LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
I
started the Ultimate Gifts Guides Magazine because I am tired of not seeing accurate representation for Black owned businesses. The same 25 brands being circulated between the majors blogs makes it appear as though entrepreneurship is a rarity in our community. False. We as a community and culture have always been industrious and entrepreneurial however, that is not publicized. Not any more. We are dedicating our platform as a place for the black dollar to be utilized in an informed way with high quality brands at the forefront.

International broadcaster Femi Oke has been revealed as the new host of Al Jazeera English’s hit social media show The Stream. The former BBC, Sky and CNN journalist will take over presenting duties from Monday 6th May. Femi has been based in the US since 1999 and spent nine years anchoring and reporting for CNN in Atlanta.
She is a mom of 2, a wife and a sister that decided to go for her dream and design an online business that excites her every single day. By providing the resources and support they require, Odihi aims to ensure that ALL Black girls and women are able to succeed in life - from their studies to their careers, profession, and businesses - so they can unleash their greatness and thrive forward, confidently. Efe is also a scientist and senior analyst at Accenture, an author, inspirational speaker, and a self-driven confidence coach working with young girls and women to help them become confident, self-motivated, fearless, and empowered. Efe is passionate about helping women change the narrative by smashing limiting beliefs (self-doubt, insecurities, fear of failure, and imposter syndrome). An advocate for mental health and self-love for women. She holds a degree in Nursing/Midwifery, in Biomedical Science and Health Science from Oxford. Coupled with a certification in confidence coaching, motivational speaker, birth, and postpartum Doula. Efe is passionate about traveling, photography, reading, music both singing and listening. isha bowe is the epitome of the question what do we look like? When we as black women walk into a room what is it that you actually see of us? Do you see a scientist? Do you see an engineer? Do you see an entrepreneur? Do you see a mother? Do you see a VP of the United states of America? What is actually seen when a black woman walks into the room.

Meet Aish Bowe, who is more than just a former engineer and rocket scientist at NASA and more than founder and business owner. Originally being told she would be better suited in the cosmetology field, Aisha showed up and showed out by graduating with an aerospace engineering degree from the university of michigan and becoming an award winning rocket scientist with NASA.

“Its not about who you think you can be, it about who you know you are not” - Aisha Bowe Some would say being at NASA is the “momma we made it’’ destination, but for Aisha, its just the beginning. Looking back on your upbringing and environment, a lot of the times you are not given all the options of who you can actually become. As a community we are slowly coming out of the “ you can be an entertainer or a baller” mentality, but you have to stop and think, if you are only given two options to become and you do not want either, what do you do? For Aisha, she leaned on what she is not, and that’s a quitter. Even after having trouble all throughout high school and not making the grades. Aisha continued on to showcase and represent what a rocket scientist looks like, inspiring so many other youth behind her. “You can be a scientist and still have a beat face!” Its the representation for me! Aisha Bowe founded her start up STEMboard, which is an engineering solutions company with a mission to help youth break stereotypes, and the internalization of negative narratives that can potentially hinder them from pursuing careers in STEM. “Whether

This is a big take away from Aisha Bowe’s story and accomplishments. The american dream, that you can be whoever you want to be and be as successful as you possibly can. That is exactly what has happened. As a community we have to know and believe that we can achieve whatever we set out for. Even if we don’t know what that looks like 100%. Aisha Bowe left NASA, a prestigious job, position and I am sure, a great dental plan, because she wanted something for her own. She wanted to create a sustainable business that is ranked and respected in the entrepreneurial circle a well as impactful for the future generations. That’s exactly what she did. “There is no shortage of power, so there no shortage of access of opportunity” Although having to face discrimination along the way, something that so many of us can unfortunately relate to, Aisha shared that although she had to eal with it, she realize that her actual job is to motivate and inspire others with potential to join her. As she continues to open pathways and doors for every color to be represented in the field and industry she is using her influence and organization to support and assist STEM camps all over the nation. It’s not your fault. Body weight regulation is more complicated that “calories in” vs “calories” out. Weight regulation is based on “energy intake” vs “energy expenditure.” A wide range of factors-genetic, hormonal, mental, social, and environmental- impact your energy balance and help determine your weight beyond just food and exercise.

