the beech woodlands of Killynether Wood. Scrabo Hill provides the perfect vantage point for a picturesque 360degree view across the beautiful Strangford Lough and the rolling countryside of Co Down, it’s certainly well worth the 10-minute climb to the site.

FOCUS ON

Newtownards Why I Love...

Newtownards Ulster Tatler speaks to Susan Nelson Teacher in Abbey Primary School.

How long have you been living/working in the Newtownards? I came to work in Newtownards in Abbey Primary School 28 years ago. My husband, son and I then moved to live in the town 3 years later. We’ve since has two other boys so they have all grown up living in Newtownards. What do you like most about Newtownards? I like the fact that Newtownards feels like a community: people know and genuinely care about each other. I’m a teacher in Abbey Primary School and it is such a special place; it’s like a family and I have really loved getting to know so many children and their parents over the years. Does Newtownards have any hidden gems? There are a few special places in the town. Cafolla’s gift shop on Frances Street is fantastic for lovely little bits and pieces, Roamer is a wonderful spot for a wee pamper and Haptik does the best brunch ever! I also love that Mounstewart is nearby and, with a lively dog, the floodgates are a perfect place for a walk. Where do you like to dine and socialise in the local area? As I’ve already said, I love Haptik for brunch; their savoury waffle stack is just divine. My husband and I also enjoy a meal in Tuk Tuk and Knotts is always great for a bun!
