South Belfast : People in Profile

Businessman and Northern Ireland’s first football agent Gerry Carlile tells us….

“WHY I LOVE... south BELFAST” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? I became the first football agent in Northern Ireland in 2007. Since then I have spent the past nine years building my sports management company and representing some of the best known names in international football. During that period I have also owned a chain of hospitality outlets in Belfast and Glasgow. In June 2016 I expanded the group and formed a PR firm. We are now doing PR and Public Affairs for some of the most renowned businesses and organisations in Belfast and beyond.

HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK? We have a senior management meeting at 8am three days a week and the other two days I drop my children to school at St. Bride’s. There are also times when I am working away, normally in England or Scotland. My days can vary and there isn’t such a thing as a typical day but normally I spend a lot of time meeting clients or prospective clients. If I’m out of the country I’m normally meeting managers, chief executives and chairmen of football clubs. However as the transfer window opens and deadline day approaches I can find myself in any part of England or

Scotland trying to conclude deals and contracts before time runs out.

HOW DO YOU RELAX IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I read quite a bit and I still play football as often as I can. I also enjoy spending time in Donegal with the family. Whilst quite a lot of my work involves watching football, I still take time out by bringing my children to international games in Belfast and Dublin. Since launching the PR firm in June however, I’ve been busier than normal and spare time has certainly decreased.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LIVING/working IN south BELFAST? I’m originally from west Belfast but I enjoy life in the south of the city. My children are happy playing for St Brigid’s GAA club and Aquinas soccer club, which are both great sporting organisations in south Belfast. My wife Louise and I have made great friends since moving here. We socialise in this part of the city and spend most of our time here. Having three young children we are never stuck for things to do, whether it’s a trip to the Ulster Museum or an hour at Drumglass Park

Hidden gem: Gerry loves the coffee and vibe at White Field in Finaghy.

or even a walk along the Lagan Towpath, there’s always something to keep them busy.

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO GET OUT & ABOUT IN south BELFAST? I like the Devenish at Finaghy and The Albany on the Lisburn Road. Both places are vibrant and contemporary and have both benefited from major refurbs in recent years. The Devenish is the top spot for watching soccer and GAA and The Albany is the best in the city for the rugby. The Hatfield on the Ormeau Road is another that has had a major refurb and extension in recent times and is certainly up there with the best of them.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IN south BELFAST? WHY? I’m a big fan of White Field Coffee in Finaghy. It only opened a year ago but it has been a massive success and I think that’s down to the

coffee and the staff. If I get a spare ten minutes during the day I try to get in for a flat white with vanilla... highly recommended.

WHAT IS YOUR F A V O U R I T E RESTAURANT/CAFE IN south BELFAST? WHY? There are so many superb restaurants, cafés and coffee shops that it’s difficult to name one. Arizona on the Lisburn Road is a good spot for a light lunch or coffee. My The Albany is Gerry’s favourite spot for watching rugby. wife’s favourite place is Tony and Jen’s. Tommy Boyd’s Yum Restaurant is another lovely place. Ashley French has done a great job with new French Village. Michael Deane’s restaurants are faultless. The Barking Dog has been a major success. Miel et Moi is a big hit but if I had to pick just one, I think Shu would come out on top. It has consistently been a performer for many years. Alan, Julian and Brian deserve major credit for the job they have done and continue to do.

