Contents Welcome... to the second edition of Ulster Tatler – Newry Life! In this issue we chat to local business managers Eliza Hughes, Teresa Campbell, Karen McKee, Gemma Murphy and Paul Campbell, as well as Newry ambassador Nicole McAteer. They share what they love about living and working in the city. We also hear from local artist Louann Blair-Turner, whose work captures the story of her father’s experience of the D Day landings in World War II. Speaking of history, we visit the newly re-furbished Newry and Mourne Museum. We also explore local style in our feature ‘Street Smart’ and check out the latest home trends at Adrian Interiors. Last but not least, we take a look at the Newry women who designed a replica of Meghan Markle’s wedding look, less than 24 hours after the Royal Wedding! Enjoy the issue, and if you know of an event or story you think we should cover, feel free to get in touch.

Adding that sparkle to your life

Street Smart Newry Life

Newry Life hits the streets to check out what’s hot in the style stakes.

Aisling Rafferty, 36 Shop Owner. What brands are you wearing today? My top is from Traffic People, my jeans are Cream and my runners are from Mustang. Where do you like to shop? I rarely shop but when I do I love going to Cahill Bros on Hill Street and SM Shoes in Rathfriland. Do you shop in any of Newry’s boutiques? I buy a lot of things from my own shop, Berling. Who are your style icons? I like Victoria Beckham’s style for occasion wear. How would you describe your style? I go for casual and quirky items. I like being comfortable, and never go for items that are too ‘matchy’. There’s no fun in that!

Olivia Black, 26 Recruitment/HR Assistant. What brands are you wearing today? My whole outfit is from Next and my shoes are M&S. How would you describe your style? Quite girly and sometimes a little boho. Work-wise I go for trousers and heels. Who are your style icons? I like Gigi Hadid and Kate Moss. 14 UT Newry Life

What are your spring/summer must haves? White jeans – I could wear those all summer. And a pin strip blazer, because you always need a jacket in this country. I usually mix and match different t-shirts underneath. Do you have any fashion pet peeves? Just bad underwear! Foundation garments are the most important and it’s awful when you can see the lines from people’s underwear through clothes.

Newry Life

Leanne McGuinness, 21 Placement Student. What brands are you wearing today? A Zara dress and River Island shoes Where do you like to shop? I love Zara and Bows Boutique in Newry it’s good for tops and getting dresses for weddings. Who are your style icons? I follow Irish blogger Louise Cooney, I love her style. And Tiffany Brien as well.

Ceili Phillips, 20 Barista. What are your favourite stores to shop in? I mostly shop in vintage and second-hand shops, and flea markets. I usually go to vintage shops in Belfast or Dublin, and sometimes go to Topshop if I want to treat myself.

Colly McGivern, 46 Barber.

How would you describe your style? Comfortable and quirky.

Where do you like to shop? I like Louis Boyd here in Newry, and M2 in Banbridge. I shop in JD as well.

Who are your style icons? I don’t really have any. I just wear whatever I feel like. Sometimes that’s a super vintage look and sometimes more of a homeless look!

How would you describe your style? Very casual. When I’m on holiday I’ll go for shirts from Hackett. I like labels so my clothes are usually from different brands like that. Do you have any fashion pet peeves? I’m not a fan of matching tracksuits.

Do you have any fashion pet peeves? I hate when people tie their hoody at the back and tuck it up underneath. UT Newry Life 15

fter a three-month closure for renovations Newry and Mourne Museum has been re-opened to public, promising an exciting new place to discover Newry’s history. The museum, which had been closed from January to March, was officially re-opened by Councillor Roísín Mulgrew, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in April, following a major revamp of the galleries, corridors and displays. Since its move to Bagenal’s Castle in 2007, Newry and Mourne Museum has added some key historical items to its collection, many of which have never been displayed before. The redesign of the layout of the three main galleries now allows for an enriched visitor experience as these artefacts, which are important to the narrative of the area, are now on view for the first time. 18 UT Newry Life

Museum curator Noreen Cunningham welcomes guests to the re-opening of the museum.

