AUTUMN/WINTER 21 HARVEY NORMAN HOMEWARES For Autumn/Winter 2021, Harvey Norman have taken a simple approach: ‘CLARITY’. After all, it’s been a fuzzy forgettable last year and they want to offer the customer easy options in understanding what is both on trend and worth investing in in the future. Trying to make your home work your way is going to be an ongoing project but if one thing is clear this year will end with us being TOGETHER again. Celebrating and showcasing your beautiful homes is where it’s at for now. Two major growing trends for Harvey Norman are ‘Grandmillennial’ and ‘Cottagecore’ Grandmillennial Simply a style of mixing what appears to be retro elements with Modern day pieces. It’s brave and might have been referred to as Maximalist in previous seasons but moving forward is more thoughtful. Comfort is central; the ‘chesterfield’ like sofa is deep seated, high armed and more importantly available now. It feels and looks vintage the colours are decadent, rich and mixed with velvet digital jungle like prints. It’s about giving a fresh take on things we’ve known all our lives ; items that may have been seen as fauxpas are now bang on trend but it’s all about mixing and being brave with colour.

Cottagecore This is built on all of our true commitment to changing how we live today for the better. Taking more responsibility about how we treat the earth we live on. After the events of 2020 we have been left feeling nostalgic and the need for comfort is strongly expressed in interior trends. We can see the influence of nature taking a precedence. Taking time remains important and focus even more so as we navigate our way to a new way of living post pandemic. The palettes are surprisingly fresh and floral for Autumn/ Winter but we also see a warming up and a move away from grey to warmer tones. We see newness in bedroom linen designs; cotton being more important to us than blends and sustainability key. Everything we need for a bright new future.

UNDERSTATED LUXURY – NO NEED TO SHOUT INTERIOR PROJECT BY ANNAN INTERIORS

32 |

T

here is no doubting that recent times has given huge focus to the home with our re-evaluation

of it’s contribution to our quality of life. For some, home and workplace have become one, for others our place of refuge must be how we want it to be or perhaps more exciting – well on it’s way to being how we want it to be. Because it’s an expression of our personalities this is where we can relax and gather strength for the challenges of tomorrow and it is this desire for spiritual calm and simplicity in the interior environment that has long been one of the principal driving forces in the work of Annan Interiors. The owners of this Fermanagh Home considered an impending move or extend, but after realising a well resolved extension would meet their needs they appointed Annan Interiors at a very early stage to work along with local architect Graham Irvine. This earliest involvement optimises results, as lighting design, liaison with kitchen supplier, sanitary ware supplier and detailing all contribute to a higher level of control over the outcome. However this journey requires a lot of commitment throughout by the client with it’s beginnings of consulting with an Interior Designer to clarify objectives and lifestyle aspirations. The ubiquitous open plan livingdining-kitchen is only successful if there is a flow where the scale of furniture in each of the areas has been meticulously planned and that was a priority here. The outlook aspect onto a nearby wood, the focal point of a fire and TV viewing were all factors forming the crucial early space plan. This was followed by a lighting design which included integral lighting within shelving units, concealed LED lighting strips to a rooflight and kitchen

shelving, floor and table lamp positions as well as the inevitable separate circuits of downlights and ceiling lights within living-dining-kitchen. The effect of these separate and dimmable circuits provides immediate moodsetting for dining and living areas for different times of day or use and crucially a kitchen area which is gently lit when not in use providing a pleasant backdrop to living. Some Flos lighting classic pendant designs highlight these areas. McGovern Kitchens listened well to the client and Interior Designer and were completely in tune with the simple understated ethos nicely punctuating the handleless white kitchen with oak back panel on the rear wall and kneehole at the breakfast part of the Quartz clad island. Getting a Main Contractor who is engaged with and appreciative of the detail can make all the difference and thankfully this was the case with Roland Hurst who demonstrated excellent project management throughout. Although only a ground floor extension the triple glazed Rationel windows availed of the 2.8 m ceiling height in the living area. This included a big sliding door leading from the dining area out to a newly formed patio with defining low stepped walls and raised planter beds all giving opportunity to have some fun with exterior lighting design. Under-floor heating was a big addition and the work extended it beyond the actual extension right from the front door so it was an easy decision to choose the same continuous Porcelain floor tile throughout. The choice of what tile and of course other tile choices in the home however meant several sessions at David Scott Tiles who provided very good technical guidance along the way. The decision for what exterior patio tile became more of “why not the same tile” and just the size of the bush-hammered anthracite