The Only Guaranteed Way To Bring Your Tiles Back To Their Original State Even the most beautiful homes can be marred by the appearance of tiles suffering from stains built up on the porous tile surfaces. In the past, options for effectively cleaning tiles were pretty disappointing. You could spend hours scrubbing your tiles and grout on your hands and knees. Or, you could rip out the tiles and replace them with new ones at a high cost to both your pocket and your life. Thankfully, a breakthrough in hard floor surface cleaning technology now makes it possible to achieve truly sparkling tile floors without back-breaking effort. C & M Cleaning Services use a revolutionary clean and capture system to restore tiles to their original shine and beauty. With one pass, stained and tired tiles are transformed into a floor that sparkles with its original vibrant colours. The specialized equipment penetrates deep into porous surfaces by pummeling stains with a steady stream of highly pressurized water, which kept at a constant temperature of 250C. Mark from C & M Cleaning Services said: “People are amazed at the difference that can be achieved in such a short time, I have had clients say, ‘You mean the grout is actually cream?’ After the cleaning process has been completed. They almost don’t believe it.” Joyce Thompson from Belfast uses C & M Cleaning Services every year to clean her kitchen tiles. She said: “The comments from my neighbours and friends when C & M finish cleaning is fantastic. I would recommend C & M to anyone who is looking for anything that needs cleaned. You wouldn’t even know they are there, but you’ll certainly know they have been.” To truly appreciate how this amazing clean and capture system renews tile and grout lines you need to see it in action. Quite simply, the difference is night and day. Call C & M today to arrange a FREE no obligation demonstration.

Please call to arrange a free demonstrations (free demonstration only available within 10 mile radius of Belfast)

South Belfast : HISTORY

South Belfast Through Time Belfast Through Time’ by Aidan Campbell was published in May 2016 at Hillmount Garden Centre, Gilnahirk and is available from all good booksellers. It follows on from the publication of 11 local histories covering areas of east Belfast and one on south Belfast. On this occasion the theme is Greater Belfast. The book takes the form of a number of views of many of the areas of Belfast from years ago, especially from old postcards and these scenes are compared with modern photographs taken from, where possible, the same location. Aidan takes another look at south Belfast to how it has changed over the years.

methodist college There were originally plans to build a Church of Ireland cathedral on this site at 1 Malone Road not far from Queen’s College back in 1868. In the event a Wesleyan Methodist Collegiate school was established instead (below) with a view to the dual purpose of training candidates for the Methodist ministry as well as a general education. It became known as Methodist College in 1885. The grand school buildings were designed in the English Gothic and other historic styles. The imposing gate posts to Methodist College, those adjoining College Gardens plus the large house to the far right have all gone as have the square-sets and tramlines on the road surface.

Stranmillis Road today.

Gilnahirk, Castlereagh, Cregagh, university road Queen’s University is just out of sight to the right in this 1950s view (below) containing a McCreary tram collecting passengers travelling towards Belfast. The University is the most important custodian of listed buildings in Northern Ireland, after the National Trust, and the University estate contains more than 250 premises.

stranmillis road The name of Stranmillis is taken from the Irish: Sruthan Milis – ‘the sweet stream’. Not far away is the point at which the fresh (or sweet) water from the River Lagan meets the salty tidal flow. By the late Victorian period much of the front of Stranmillis Road (top of page) had taken shape and is remarkably unchanged in 2015 (above). On the lower portion of the road are two monumental University facilities:

The modern building (below left) which has replaced the terraced housing is owned by Ulster Bank. In the distance the modern Queen’s University Students’ Union was built in 1965 on the site of a grand 1850s Jacobethan terrace called ‘Queen’s Elms’. The terrace was surrounded by elm trees which were cut down after an outbreak of Dutch elm disease.

Stormont, Sydenham, Belmont and East Belfast Revisited Volumes 1 & 2. Newtownbreda in south Belfast was published in 2015. Aidan regularly gives illustrated talks to local groups and societies. The books retail at £10.00 each and most are available at Hillmount Garden Centre, Marie Curie Hospice, Hamilton News Cregagh and Pat’s Newsagency Saintfield Road with profits donated to local charity. The David Keir Building was opened in 1959 as part of a post-WW2 expansion programme and described as ‘the greatest addition to the University property in its history’. The Ashby Institute was opened in 1964 and although it has created some open spaces in its grounds has been described as ‘impersonal and disturbing in scale’.