The renovation works included the installation of five new museum cases, one of which exhibits items from an archaeological dig at Carnbane near Newry. There are also interactive displays for children, including a touch screen display and a spinner highlighting the history of the castle and McCann’s bakery. Newry Life: Why I Love

why i love newry... Teresa Campbell, Director of PKFFPM Accountants, is passionate about local community, business and education. She tells us what she loves about working in Newry.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? I graduated from Queen’s University, Belfast with a first class honours degree in accounting in 1996 after which I completed the postgraduate diploma in accounting at QUB. Having successfully completed a three-year training contract in Belfast with Goldblatt McGuigan, Chartered Accountants and my FAE exams, I qualified as a chartered accountant in September 2000. I was fortunate then to secure a position as assistant manager with PKF-FPM (formerly FPM) in late 2000. Following a secondment to industry in 2001, I have remained with PKF-FPM and was proud to be appointed the youngest female equity director in 2009. Currently, I hold the position as staff director. The practice has grown significantly since its establishment in 1991 by managing director Feargal McCormack, and we are particularly proud to be the 2017 Irish Accountancy Practice of the year along with the British Mid-Tier Accountancy Firm of the Year. HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TYPICAL WORKING DAY? No day is ever the same at PKFFPM. It is an exciting, fast paced environment focused on helping clients and colleagues succeed and achieve their dreams and lifestyle aspirations. We have been successful in building an exceptionally talented team and in my role as staff director I have the pleasure of spending a lot of time engaging with all staff and new recruits - coaching, inspiring and empowering ‘Team PKF-FPM’ to be the best that they can be. Watching staff grow and develop into exceptional practitioners and leaders is a major motivator for me and a highlight so far in 2018 was making it onto the Sunday Times Best 100 Companies to Work for in the whole of the UK. I continue to enjoy a number of client relationships – advising and working alongside my clients to help shape their business strategy and achieve the desired future direction for their business, supporting them to prosper and grow, with many clients now leading their own business sectors. How do you relax in your spare time? I enjoy being proactive in my local community and have a particular interest in education. For example, I am a member of the Governing Body of Southern Regional College and St Catherine’s College Armagh and am inspired by the outstanding work and commitment of the governors, teachers and parents in the vital role they play in shaping the future for our schools and pupils.

Newry Life: Why I Love

Newry, Co. Armagh.

As a member of St Vincent De Paul, I enjoy volunteering with the local conference and being part of their shops committee. With a busy work schedule it is humbling to witness the fantastic work so many volunteers give to our local community. Coming from a large family there’s nothing I enjoy more than gathering together and sharing life’s journey (big and small) with those I love. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT WORKING IN NEWRY? With PKF-FPM’s headquarters in Newry, I have spent a lot of time in the greater Newry area over the past 18 years. An unmissable factor of Newry is the real sense of community. And being located in the Quays, I have the benefit of easy access to the great shopping experience and fantastic restaurants Newry has to offer.

WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT NEWRY IN TERMS OF BUSINESS? PKF-FPM has six offices across two tax jurisdictions. Like many of our clients located in Newry we’re on the BelfastDublin economic corridor, which creates opportunities for our cross-border team to support our client base in terms of strategic opportunities, tax planning and business incentives. Particularly in this period of uncertainty with Brexit planning being a growing area of support for our clients. Newry has a great entrepreneurial spirit, evidenced in the growing success of the Greater Newry Business Awards. PKF-FPM were proud to be successful in these awards along with many of our clients. PKF-FPM Staff Director Teresa Campbell and Managing Director Feargal McCormack received the prestigious award on behalf of PKF-FPM Accountants. They were joined at the London Awards Ceremony by HR Manager Ciara McFerran and Caroline Preston, Business Development Manager.