The suspended Nordpeis stove from Mullen Domestic is a conversation piece flanked by in-ground uplights and complemented by the Peter Maly designed log holder and fire tong set. Amidst the Alabaster white walls and anthracite floor the eye is arrested by the natural oak of not just the interior doors but by the Wishbone dining chairs and Shell recliner chair originally produced by Carl Hansen. The Scandinavian look of white with natural wood is further enhanced by the white dining table top all providing a casual dining environment just off the kitchen with plenty of natural light. Silent Gliss electric roller blinds were the only solution for window furnishing that were commensurate with the modernity and quality of the interior. The chosen ‘screen’ fabric with one way viewing out only in daytime added another dimension to the aspect.

"Under-floor heating was a big addition and the work extended it beyond the actual extension right from the front door so it was an easy decision to choose the same continuous Porcelain floor tile throughout." Glass Mosaic iridescent floor and wall tiles provide a wow factor for any user of the ground floor toilet with brushed nickel brassware and accessories - the client and designers having accessed Beggs & Partners top quality offerings in sanitary ware throughout the house. In that first impressions are crucial the comparatively small space of the front door entrance porch has been dramatized by the use of Tektura Edo wallcovering with just a colour nod to the natural oak doors beyond. The experience of something different is continued with the hall and stairwell by use of the Fusion staircase system, circular Kymo rug and marble console table. In the bathroom an in-floor LED strip uplight behind, presents the free-standing bath perfectly against the Material stone broken bond strip cut tiles. A simple wall-hung basin with storage drawer and dimmable mirror with cosmetic mirror all complete the scene for bath time. The main bedroom features a 180 cm wide Interlübke upholstered bed and Foscarini table lamps only showing a little colour accent to make the required statement. The Fermanagh home featured here shows that conscientiously taking the time to do things differently is a philosophy. With a background of form follows function the interior design has made no apologies for not indulging in transient trends or high fashion but rather has created a nicely crafted blend of aesthetics with function. Trevor Wilson is Managing Director of Beaufort Interiors – known both for its team of interior designers, and for its in-house soft-furnishing manufacturing. Originally forging a career in the NHS as a psychologist, Dr Wilson came in to the family business in 2005, re-trained in Interior Design at the National Design Academy in Nottingham, and since then has made his own impression on the interior design industry. He is now an associate of the British Institute of Interior Designers, and a member of the Irish Interiors Association. He has been interviewed in live radio broadcasts discussing current design trends, and television programmes, including a couple of appearances on the interior design challenge Showhouse on RTE 1. For London Design Week 2016, Trevor launched his own soft furnishing range, and was listed as one of the Top Ten interior product launches from the 300 brands represented. “The BEAUFORT Collection” comprises a range of sofas, armchairs, side chairs, rugs and fabrics, and now has its own showroom in the prestigious Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. Beaufort is well established in residential interiors, and Trevor began branching into commercial contracts, which are now a major part of Beaufort’s sphere of activity. In fact, Beaufort has been involved with a number of projects abroad, including work for both Royal Caribbean and SAGA cruises, 10 Trinity Square in London, and most recently, a large VIP private residence in central Paris. Although involved in commercial interiors and work abroad as far afield as Saudi Arabia, what gives Trevor more

satisfaction than anything else is to get to know what his residential clients really want for their interior, and to realise that for them. He prefers to use the term facilitation to describe how he helps his clients express their own style, so that their home shows off their taste - through the proposing of design concepts that they may not have considered, whilst providing enough choice that the project belongs to the homeowner. Beaufort was founded in 1981 by Trevor’s mother Ruth Wilson, and is the only company to be awarded the Ulster Tatler’s ‘Interior Designer / Interiors Store of the Year’ twice (2008 & 2013). Beaufort has been manufacturing made-tomeasure curtains and blinds, together with other custom soft furnishings for almost 40 years, and is a member of the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers.