Be aware of cultural bias when being screened for obesity. Your target “healthy weight” may be incorrect if your doctor or healthcare clinician didn’t adjust your non-obesity cut off level based on your age, race/ ethnicity, and sex.

Black women, in general, have more lean muscle mass compared to Caucasian women which can lead to an incorrect diagnosis of obesity prematurely in Black women. Therefore, the BMI, Body Mass Index, standard which is used to determine when you classify as having obesity (excess body fat), needs to be adjusted based on race & ethnicity.

Each time you lose weight and regain it makes it harder to lose it the next time.

ess sends a text to her best friend Dawn from inside Elements restaurant and bar: I’m here. Wish me luck.
it. I’m a complete mess right now,” Jess takes the clutch from Terry’s hand. “First date jitters happen all the time. Remember to breathe,” says Terry.
She checks her silk pressed hair with her phone’s camera then slips her phone into the crimson red clutch she always pairs with her little black dress. An unexpected baritone voice startles her,
Jess takes in a huge inhale.
“What are you having?”
“Yes, that’s Paul, thank you so much.”
She looks up to see the bartender in front of her.
“You’re welcome. Enjoy your night.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you,” the bartender apologizes. “It’s ok, I’m a little on edge, tonight. I’m here to meet someone and it’s my first time on a date with someone from a dating app so it’s a lot for me,” explains Jess. “Well, let me make you something to take the edge off. Are you a martini fan?” “I am. I’ll take it with extra olives please.” “You got it. Oh, and in case you were wondering, you look amazing.” “Thank you,” Jess takes a moment to read his name tag, “Terry.” “No problem.” Terry turns around to make her drink and Jess notices his dreads. She daydreams about trying locs as she looks out the floor to ceiling windows that frame the city sky-line. Jess gets lost in her thoughts when her phone buzzes. She pulls the phone out of her clutch and spins into the martini glass Terry placed on the counter while her back was turned. The drink splashes on her phone. Jess panics, reaches for a napkin, and almost places her clutch in the small puddle of alcohol, but Terry places his hand underneath the bag before it contacts the sur-face. “Don’t worry about it,” Terry assures her while tossing the glass aside, wiping the counter with his left hand, and holding the clutch with his right. Jess wipes off her phone. “Here’s your clutch,” says Terry. “Oh my God. I didn’t even realize you had