The Sunday Times Top 100 Awards Accolade for PKF-FPM Leading island accountancy practice PKFFPM has scored another milestone success being placed in the UK’s prestigious Sunday Times Top 100 Best Small Companies to Work for 2018. Now in its 18th year, the ‘Best Companies To Work For’ celebrates the elite of Britain’s employers across four different categories: The 100 Best Companies, the 25 Best Big Companies, the 100 Best Small Companies and 100 Best Not-for Profit Organisations. Places in the rankings are determined by results measuring seven key areas including Leadership, Personal Growth, Team, and Giving Something Back alongside a review of pay, benefits and work-life balance. Ranked 64th in the small-sized business category, PKF-FPM attained the maximum three-stars accreditation for ‘extraordinary’ levels of engagement. Indeed PKF-FPM was the only independent Northern Ireland firm to be recognised in their category. On taking their place in this year’s Sunday Times Top 100 rankings, PKF-FPM founder and Managing Director, Feargal McCormack, stated that he was “humbled and overjoyed for the recognition of the collective PKFFPM team.” He added: “Our goal is to foster a culture that supports greatness, we strive to attract and retain the brightest and best and to inspire and develop the emerging leaders of tomorrow. PKF-FPM has been successful in managing talent and developing a strong client focused business team, to ensure excellence in service delivery at all levels.” A very excited Staff Director Teresa Campbell added: “Inclusion in The Sunday Times 2018 Top 100 Best Small Companies to work for in the UK, means that PKF-FPM Accountants has now been recognised and 26 UT Newry Life

acknowledged as an exemplar employer in a variety of national awards for the fourth successive year.” The Sunday Times Top 100 accolade, when combined with the recent successes at the British Accountancy Awards 2017 – Mid-

Tier Firm of the Year, Tax Team of the Year at the Irish Accountancy Awards 2018 and The Irish News Workplace and Employment Awards 2017 Managing Talent Award – provide PKF-FPM with the opportunity to celebrate a quadruple crown of significant wins in the past 12 months. In 2004 SPACE moved to 24 Monaghan Street, Newry to further its reach of providing support. In an effort to generate unrestricted income, SPACE opened Love Your Space charity shop which, over the years, provided employment and life skills training for young adults with additional needs. IRELAND’S LARGEST ACCOUNTANCY BODY ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT FROM NEWRY Feargal McCormack, Managing Director of PKF-FPM, has been elected President of Chartered Accountants Ireland at its 130th Annual General Meeting in Belfast. Addressing the Chartered Accountants Ireland AGM in Belfast, Mr McCormack highlighted current political and economic uncertainty, and expressed his view that delivering political stability is a vital factor in securing a positive economic future. He said: “At present the uncertainty around Brexit and the lack of a functioning Northern Ireland Executive are very challenging. Put plainly, businesses are unlikely to make significant investment decisions in an uncertain environment. This uncertainty is putting jobs, economic growth and prosperity at stake. “We must recognise that the one factor which will make the biggest contribution to the international competitiveness in Northern Ireland and on the island of Ireland is political stability. Stability should naturally incorporate an agreement on any Brexit arrangements going forward, given the evolution of the island economy and the land border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.” He continued: “Looking to the future, I am confident that Chartered Accountants Ireland will continue to be a progressive and outward-looking organisation, dynamically engaged with its many constituencies and driven by a vision, not just for itself, but for the community it serves.” Addressing his own objectives for his presidential year, Mr McCormack intimated that his overarching theme would be caring and people focused - in reality this would mean caring for members, staff, trainee students and the community. Mr McCormack, who takes over as President from Shauna Greely, is Managing Director of PKF-FPM, a Chartered Accountancy and business consultancy practice with offices in Newry, Belfast, Dungannon, Dundalk, Mallusk and Balbriggan, Dublin. A lifelong resident of Warrenpoint, Co. Down, Mr McCormack becomes the first Northern President of Chartered Accountants Ireland to come from outside of Belfast. Chartered Accountants Ireland represents 26,500 Chartered Accountants throughout the island of Ireland and in 93 countries around the globe. It is the largest, longest established and fastest growing professional accountancy body in Ireland. 28 UT Newry Life