Seaforde Interiors Dunnanew Road, Downpatrick BT30 T: 07740304310 E: jacqueline@ seafordeinteriors.co.uk www.seafordeinteriors.co.uk/

Jacqueline Hamilton from Seaforde Interiors has had a lot to celebrate recently having been shortlisted for our Interior Designer of the year award. “I was absolutely delighted to reach the final and be shortlisted, it was such a wonderful acknowledgement and I am so proud to have come this far.” Jacqueline’s feet haven’t touched the ground since she returned home from London after a career in postproduction along with her husband Tony. They built their own beautiful home in the gorgeous village of Seaforde, Co. Down to bring up their children now both teenagers Rudi & Daisy. Jacqueline completed her Fine Art Degree in England and when she moved back to Northern Ireland she then re-trained in Interior Design. “Having built our own home and constantly doing DIY with Tony over the years, I knew that it was something that I wanted to pursue as a career. With my background in art I knew about colour etc but I definitely needed to go back to college to do my interiors if I wanted to understand about design properly.” Seaforde Interiors was then launched five years ago and it has gone from strength to strength with two restaurants, bars, hotels, offices and family homes under her belt. Although based in Seaforde, Jacqueline works all over Northern Ireland. She has also done

virtual consultations however she believes that nothing beats visiting the premises as you are able to get an over all feel from it immediately. “It’s also better to look at paint colours and fabrics in the room that they are intended for as the light varies from room to room and what may look nice in one room may not work so well in another.” Seaforde Interiors offer a full bespoke service such as curtains, roman blinds, paint colours, sourcing furniture and of course design. “It can be very overwhelming for someone trying to do one room or a whole house, or perhaps they just don’t have the time. That’s where we come in and take the stress away and are able to complete the project and give them exactly what they want.”

Ultimate Interior Design was founded in 2013 by Jennifer McCreesh, a graduate from the University of Ulster, Art College, Belfast, and the British Interior Design Academy. Our company ethos is “Defining Interiors with Vision Led Design”. Our aim is to meet and exceed all interior design expectations of our clients. Our company provides a full bespoke interior design service tailored specifically for each client. Although we favour a sleek contemporary style, we do not push this style upon our clients. Each home is different, and it is imperative that we design and create rooms that fit with the homes’ style as well as the clients tastes and budget. We are flexible and are led by our clients’ requirements. In some instances, our clients require us to undertake projects from start to finish without any input in the design and execution of a project. This affords us the opportunity to showcase our contemporary style using our extensive fabrics, interior accessories, and furniture products. What sets our company apart from other Interior Designers is that Jennifer has over 15 years’ experience within the construction industry. Having inside construction knowledge helps alleviate many interior design issues from the start. This benefits especially those undertaking a new build project, and those re-furbishing their home or commercial spaces. Jennifer’s keen eye for detail ensures all work

and materials used are of the highest standard and quality, whether it be in the construction stage, fit-out or final stage. Ultimate Interior Design initially commenced trading as an interior consultation service and has steadily grown and evolved to become a purveyor of an extensive range of fabrics, trimmings, curtains poles, wallpapers, carpets, flooring, furniture, and lighting. We have trade accounts with all our suppliers so that we can offer our clients the most competitive price for products and services required for their project. Our services are as follows: • Home & Studio Consultation Service • On-Site Surveyin, Measuring, Quantity Surveying • Full Project Management, New Build, Renovation, Restoration, Re-furbishment • Residential & Commercial Interiors • Showhouse Creation • Computerised Imaging • AutoCAD Generated Drawings • Experienced team of tradespersons, Curtain Specialist - Plaster Coving Specialist, Joinery, Decorators, Electrical Contractor, Heating Contractor, Fitters, but to name a few. • Purveyor of Fabrics – Curtain Poles & Tracks, Tiebacks, Trims & Braids, Wallpapers, Carpets, Flooring, Work Surfaces, Bed Linen, Furniture, Lighting and Interior Accessories.

