DR. AND MRS. H. H. SAUNDERSON AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING
Dr. Bruno Dyck’s leadership course begins with students creating the syllabus. From the start, they are engaged, as is he, always. In 2020, when COVID-19 made teachers adapt styles and course materials seemingly overnight, he never missed a beat and still flourished with 90% of students rating him as “very good” or “excellent.” As one student wrote: “Honestly the course exceeded all expectations and was my favourite one of my whole degree.”
Dr. Dyck has taught in the Asper School of Business since 1990 and has been a two-time recipient of the Asper School’s Associates Achievement Award for Teaching, as well as UM’s student-chosen Certificate of Teaching Excellence and the Significant Contribution to Excellence in Teaching award.

In the 2019-2020 school year, Dr. Dyck received two international awards: the Expanded Reason Award for Teaching from the Francisco de Vitoria University, which recognized his innovations in bringing sustainability-related issues to the classroom; and the 2019 Book of the Year Award from the International Humanistic Management Association, for the textbook Management: Financial, Social, and Ecological Well-Being, for which he was the lead author.
Dr. Dyck’s passion for engaging students has led him to become a leader in developing research and teaching methods on management education. He has co-authored multiple ground-breaking textbooks which are celebrated globally for providing various approaches to engaging with the material. Recently, he facilitated the development of an innovative, well- regarded video series called Overdue Diligence, designed to be used in the classroom by instructors wanting to incorporate Indigenous content into the course.
In his scholarly research as the Norman Frohlich Professorship in Business Sustainability, Dr. Dyck has contributed to leading journals of business ethics and management education. His research shows that students who learn multiple approaches to management become better critical and ethical thinkers, and place greater value on social and ecological well-being. And that, both in his writing and teaching, is his goal: “to help students understand their values and what sorts of manager they want to become, so that they can have a positive impact on people, organizations and entire communities.”
One student said that Dr. Dyck’s course provided “a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me.” Another said “He truly was the best professor I ever had. He wants the best in all of his students and believes anyone can change the world.”
In addition to co-authoring the textbook used in the management course, Dr. Dyck wrote the course content for several other courses in Asper’s undergraduate and MBA programs and is taking a leadership role in developing its new mandatory course in sustainable business. He has also developed numerous innovative experiential-learning assignments now copied around the globe.
As students have noted, he walks his talk too. He is passionate about his work and creating a more sustainable world and way of thinking, and in 2023 he won the Faculty Sustainability Award from UM’s Office of Sustainability.
The University of Manitoba is proud to recognize Dr. Bruno Dyck with the Dr. and Mrs. H.H. Saunderson Award for Excellence in Teaching.