Tidy Up and Make A Tidy Sum For Cancer Services Throughout the UK, charity shops divert 373,000 tonnes of clothing annually and with a store on Hill Street, Newry, Action Cancer can help with this environmental achievement. “Reusing unwanted furniture and clothing not only benefits the environment but also helps people save money on clothing and furnishing their homes and we’re committed to encouraging as much of it as possible,” says Peter Lynch from Action Cancer. “Items that are no longer wanted by one person will still hold a value for others so re-selling should be made as easy as possible,” Peter added. “By increasing rates of reuse not only can we reduce the quantity of bulky items going to landfill and incineration, we can also increase social value by boosting employment and providing affordable essentials like sofas to those on low incomes.” According to Peter reuse does not get nearly the same attention as recycling does and more should be done by local authorities to encourage the general public to reuse and donate to local charities. “With over 300,000 tonnes of furniture being cast aside every year we need to explore further the benefits of reusing existing items and how reuse can make savings to the public purse. “Action Cancer and other local charities offer the opportunity for the public to make donations of clothing and furniture and local councils should be giving more guidance to the public, as we have always promoted and encouraged reuse with our ‘Donate Don’t Dump” and ‘Tidy Up’ campaigns.” Making a fresh appeal for donations, Action Cancer, whose stores generate over £1,000,000 annually for the delivery of cancer services throughout Northern Ireland, benefit enormously from reuse. Operating clothing and furniture stores since 1975, reuse has always been a focal point when generating income for the local charity. Items of good quality can be recycled to raise funds to pay for cancer services. Practical help like this is every bit as important as a cash donation and Action Cancer can arrange collection of most large items. Anyone who wants to donate should contact 028 30 834932 or email newryshop@actioncancer.org in the Newry area.

Newry Life: Why I Love

why i love newry... Karen McKee, Managing Director at JR Lighting, discusses working in the family business and what she loves about Newry. What has been your career path to date? I studied accountancy at Ulster University, but quickly realised it wasn’t the career for me. It was inevitable that I’d come to work in JR Lighting. We joke that it’s like the fourth child in our family, as it was started by my father and mother, Ronnie and Edna McKee. I have two brothers, of which the younger, Ronnie, works with me in the business. I love working with him and together we bring a diverse set of skills to the company as he studied electrical engineering. Between us we have over 45 years of experience in the lighting and electrical industry. How do you spend a typical working day? Be in no doubt, every day starts with a strong coffee! Alongside JR Lighting, Ronnie and I own a second company, Magnalux, which wholesales lighting products and we are developing our own identity and exclusive lighting designs under this brand. We’re also currently developing Amplux Electrical, which is our electrical supplies part of the business, all while managing an online presence for JR Lighting (www.jrlighting.co.uk). So there’s a lot happening but I head up a great team of employees who help me bring all this together. That said, no task is too great or small for my attention.

Newry Life: Why I Love

Image: www.macscape-photography.com

How do you relax in your spare time? I have always been passionate about horse riding, I started riding when I was three years old! I have ridden internationally in the past, but nowadays it is very much a hobby and I only compete at safer levels. I also love to walk my little King Charles Spaniel with my two daughters and I enjoy going to the gym. What do you like most about living and working in Newry? I love the fact that Newry is a city with a country feel. People are friendly and I feel like I am part of a community. Many times I have customers say things to me like ‘I used to play football with your daddy’ or, ‘you look just like your mummy, is she still at the horses?’

It is also interesting to note that the second and third generation of the same families are coming in to buy lights from JR Lighting. Newry people have very much retained the ‘shop local’ ethos. What’s your favourite restaurant in Newry? We are blessed to have many excellent eateries in Newry and the greater Newry area. I couldn’t possibly single one out. We have supplied lighting and electrical supplies to many of them and I always make it my business to sample what they have to offer. I have yet to be disappointed.

What’s your favourite hidden gem in the town? Without a doubt, it is the walk along the Rampart Bank in Greenbank, which is close by my workplace. It is amazing to see the wildlife and beauty of the environment that we live in and it’s all happening so close to the city. Also, the new Greenway path to Victoria Lock has opened on the other side of the waterway, so that will surely be my next port of call with the dog.

NEWRY LIFE: Why I Love

why i love newry... From the scenery to the people, owner of The Wild Rose Boutique, Eliza Hughes, tells us why she loves Newry.