South Belfast : Beauty

GOODBYE RAZOR! Imagine being able to get ready in the morning never having to shave, wax or pluck ever again! You know the routine of the daily aggravation of temporarily removing excessive and unsightly body hair, the hours spent can all add up especially if your hair grows back at a fast rate. If the thought of no longer spending time and money going for painful waxing appointments or giving yourself daily nicks and razor burns from shaving appeals to you, then laser hair removal may just be the answer you’ve been waiting for. Earlier this year Beauty Haven Belfast introduced a brand new state of the art Sirius system by Ellipse. The first of its kind in Ireland it uses selective waveband technology that offers fast, safe and painless hair removal for all skin types to remove unwanted hair from all body sites in minutes and the results that we’ve seen so far have been fantastic. Laser hair removal is one of the most effective ways to permanently remove unsightly and unwanted hairs, leaving you with soft smooth skin and freeing up a great deal of time in your busy life. Laser hair removal offers a virtually painless method of permanent hair reduction in hair density and works best on individuals with dark hair and a pale complexion. The Ellipse has pre-programmed treatment suggestions for different skin types and hair thicknesses allowing an exact match for the client’s individual needs. On average it is recommended to have a minimum of 4-6 sessions leaving intervals of 6 weeks for body hair and 4 weeks for facial hair between treatments. A patch test is required to ensure suitability for treatment and it is advisable to avoid the use of tanning or bleaching products, hair removal creams or have an active tan prior to treatment. The Asyra Pro machine helps to identify various weaknesses and system imbalances. Your test may highlight nutritional deficiencies, digestive imbalances, allergies, food sensitivities and hormonal imbalances. What do the results tell me? Judithmulgrew

Judith Mulgrew is the proprietor of Skin Medi Spa, Surrey Street, Lisburn Road.

MesoVytal the “A - Lister’s” answer to targeting ageing This month Judith Mulgrew talks to us about the revolutionary non-invasive anti-ageing treatment better known as MesoVytal. At present, Judith is the only skin practitioner in Northern Ireland to offer this fantastic treatment and if you like good skincare and innovative treatments then you will be sure to love the MesoVytal Facial.

Later this month former Miss Northern Ireland Tiffany Brien or better known as the ‘Peanut butter girl’, will be visiting our Clinic to have the treatment carried out. Tiffany’s results will be posted to our Facebook page giving you the opportunity to see the effects and results of the treatment first hand.

Made famous by Celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Madonna and Jennifer Lopez, MesoVytal is ultimately known as the “A Listers” choice for targeting ageing. In fact, this hypo allergenic, anti-aging treatment can be completed in around an hour and you will experience a far shorter period of down time than with other facials of its type such as derma-roller or microdermabrasion.

MesoVytal targets:

With Christmas fast approaching, we are all under that little bit of extra pressure to ensure that we are looking our very best for all of those planned party nights out. However, while it may be hard to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle by resisting all of the rich foods and copious amounts of alcohol it is not all doom and gloom because the MesoVytal is guaranteed to leave your skin more plump, hydrated and looking younger. The peel we use prior to a Meso Vytal facial exfoliates the dead skin cells allowing new re growth. The MesoVytal procedure itself causes minor trauma to the skin, which along with the serum used further stimulates new production of collagen to maximise the effect. The non-toxic hexapeptides in the serum work in the same way as anti wrinkle injections; plumping the skin to reduce

* Ageing skin. * Fine lines and wrinkles. * Reduces enlarged pores. * Acne scarring. * Dry, dehydrated skin. the appearance of wrinkles. However, the benefits of the treatment can be seen and felt immediately, unlike anti wrinkle injections, which takes up to 10 days to work fully. MesoVytal Cell Boost Concept Facials are suitable as a single treatment before an important event or, for longer lasting results, a course of six treatments is advised. It is recommended that the first four treatments are carried out over one month and then a maintenance treatment is carried out monthly to retain the results. Areas that can be treated include the face, hands, decolletage and cleavage.

