Holywood

Holywood is one of Northern Ireland’s most vibrant towns, boasting stunning seaside views and a bustling business community. On the high street you will find a range of local shops, cafés and restaurants to fit all your needs. The town is well known for its historic Maypole, which has stood in the middle of Holywood for 400 years and is the only Maypole in Ireland. If you are out and about in Holywood you may also spot the ‘Johnny the Jig’ statue, which was gifted to the town by local sculptress Sophia Rosamond Praeger in 1953.

Late | Thurs - Sat : 17:00 - 21:00 Brunch | Mon - Sun : 08:00 - 16:00 How long have you lived in Holywood?

All of my life… born and bred.

What do you like most about living in Holywood?

There are so many reasons to love living in Holywood, but the thing I love most is the people. No matter where you go there is a warm welcome with a smile.

Holywood is filled with hustle and bustle and has a vibrant city vibe in a small coastal town. We have an airport on our doorstep, fabulous cafes, sports pitches used by schools and local clubs, the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum and some of the best pubs and restaurants about.

Does Holywood have any hidden gems?

Holywood is known for its gorgeous coastal path, but there are many other places to explore - The Motte and Twistle Bridge to name a few. Holywood’s biggest hidden gem is in Redburn Country Park, where Redburn House used to be. The famous Dunville family lived here during the peak of their whiskey empire, the grounds are huge, it is covered in history, and you even get a glimpse of their abandoned zoo.

Where do you like to dine and socialise in the area?

We are spoilt for choice for hospitality in Holywood. I manage a dog friendly restaurant called Joxer on Church Road. We offer brunch, lunch and dinner with speciality coffee and delicious cocktails. Other favourites of mine in Holywood are The Dirty Duck for a drink with friends and beautiful view, Ned’s for the best pint of Guinness in NI, and Noble for award-winning food. There is something in Holywood for everyone.

HOLYWOOD’S FAMOUS SON

Hailing from Holywood, Rory McIlroy became the 39th player in PGA Tour history to reach 20 career victories after winning the CJ Cup in Las Vegas last month, and also boasts eight international victories in his golfing career. During his career, Rory also spent 100 weeks as world number in Official World Golf Ranking and gained an MBE in 2012 for recognition of his skill and success.

Why I Love

Holywood Q&A

Ulster Tatler speaks to Nikki McConnell of Worthington Solicitors.

How long have you been living in Holywood?

22 years. I was fortunate to meet my now husband just after he bought his first house on Downshire Road – just a coincidence, obviously, but it felt like I was moving back home, as my dad grew up here.

What do you like most about Holywood?

The people. Holywood has a village soul and a genuinely inclusive, welcoming attitude. I missed our historic maypole, after it was removed in February 2021 due to storm damage. It was wonderful to see the replacement pole being erected last week and the children are looking forward to the May Day maypole dancing next year.

Does Holywood have any hidden gems?

If I am allowed to nominate people, Pamela Henderson, the Guide leader and Garry the barber are certainly Holywood gems! Also, when the coastal path was mobbed by walkers over lockdown, we discovered glorious paths up in the hills behind Holywood, with stunning views over Belfast lough. I enjoy a beautiful commute over the hills to my office in Newtownards every day.

Where do you like to dine and socialise in the local area?

We are totally spoilt for choice – The Bay Tree is hard to beat, and I have to thank them for introducing me to the joys of white Rioja at one of their wine tasting evenings. It is also fantastic to see Noble doing so well. Guilt Trip donuts are also very popular in our house and a box of six never lasts long.