What has been your career path to date? Since relocating to Northern Ireland from Australia in 2009, I worked predominantly in the community sector in development and coordinator roles. I loved it, but a few years ago I felt I wanted to try something different career-wise. My husband suggested starting a new business and ladies’ formal wear was on the top of the ideas list, as my family back home is linked with the industry there. And that’s how The Wild Rose Boutique was born. How do you spend a typical working day? Being a mum of four my day starts with a huge mug of coffee (preferably warm) and a manic school run, usually returning home to slap on the makeup and then head into the shop for a 10am start. The rest of the day is a balancing act between helping my customers, liaising with suppliers, keeping the shop looking the part and managing our social media pages. And of course in the background there’s always the mum stuff – booking doctor’s appointments and ordering a Tesco click and collect! How do you relax in your spare time? My husband and I live very busy lives. We both run businesses so it’s difficult to find spare time from Monday to Friday. So on the weekends we like to spend quality time with our kids and with each other. We love getting out and about with the kids, taking them on trips to local parks and further afield to places like St. George’s Market and W5. Our caravan is our latest family interest so when the weather’s good we head away for weekends in ‘the van’. The kids love it, but my husband and I aren’t sure if we’re caravan people yet - we’re still on the fence! What do you like most about living and working in Newry? Newry and Mourne is made up of beautiful scenery, great shopping and quality restaurants, but I love Newry mostly because it’s full of the best people in the world. I have found Newry people to be the most welcoming and kind. I feel blessed that I landed on my feet living and working here.

44 UT Newry Life

NEWRY LIFE: Why I Love

What’s your favourite restaurant in Newry? We love Courtneys steakhouse. Best steak I’ve ever had, but you have to order the fillet! If we’re heading out for a bite with the kids, then it’s got to be Sapori Italiani. It has such a relaxed atmosphere for children. What’s your favourite hidden gem in the town? The Newry scenery is second to none, especially the drive from Newry to Kilkeel through Warrenpoint and Rostrevor. I really enjoy trips to Kilbroney Park with the kids and every time I take that drive out there I am astonished at the amazing views of Carlingford Lough. On a good day it’s absolutely breath taking! How would you describe Newry in a few words? Great shopping and food, and the most welcoming people!

Street Smart Newry Life

Newry Life hits the streets to check out what’s hot in the style stakes.

Kirsty Reavey, 25 Barber. What brands are you wearing today? Mostly Primark and my shoes are Adidas. Where do you like to shop? I love Primark, or anywhere that has a sale. As soon as I see those red signs I’m there. How would you describe your style? I’d say it’s versatile. It depends on my mood. What are your spring/summer must haves? Jelly shoes. I have a little girl and I bought us matching jelly shoes from Primark recently. They were just £3! Who are your style icons? I follow the girls from The Only Way is Essex online, like Lydia Bright, I love her style. And I usually take some inspiration from what the mannequins are wearing in shop windows. Do you have any fashion pet peeves? I’m really not into the tracksuits with heels look. Some people wear that, and it’s great that people are daring, but it’s not for me. 48 UT Newry Life

Jenny McErlean, 23, Graduate Recruitment Assistant. What brands are you wearing today? Villa, H&M and Next. What are your favourite stores to shop in? I really like H&M, especially for work clothes. And I love Rose and Poetry in Lisburn. How would you describe your style? I like dresses and blazers. A good blazer is great for structure. What are your spring/summer must haves? I love the idea of pleated skirts and white plimsoles. Work clothes are so navy and black, so different from nice summer looks. Who are your style icons? Olivia Palermo although I don’t really dress like her. Do you have any fashion pet peeves? I’m not a fan of those clear Perspex shoes.