We opened the doors of Belfast Woodfired Pizza Company in July of 2016 at 699 Lisburn Road. I had trained in fine dine restaurants around the UK for 15 years developing my skill set and learning to love food and the restaurant industry. I wanted my own restaurant to be about the food with a completely unpretentious atmosphere. I’ve always loved pizza but wanted to put my own slant on the classic Italian style. We only use the best quality Italian flour, and our oven originated in Italy - but that’s where the Italian influence stops. We take advantage of our countries great larder of ingredients and our combinations are seasonal, pairing classic food marriages with a modern N.I. twist. On our restaurant menu you’ll find toppings such as, Portavogie prawns, parsley, coriander and chilli gremolata, with rocket and fresh lemon, or Guinness braised beef brisket with Young Buck blue cheese, caramelised onions and Burren balsamic. Our pizzas are cooked in 500 degree wood fired ovens which gives them an authentic, lightly smoked, crisp base. Our sourdough starter was made from peat smoked malt barley which gives our pizza a distinctively moorish taste and also a soft easily digestible crust. As well as the restaurant we have a wood fired pizza van which travels around the country catering for farmers markets, weddings, corporate events and private parties. In early December of 2016 we are launching phase 2 of our business plan which sees the opening of Belfast’s first pizza cafe serving gourmet sandwich flat breads, wood fired scones, delicious homemade tray bakes and Baileys top of the range Silvo blend coffee. Please come and try us out and we will hopefully become one of your new favourite eateries.

ArtisAnn Gallery South Belfast couple, Ann and Ken Bartley, have recently opened ArtisAnn, a new contemporary art gallery on Belfast’s Bloomfield Avenue, a welcome addition to an area already bursting with vivacity and talent. It is just round the corner from the recently opened CS Lewis Square. The new gallery, spread over two floors, Gallery owners Ann and Ken features examples of work from some Bartley (photograph by Helen Sloan). of Northern Ireland’s most respected award-winning artists, including: Brian Ballard, John Breakey James MacKeever, Colin McGookin, Noel Murphy, Peter Richards, and Jennifer Trouton, as well as presenting exciting new talent such as Catherine Davison, Ciarán Harper, Trina Hobson, and Charlie Scott. The Exhibition area on the first floor showcases different artists each month. Owner Ann explains the ethos behind the gallery. ‘We love the arts and want to do our bit to promote it. This is why we hosted our ‘Emerging Artist’ show in September, something we hope to make an annual event. It gives recent graduates a chance to display their talents. However, we also want to make sure that established favourites are not forgotten, so in October we had Brian Ballard presenting some of his smaller works, dating from 1984 – 2016. In November, Fiona Lowe Brunell exhibited as part of the C.S. Lewis festival, while December makes room for two different exhibitions: One In Ten, which is a fund-raiser for the mental health charity, NIAMH, followed by our Christmas group show. For 2017 we have an exciting programme lined up, so I would advise people to join our mailing list to be kept informed of what’s next in the art world.’ ArtisAnn was officially opened on the 30th June by Denise Ferran, President of the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts (RUA). As well as

catering for both homes and businesses, with a wide variety of artwork from painting to photography, ceramics to bronzes, it offers a free delivery service and, for a small fee, can arrange for your artwork to be hung by professional staff with experience in hanging work in commercial and public galleries. Ann and Ken have been collectors, curators and exhibitors for over twenty years so are well placed to offer friendly, knowledgeable advice - should it be needed! Ken would like to invite people to pop in anytime for a browse. ‘There’s no hard sell in our gallery – the artwork sells itself! And we pride ourselves on our friendly, professional service.’ That’s ArtisAnn – another jewel in the crown of Belfast’s art scene. They are also the mind-set for the YMCA as they have grown to become the world’s largest provider of pre-school and after school care for children. At Belfast YMCA we are creating the best environment for families in South Belfast. The nursery is a new purpose built facility for pre-school children to play together and develop their social skills alongside their physical development. The After school club is a fun place where children have the necessary ‘down-time’ between school and home. Monday to Friday they play indoors or outdoors in a 44

South Belfast : People in Profile

Head of School at The Royal Belfast Academical Institution (RBAI), Theo Millar tells us....