“The guy looking around at the hostess counter, is that him,” asks Terry as he gestures over her shoulder.
Jess’s eyes linger on Terry’s smile until he walks away to take another guest’s order. She turns around and looks at her date Paul tower over the petite hostess in a tailored navy suit, em-phasizing his muscular frame. “I think I am going to enjoy this,” she thinks as she waves to him. Paul sees her, gives a slight nod, and makes his way to her side. He hugs her and she takes in the woodsy scent of his cologne. His left hand rests on the small of her back, and Jess melts into his firm yet gentle touch. The spell cast by his physique, style, and aroma breaks when Paul snaps his fingers at Terry, “Drinks!” Terry looks over his shoulder in disgust, but remembers he’s on the clock and fixes his face. Jess maintains her look of disgust as Paul turns back to her. “Yeah, I’m finding people don’t want to work hard anymore,” says Paul, assuming Jess’s face was for the bartender. He snaps again and Jess places her hand on his forearm. “You just snapped your fingers at another human.” “He’s our servant tonight, he should be serving us,” states Paul. “You mean server,” says Jess. The two look at each other confused as the waiter comes over and lets them know their table is ready. Jess looks back at Terry to mouth an apology, but his back is turned. She trails Paul to the table and stands next to her chair as Paul sits, adjusts, and places his napkin on his lap. He looks at Jess and points his hand out toward her chair.
“You can sit,” advises Paul Jess takes her seat in disbelief. Paul opens the menu and begins talking as he reads, “Your profile said you’re an engi-neer, so you’re smart. And I like that you’re tall. I want my kids to be tall. Do you workout or are you naturally thin?” “I’m sorry, what,” says Jess, still processing the finger snap. Paul puts the menu down and looks directly into her eyes, “I’ll be honest with you; based on your looks and your background you’re in my top four. Depending on how the date goes you could be in my top two.” Jess’s mouth opens, but her brain has so many curse words rushing to get out first she’s unable to speak. She gets up and walks away. Paul shrugs and whistles for the waiter. Two weeks later, Jess walks back into the restaurant wearing a teal dress and yellow pumps. Terry sees her approach the bar and recognizes her immediately. “Good to see you again.” “If I didn’t like this place so much, I would have never shown my face again,” explains Jess, “Well I’m glad you came back. And I must say you handled the situation well,” says Ter-ry. Terry begins to mix a martini for her while she talks. “I don’t get it. I mean I understand why women go for that sort of guy. I fell for it. He was gorgeous and tall and he smelled amazing, but if he’s out here acting reckless in public, I can’t imagine how he’d treat me in private.” “Exactly,” Terry places the glass in front of her, “here you go miss. With extra olives.” “Wow, you remembered. And I’m Jess by the way.” “It’s good to see you again Jess. So is this another date night?” “Yeah. I decided I’m going to get out more, try to not be so obsessed with
work, and I thought the best way to evaluate the different dates is to meet them at the same place. It’s my engineer brain trying to make everything more efficient.” “Let me guess, you’re an electrical engineer.” “Mechanical actually.” “I studied electrical engineering for three years, but had to drop out because of family is-sues. I started bartending to make money, I fell in love with it and decided, why not keep doing the thing I love.” “It’s sad you had to drop out, but it’s great you get to do what you love.” “Everything happens for a reason. Anyways, who’s the lucky guy tonight?” “Ja’shawn,” says Jess. “I’m sorry, could you say that again,” asks Terry. “Ja’shawn. He was named after his mom’s grandfather Jay and his uncle Shawn.” Terry bites his lip trying not to laugh. “I’m gonna need you to stop judging people’s names. He was super sweet when we chat-ted so I figured why not give it try. What’s the worst that can happen,” explains Jess. “You’ll find out soon enough,” says Terry.
Ja’shawn approaches Jess, leans in, and wraps his arms around her. Her nose is filled with the scent of a Black & Mild. “I knew it was you soon as I walked in. Some of these chicks be lyin’ on their profile pic-tures, but you-” he takes a step back and scans Jess from head to toe. “Ja’shawn I take it,” interjects Terry, “Jess was telling me how excited she was about her date with you tonight. What can I get you to drink?” Ja’shawn holds his oversized, faded black jeans up with his left hand as he extends his right hand to Terry. “You can call me Shawn.” Shawn looks at Terry’s name tag and his eyes linger for a few seconds while the two of them shake hands, “T-er, Terry? Yeah, let me get a Jack and coke.” “It’s so nice to finally meet you Shawn,” says Jess with a forced smile, “I’ve really en-joyed our chats.” “The pleasure is all mine,” he grabs Jess’s hand, kisses it, and leaves a bit of saliva on her knuckle. Jess discreetly rubs her hand against the side of the stool. “This place is dope! You gotta brother expanding his horizons. I ain’t gonna lie I’m feeling a little underdressed.” “No, you’re fine, but I need to run to the restroom real quick, I’ll be back.”
Jess rushes away and pulls her phone out as soon as she’s out of Shawn’s sight. She sends Dawn a text: 911! Call me in five minutes. Oh no! I got you, but I gotta hear about this as soon as you leave. Lol Jess drops her phone back into her purse. She makes her way back to the bar. Shawn is in deep conversation with Terry. “So those plateaus are actually the stumps of ancient trees the Nephilim cut down,” ex-plains Shawn, “How’s lava or rain gonna make a flat top like that?” Shawn downs half the glass as Jess walks up. He puts the glass down and explains to her, “I was telling Terry about the book of Enoch and how that led me to the mountain tree theo-ry.”