THE LATEST INNOVATION FROM QUOOKER

The CUBE is installed in the kitchen cabinet next to the Quooker tank and can be added to any compatible Quooker system. The tap that does it all offers all the familiar advantages of a Quooker. “The average household consumes a whopping 360 plastic bottles a year and people are looking to reduce their waste of single-use plastics which makes drinking good tap water that doesn’t need to be stored more appealing. With the Cold Water Filter and a sparkling water option with the addition of the CUBE, these accessories enable any tap in the Quooker range to deliver quality drinking water, reducing the need for single-use plastics. Since they were launched, 70% of customers on average now take the Cold Water Filter or CUBE options, proving the demand is there. In recent years this marked rise has been largely propelled by the drive for sustainability,” says Stephen Johnson, Managing Director at Quooker UK. How do I operate the CUBE? Push-wait-turn and the tap ring will light up blue for a flow of filtered chilled water. Push-turn and the tap ring will flash blue for a flow of filtered sparkling water. So it’s impossible to dispense boiling water when you want sparkling water. Do I need an extra tap for the chilled sparkling and filtered water? No, the filtered chilled and sparkling water comes from the same tap as the boiling water. So you save space on your kitchen counter and you don’t need to drill any extra holes. Can the CUBE be integrated into a Quooker system that has already been installed? The CUBE will work with any systems produced after October 2017. These taps have serial numbers beginning with QW1 or QW0. The tanks have serial numbers beginning with VCW or CCW.

INTERIORS

What is filtered by the CUBE? The CUBE is equipped with an active carbon filter and a hollow fibre filter. Both filters together ensure a better water quality because they filter bacteria, chloride, chemicals and pesticides from the water. How long do the filters last? For hygienic reasons, the filters should be replaced every 12 months, regardless of the amount of water used. After 12 months, the CUBE will start beeping and the light on the CUBE tank will flash to indicate that the filters need to be replaced. The filters can be accessed under the sliding panel on top of the CUBE. Instructions for replacing the filters are printed on the filter cartridges. How sustainable is the CUBE? There is no more need for plastic bottles and you won’t have to throw away used bottles of water because they’ve been open for too long and have gone flat. With the CUBE, you dispense precisely the amount that you need at a given moment. And there is a saving for society too. It will no longer be necessary to transport plastic bottles by lorry. Why does the water from the CUBE taste so good? The CUBE is fitted with an active carbon filter and a hollow fibre filter. They filter bacteria, chloride, chemicals and pesticides from the water.

‘A MODERN CLASSIC’ This was the main focus of the design proposal and one of the key points of the design brief that took place at Robinson Interiors showroom in late 2019. The overall cabinetry configuration should perfectly embody form and function, aesthetics and everyday hard working kitchen credentials. “The extra ordinary ceiling height of this exceptional house allowed our designer Jim Rapanos to propose a grand kitchen scheme with extra tall cabinets, extensive natural quartzite stone cladding and minimal – if any – use of more common & standardized kitchen features.” The line up of the high-specification in-frame cabinetry and simple, crisp, clean lines, has highlighted the room’s architectural lines and has created a really striking flow to the beautifully landscaped garden. The design process was an easy one; the customers were always open to suggestions and readily available to helping take the initial design concept to its mature stage of a finalised proposal ready to be installed. The couple’s interior architect Lee Austin who Robinson Interiors collaborated with on this project provided valuable input during the entire process, building on the excellent working relationship between all parties involved. Coming to the specification of the kitchen, there is an abundance of storage with fully accessorised tall larders, extra wide drawers, top boxes, and an extremely elegant and functional walk-in pantry behind ribbed glass sliding doors. The appliance line-up features the new high-end Siemens studioline ovens and coffee machine, while the Bora induction hob / extractor was chosen for its excellent cooking qualities and to maximise the views toward the garden - being able to chat to family and friends while cooking being a mandatory requirement! The kitchen and walk in pantry are also complemented by a large functional utility that doubles as an auxiliary kitchen, complete with a wine chiller, small induction hob, extractor and sink. To book a design brief and start your kitchen project you can find Robinson Interiors at 10 Boucher Way, BT12 6RE, Belfast. www.robinsoninteriors.com