“WHY I LOVE... South Belfast” Tell us a bit about your role within the school as head boy and what are you currently studying? In the upper sixth at RBAI, I am studying English, RE, and Latin. In the lower sixth, I also studied Mathematics. English and Latin tie into the course I want to study at university, which is Classics, and I love our RE course as it focuses on philosophy and ethics - two areas which Classics will hopefully allow me to study further. As Head of School I organise events and manage whole school duties for the prefects. I really enjoy the variety of the role, particularly the opportunities to interact with the pupils, deliver speeches and to visit the preparatory department, Inchmarlo I’ve found throughout my time at that it is committed both to developing well-rounded students and to their well-being, promoting academic and extra-curricular engagement. My main extra-curricular interest is Fencing, which I took up when I came to RBAI in Year 8. Since then, I’ve gone on to captain the Northern Ireland team at two UK School Games, winning a bronze and a silver medal. I have also fenced for Queen’s University.

How do you relax outside of school? Outside school I like to keep busy; I’m usually fencing, reading, or going out with my friends. There are some great locations just outside Belfast where we like to go and relax, especially in summer, like the Giant’s Ring, or anywhere along the coast. I think we’re pretty lucky to have spots like that so close to the city. On really lazy days I usually end up watching a lot of cricket.

What do you like most about living in South Belfast? South Belfast is a really vibrant and exciting area, especially around Queen’s Quarter, which is probably my favourite part of Belfast, with all its bookshops and cafés, as well as the youthful, international vibe from all the students.

Where do you like to socialise most in South Belfast and why? My friends and I have always liked the Dublin Road and Botanic for socialising. It’s such an energetic area full of young people and everyone just seems to get along. The nightlife is great, and of course you’ve got the cinema and the cafés as well. I love how Botanic Gardens becomes a sort of hub for young people as soon as we get some good weather.

What/where’s your favourite hidden gem in South Belfast and why? I’ve always thought that No Alibis, the little bookshop on Botanic Avenue, is one of Belfast’s most hidden gems. I’ve always loved reading, and have found independent bookshops like that so much more exciting than chain stores. You can find all kinds of unexpected and diverse books in there, and it’s also a great place to hide out in an engaging and enthralling environment on a wet day.

What is your favourite restaurant/cafe in South Belfast and why? I’ve always thought that south Belfast has some of the best spots for eating. If you’re really starving, you can get ridiculously good meals in favourites like Boojum or Eddie Rockets, but for quality I’d have to say that the new French Village is the best. The restaurant has the feel of a really upmarket spot, but I’ve discovered that even the young and the broke that fill up Belfast’s schools and unis can get a great meal there. ‘Social hub,’ Botanic Gardens.

“Ridiculously good,” Eddie Rockets on the Lisburn Road.

The market, which was named ‘Best Market’ at the annual Observer Food Monthly Awards, will be open from 11am to 6pm from Monday, December 19, to Thursday, December 22. It will then be open from 6am to 3pm on Friday, December 23, and 8am to 2pm on Christmas Eve. The market will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Santa will be at the market from 1pm – 3pm, handing out sweets and sharing his own brand of Christmas cheer.

Smithfield Market , meanwhile, will be open each Sunday from 1pm – 6pm in the run up to Christmas Day.