Newry Spotlight

Louann Blair-Turner’s work tells the story of her father’s experience during World War II. The Rathfriland artist tells us about her recent exhibitions in Newry and where she finds her inspiration. Tell us how you got into art and design. I got into art after completing a counselling course at Southern Regional College (SRC) in Newry. My initial thoughts were to use art alongside my counselling for art therapy. It was quite funny how it came about. I spotted the advert for the art and design course, but it was on the closing date. I phoned to make enquires and was told to come in that day with a portfolio. With my heart in my mouth I was met by a lecturer, and was accepted straight away! I went to my first class that very day in a state of shock. Your display at SRC’s Newry campus last year paid homage to your father. Tell us a bit about his story. The subject of my art course was ‘The Journey of Life’. Initially I started with the poppy and this lead me to research the origins of the 50 UT Newry Life

poppy, which filter into World War II. My father, Neville Henshaw, was a sergeant in the Royal Corps of Signals. He was a conscript from Liverpool, and was of Irish descent though he was born in Africa to missionary parents. He was a wireless operator during the war, fluent in German and French, and was there on the D Day landings on Gold Beach. Through my display ‘Operation Over Lord’, I wanted to convey the human story of a soldier faced with the onslaught of war they endured for the liberation of the oppressed and the freedom that we hold today. How was his story conveyed in your work? I made a collage of mixed media: old photos, fine art, textiles, graphics, propaganda posters, my poem, letters and prints. I also made ceramic bombshells, used sand to

Look out for Neville Henshaw’s book Five Uniforms, released this summer.

Conscript Youth Lost I am conscript fresh faced ten years and seven, eager youth full of vigour. I want to chase the local honeys, knock back a pint or two with my mates, hailing from iconic “pool of life”… Under mercury swift and sure I am proficient, trained, obedient to my country’s call, fit for battle, enduring war, my unit sent May 1944, Gosport strutted in secret descent, operation “Overlord” Hey lads where are we going now? simulate Gold Beach and incorporated music. My work was picked for the festival of windows and displayed in Cahill Shoe Shop Newry and Newry Arts centre. What did you like most about studying in Newry? I loved learning new creative skills that challenged my creativity and enjoyed the craic with my contemporaries. The lecturers were very attentive and SRC even have made a poster of my achievements. What’s your favourite hidden gem in Newry or the surrounding area? My favourite gem is the Fairy Glen in the beautiful Rostrevor. I love to walk there with my Afghan hounds and let my imagination run free...

The veil is lifted, eerie silence befalls us, skyline exploded blazed with reddish black, orange hues. Normandy beckons battle cry, overwhelming, deafening noise, I stumble, wade heavy bare anchored aimless down. Enveloped by unforgiving sea, hauled out of the water by a comrade in arms still clutching my rifle, my feet weighed heavy like ploughing farrows underfoot. Golden sand inviting no-one, bloody red, three of my mates lay strewn dead. Terrified, shaken rabbit stare uttering Lords prayer gasping thoughts cloaked with parents love and blessings. Officer yells “keep moving soldier” hunting me, driving me on riffle cocked, shell explosion shrapnel pierce my skin like unyielding sabre, smell flesh burning, fuel pumped forward going, German fortification, relentless fire spewing like dragon, I evade clambering up into the abyss still earth bound a job to do, linesman fluent in French and German, communicate this, grateful to be alive!!!! A Creation Truly Fit for Royalty The flawless replica of Meghan Markle’s wedding look. Find out how Newry women recreated the style within 24 hours of the Royal Wedding.

“The elegant flowers and arch were beautifully created by Martina Crilly at Creative Designs

54 UT Newry Life

A

s soon as Meghan Markle stepped out of the car at Windsor Castle on Saturday 19th May, designers around the world began the race to recreate her wedding gown. Among them, was local designer Shauna Fay. She took on the task of recreating Meghan Markle’s wedding look in 24 hours – and she did exactly that! Within just 22 hours, Shauna had created a replica version of the Duchess of Sussex’s wedding look with not just one, but two wedding dresses. The first gown mimiced Meghan’s ceremony gown, with its minimalist pure white design, featuring a boat neck with three-quarter length sleeves, and a sophisticated fitand-flare silhouette finish. Sharon, at Elody Bride Newry, then took on the mammoth task of creating the veil. In order to do this, she cut out each individual lace piece and sewed it to the veil to create a stunning piece the same length as the one worn by the newest member of the Royal family.