“I’m curious, how did we get on the topic of the book of Enoch,” asks Jess. “Terry was asking what I was reading these days,” says Shawn. He continues to ramble on as Jess gives a side eye to Terry. Terry shrugs and walks away. Shawn explains how ancient giants used to harvest giant trees while Jess counts the sec-onds until Dawn’s call. Her phone rings and she scrambles to answer. “Sorry, I have to take this,” she turns away from Shawn and answers the call, “hello?” “Get out of there,” Dawn whispers into the phone. “Oh my god! I’ll be right there,” Jess hangs up, tosses a twenty on the counter, and turns back to Shawn. “I am so sorry. I need to go. There’s an emergency.” “No worries. I’ll hit you up later.” Jess gives Shawn a pat on the back before jogging to the exit. Jess makes it to the street, requests a ride, and calls Dawn. Dawn answers on the first ring, “it was that bad?” “It was that bad,” Jess looks back over her shoulder to make sure Shawn didn’t follow her out, “I was over it when he came in smelling like an ashtray, but when he started talking about mountain trees I was completely done.” “Mountain trees? Like trees on mountains?” “No, like mountains used to be trees.” Dawn laughs as Jess continues to vent, “I’m trying this dating thing, but I don’t have the energy to deal with this mess. My life is fine the way it is.”
Jess’s ride arrives and she gets in, “My ride's here. I’ll text you when I get home.” Jess hangs up, gets in the car, and reflects on Dawn’s words. After staring out the window motionless for two blocks, she jerks forward. “Did you forget something?” the driver asks. “No, I actually figured something out,” says Jess. Jess walks into Elements the next Saturday with coffee brown boots, mustard jeans and a navy blazer over a white blouse. Her faux locs rest on her shoulders. She walks to the bar and sits. Terry finishes serving another customer, looks up, and his eyes widen when he sees her. Jess takes in his dark chocolate skin, bright white smile, and his midnight black dreads and con-firms her idea that Dawn was right: what she was looking for was right in front of her. “Good to see you again Jess. Another date night?” “Sort of. I’m actually setting a guy up on a date, but he doesn’t know he’s being set up. He’s actually at work, but I really want to be around him and talk whenever he has time and see if he’d be willing to go on a real date someday.” Terry’s smile broadens, then switches to a serious stare, “What if this guy isn’t into dating a gorgeous, smart woman with questionable judgement in men?” Jess does a poor job of covering up a grin and responds, “Then he’s an idiot who can get me a martini.” “Lucky for you there aren’t any idiots around here,” says Terry as he mixes her drink. Jess smiles.

We have been conditioned from an early childhood to have a definition of what beauty actually is. What beauty looks like, what it sounds like, how it walks, how it should talk, and how the hair should look. Beauty has continuously been defined to us from a perspective that is not us. growing up without the accessibility to have customly designed clothes, some of us had to grow up with what was simply in the department store. Which meant that what the department store determined as the average size and the average waist and the average bust left a lot of us out. Having to choose between ill fitting clothes that doesn’t flatter one area of our body or ill fitting clothes that doesn’t accentuate another area of our body. However for a young Shatava Lindsey, conforming to what society says is beautiful means that she herself could not be considered beautiful, gorgeous, stunning or revolutionary and that was not about to happen. Some say that when you only have two choices you have to pick one; however there are some of us of a different breed that will choose to
create our own way. At a young age Shatava began designing her own cloth es. Taking ‘hand me downs’ clothes and even clothes from goodwill and redesigning them into outfits that were fashion forward and represented who she was in her most authentic form. Designing clothes that fit her at the waist, and hips, because lets face it, most clothes cannot keep up with all our curves. Shatava even designed pants to cover all of her torso and not
down to her ankles and not stop at her calf. Because women come in all sizes and heights. Miss Lindsey has been in the fashion industry for years, she has taken it upon herself to Showcase and represent the body types from 0 to 5x in all of her fashion designs. From selling her creations out of her trunk to showcasing her fashion design on the runways during fashion week in New York. Shatava has continued to be a representative not only for women of diverse shapes but for women of color. Shatava’s story is one of inspiration and adoration. Its not about the obstacles or environment she came from but how she has leveraged her
voice, talent and opportunities to create a space of representation. Its more than the fashion industry she is trailblazing, it is the movement. The movement that we all get to witness and support. She is what a young person of color sees and says, “I can too.” Maybe what is not being noticed or recognized is that ‘we’ are being represented on major stages such as New york fashion week. Our beauty, our bodies, our talent is being showcased and we are receiving the credit we deserve. Black women specifically have not received their fair share of credit and respect for their contributions to society. Take for instance, Ann Lowe, who was the first African-American to become a fairly renowned fashion designer. She designed clothes for high society women in the 1920s. She even designed the bridal gown of John F Kennedy’s wife and received zero credit because of her race. So when we see Shatava Lindsey designs gracing the stages and platforms, support her. As she graces the TV screens of various talk shows such as Ready To Love and Sister’s Circle, support her. Her dream is something that has been shared by millions of people, but only a few have reached it and even less have been recognized by it. Shatava Lindsey deserves all the flowers, let’s be sure to give them to her.