A True Hidden Gem A Belfast couple have spoken of their delight after their guesthouse was crowned the best ‘hidden gem’ in the UK. The Gregory, located in Eglantine Avenue , walked away with the prize at a top awards ceremony in London. Organised by eviivo, the leading provider of booking management solutions, the annual ceremony celebrates the UK’s best and most unique B&Bs, guesthouses and independent small hotels. Jim and Alison Ferrin and their team fought off fierce competition on their way to glory, after being shortlisted among more than 5,900 entries in the process. The Gregory was deemed by judges as being the among properties located in Northern Ireland, with its performance as well as the uniqueness of the experience offered to guests receiving particular praises. Alison and Jim were presented with their trophy in front of an audience of 200 guests at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London, which hosted the glitzy occasion. Mrs Ferrin said: “This is fantastic, and we’re all so very happy to have been named the best property in Northern Ireland, especially considering the level of our fellow finalists. Ultimately, it’s all about 48

providing our guests with the best possible experience, and the whole team works very hard day in day out to make sure that happens. Yet, there’s no denying that being recognised by your peers is extremely satisfying.” Ian Hardwick, Market Development Director for eviivo, said: “Our Awards are all about celebrating the unsung heroes of the hospitality sector. The Gregory is a truly shining example of how dedication to customer satisfaction and a knack for originality can go a long way. The competition was ferocious in Northern Ireland, but Alison and Jim just had that little extra that makes all the difference. They’re very worthy winners and we sincerely congratulate them and their team.”

South Belfast : REVIEW

Rebel Yell According to the Twitter page of Raw Food Rebellion (RFR), a cafe on the Lisburn Road, the menu contains “vegan, paleo, dairy free, gluten free, wheat free, guilt free and gorgeous food and bevs.” As a meat and dairy lover this is certainly not my idea of food heaven, but I went along open minded and willing to try anything.

The food was great, tasty, filling and full of real flavour but there was an extra treat to come in the form of RFR’s smoothies and shakes, named after a variety of celebrities including; Justin Timberlake ‘Bringing Sexy Back’ , Taylor Swift ‘The Swifty’, Stevie Wonder ‘Master Blaster’ and Buddy Holly ‘Shake Rattle & Roll’.

A visit for a late lunch on a Friday afternoon found the small, bright cafe nearly full. After grabbing one of the few remaining tables we found the friendly and helpful staff eager to answer any questions, and there were lots, that we had about the menu. But, in short everything was vegan and to my delight, despite the name of the cafe, everything was not raw. Another one of my misconceptions had been wiped away.

I decided to go for the Britney ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’, a tasty and fruity blend of bananas, blueberries, spinach and coconut mylk.

south belfast life visits raw food rebellion, lisburn Road

My partner, who can’t look beyond Beyonce, went for ‘Flawless’ named after Jay-Z’s better half. Containing avocado, lime, spinach and watermelon, she seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. I went to Raw Food Rebellion a little sceptical about my first vegan experience, but left feeling a little bit better about myself and vowing to return. RFR is a must for food fans, you definitely do not have to be a dyed in the wool vegan to enjoy it.

The all-day lunch menu, breakfast is also served, had two heated options: a Malaysian sweet potato, chickpea and spinach curry, and a roasted chickpea Caesar salad. My partner opted for the salad while I decided on the Mighty Mexican Sandwich. The kale and lettuce salad came tossed in a garlic dressing with herbed cashew nut cheese and roasted chickpeas. The Mexican sandwich came on two large slices of wheaten bread with layers of guacamole, rainbow slaw, pickled red onions and coriander. This was great on flavour and texture and made me wonder why I was only now experiencing it for the first time.

Katie Waddell, co-owner of Spoon Street, the selfserve frozen yogurt bar on the Lisburn Road tells us...

“WHY I LOVE... SOUTH BELFAST” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? After completing a first class honours degree in Marketing at University of Ulster, my American partner and I decided to bring the first ever self-serve frozen yogurt bar to Northern Ireland. The idea stemmed from a year’s internship where I worked in New Jersey. This is where I discovered just how popular the concept was. Spoon Street has now been open for over two years with our latest store on the Lisburn Road just recently opened!

HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK? There’s no such thing as a typical day, particularly at the moment with getting another location up and running. I am always finding a happy medium between that and the day to day running of all three Spoon Street locations.

how do you relax in your spare time? Running a new business doesn’t allow for a lot of free time. When I get the chance my fiancé Harry and I love to hike around the Mournes. I am also guilty of the occasional Netflix binge! Now that we have set a date for our wedding, I can imagine any free time in the next few months being consumed with the planning, but I don’t mind that!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WORKING IN SOUTH BELFAST?

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SOCIALISE IN SOUTH BELFAST? WHY? Socialise! What’s that? Spoon Street is open 7 days a week with late nights every night and we are very hands-on owners as we like to ensure our high-standards are maintained. When I do get a chance I love to grab a bite to eat in the many, many restaurants on the doorstep. We are spoiled for choice so we find ourselves working our way around them all.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IN SOUTH BELFAST? WHY? Café Conor on the Stranmillis Road without a doubt. This place serves up A+ food and is so versatile with great breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes. The Thai green curry is my go-to dish, and their £6 lunch deals are great value and outstanding quality that is hard to find so cheap anywhere else! If you haven’t been put it on the list!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT/CAFE IN SOUTH BELFAST? WHY? Aside from Café Conor, I would have to say Thai Tanic on the Lisburn Road or Sakura on Botanic Avenue. I love Thai food and sushi so these establishments are both right up my street! I found it hard to come across good sushi in Belfast but once I found Sakura it is my go-to place for a sushi fix!

We were warmly welcomed into the area when we recently opened Spoon Street. The people here are lovely and we recognise a lot of regular customers already! You never run out of places to grab a quick bite here either, we are spoilt for choice!

Katie gets her sushi fix at Sakura.

South Belfast : ROUND UP

Christine Hamill.

When I reviewed B is for Breast Cancer, I was moved by Christine Hamill’s story, as well as impressed by her natural storytelling ability. Christine’s latest release, a fiction novel this time, is just as impressive.

The Best Medicine tells the story of 12 year old Philip, a budding comedian, and his adventures with school bully The Yeti, The (gorgeous) Goddess, the Romantic poets, an annoying Chihuahua and his best friend Ang… and Philip’s hilarious and touching attempts to cope with his mother’s HIGHLY embarrassing diagnosis. Through it all, Philip is writing letters to his hero, the comedian Harry Hill, looking for advice. The Best Medicine, whilst a fictional novel, was inspired by Christine’s own battle with cancer, in particular how she found respite through comedy. Christine’s sense of humour really shines in this novel, as does her ability to craft wonderful characters that engage you from the ouset. I adored Philip Wright! Christine has created a protagonist who is on one hand hilarious and mischievous and on the other is innocent and vulnerable. I also loved how Christine tackled the serious subject

of a young boy dealing with such a grown up issue as his mother being diagnosed with breast cancer. Although he is understandably worried about his mum, who is ‘acting weird’, he is also preoccupied with his own issues, from the school bully to problems with his best friend Ang. Philip’s way to cope with the stresses in his life is to write to his hero, comedian Harry Hill. These exchanges are hilarious and heartbreaking all at once.

THE BEST MEDICINE By Christine Hamill Little Island Books, £6.99

Kellie Burch reviews the latest book by south Belfast native Christine Hamill.

The Best Medicine is a tender and engaging novel, that will also make you laugh out loud. However, not only does the book thoroughly entertain throughout, it will also provide comfort and support for adults and children alike who are experiencing a similar situation. Whilst it can seem like the future in such circumstances is grim, Christine shows that you are not alone and that you can find support in the most unlikely of places. I can not recommend this book highly enough!

Ian Bennington, Managing Director at Part Two Design tells us….