She then created the second dress that Meghan wore to her evening reception in just three hours! The attention to detail from both Shauna and Sharon was astounding, as you can hardly tell the difference between the original and the replicas.

As everyone knows, every princess needs a tiara and this was designed and made by the creative Donna Mackin Millinery. The centrepiece was a 5.00 Carat E colour diamond worth

£50,000 from Jack Murphy Jewellers, who also provided the diamond earrings, three-stone engagement ring, wedding band and the diamond bracelet to mimic Meghan’s chic accessories on her big day. The elegant flowers and arch were beautifully created by Martina Crilly at Creative Designs, and the models’ hair was kept classic and elegant by Suzanne Strain-Wilshaw, from Chocolate Blonde Hair Couture. The natural dewy makeup was perfected by Rosemary Wright, and the entire look was captured by the amazing photographer, Rashida Keenan, with model Cleo Parkinson who absolutely stole the show! What’s most amazing about the project, is that each of the ladies who helped create something spectacular are all local successful business women of the Newry and Mourne area. They’re all doing their own things on a daily basis, running their own businesses and managing teams – so it is amazing that they all came alongside each other to create something they’ll never forget and to empower women to come together! Newry spotlight Paul Campbell, BATHLINE manager at Haldane Fisher, tells us about the business, their exciting new bathroom showrooms and what he likes about working in Newry. Tell us a bit about your business. Haldane Fisher is one of the leading independent suppliers to the construction industry in the UK and Ireland, serving both trade customers and the general public. We’re part of the Haldane Shiells Group, made up of Haldane Fisher NI, Haldane Fisher Isle of Man, and GE Robinson in England bringing the total number of branches within the group to eighteen. The business has grown organically and through acquisition since it was founded by Bob Haldane in 1946, but it still retains the high levels of personal service one would associate with a family run business. We are predominantly a chain of builders and plumbers merchants supplying a huge range of products – everything from building materials to plumbing and heating, home improvement products to internal finish such as kitchens, bathrooms, doors and floors. The

group imports timber and timber products, and is a leading manufacturer of machined timber as well as engineered roofing and flooring solutions in Ireland. Tell us about the Newry branch – what services do you have and what do you supply there? Newry is our largest branch and also operates as Head Office. We have a 14 acre site in Carnbane with loads of customer parking spaces! Here we have the full builder’s merchant offering plus a wide range of more retail products including doors, floors, AGA cookers, stoves, gardening equipment, paints and preservatives, Weber BBQs and lots more. Plus our dedicated plumbing and heating offering, Plumbmaster. And, not forgetting, our recently launched BATHLINE. Tell us more about BATHLINE. BATHLINE is the new name for bathroom

showrooms at Haldane Fisher but they have been given a much more retail friendly look. We found a lot of people still considered us a builders merchant, which we are, but when you enter a BATHLINE showroom you will find them inspirational and calm environments with friendly staff with a wide range of products to suit all budgets, supported by the latest 3D and 4D design software. We have showrooms in Newry, Bangor, Portadown, Lisburn, Belfast (on Ladas Drive) and Coleraine with more to come! How did you get into the business? Well, after 20 years in retail, managing department stores and then moving to sports retail, I fancied a change. My dad was a joiner so I was always in Haldane Fisher or waiting in vans as he ran in to get supplies when I was younger in the summer holidays. I became aware that the position of Showroom Manager in Newry was advertised and thought I could bring some of my retail experience into the industry. That was nearly two years ago and I have not looked back since. What do you like about working in Newry? I like how busy it is and dealing with the customers, be that the young couple building their new home or the experienced plumber picking up a few things for his next job. I am from Camlough originally, so I know a lot of the customers and plumbers and enjoy the craic with them and get a great sense of achievement when a customer sends in a picture of their new bathroom! PhiBrows: the Latest Technology in Eyebrow Beauty