id you see the story of the elderly Black woman who was arrested for stealing from a Wal-Mart in Atlanta a couple of years ago? It created a small stir because she was an eighty-six-year-old Black woman. Many wrote

it off as her being older and probably not having money to get the things she needed. There was an outcry of sympathy for the feeble-looking Black woman who just needed a few things to survive. Little did the public know that she was international jewel thief, Doris Payne. Diamond Doris is her story narrated in her distinctly humorous voice. This book follows her humble
beginnings in West Virginia to her jet-setting across Europe and gaining access to the most exclusive jewelry stores. Reading, mouth agape, about how she so effortlessly finessed even the most punctilious jewelers made me feel like I was a part of the con! Her life was lived like a movie (and will soon be one). Hey Doris, if you are reading this, teach me.

rittney Morris wrote the book I didn’t know I wanted to read. I don’t game and I’m not a teenager with Ivy League aspirations, yet here I am enthralled with this read. Kiera Johnson is a high school senior living a double life as a game developer of her own multiplayer online role-playing card game. Now did I know what that was before reading? No. Kiera creates this game as a safe place for Black gamers to play in a universe where their differences are not ostracized or belittled but celebrated with hundreds of battle cards, some titled: Jimi Hendrix, Swerve, Twist Out, and Purple Rain where a haze of purple clouds surrounds the opponent and blocks their view. Morris had me on the edge of my seat with the twist and turns of the battles. A kid is murdered IRL (in real life) because of the game and it turns Kiera’s world upside down. The purpose for the exclusiveness of the game evolves to be the reason people try to take it down. I loved every moment of it! The young adult genre has been booming with hits and this is one.
A PIECE OF CAKE by Cupcake Brown (Memoir)
T
his memoir is one of determination, resilience, and perseverance. Cupcake Brown (her real name) writes from the perspective of each defining moment in her life: the funny eleven-year-old, the teen trying to find herself, and the functional drug addict. Anything damaging that can happen to a person happens to Cupcake. From being a foster care system casualty to gang-banging to selling the drugs she gets hooked on. Her determination to overcome the many obstacles placed in her way makes this book a profile in courage. Think I have given most of the book away? You have no idea what you are in store for. You wonder how you can read this story of a traumatic upbringing and laugh, but Cupcake can weave any event into a comedy set. Her wit makes it an easy read. With all she endured, you have to laugh to keep from crying, and Cupcake will definitely keep you laughing. Buckle up!
THE SECRET LIVES OF CHURCH LADIES by Deeshaw Philyaw (short stories)
I
am in no way a fan of short stories. They always leave me wanting more, so I shy away from anything remotely close to it. Deeshaw got me. She roped me in with the title. Who would not want to know about the secret lives of church ladies? She shattered all of my expectations of these stories because they literally are the lives of women who are the backbone of an organization that sometimes pushes them into the shadows. There is a mélange of stories ranging from a creeping pastor to adult children of side relationships. Philyaw addresses it all and ends every story perfectly. Of course, I have a favorite story, but what’s yours?
BLACK GIRLS MUST DIE EXHAUSTED by Jayne Allen (fiction)
“A
lot of times it does feel exhausting. Because everything bad in society is about you, but when it comes to good, nothing is for you. I feel like I’m not enough and too much, all at the same time. And then, other times, being Black feels exhilarating—because every good thing that happens feels like a victory.” Whew! I believe I stood and did a slow clap when I read this line. Jayne Allen was killing me softly with her words in this book. I loved and hated her all at the same time because how could she look into my life and write my story? How did she so succinctly dissect the single, 30+, Black woman experience? After the first chapter I wondered, what sorcery was this? I was moved to tears. Finally, a book with experiences felt by a myriad of Black women. Tabitha is a thirty-three-year-old Black woman living her best life with a dream job in Los Angeles, sans someone to share it with. And, of course, her clock is ticking. The reader follows her journey to find her special someone and have a baby with him (ASAP), navigating her friendships, and her relationship with her spry grandmother and estranged father. This is a MUST read.

Octavia Butler’s science-fiction blockbuster debuted in 1979, but this graphic novel adaptation is timely. If you have yet to discover the joy of graphic novels, this is absolutely the one to cut your teeth on. Get into it.