“WHY I LOVE... lisburn road” WHAT school did you attend? Dunmurry High School which closed a few years ago due to population change in its catchment area. I then went to Art College in York Street Belfast to do a degree in Visual Communications.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? Even whilst training at art college I was very commercial, working in local advertising agencies during holiday times and taking on various commissions as a freelancer. In 1982, when I graduated, I took the unusual step of starting a design business called Triplicate, immediately on leaving. So I have never attended a job interview or worked for anyone. I was MD of Triplicate for 31 years until December 2013 when I decided to demerge that business to enable me to do something fresh and create a smaller branding consultancy. So Part Two was born in January 2014 and is coming up to its third birthday. We operate from the stunning and historically significant Meter House in Belfast which is one of the most impressive buildings in the country and an inspirational place to do creative work. Every visitor, no matter

where they are from, comes through the massive door, looks up at the breathtaking dome and says the same thing – “Wow”.

HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK? Living in Marlborough Park means I can get down to the studio in the gasworks in about 15 minutes so I tend to start about 8.45am. Most of my day is taken up with meetings with clients and internal meetings with the designers on projects. As my role involves generating new business I attend a lot of functions and meet up with lots of my connections to network. Let’s just say that my face is familiar to coffee shops on the Lisburn Road! I do a lot of mentoring for Prince’s Trust and Business In the Community and I also do guest lectures in the Art College in Belfast and the Southern Regional College so my days can vary a lot.

Describe the atmosphere of living and working on the Lisburn Road I think the Lisburn Road is a great place. I love the fact that it has everything from a family butchers like Coffeys to a Bang and Olufsen

Everything you need: Ian loves the business diversity of the Lisburn Road.

I am also a big fan of Arcadia Delicatessen which my Creative Director Sebastian Willis and I re-designed a few years ago. I find that my clients from all over the province and my general network are regularly on the Lisburn Road so it’s easy to meet up for a chat. Part Two designs all Mauds branding and marketing materials so being able to pop in to Café Mauds allows me to see our work in action and “test the product”!

What is your favourite restaurant on the Lisburn Road? For fine dining Shu, for a plate of calamari and a beer, The Albany and for their wonderful carbonara, Deane and Decano. One of Ian’s favourite spots on the Lisburn Road is Arcadia Delicatessen.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM on the lisburn road? WHY? I am a big supporter of the independent retailer. The Albany , great for a beer and a plate of calamari.

Annual Open Day at Lowe Memorial It was another fabulous afternoon out for the whole family as Lowe Memorial (Finaghy) hosted its annual community open day for the eleventh year running. Outdoors, the church car park was transformed into a vibrant funfair and the excitement extended to the front lawn where the younger children enjoyed pony and trap rides, courtesy of Phil’s Farm, and had the opportunity to get ‘up close and personal’ with Levi the Llama, Fifi the micro pig and Roger the giant rabbit (to name just a few of the animals) A great time was had by all so be sure not to miss it next year!

Each project is completed with an effortless marriage of design and functionality, using only the finest materials and ensuring that the design will capture the spirit of the client, and the essence of the space.

This workshop gives an overview of the process of design thinking and participants leave with a checklist of how to start by writing a brief and producing a visual interpretation that is the basis for a sample palette that kick starts the project. The Course will cover: Introduction to Interior Design Space Planning / Concepts and style The importance of choosing colour and textures Lighting, Furniture and Accessories Bringing your design to reality / Project Management Places are limited so please book early to secure your place by calling Goretta on 078500 62505 www.studioginteriors.co.uk

The Great Outdoors After a very successful run last year, there was a buzz at Inchmarlo Preparatory Department (RBAI ) at dawn on Wednesday 16th November as 120 boys ran around the fantastic 6 acre grounds. Run in the Dark events are organised globally as part of Mark Pollock’s (a past pupil of Inchmarlo) mission to find a cure for paralysis. Mark’s father started the run and Mark’s sister was supporting, along with teachers, parents and siblings. The smiling faces and muddy clothes were evidence of the fun had by all!