P

hiBrows is the latest eyebrow trend to sweep Northern Ireland, and is the fastest growing global brand in eyebrow shaping. It’s the latest and most specific technique to shape your face and correct aesthetic problems in the eyebrow area. Celebrities whose faces are in the media constantly have also been at the forefront of the trend. Pippa O’Connor, Michelle Keegan, Jennifer Lopez and Gwen Stefani are just a few who have opted for PhiBrows for their brow beauty routine. But why? What makes PhiBrows so unique? PhiBrows is a manual, semi-permeant technique of hyper realistic eyebrow drawing, in which the shape of the eyebrow is calculated according to your face dimensions – it’s really a science of the eyebrow! What’s also so

reassuring about this technique, is it can only be performed by a fully trained and equipped PhiBrow Artist. Joanne Woods from Joanne Woods Beauty Specialists in Dundalk, Co. Louth, is the highest ranking and only Royal PhiBrow Artist in Northern Ireland. Her status and reputation grabbed the attention of the team at the exclusive Galgorm Resort and Spa, who recently invited Pippa O’Connor to also host a night of fashion and beauty. They nabbed Joanne for the evening to educate the well-heeled ladies of Ballymena and surrounding areas about the benefits of PhiBrow. And what a night it was. So much so Joanne has been invited back to the Galgorm several times for PhiBrow bookings and clinics. She has also been invited back to host another evening. Joanne is also a high profile supplier on weddings.ie, and being so high in demand means it can be hard to get appointments. So don’t delay in securing your spot. why i love newry... Newry Life: Why I Love

What has been your career path to date? I studied sociology in Queen’s University and worked in a number of local retailers during this time. Once I graduated I knew that I wanted to work in Newry and was lucky enough to join the Newry Business Improvement District team just as local businesses voted ‘yes’ to Newry city becoming a BID area. Everyday is different and I love working on projects and getting local people, businesses and visitors involved to help profile and improve Newry city. I work with a great team and I am committed to improve myself and further my career.

Newry BID’s Nicole McAteer is an ambassador for the city. When she’s not meeting visitors and working with local businesses, she’s enjoying Newry’s shops, restaurants and leisure spots. Here’s what she loves most about the city. 60 UT Newry Life

How do you spend a typical working day? Every day is different, from organising training and events for our members to being out on the street as Newry’s ambassador. My role as ambassador is fantastic as it allows me to be the liaison for local businesses to hear direct from them of any concerns and issues, so as a team we can help fix them. I also love meeting visitors to the area and

answering any questions they may have, from how to get to the local museum or where they can get a great cup of tea and a sweet treat after all their shopping. As I am in the city centre every day, I also report on environmental issues and any anti-social behaviour and liaise with the correct teams to get these fixed. How do you relax in your spare time? I love keeping fit, and we are very lucky in Newry to have the Newry Leisure Centre which recently opened a brandnew state of the art gym, to add to the

swimming pool complex. I love attending spin or body pump classes there. I love being outdoors too and again we are so lucky to have so many beautiful places at our door step, including Carlingford Lough and the Mourne Mountains. I can’t forget to include shopping! With the two major shopping centres, The Buttercrane and The Quays, plus lots of independent boutiques such as Berling and Cahill Brothers I am spoilt for choice. What do you like most about living and working in Newry? I like the way you are in walking distance to everything whether it be a restaurant, café, bar, the two shopping centres or the independent retailers. It’s handy to get around and this makes living and working in Newry more enjoyable. There is a huge variety of places to eat in Newry with a wide range from fast food to grills, delicatessens, vegetarian friendly options, Italian, Chinese and Indian – there is definitely something for everyone. What’s your favourite restaurant in Newry? My favourite restaurant in Newry is Courtney’s Steakhouse on The Mall. It is one of the newer restaurants, but already has been nominated for a number of awards, and there’s no doubt why. The steaks are incredible and it has a lovely relaxed atmosphere with amazing staff. What’s your favourite hidden gem in the town? My favourite hidden gem would be the Tin House Coffee Shop at Kingsway Arcade just off Monaghan Street. This coffee shop is very unique and quirky with friendly staff. The food and coffee are great and the shop has a nice atmosphere. UT Newry Life 61