GLEN WRIGHT

WRIGHTS DESIGN HOUSE From humble beginnings 50 years ago to the successful kitchen design house it is today, which decade saw the biggest change for what is now Wrights Design house? We have seen a lot of change over our five decades in business, but it is the last decade that has seen the most. In the last fifteen years we have evolved from a highly respected local company to one of the most acclaimed kitchen companies throughout Ireland and the UK. Having managed the company since 2001, I took the strategic decision in 2008 to relocate our retail showroom to its current location at Temple Cross, Lisburn. It was at this time that we also commissioned a major rebrand, changing from be-right kitchens, to Wrights Design House. In the years since then we have doubled our staff numbers and extended our manufacturing facility to cope with the increased volume of work. We now undertake major projects throughout Ireland and the UK, and continue to push the boundaries of design and quality of product. Who has been your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspiration is without a doubt my father, David Wright. He started the business over 50 years ago and has always maintained loyalty to customers and suppliers, while striving to produce the best possible product for every client. He is held in high esteem throughout the kitchen industry and beyond. Since he started the business over five decades ago there have been several recessions, and he has always ensured the company came out the other side stronger. This resolute mindset is something that has resonated with me and has helped fortify our company. Since I took full control of the company, I have initiated many changes to allow us to grow and adapt to trends and market conditions. The core values instilled by my father still form the very basis of how we do business. When choosing your kitchen, what elements should you pay most attention to and why? There are a number of considerations.

INTERIORS

| 99

Personal style preference is obviously extremely important, as is the functionality of the design and layout. At Wrights Design House we place huge emphasis on both. Each bespoke design is custom crafted to reflect how each client and family live in and use the space. We carry out an early site visit to analyse the space in its entirety and suggest any structural improvements that may be required to enhance the finished kitchen and see the project reach its full potential. In open plan layouts, it’s really important to carefully consider the function and flow of the room as a whole. While planning and designing the kitchen, we will also advise on ways to achieve a natural connection between the defined spaces in the room, such as designing bespoke dressers, drinks cabinets or sideboards to achieve design cohesion between kitchen and dining areas and create a harmonious scheme throughout the space. It’s so important that everything has its place, so do take time to really consider what you need in terms of storage, to ensure your kitchen works for you and your family. From walk-in pantries and hidden utility room access to breakfast stations and integrated computer desks, we can create everything you need to create your perfect space. Do you advise on which styles best suit each interior?

“In open plan layouts, it’s really important to carefully consider the function and flow of the room as a whole. While planning and designing the kitchen, we will also advise on ways to achieve a natural connection between the defined spaces in the room ”

There isn’t a hard and fast rule on whether contemporary or classic style suits your home but yes, we will advise each client on how to achieve the best from each individual space. Rather than labelling designs as modern or timeless, we are finding a real crossover in styles, where classic Shaker style doors look beautiful paired with sections of contemporary handleless cabinetry to create a blend of designs and influences, which is refreshing and extremely versatile. Shaker door designs are very popular in a more pared back interpretation of a classic, taking on an ultra slim version that suits both contemporary and period homes.

lighting systems, these cabinets make quite the showpiece, with pocket or bifolding doors adding to the level of luxe.

What are the most popular design features in your bespoke kitchens? Our signature chef’s pantry is a hugely popular design element that many of our clients request. The 50th Anniversary Collection continues to be very much in demand, with many clients admiring it on display in the showroom and wishing to recreate their own version, translated to suit their unique kitchen footprint. Cocktail cabinets and home bars have become more popular too, so as well as having double larders or walk-in pantries and breakfast stations, dedicated drinks cabinets are enhancing the kitchen as the core entertaining space. Custom designed with reflective mirror cladding, light reflective glass shelving and bespoke

What are the main trends going to be for 2022 and will there be any exciting innovations customers can expect? Painted kitchens in various shades of grey and dark blue have been hugely popular over the past few years and show no signs of going anywhere but more daring colour choices are coming through for next year. Dark greens have been a very popular and much admired choice this year, paired with warm metals. More adventurous mixing of materials are set to come through in 2022, with the kitchen more of design showcase than ever before, especially after a prolonged period of time spent at home throughout the pandemic, where people have been turning to their interiors as their creative outlet.

his beach house in sunny Barbados was a total refurbishment. The house

was dated, with a pitched roof and internally not very beach like! In charge of the whole design inside and out, Celia wanted to create a really simple, textured beach house, contemporary and cool. Her vision was that outdoor living was key here as the days and nights are very warm, so she wanted to create an outdoor living and dining area. The original house was completely opened up and the only areas existing were the exterior side walls. Keeping everything light and using a stone effect tile to create some texture on the front and back of the house.
